Belgium-Sweden won’t be replayed

0

Belgium’s Euro 2024 qualifier against Sweden will not be restarted or replayed following the terror attack in Brussels that left two visiting supporters dead.

Two Swedes were shot and killed on Boulevard d’Ypres, with a third seriously injured, shortly before the game on Monday night by a 45-year-old of Tunisian descent. He was later shot dead by police.

The match went ahead but, as news of the incidents filtered through, was suspended at half-time with the score level at 1-1 and subsequently abandoned with both teams indicating they did not wish to play the second half.

UEFA said today that scoreline “is confirmed as final”.

In a statement on their website, European football’s governing body explained how it came to its decision.

“The Executive Committee took note that it had proved impossible to play the remaining part of the match on the following day; both the Royal Belgian Football Association and the Swedish Football Association, given the circumstances, explicitly expressed their desire not to play the remaining match time and to consider the result at the half-time interval (1-1) as final.

“The result of this match does not impact the qualification of Group F since Belgium is already mathematically qualified to the UEFA EURO 2024 final tournament (together with Austria) and Sweden is mathematically eliminated; the respective fixtures do not allow any date to be used in the upcoming November international window, when the preliminary group stage of the competition must be concluded, to be followed by the play-off draw and final tournament draw.”

PC Anthony Devall said: “She cannot walk very far due to medical and age-related reasons and relies on her mobility scooter to make short trips to local shops or to catch a bus.

“The incident has left he feeling isolated as the scooter is her lifeline and is damaged beyond repair.”

Two youths were seen moving the scooter to the bus station, where it was left damaged.

The victim said: “This incident has left me stuck inside the house as I rely heavily on the scooter to get about – without it I am stranded as I can’t walk very far due to health issues and my age.

“The incident has made me feel sad; I am not one for sitting in and I don’t watch much television, so there’s nothing much for me to do at home.

“I imagine that whoever did this did it because they have nothing better to do. It saddens me to think anyone would do this, I just do not understand it, I have lost my independence.”

Anyone with information about this incident should contact police via 17318@gmp.police.uk quoting log 10-12102023. Information can also be reported online or by using the LiveChat function at www.gmp.police.uk.

£1 million cannabis farm seized in Oldham

0

Oldham police have uncovered a cannabis farm believed to be worth more than £1 million.

On Wednesday, a warrant was conducted at an address on Collett Street, in Derker, where the discovery of hundreds of cannabis plants was made.

The latest seizure brings the total street value of cannabis farms seized by the Oldham team in the past four weeks to more than £4 million.

Two men aged in their 30s were arrested on suspicion of cultivation of cannabis.

Second warrant

The team conducted a second warrant on Thursday 19 October at an address on Quail Street in Oldham.

A man was detained inside the house on suspicion of the cultivation of cannabis. The approximate value of the seizure was £100,000.

Chief superintendent Phil Hutchinson from GMP’s Oldham district, said: “Our work in the past month alone is testament to how well our officers are doing at rooting out this issue.

“This is not a victimless crime – there is a web of organised criminality behind these recent seizures.

“Thanks to the community we were able to conduct this warrant, which led to a huge discovery.”

Acting on intelligence

Neighbourhood sergeant Lucy Leicester added: “We will continue to act on your intelligence and the information members of the public share with us is vital in our teams taking actions such as this.

“Would you know if a property was being used to cultivate drugs? A powerful distinctive sweet, sickly aroma; frequent visitors throughout the day and night; blacked out windows; chinks of bright light throughout the night; birds gathering on the roof, particularly in cold weather; noise from fans; large amounts of rubbish including compost bags; electricity metre being tampered with.

“Individually these activities may seem commonplace, however, together may indicate something more suspicious.

“Information from the public plays an incredibly important role in these warrants time and time again – please let us know if you have any concerns about drug activity in your local area.”

Manchester’s Financial Sector Embraces Digital Transformation: The Rise of Forex Trading Platforms in the UK

0

In recent years, Manchester has grown as a key player in the UK’s financial sector, carefully carving its way amidst global economic titans. With an emergent generation of UK forex trading platform, the city not only fortifies its economic stance nationally but also echoes its vitality across the global forex market. The art of forex trading, involving the exchange of currencies on a decentralized global market proves itself as a backbone in international trade. By doing this, it slowly became a significant facet of Manchester’s financial evolution and the wider global economy.

Manchester’s Digital Evolution in Finance

Navigating through the intricate weaves of the financial fabric, Manchester stands tall as a backbone of digital adaptation in finance, hence, demonstrating serious planning and technological adeptness. In 2019, the Greater Manchester Combined Authority unveiled its Greater Manchester Local Industrial Strategy titled “Digital”. In 2020 it followed with “Greater Manchester Digital Blueprint”, articulating a three-year vision to catapult the city region amongst the top five digital cities in Europe. Significantly, the wave of fintech innovations, such as blockchain and artificial intelligence, has altered transactional procedures and carefully reshaped trading and investment strategies. An example is “Revolut”, a finance app offering currency exchange services with no hidden fees, emerging as a good example by prioritizing user-friendly interfaces and digital efficiency. In the terrain of trading, algorithms and machine learning now stand tall by crafting strategies that reduce risks while maximizing profits, thereby inviting a broader spectrum of participants into the market.

