LLOYDS BANK BRANCH IN MARKET STREET TO HOST CYBER SECURITY SEMINAR FOR LOCAL BUSINESSES

Businesses and community groups in Manchester are being invited to attend a seminar to improve their online security on Thursday 12 October at the Lloyds Bank in Market Street.

The event, which is being run by cyber security experts Cisco, aims to help local businesses and organisations learn how to detect and prevent modern cybersecurity threats. This is one of the first events to be held at the Market Street branch since it re-opened as Lloyds Bank’s first flagship branch in September.

Hazel Burton from Cisco said “Cyberattacks cost companies billions annually, so it’s really important to stay abreast of the latest trends and tricks of these online criminals. Understanding how to detect and prevent modern cybersecurity threats is critical to business success. Also, with new data privacy regulation coming into play in a year’s time, it’s important that business owners make sure they are set up to comply with these new rules, to ensure they don’t face a fine. Through our seminar, we hope to provide all the skills and knowledge required to have real confidence in your company’s cybersecurity.”

As part of the deal the Salford-based technical interior design and build company will host a suite on Level 2 of the AJ Bell stadium where Business Club members can mingle on matchdays.

Five exclusive events – providing Premier Business Club members with an unrivalled opportunity to network with other businesses in the region – will also be held at venues across the region over the
course of the 2017/2018 season.

£2million investment will benefit Stockport businesses

National flexible business space provider, BizSpace, has invested more than £2.5million in a new business centre for Cheadle, bringing an even greater selection of facilities and services for small businesses in the area.

BizSpace already owns Europa Business Park on Bird Hall Lane in the town, and has recently completed the purchase of Cheadle Place on Stockport Road.

The office block will be converted into a 62-office business centre, due to open early next year, with units ranging in size from 86 square feet up to 4,500 square feet.

A £712,000 refurbishment program will transform the open plan space into offices designed specifically for start-ups and small businesses. The interior will be upgraded and a new reception area and break out spaces created.

BizSpace’s commercial director, Emma Long, commented: “We’re delighted to be opening a further centre in the North West, and are looking forward to welcoming a diverse host of the region’s businesses as our new customers. “Our focus is very much about making life easier for small businesses and start-ups, and we’ve done everything we can to make the process of taking on that important first business space as easy and fuss-free as possible.

The modern, three-storey site offers a total of 22,036 square feet of business space and was purchased for £1.9million.

The centre will be launched with an open day in the New Year.

Napthens secures growing retailer Missguided as client

Regional law firm Napthens has signed up expanding fashion retailer Missguided as a client for its retained HR advice service.

Trafford Park, Manchester-based Missguided is an online-based fashion retailer, with an expanding retail estate and thriving wholesale business. Missguided takes its inspiration from social media, street-style and popular culture.

The business has seen revenues increase dramatically in recent years since its founding in 2009 by entrepreneur Nitin Passi.

Missguided has now signed onto Napthens’ HR3 service, which offers clients a fixed-fee Employment and HR advisory service.

As a HR3 client, Missguided will also have access to the HR3 iToolkit, an online resource of practical guides and fact-sheets, handbooks and documents as well as a programme of workshops and in-house training.

Napthens and Missguided will be working closely together to help the business deliver its ‘people strategy’ including ensuring the business values and culture flow are reflected in its policies and procedures.

Remploy supports 8,500 people with their mental health

To mark World Mental Health Awareness Day on 10 October, Remploy announces that it has supported more than 8,500 people struggling with mental ill health, helping them to them find work or to stay in their job. Remploy is a leading provider of specialist employment and skills support for people with disabilities or health conditions.

Gareth Parry, Remploy Chief Executive said: “Mental Health Awareness Day is a good opportunity to talk about mental health in the workplace which should always be at the top of the agenda. Every year, one in four of us will experience a mental health problem and better mental health support in the workplace could save UK businesses up to £8 billion a year.” 

Through its Access to Work Workplace Mental Health Support Service, Remploy provides free and confidential support to anyone with mental health problems which are threatening their job. The Service, is delivered by a team of trained and experienced professionals and has achieved an over 93% success rate of people retaining their employment six months after joining the programme. In addition, Remploy offers a support service for apprentices who find that their mental health is a barrier.

Gareth continued: “We continue to see an increase in the number of people accessing our mental health services, so it is clear that people are becoming more comfortable talking about their challenges. We need to build on this and make sure mental health support is available for all UK businesses and their employees.”

Greg McGahan, aged 44  from Hyde in Manchester, used the Workplace Mental Health Support Service while he was struggling with mental health issues and  trying to balance his work and family-life. With several major changes at work and what felt like an unmanageable workload,  Greg began to show signs of stress and was unsure of his future.

