MCALISTER FAMILY LAW EXPANDS WITH RECRUITMENT OF TWO NEW LAWYERS Continued growth of Beyond Group’s specialist family law practice

McAlister Family Law, the North West-based, award-winning specialist family law practice, has appointed two new solicitors: Heather Lucy and George Wilson.

The firm, which is part of Beyond Group, has climbed the rankings in both Legal 500 and Chambers and Partners year on year and has offices in the city centre and throughout Cheshire. The two new appointees reflect the continued demand for its expertise.

Heather, who graduated with First Class Honours in Law from the University of Leeds and gained her LPC from BPP Manchester, completed her training contract at Vardags whilst simultaneously studying for her LPC qualification, for which she achieved a Distinction. She has worked on a wide variety of family law cases, including parental alienation, international divorce and child contact as well as a single case involving assets in excess of £8 million. She has already forged a reputation for academic rigour, excellent communication skills and an empathetic approach.

Said Heather: “McAlister Family Law is a firm absolutely committed not only to divorce and related finance work, but also to the welfare of children through its unique specialist children teams. To have the opportunity of being able to work on both is incredible. The firm’s reputation as family law experts is outstanding, and I am delighted to be able to join them as they continue building something unique in the industry.”

George graduated from Northumbria University with a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) MLaw exempting, where he also worked as a legal adviser within the Student Law Office. He joined Vardags in 2017 as a paralegal, before being awarded a training contract only six months’ later. He chose early in his career to focus on Family Law, and has worked in various areas of that specialism, including private law children, and divorce and finances. Outside of work George has fundraised for many years for the Help for Heroes charity and has a genuine interest in working with military and police personnel, the latter because of close family ties to the Metropolitan Police.

“I find family law incredibly rewarding because there is something special about picking someone up from a bad situation and helping them towards a good one,” he said. McAlister Family Law has made had a huge impact on the region and beyond, and this is a very exciting move for me, as the firm continues its rapid growth and increasing dominance of the family law market.”
Amanda McAlister, managing partner of McAlister Family Law, added: “I’m delighted to welcome Heather and George on board. Both are very talented young lawyers and bring skills and experience that complement the already comprehensive offering here at McAlister Family Law. Like everyone within our firm, they are dedicated to delivering the very highest level of service to our clients.

“Our excellent new recruits will, I am sure, make a significant contribution to the team as we continue to grow as a firm and cement our reputation as one the UK’s leading family law firms.”

Beyond Group Head Matt Fleetwood said: “George and Heather are a perfect fit for the Group’s culture and values. McAlister Family Law has been extraordinarily successful since we established the firm three years ago, and it’s great to see it expand further with these new recruits.”

SkyParlour expansion accelerates with multiple strategic hires

Manchester PR agency SkyParlour has made multiple hires, including two senior appointments, as its expansion plans accelerate.

In a strategic hire that bolsters SkyParlour’s senior account team, B2B PR expert Jenna Walker joins SkyParlour as an account director. A trained journalist, Jenna recently held positions at One Brand Magic and Citypress in the North West of England. Based out of SkyParlour’s Manchester office, Jenna’s focus will be on leading the global PR strategy for several of SkyParlour’s international clients across the fintech ecosystem, including a well-known payments brand and an award-winning fraud prevention specialist.

Former editor-in-chief of The Paypers Adriana Screpnic also joins SkyParlour as a senior content strategist. She will be based out of SkyParlour’s recently announced London office. Adriana has had an illustrious international career within fintech marketing and journalism to date. Most notably, she spent nine years at the highly respected global fintech publication The Paypers, growing the publication’s reputation and readership with excellent industry insight and content. Adriana is a true fintech specialist. She has a wide network of industry connections, a detailed understanding of the fintech ecosystem and unrivalled copywriting skills, all of which make her an ideal addition to SkyParlour.

SkyParlour has also taken on two digital communications assistants from Manchester apprenticeship organisation The Juice Academy. Digital communications is an exciting discipline and one that is required for any fully integrated communications programme. Habon Burale and Olivia Johnston will receive on the job training from SkyParlour’s digital communications consultants in tandem with classroom learning at The Juice Academy.

Matthew Pears, director at SkyParlour, says:

“We are a people business and making the right hires is crucial. The SkyParlour team is the beating heart of the business and behind all its successes. Adriana and Jenna are exceptional hires for us. They both bring experience, industry knowledge and a seasoned skillset, which has allowed them to make an immediate positive impact.

“The apprenticeship programme with the Juice Academy in Manchester is something special to be involved with too. It has provided a way for SkyParlour to open the door into the PR industry for Habon and Olivia, who in return bring youth and a passion to learn. This is equally important to SkyParlour’s future. All four of these individually brilliant women have made the team stronger and will help SkyParlour and our clients achieve great things together. But perhaps more importantly they are also great people to work with.

“It’s exciting times at SkyParlour and this is just one piece of the puzzle. 2021 is shaping up to be a fantastic year – watch this space.”

