What does it take to be a customer service hero?

0

Stagecoach Manchester is marking this year’s National Customer Service Week campaign by asking passengers to tell them what it takes to be their customer service hero.

Under the theme of ‘Putting Passengers First’, Stagecoach Manchester customers will be asked to tweet using the @StagecoachGM handle and the hashtag #MyCSHero, with all respondents being entered into a prize draw to win 28 days free travel in return for their feedback.

National Customer Service Week (2-6 October) is run by the Institute of Customer Service and aims to raise awareness of customer service and the vital role it plays in successful business practice and the growth of the UK economy.

This year, for the fourth consecutive year, Stagecoach was rated as the best value major bus operator in Britain in the National Bus Satisfaction Survey by consumer watchdog Transport Focus. The report also revealed that 86% of Stagecoach customers in England were found to be satisfied with their bus services overall.

Elisabeth Tasker, managing director at Stagecoach Manchester, said: “We know how important it is to deliver high quality, safe and reliable service for the many people who use our bus services every day.

“We need to provide good customer service at all times, including when things go wrong, and that’s why we are always looking at how we can deliver even better services for people who travel with us, whether that’s before, during or after the journey.

“This week is a great opportunity to showcase the commitment we have to customer service all year round and to hear from our customers how we can improve even further.”

Stagecoach is delivering even more convenient bus travel for passengers across the country offering a range of payment methods including the recent introduction of Apple Pay and Android Pay through the Stagecoach Bus smartphone app.

The app – which was launched last year and has been downloaded by hundreds of thousands of passengers – enables people to buy and download day and weekly bus tickets straight to their mobile phone. Payments via the app can also be made by PayPal or via debit or credit card.

It also provides customers with journey planning, next-stop information and live bus tracking to make their journeys even smoother. It is available free of charge for Apple and Android devices.

The latest payment methods complement the existing suite of payment options offered by Stagecoach which includes traditional cash payments and StagecoachSmart ticketing.

Stagecoach Manchester is also the only operator in the county to offer its customers the option to pay using contactless technology.

“Thanks to my time at UKFast and my non-executive and education activities, I have acute insights into the issues and challenges facing the tech and digital sector in Manchester and the north-west.

Complacency The Killer Factor In Working At Height, Warns GTR. Manchester Specialist

0

Lack of awareness and complacency are the main causes of serious accidents and fatalities for employees working at height, a Greater Manchester training specialist has warned.

Bolton-based Develop Training Limited (DTL) made the comments after supermarket Iceland was fined £2.5 million for an incident when a contractor fell to his death.

The victim was replacing air conditioning filters in the warehouse of a Rotherham store when he plunged three metres from a platform through a suspended ceiling. Investigators found there were no barriers, restricted working space and several tripping hazards including cabling, and that there had been no risk assessment.

Steve Braund, marketing manager at DTL, said: “This is the latest in an all-too-frequent series of cases where people have been killed or injured because of inadequate precautions.”

DTL has identified lack of awareness and complacency as major contributing factors in many of the cases.

“Common themes crop up time and time again, fragile roofs and skylights in particular, and employers using contractors without effectively checking the contractor will themselves use safe systems of work,” said Mr Braund. “Almost every week there is a report of a death or serious injury of people working at height. Poor assessment of risk, and inadequate control measures, continue to lead to hundreds of shattered lives.”

DTL has produced a handy pocket guide to raise awareness of the factors managers, employees and contractors should consider before commencing working at height.

The UK International Jewish Film Festival 2017 Returns to Manchester, 11-26 November

The UK International Jewish Film Festival 2017 returns to Manchester, 11-26 November, this year the UK International Jewish Film Festival will celebrate its 21st birthday with a special selection of premieres to screen at Cineworld Didsbury and HOME, from 11-26 November.

For over two decades the UKIJFF has blossomed into one of the nation’s most eagerly anticipated dates in the film calendar. This year’s coming-of-age programme will ensure it remains so with its most diverse programme yet, including world, European and UK premieres of the best new Israeli and Jewish cinema on offer to audiences.

Michael Etherton, Chief Executive said: “At the heart of this 21st anniversary Festival is a spirit of openness to fresh ideas, new creative talent, and to telling stories from unexpected places that
challenge stereotypes and preconceptions. It’s this dynamism and openness that has helped UK Jewish Film reach more and more people year on year and over the last 12 months it has been our
pleasure to welcome more than 28,000 attendees to our screenings and events. For this year’s
Festival we are proud to bring to our diverse audiences 75 films from more than 20 countries at 115 screenings across London, Belfast, Leeds, Manchester and Nottingham.”

