Manchester-based Ripe celebrates double win at Insurance Times Awards

0

Manchester-headquartered insurtech business, Ripe Insurance, is celebrating following a double win at the prestigious Insurance Times Awards this week.

The company, which provides a range of specialist insurance products within the sports and leisure sectors, was awarded Personal Lines Broker of the Year for the second year running.

Judged by an independent panel of experts, the Insurance Times Awards aim to shine a light on outstanding achievements within the UK insurance industry.

Ripe was commended for its innovative and tech-driven approach which continues to disrupt the traditional market. Its products, which range from cover for personal trainers, musicians and golfers to caravan and boat owners, allow customers to build a policy in just a few clicks through mobile-enabled e-commerce websites.

The team also picked up Silver in the B2C Marketing Campaign of the Year category for its response to the Covid-19 pandemic. Judges were particularly impressed by the company’s agile thinking, which included swiftly introducing new forms of cover to help customers in their time of need. Plus providing tailored incentives, key worker initiatives and access to money-can’t-buy experiences.

The win comes off the back of further recognition for the business, having taken home Best Specialist Insurance Provider at the Insurance Choice Awards in October 2020. This was a particularly ringing endorsement given that the category was voted for by Ripe’s policyholders.

Ripe also recently posted a rise in revenue for a twelfth consecutive year. For the year ending 31st December 2019, the insurtech specialist reported record revenues of £15.043 million compared to £12.975 million for the prior year. The company has now delivered an average annual revenue growth of over 20% over the past five years.

John Woosey, Founder and Managing Director of Ripe Thinking commented: “We’re thrilled with our double win, to be awarded for the second year in a row is fantastic.

“Our industry-leading technology and insight mean that we deliver top-quality products and excellent customer service. So, to have this recognised by our peers once again is a real achievement, especially after such a challenging year! When we can, we’ll be raising a glass with our dynamic and dedicated team, without whom none of this would be possible.”

Greater Manchester manufacturers, supported by Made Smarter, forecast almost 200 new jobs from £3M technology investment

Greater Manchester manufacturers supported by Made Smarter, the movement helping SMEs join the Industry 4.0 revolution, are forecasting the creation of almost 200 new jobs from £3M of technology investment.

Since it was launched two years ago, the North West technology adoption pilot has engaged with 350 businesses in the city region to help them introduce digital tools and technologies to boost productivity and growth, and navigate the impact of Covid-19.

148 manufacturers have received intensive support including expert, impartial technology advice, digital transformation workshops to help manufacturers take their first steps to transform their business, a leadership programme, and funded digital technology internships.

34 businesses have secured £841,000 matched funding for 44 projects which are worth £3M after private sector investment.

The technology adoption projects are forecast to deliver an additional £32M in gross value added (GVA) for the Greater Manchester economy over the next three years, create 191 new jobs, and upskill 455 existing roles.

Some manufacturers are developing projects using technologies which enable them to integrate systems, capture and analyse data, and even create simulations of their plants and processes. Others are using 3D-printing, automation, and robotics to solve business challenges and meet increased demand.

Over 80% of SMEs working with Made Smarter to adopt cutting-edge technologies have seen a boost in productivity, and more than 25% reduced their carbon emissions. Businesses will also benefit from increased revenue, profits and exports, and lower energy bills.

Among the latest wave of manufacturers to secure funding for technology projects are: Forest Sofa (Salford); Garton Ltd (Wigan); Norlin Compounding Services (Bolton); Northwest Crankshaft & Machine Ltd (Wigan); Pilot Group Infrastructure (Manchester); Crystal Doors (Rochdale); Rotite Technologies (Stretford); and Visual Architects (Hyde).

Ryan Mohieddin, Managing Director of Forest Sofa, a furniture manufacturer based in Salford, said: “With the support and advice of Made Smarter we have been able to invest in a data and systems integration project which will enable us to digitally track our production through the manufacturing process. The increased visibility will enable Forest to better manage resource demands and reduce the likelihood of bottlenecking.