These appointments follow the announcement last month that SkyParlour has created three new business divisions – Started, Scale and Consult – to better support businesses in the evolving fintech market at all stages of development, from start-up, to scale up, and scale out. The agency has also opened a new office space in London, with plans to open an office in New York in January 2021.

Rebecca graduated from the University of Manchester in 2014 and completed her LPC at the College of Law. She joined Davis Blank Furniss as a trainee solicitor in September 2016 and was admitted as a solicitor in September 2018. PACKAGING SPECIALIST SEES BUSIEST MONTH ON RECORD FOLLOWING MAJOR INVESTMENT

Manchester-headquartered packaging specialist DUO has doubled UK-based production in 2020 following a £1.85 million investment, which has produced its largest sales month on record.

The company has invested in new equipment and extended its facilities to produce 58 million more mailing bags this year to date, an increase of 66% compared to 2019, and is growing its manufacturing team with the creation of seven new jobs.

Anthony Brimelow, commercial director at DUO, said: “Our international trading partners have been affected by closures and supply chain delays caused by coronavirus. We moved quickly to address this and were able to accelerate the installation of our new equipment and site expansion, as well as safely adapting our production capabilities and working patterns, to ensure we could satisfy growing demand for e-commerce mailing bags and other products being used in the fight against Covid-19 such as hygienic packaging for face masks.”

DUO has purchased new manufacturing equipment including a conversion machine and a five-layer co-extruder, which has increased polythene film output by around 25%. With IMRG predicting as many as 120 million parcels could be dispatched in the week following Black Friday and Cyber Monday, the new equipment has enabled DUO to more than comfortably meet peak seasonal demand for its packaging solutions. Total sales in November were up 22% against last year, making it the largest total monthly sales in the company’s 32-year history.

“As well as increasing our UK-based production capacity, the new equipment improves our range of technical abilities and allows us to manufacture more films using recycled polythene content. This fits with our wider strategy to reduce carbon emissions, utilise waste polythene and create more sustainable packaging,” Anthony added.

The company, which received The Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Innovation earlier this year, has seen a 10% increase in the volume of recycled content it uses during manufacturing in 2020 and has sold more than 15.5 million of its well-renowned GreenPE mailing bags this year to date. DUO was the first manufacturer in the UK to make these mailing bags from renewable and sustainable sources of sugar cane.

In addition to new equipment and the expansion of its Manchester facility, the £1.85 million investment is being used to refurbish the site’s staff canteen and break rooms, creating a new socially distanced space. The design gives a nod to the 1980s in celebration of when the company was founded in 1988, as well as capturing the family values of the business and cementing its forward-thinking approach to packaging design and manufacture. With the site expansion now complete, the company has already turned its focus to 2021 and has committed a further £1m investment in new equipment to increase production capacity, including the buildout of its sustainable product range that utilises waste polythene, and further develop its international footprint.

Anthony concluded: “Despite the challenges of this year, it has been a real positive to grow our UK-based capabilities. We’re now looking forward to continuing this alongside our international trade partners and as part of our global network.

“Drawing on our presence in countries such as China, Germany, the US and Australia, as well as the UK, strengthens our resilience and underpins our commitment to maximising sustainability. We’re in position to determine the most carbon efficient packaging solutions for our clients, no matter where they are based, and will build on this with future investment and research that reduces carbon and improves resourcefulness.”

Kuits announces significant promotions round

The news comes shortly after the firm, that employers over 200 people, announced the promotions of Sam Jackson to Associate level and Caroline Brennan to Partner earlier in the year.

Kuits’ property team has seen the promotions of Charlotte Barker, Nadia McMahon-Wilson and Kate Kurtz to Associate level, while Emma Nimmo and Claire Heron have been promoted to Senior Associate.

The firm’s corporate department, ranked Band 1 in the Chambers and Partners legal directory for advising SME and owner-managed businesses, has promoted Solicitor Kate Gledhill to Associate level.

Elsewhere, intellectual property Associates Humna Nadim and Yasmin Kalantari have both been promoted to Senior Associate, along with Rebecca Ingram in the licensing department and Phillip Warburton in the litigation team.

Managing Partner Steve Eccleston said: “We are delighted to have made such a large number of promotions during what has been a difficult time for many businesses and the wider economy.

“These promotions demonstrate our commitment to developing our team members and providing opportunities for progression.

“Each team member that has been promoted has remained committed to providing service excellence to our clients throughout the pandemic, as well as providing clients with commercially sound advice. We, as a firm, could not be more proud of them all.”