The UKIJFF is proud to announce this year’s Opening Night Gala will be the eagerly awaited premiere of An Act of Defiance, directed by Jean van de Velde, and held on Saturday 11 November at Cineworld Didsbury. Set in South Africa, 1963, it is based on the true story of ten black and Jewish men who are arrested for conspiring against the Apartheid system. Led by fellow defendant Nelson Mandela, the group plead not guilty, which in turn highlights the corrupt political system in power. This riveting, taut drama captures a pivotal moment in the fight against racism and explores the role of South African Jews in making Apartheid history.

Further premieres will include Ferenc Török’s 1945, a powerful and innovative study of a post-war, village community and is likely to be a contender for the Festival’s Best Film Award. A Quiet Heart, by Eitan Anner, stars Ania Bukstein as a young secular woman who moves to an ultra-Orthodox community, in what becomes a dark, psychological thriller. The new work from cinema veteran Avi Nesher previews with Past Life, a tale of two sisters who delve into the mystery of their father’s former life in Poland during World War II.

Erez Tadmor’s award-winning Home Port is an absorbing social drama that examines the effects of corporate privatisation on the ideologies of family relationships when an absent father attempts to mend the relationship with his adult daughter. Brotherly love and the longing to be reunited with family is a contrasting theme in the heartrending, true story A Bag of Marbles by Christian Duguay, set in occupied France, 1942.

A selection of documentaries will screen followed by Q&As. The Essential Link: The Story of Wilfred Israel, by Yonatan Nir, explores the tale of a forgotten hero who saved thousands of Jews, was integral to the Kindertransport and worked in partnership with British intelligence during WWII. Fiona Murphy presents her fascinating exploration of the rich Jewish life and culture that had flourished in Iraq before the events of the late 20th and early 21st centuries made a colossal and dramatic impact in Remember Baghdad. The Indian conductor Zubin Mehta has developed strong ties with the State of Israel and has become the face of its cultural excellence since joining the Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra in 1969. Bettina Erhardt’s Good Thoughts, Good Words, Good Deeds reflects on his life and career as the maestro looks forward to his 80th birthday.

A savvy selection of crowd-pleasers such as Shlomit Nehama and Emil Ben-Shimon’s The Women’s Balcony – the most commercially successful film to date in Israel – and Shady Srour’s Holy Air fresh from Tribeca, promise to entertain and enliven audiences. This will continue with the Closing Night Gala and the UK Premiere of Francesco Amato’s heart-warming comedy Let Yourself Go!, starring Toni Sevillo. An hilarious case of mutual life-coaching ensues when a distinguished psychiatrist is advised to get a personal trainer and the two discover that both minds and bodies need an overhaul in what promises to be a mood-lifting finale.

London Deputy Mayor celebrates Oldham based supplier that helps keep London journeys on track

0

London’s Deputy Mayor for Transport, Val Shawcross CBE, today officially opened the new factory of Transport for London’s (TfL’s) Oldham-based supplier, John Bradley and Son (Springs) Limited, along with the MP for Oldham West and Royton, Jim McMahon.

TfL has a strong relationship with the 70 year-old family business, which specialises in the production of a range of materials including sheet metal and springs for the rail, aerospace and agriculture industries. By supplying tool cabinets for the Tube, which are used both in depots and for track work, as well as steel parts for rail tracks, they help keep public transport in London working for the millions of people who rely on it every day.

In 2016-2017, TfL spent around £300,000 with the company who employ 110 staff.  Their new factory, which is 110,000 square feet in size, combines their three previous sites into one, enabling them to improve efficiency during production and spend more time developing new products.

More than 60 per cent of TfL’s procurement is with companies outside London and this investment supports around 50,000 jobs outside the Capital. Over the last three years, TfL has spent more than £700m in the North West, including £400m in Manchester. Last year alone, this investment in the region supported thousands of jobs in the North West.

Val Shawcross, Deputy Mayor for Transport, said: “I am delighted to be opening John Bradley and Son (Springs) Limited’s new factory, which continues to supply TfL with the equipment it needs to keep its customers’ journeys on track. This is a great opportunity to celebrate this relationship and see how the London transport network is supporting employment and growth in the North West of England.”

Nigel Bradley, Managing Director of John Bradley and Son (Springs) Limited, said: “We are proud of the work that we do with TfL, which helps Londoners and visitors to the city travel smoothly. The relationship we have with TfL is a great example of how organisations can work together across different regions to benefit both areas.”