“Significantly the new system will also enable us to provide real time updates to our customers, something that I believe will be a first for our sector. We recognise that customer experience is key to a successful business, and the personalisation and automation of real time updates will enhance our customers journey.“

Ben Horn, Digital Transformation Programme Manager at Crystal Doors, a manufacturer of bespoke vinyl wrapped furniture components based in Rochdale, said: “Made Smarter has been supporting us in launching our Industry 4.0 Manufacturing Platform project. From the first meeting, their insight and advice have been invaluable in refining the project to become as focused and impactful as it is today.

“Very soon, we will be taking the project live, transforming our customer experience and taking our manufacturing data management to the next level. The insights on our operations which we expect to get as a result of the project will allow us to make huge strides in efficiency and in improving the quality of our service.”

Connor Whyley, Design Manager at Rotite Technologies, a designer of bespoke fastening solutions based in Stretford, said: “With the support of Made Smarter we are using additive manufacturing to revolutionise the way we work by offering a product range looking to make life easier through simple and intuitive connections. AM is ideal as it allows us to continually develop our range as we grow, whilst offering bespoke features like mass customisation.

“Made Smarter has been paramount to us being able to adopt AM and we are excited about what further opportunities this affords us.”

Lefteris Angelidis, Managing Director at Visual Architects, a designer and manufacturer of event interiors based in Hyde, said: “Made Smarter has been rocket fuel for our company. With the programme’s support we have not only analysed where we are now but looked well into the future and mapped out a real solid direction.

“The support of the staff has been incredible from advancing us to presenting us with a lot of really helpful information. Besides the support Made Smarter has enabled us to invest into robotics, new machinery and a digital technology intern to assist us in advancing our company to the next level.
“Made smarter has been one of the most valuable assets a company could ask for.”

Peter Durkin, Managing Director of Mini Gears, a manufacturer of supplier of machined parts, gears and gear racks, based in Stockport, said: “With the support and advice of Made Smarter we have been able to invest in a data and systems integration project which will help us achieve our aim of a paperless factory and drive growth and productivity.”

Meanwhile, several manufacturers who have experienced the benefits of Made Smarter support, are
taking the next step in their digitalisation journey including: Astropol (Wigan); Fabricon Design (Ashton-under-Lyne); Manchester Manufacturing Group (Denton); and The Bury Black Pudding Co (Bury).

Chris Wright, Managing Director of Astropol, a colour masterbatch and additive specialist based in Wigan, said: “With the support and advice of Made Smarter we have been able to invest in data and systems integration projects which will connect our entire business, helping us achieve complete digitalisation.
“This will transform our business, giving us complete visualisation, transparency and access to real time data, which we can use to improve productivity, find efficiencies, achieve manufacturing excellence, and drive sales in home and export markets.”

Richard Morris, Production Director for the Bury Black Pudding Co. said: “Our ambition is to create the world’s first smart black pudding factory. We have identified a pathway to achieving that ambition which starts with data and systems integration, then analytics, and automation. Working with the team at Made Smarter has accelerated our plan by years.”

Across the North West, the technology adoption pilot has engaged with 1,131 businesses, giving 540 intensive support, and supporting 126 businesses with £3.2M matched funding for 155 projects. This investment is forecast to deliver an additional £118M in gross value added (GVA) for the region’s economy over the next three years, create over 750 new jobs and upskill almost 1,600 existing roles.

Juergen Maier CBE, Chair of Made Smarter, said: “I am delighted to see the positive impact that Made Smarter’s adoption pilot is having on individuals, businesses, the environment, and the UK economy.

“In the tumultuous times we face, it can be tempting to simply cut costs rather than invest. Yet, in the long term, this approach runs the risk of businesses getting left behind. For the UK manufacturing sector to thrive and become a world leader, we need to find ways to encourage innovation and the adoption of digital technologies.”