Edge Hill University announces new major collaboration with AMRC (NW) and Manchester Metropolitan University Manufacturing Connect

A new joint initiative led by Edge Hill University to support the adoption of productivity-boosting digital technologies in SME manufactures, has officially been launched across the north-west.
The Manufacturing Connect (MC) initiative brings together manufacturing, technology and business experts from Edge Hill University, Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (NW), and Manchester Metropolitan University.
The UK’s productivity challenges are well documented, and the recent impacts of the Covid-19 epidemic have only served to exacerbate this issue. Digital technologies have an important role in improving productivity, embedding business resilience, and supporting growth and recovery. In the UK, the rates at which SMEs adopt even well-established and known digital technologies is far behind that of other European and North American countries.
BEIS and Innovate UK have recognised this issue and are supporting regional initiatives like MC to trial and test methods which will seek to overcome the common barriers to this adoption: lack of knowledge, lack of information, productivity literacy, and unclear impacts and benefits.
The initiative is designed to support manufacturing SMEs from all sectors across the North West and the dedicated team are currently looking for interested businesses to take part to overcome their barriers to adoption.
MC seeks to actively support over 100 SMEs up to February 2021, by running cycles of a digital facilitated Adoption Sprint Process.
The initiative will focus on 3 digital technology types for SMEs to adopt: Customer Relationship Management, Production Planning, and Resource Planning.
MC has worked with digital experts to capture their knowledge and practical expertise to share with the SME participants of the project. Experts from commercial technology vendors, business support agencies, and from organisations who have experience in implementing digital technologies in-house have made a significant contribution to the content developed to support the project.
Explaining about MC, Professor Simon Bolton from the Productivity & Innovation Centre at Edge Hill University said: “Adopting a new technology is a major investment for manufacturing SMEs. It is an important part of their decision-making process that they are fully informed and supplied with real accounts of the impact and benefits of the technologies from vendors, other SMEs and those with significant expertise in the digital technology adoption process. The combination of knowledge, advice and experience from a range of industry experts and peers will add real value and depth to SMEs overcoming barriers through to adopting the technology that is right for their business.”

Huckletree launches ‘Entrepreneur in Residence’ programme to support North West fashion and creative startups

0

Creative workspace and accelerator Huckletree is launching a new initiative to help support local fashion entrepreneurs and businesses recover and thrive through work space and mentoring at its co-working space in the iconic Express Building in Ancoats, after one year of opening.

The ‘Entrepreneur in Residence’ programme will see a chosen entrepreneur handed a full year of office space through a Huckletree membership, alongside regular mentoring sessions with in-house experts on marketing, commercial growth and leadership skills, as well as access to Huckletree’s extensive range of digital programming including investor office hours and pitch deck clinics.

Huckletree Ancoats is already home to exciting fashion and retail businesses like Depop and Stand4Socks. The space is also home to related creative businesses including Programmatic marketing specialist Regital, who work with Gymshark and prolific local design and branding team JBH.

Huckletree offers members unrivalled access to a carefully curated ecosystem of innovative entrepreneurs, and its commitment to supporting members throughout the pandemic has seen members JBH (digital SEO agency) triple in size, while Stand4Socks attribute a 300% e-commerce growth in 2020 to having access to Huckletree’s team and facilities throughout lockdown. The space’s General Manager Imani Chimo is also well versed in the fashion world, having run a successful lingerie startup.

Huckletree founders Gaby Hersham and Andrew Lynch decided to set up the Entrepreneur in Residence initiative after witnessing the cutting-edge approach entrepreneurs in the fashion and creative industries have taken when faced with the huge challenges Covid-19 has thrown up.

In 2019, Huckletree invited one entrepreneur to join their Soho London space, which supports challenger brands and investors. Erase All Kittens, a gaming platform to educate kids 8-14 about coding, was awarded a space and after 12 months of their residency have grown their business in size, won awards including European Digital Woman of the Year and have been introduced to investors through the Huckletree network. The business has since seen a 500% increase in traction during lockdown, making five new hires and securing a $100,000 grant from Grant From The Web.

Founders can apply by visiting huckletree.com. The successful candidate will be selected in January by a panel of judges, and they’ll have access to Huckletree and its facilities almost immediately.

Gaby Hersham, Huckletree Co-founder and CEO stated:
‘We realised the pandemic has been an equaliser for business. New businesses were being founded from bedrooms, but those new founders were finding themselves in a foreign world of entrepreneurship without the safety net or the bond of community. We know from the past 6 years of our own business that having a network – a community of minds and being connected to people in a similar field or sector – goes a long way in helping entrepreneurs achieve their goals. We’re passionate about supporting innovative founders in everything they do, which is why we’re inviting one entrepreneur to build their business with us. This goes beyond desks, and will give a game-changing entrepreneur the space, and mentoring they need to match their ideas and talent.

It’s been inspiring to see our members innovate their way through the pandemic and continue to blaze a trail across their industries, but we know that innovation doesn’t happen at home. We remained safely open throughout the pandemic to help foster collaboration and creativity, and will continue to do so in order to protect the startup and scale-up ecosystem that we know is vital for the UK’s economy, especially at such a turbulent time. We’re especially excited about the fashion and creative scene in the North, where fashion brands like Pretty Little Thing, The Manchester Bee Company and creative marketing businesses like Regital and JBH are tackling the pandemic with a combination of inspiring resilience and the creative approach that brought them their initial success.