Greg said: “When I first contacted Remploy I had been off work for a month due to stress. I was thinking about leaving my job but, with my marriage already under strain I didn’t want to lose my house and more importantly my family.”

Greg worked with his Remploy Vocational Rehabilitation Coach to identify coping strategies, put reasonable adjustments in place with his employer, and create a tailored work plan.

Greg added: “I have a settled working life again now and a positive outlook. My coach’s support and assistance was priceless. Remploy has enabled me to feel comfortable in my workplace again and I’m forever grateful!”

Brownlee Brothers visit Soreen’s bakery

Olympic triathletes, the Brownlee Brothers, take a tour of Soreen’s Manchester-based bakery to learn more about the secret ingredient that makes malt loaves so squidgy.

The brothers are firm fans of Soreen’s squidgy energy, and the product’s role in fuelling exercise and active adventure by providing healthier, tasty snacks for people on the move.

New centre set to help prevent homelessness

Plans have been announced to transform an empty former residential care home in Manchester into a 38-bed homelessness prevention centre.

Manchester City Council will shortly submit a planning application for the Longford Centre in Chorlton which would provide emergency temporary accommodation to prevent people becoming homeless and help them move forwards in their lives.

The centre, subject to approval, will be one of around 50 different housing and accommodation offers for homeless people in Manchester, with each providing support to different groups of homeless people and meeting different needs.

Subject to planning approval, the centre will be staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week and created to help single people and childless couples who are new to homelessness by providing a safe and welcoming environment in which they can receive intensive support.

Services at the centre are being co-designed by the Council with voluntary sector and public sector organisations who work with homeless people and with people who have experienced homelessness themselves.

The centre will provide accommodation (including food) and support services under one roof plus planned activities to help people who have recently become homeless to rebuild their confidence and move on into independent accommodation, and employment, training or other opportunities.

There are many reasons why people become homeless and this support will be flexible and tailored to the individual. For some it might be mediation with their family to help get them back home. For others it might be help sorting out health or debt problems.

Other organisations will be asked to help at the centre to provide appropriate activities for residents during the day, for example gardening, cooking or art.

The centre will be available for people who are new to homelessness and have low to medium – rather than the highest – support needs. It is intended to supplement the range of existing accommodation and support services and people who need it will be referred to the centre by Council homelessness services and other organisations working with homeless people.

Councillor Bernard Priest, deputy leader of Manchester City Council, said: “This new centre will be just one part of Manchester’s ongoing response to the challenge of homelessness but it is another important ingredient and it’s a key component of the Greater Manchester framework being championed by Mayor Andy Burnham.

“By bringing a range of services together under one roof and giving people a safe and welcoming environment in which to receive support and move forward in their lives, we aim to help prevent people ending up on the streets.

“This is not a substitute for helping rough sleepers and other homeless people, which we and our partner organisations will continue to do, but is intended to provide early help to those on the very edge of homelessness. It’s something we’re keen to have in place for when colder weather sets in which is why we are about to bring forward a planning application.

“There will also be opportunities for local people, many of whom we know are concerned about the issue of homelessness, to volunteer if they would like to do something practical to support and work with homeless people themselves.”

Stephanie Moore of Chorlton-based Reach Out To The Community, which works with homeless people in South Manchester, said: “If somebody is at risk of becoming homeless their problems are only going to get worse unless they can be nipped in the bud. Prevention is an important part of dealing with this difficult issue and stopping people ending up on a downward spiral. We are totally behind this centre.”

A consultation on the proposals has been opened with Chorlton residents. One drop-in session has already taken place and people in the area are also invited to attend another between 6pm and 8pm on Thursday 5 October at The Longford Centre to give their views and find out more about how the centre will be managed. There will be further opportunities for Chorlton residents to input as part of the planning process once the application has been submitted.

Local accountants to make their first Wigan Business Expo appearance

Standish based McGinty Demack is delighted to be attending its first Wigan Business Expo on 6 October. Whilst the Chartered Certified Accountants have nearly 30 years’ experience in the industry, this will be the firm’s first ever appearance at an Expo.

McGinty Demack is a local accountancy practice founded by John McGinty and Geoff Demack in Chorley in around1989. The company then relocated to Wigan, before moving to a modern office suite in Standish in 2013. Vermont House is situated at the Bradley Hall industrial estate, a key business and industrial area in Standish since the late 1970s.

The accountancy experts will be based at stand E087 at the Expo, run by Wigan Council, in order to meet new businesses in the area and extend their already extensive network of business relationships.