As well as technology, Made Smarter has supported manufacturers to develop digital strategies and new skills.

Made Smarter’s digital transformation workshops are a rapid and bespoke process designed to accelerate manufacturing growth by identifying digital tools and technologies that can maximise operational processes and enhance business growth.

The region’s business leaders are now equipped with the vision and the skills to pursue smarter manufacturing through the Made Smarter Leadership programme, in partnership with Lancaster University and now also delivered by the University of Liverpool and Manchester Metropolitan University.

Manufacturers have also benefited from Made Smarter’s digital technology internships which offer students and graduates paid placements to work on live technology projects. Some have even secured jobs following their placement.

Donna Edwards, North West Pilot Programme Director at Made Smarter, said: “Over the last two years the pilot has proven the value technology can bring to the manufacturing sector.

“We have helped hundreds of North West makers start their digital journey by providing them with specialist advice to help them select the right approach, level of investment and tools for their business.

“We have seen huge success with Made Smarter-supported businesses reporting growth, productivity and efficiency gains, job creation and high-value jobs. We’re also playing a crucial role in helping the UK reach its ambitious aim of net-zero greenhouse gases by 2050.

“Reaching 155 funded projects which will support 126 businesses to create over 750 new jobs and upskill almost 1,600 existing roles is a tremendous achievement.

“We are determined to continue reaching out to the region’s SME manufacturers to connect them to the tools that will make an everyday difference to their businesses. I would encourage manufacturers to contact Made Smarter to ensure they don’t miss out.”

Leading traditional and digital signage manufacturer Widd Signs has completed a five-figure project to manufacture and install external and internal signage at the striking Crown Street Victoria Residence next to Deansgate Square in Manchester.

The two-month project, which began at the start of September, has seen Widd Signs manufacture and install high-spec internal and external branding and wayfinding signage at the luxury residential scheme, which comprises of two towers which are 21 and 52 storeys high respectively. The signage, which ranges in size and style, includes fingerpost wayfinding signage and totem style identity branding at the entrances to both towers.

The company, which has bases in both St Helens and Leeds, was commissioned by Renaker, the Manchester-based developer behind the scheme, alongside wayfinding consultants f.r.a., who developed the initial high-end signage designs and wayfinding.

The Crown Street Scheme is expected to be complete in 2022 and will consist of 664 luxury apartments and superb facilities, including a swimming pool on the 44th floor (one of the highest in Europe), communal gardens and a 24/7 hotel style concierge.

Commenting on the project, Peter Harris, national sales manager at Widd Signs, said:

Transformation to create a space that will support the ambitions of businesses at Trafford House and enhance productivity and wellbeing for their employees

0

Bruntwood Works, a leading workspace and leisure provider, has kickstarted the next phase of its transformation of Trafford House, Greater Manchester, as it aims to enhance productivity and improve wellbeing for the businesses and their employees based there.

The project will transform the entrance and ground floor of the building, and Bruntwood Works will break away from the traditional office reception by introducing a host point that encourages collaboration and improves customer experience. Further stand-out features will include the installation of bespoke joinery and pendant lighting in the entrance, alongside external landscaping and solar lighting, to really enhance the arrival experience.

It follows increased demand from businesses for local offices, alongside their city centre workspaces, with more companies seeking a hub and spoke solution that incorporates a city centre HQ and a geographically distributed network of offices in the surrounding suburbs.

The plans at Trafford House will bring nature into the heart of the space through biophilic design. The use of biophilia in the workplace is known to bring a host of wellbeing benefits including increased productivity, better air quality and reduced stress. It will help to create a striking new reception area and external canopy, supporting Bruntwood Works’ mission to create workspaces that meet the needs of its customers and their employees both now and in the future.