MANCHESTER SKYLINE BOOSTS BOLLINGTON BUSINESS

0

The founders of a Bollington-based business have been glued to the television this month – but for all the right reasons. LUNAR Aerial Imaging’s drone footage of Manchester from the air has featured on two primetime television series in the last two weeks with more television and film appearances due in the coming weeks and months.

Viewers were first treated to from LUNAR’s footage of Didsbury from the air during the second episode of much-loved ITV1 comedy drama Cold Feet. This was quickly followed by Lunar’s aerial footage of Manchester by night in the opening and closing credits of four-part BBC documentary, The Detectives: Murder on the Streets, which first aired on Wednesday 20 September and follows Manchester’s murder detectives over the course of one year.

Greg Chivers, creative and operations director at LUNAR Aerial Imaging, said: “The demand for our stock footage has been growing and we’ve recently set up a stock footage library to allow clients to buy existing aerial footage of Manchester, Salford, Leeds and Bristol. The director of Cold Feet contacted us looking for footage of Didsbury and at that stage we didn’t have any so I offered to go out that evening and capture the footage they needed, they were delighted with the result.”Greg Chivers preparing to launch one of LUNARs multi rotor drone scaled

The screen credits don’t stop there with LUNAR having filmed in Nottingham for series three of CBBC’sJamie Johnson Returns and for Manchester horror movie Habit which is set for release later this year. LUNAR also donated their aerial footage of Manchester for use in the promotional trailer for Ariana Grande’s One Love concert in June and regularly captures promotional footage of the city for client Marketing Manchester.

Established in 2015 by Greg and Jinny Chivers, LUNAR operates a range of multi-rotor drones with camera and imaging systems. The company has secured a permission for commercial operation from the Civil Aviation Authority and have since flown their drones at a range of locations throughout the UK and abroad. As well as production companies, LUNAR works with a range of corporate clients in the property and construction sectors producing still and moving images of site progress and also images used for CGI by property development companies.

Greg Chivers added: “We are passionate about capturing compelling imagery using drones and fly our drones over land, over water, night or day, indoors and outdoors. It is fantastic to see our footage appearing on the big and small screen and we are excited about the increasing number of enquiries we are getting from production companies – both for footage from our stock library and for bespoke jobs.”

Equilibrium Asset Management and former headteacher launch book in bid to bolster financial literacy in schools in the north west

0

A headteacher and an award-winning chartered wealth management company have launched a book aimed at boosting financial literacy in primary schools.

Libby’s Big Aeroplane Adventure has been created by David Evans after Equilibrium Asset Management commissioned the project.

The story focuses on central character Libby, who flies from Toronto to Manchester to visit her grandparents, with the family having a financial budget to work to during her stay.

The book – recently introduced to six schools in the north west of England and North Wales – aims to boost children’s numeracy in a fun way and help teachers plan lessons.

David, who recently gave evidence to a Parliamentary Inquiry into the importance of teaching financial skills to young people, was handpicked by Wilmslow and Chester-based Equilibrium to carry out the project.

“We are delighted with Libby’s Big Aeroplane Adventure,” said 63-year-old David.

“And we want to now roll it out to other primary schools in both North Wales and north west England.

“Essentially Libby’s grandparents have a limited budget to spend on their granddaughter while she visits from Canada.

“Her adventure includes budgeting for a day out at a grudge local football match, going to see one of her favourite bands and also figuring out the differences in prices between the 1970s and now for items such as a loaf of bread.”

He added: “It’s a fun workbook that also includes the brilliant and loveable character Frizzle the chicken. Earlier this month we introduced it to teachers at six schools – Bodnant Community School, Prestatyn, Ysgol Cae’r Nant (Brookfield Primary), Connah’s Quay, Ysgol Bryn Deva, Connah’s Quay, Ysgol Tŷ Ffynnon, Shotton, Castle View Primary School and Runcorn Simms Cross Primary, Widnes – and they really engaged with it.”

Debbie Jukes, Partner at Equilibrium, which currently manages over £700 million of assets for over 850 families, said: “Financial literary is vital to primary education.

“We’d been thinking of ways in which we could help educate children in terms of numeracy and financial skills, and bearing in mind our financial planning background, David’s background fitted in nicely.

“The outcomes of working through the book are based on the requirements of the national curriculum – so whilst it helps children with their numeracy in a fun way, it also helps the teachers from a lesson planning point of view.”

She added: “As a teacher and trainer David has an excellent reputation. We are now hoping to take Libby’s Big Aeroplane Adventure into more schools.”