ORCHA and business growth hub partner to drive health app innovation in Greater Manchester

The Organisation for the Review of Care and Health Applications (ORCHA), the predominant provider of health and care related app reviews in the UK, has entered into a partnership with Greater Manchester’s Business Growth Hub.

ORCHA’s apps review provides the most comprehensive and robust objective baseline assessment of health and fitness related apps. With over 2,000 full reviews undertaken, and over 172,000 apps filtered and assessed at some level already, ORCHA’s scoring approach enables end users, or health and care professionals and carers, to assess one app over another.

Manchester business support service the Business Growth Hub, part of The Growth Company, have recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with ORCHA in recognition of the rapidly growing importance and value of opportunities in digital health and MedTech emerging in Greater Manchester.

This agreement specifically supports Greater Manchester’s healthcare developer community by providing them with access to a wide range of support which will make their app the best it can be, including:

  • How to develop new routes to the health and wellbeing market
  • How to break into niche health and care sectors
  • Impartial feedback on their product

For a small fee of Greater Manchester developers can now have their app reviewed against ORCHA’s 118-point review model, receiving a report outlining areas of strength and potential development for their app, within just one week. After refinements based on ORCHA’s feedback, the app then goes onto all of ORCHA’s portals which are accessible to both the public and health and care professionals alike.

Developers will also be provided with free ‘top tips’ for creating products for the health and care sector. The advice centres on key elements of trust, functionality, data privacy, testing, content and user testing – all focused on the demands of the health and care sector.

Ian MacArthur, Head of Sectors at Business Growth Hub, said: “Greater Manchester has a great community of app developers already working in the health sector, and a great deal more with the potential to enter this market. Working with ORCHA we will open up new markets and ensure the apps are fit for purpose and commercially successful.”

Liz Ashall-Payne, ORCHA’s CEO, said: “We want to support app developers in Manchester by offering a new route to market and showcasing the very best health apps. App developers we work with benefit from impartial feedback and comparison with others in the market to improve their product. A webinar series is also being planned, designed to enhance developers understanding of the market. The series will cover the key challenges and opportunities of the sector including the role of apps in achieving outcomes, privacy issues and the role, plans and policies of national bodies regarding the use of apps in healthcare settings.

The MoU with ORCHA is the latest example of how Business Growth Hub helps Greater Manchester SMEs and scale-ups working in digital health and MedTech to commercialise their technology. In partnership with TRUSTECH, the NHS innovation experts, the Hub supports tech and digital firms looking to develop and sell their product or service into the NHS. Life sciences SMEs can also register their interest for a new fully-funded STEP INto Healthcare training programme starting in winter 2017 and provided by the Hub, Greater Manchester Academic Health Science Network (GM AHSN) and TRUSTECH.

The STEP INto Healthcare programme comprises a series of workshops and one-to-one coaching sessions focusing on developing products and services for the healthcare sector.

Business Growth Hub projects are part-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) as part of the GM Business Growth Hub project designed to help ambitious SME businesses achieve growth and increase employment in Greater Manchester.

 

Salford’s MediaCityUK office recognised at UK’s top worklpace awards

MediaCityUK’s Tomorrow Building was last night named among the best workplaces in the country at the British Council for Offices (BCO) annual National Awards, recognised as highly commended in the Commercial Workplace award.

The BCO’s respected National Awards programme recognises top quality office design and functionality and sets the standard for excellence across the office sector in the UK. Over 1,380 of the country’s top designers, developers, architects and occupiers, who won their category in the 2017 Regional Awards programme, attended last night’s National Awards dinner, hoping to take home the National Award for their category.

The Tomorrow Building, BCO judges commented, is a new, exciting and imaginatively designed workplace made up of 50,000 sq ft of commercial office space and a hotel. Judges were impressed by the building, which holds a BREEAM Excellent rating, for its design which specifically targets media organisations and start-up businesses looking for an alternative workplace environment in the heart of MediaCityUK.

Judges have praised how advanced and innovative IT has been incorporated into Tomorrow Building’s design and how vibrant and flexible workspaces have been created. The naturally ventilated building has a ‘pay as you stay’ co working space on the ground floor and mezzanine level, which judges stated provides a vibrant arrival experience which then leads on to the light open and airy office floors.

Andrew Woodhouse, BCO Judging Chairman for the North of England, North Wales & Northern Ireland, commented: “MediaCityUk is a hub of digital creativity, learning and leisure where the community work, live and play. Central to this development, Peel Media’s Tomorrow Building is a fantastic example of how the team have used the design of the building to challenge how flexible workplace solutions can be delivered to suit a wide and varied customer base. In doing so, they produced a creative, collaborative and innovative workspace which provides a fresh and fun experience for the building’s users.”