Andrew Cooke, strategic director of Bruntwood Works, said: “You have a few seconds to capture someone’s attention and we want to make sure that Trafford House not only offers an environment that supports collaboration, improves productivity and enhances the wellbeing of our customers, but is one they are proud to call home. We want to create a first-class experience for anyone visiting or working at Trafford House.

“In today’s world, the wellbeing of our people and customers is more important than ever and it’s proven that employee wellbeing has a positive impact on productivity. This transformation will create a productive space that really puts people first, and in the process gives our customers an office that truly reflects their own ambitions and helps with talent attraction and retention. We’re committed to investing in our buildings across the region so we can continue to support those who want to work a little closer to home, and in Trafford House we’re bringing city centre quality to the suburbs. I can’t wait to see the end result for such a landmark building in Greater Manchester.”

The project follows the refurbishment of the building’s lounge and communal areas, which gave Trafford House customers access to a state-of-the-art gym studio with virtual classes from the world-renowned Les Mills, cycle storage, shower and changing facilities when it completed last year. It is also set to become the focus of a pilot sustainability project in 2021 as Bruntwood group works towards its net zero carbon commitment.

The landmark building – which is instantly recognisable due to the vibrant, 38 meter high mural on the facade of the building – is in a prominent location between Manchester United Football Club and Old Trafford Cricket Club on Chester Road in Old Trafford. It provides businesses with high-quality, flexible workspaces that are within easy reach of Manchester city centre and the surrounding suburbs by car and public transport.

It is already home to a broad range of companies, from property, engineering and professional services firms to housing associations, public sector and recruitment businesses, that are attracted to the quality and flexibility of the workspaces available. This includes serviced offices for one to 24 people as well as larger leased spaces. All leased workspaces are available as Made & Managed, which allows customers to build a bespoke package of services including utilities, furniture and cleaning for a simple monthly fee.

The news is the latest investment in the area and follows the announcement that Bruntwood Works and Trafford Council are set to transform the former Kellogg’s site in Old Trafford, Stretford, into a vibrant new neighbourhood – Lumina Village – as part of their joint venture, which also includes the development of the Stamford Quarter in Altrincham as well as Stretford Mall.

CONSENT GIVEN TO TRANSFORM FORMER JOB CENTRE INTO NEW MANCHESTER RESIDENTIAL SCHEME

0

Manchester City Council has granted planning permission to one of the UK’s leading build-to-rent developers, to transform a former job centre into 53 new homes in Longsight, Manchester.

The £8m scheme, spearheaded by Manchester-based Placefirst, will boast a rooftop extension to the former 32,000 square foot job centre situated on Clarence Road, which has been closed since August 2018. It has been designed by Altrincham-based Project 3 Architects who have worked on a number of schemes around Greater Manchester.

Work on the development will begin in 2021, transforming the offices into a variety of one, two and three bedroomed apartments. These include dual-aspect ground floor level access apartments, to provide enhanced accessibility. The rooftop extension will accommodate eight stylish apartments with views across the city.

The proposed development offers great commuter links to Manchester city centre. Situated in close proximity to the main university campus, it is also just a 15-minute walk to Manchester Royal Infirmary, making it an ideal residential location for key healthcare workers.

All apartments will be available for long-term let on completion of the scheme, as part of Placefirst’s commitment to offering a viable alternative to outright home ownership. The developer designs, builds, maintains and rents the apartments.

David Mawson, chief executive for Placefirst commented: “Being a Manchester-based developer, the regeneration of this site in Longsight is very important to us. Being able to transform this former job centre into a thriving residential community will be hugely satisfying and will no doubt have a positive knock-on effect to the local area. Discussions during the planning process with Manchester City Council helped the scheme evolve and we would like to thank them for their positive contribution to this development.”

Craig Smith, architect director for Project 3 Architects, added: “We are pleased to be working alongside Placefirst to reinvigorate an existing building which has stood vacant for some time. The adaptive re-use of the building provides a sustainable approach to development, with a sensitive rooftop extension to complement the existing residential surroundings.”