Forex Trading: A Global Phenomenon

Encompassing a huge daily trading volume exceeding £4 trillion, the foreign exchange (forex) market stands as the world’s largest financial market. At its core, forex trading requires the simultaneous buying and selling of currencies, dictating international trade and investments by influencing currency values. This might provoke the question: what is forex trading? It’s a question with diverse answers, connected tightly to aspects of accessibility, liquidity and market dynamics. The allure of forex, particularly for UK investors, is heavily rooted in these facets, also presenting the potential for profit amidst market fluctuations. The influential impact of forex trading cascades globally, steering economies by determining exchange rates and subtly calculating the balance of trade. For nations like the UK, an animated forex market not only influences domestic financial stability but also echoes through its international trade endeavours.

The Advent of UK Forex Trading Platforms

A transformative advent in the realm of forex trading within the UK has been remarkably moulded by the emergence of digital trading platforms, seamlessly decentralizing access and simplifying the world of currency exchange for a vast array of investors. The digital sphere has not only unlocked doors to global markets around the clock but also empowered traders with a variety of tools and real-time data, thereby pushing down barriers such as geographical confines and informational imbalance. Beginner traders find peace in intuitive interfaces and educational resources, while professional ones appreciate the analytic tools and instant execution of trades. This digital union of accessibility, knowledge and functionality pivots not merely as a convenience but as a potent catalyst, hence, gradually democratizing forex trading across diverse demographic and experiential spectra in the UK. Consequently, this digital wave preserves a self-reinforcing cycle, wherein enhanced accessibility invites augmented participation, which in turn, propels further technological advancements.

Manchester’s Role in Promoting Financial Literacy

Embarking on a journey to promulgate financial literacy, Manchester has emerged as a nurturing ground where education and trading platforms craft a robust framework for prospective forex traders. The city has kindled a spectrum of initiatives, ranging from grassroots workshops to expansive seminars, each carefully designed to illuminate the nuances of forex trading. For those inclined to self-navigate their learning journey, platforms like “EventBrite ” and academies such as “The Knowledge Academy” offer a variety of opportunities. These platforms host free and chargeable seminars and workshops about forex trading, accessible to all types of traders. Local organizations and trading clubs offer events as well, thus, enabling beginners and experts alike to navigate through the world of currency markets. It is within these forums that theoretical knowledge meets practical skills, ensuring participants are not only familiar with trading terminology but also adept at using them in real-world scenarios. By prioritizing education, Manchester not only increases the competency of its residents but also subtly amplifies its place as an epicenter for forex trading.

Rochdale groundsman sanctioned and suspended for racial abuse

Rochdale head groundsman Joshua Haigh has been suspended for six weeks after being found guilty of racially abusing a member of the media following a game against Stockport County in February.

Haigh’s conduct was deemed to be an “aggravated breach” of FA Rule E3 following an investigation by an Independent Regulatory Commission. Haigh denied the charge and has the right to appeal.

The six-week suspension includes all football-related activity and includes a stadium ban for the matchday of any Rochdale fixture during that time, running up until and including November 20.

He is also required to take an FA education course and pay £2,000 towards the commission’s costs.

He has also been warned about his future conduct.

Steward, Marler and Martin to start for England

0

Freddie Steward will start at full-back for England in Saturday’s World Cup semi-final against South Africa as one of three changes made by head coach Steve Borthwick.

Steward replaces Marcus Smith, who has been struggling with a facial injury, while Joe Marler returns at loosehead prop and George Martin gets the nod in the second row.

Ollie Chessum and Ellis Genge drop to the bench after starting the win over Fiji on Sunday.

The Springboks go into the clash as overwhelming favourites after beating France 29-28 in a classic quarter-final and Borthwick accepts his players will have to be “at their very best” if they want to get through to a meeting with either New Zealand or Argentina.

He said: “After an excellent few days’ preparation in Paris, we look forward to the challenge of playing the world champions and number one ranked team in the world.

“Through this tournament the team has progressed, with the players repeatedly finding a way to win, sometimes in challenging circumstances. We will once again need to be at our very best this weekend as we face an excellent team in South Africa.

“There is no doubt the players will truly relish the challenge of knockout rugby under the lights in Paris. These players will, as they have done in every game of this tournament, give absolutely everything in the semi-final to get the result we want.

“I also know that our supporters will once again be there in their thousands, playing their part in backing the team with a full voice. To all those who have travelled and to all those lending their support and encouragement from home, I say thank you.”

Harworth Group returns as pavilion partner for third year at UKREiiF 2024

Property regeneration company Harworth Group will return to The UK’s Real Estate Investment & Infrastructure Forum (UKREiiF) next year.

The event – held between May 21-23, 2024 in Leeds – is expected to bring together industry experts, investors, and key stakeholders from the real estate and infrastructure sectors across the UK.

It’s the third consecutive year that Harworth Group has attended.

Diverse portfolio

With a diverse portfolio of projects ranging from strategic land developments to brownfield regeneration, Harworth has played a pivotal role in shaping sustainable communities for the future.

With massive undertakings in Manchester (including Logistics North, one of the largest and most successful developments of its kind to be brought forward in the north of England) and the Midlands (32,000 sq. ft of Grade A industrial & logistics space at a site in Bardon Hill, Leicestershire), Harworth continues to add to its UK-wide portfolio.

Unique platform

UKREiiF provides a unique platform to share insights, engage in networking opportunities, and explore innovative solutions driving the real estate and infrastructure markets forward.

Harworth’s participation in the event demonstrates its commitment to fostering growth, promoting sustainable development, and contributing to the transformation of the UK’s built environment.

Last year its pavilion was hailed a tremendous success, providing visitors with an immersive experience into Harworth’s impressive projects and sustainable development initiatives.

Attendees could interact with key team members, gain valuable industry knowledge, and witness first-hand how Harworth is leading the charge in shaping the future of real estate.

Building on achievements

The third year at UKREiiF allows Harworth to build on the achievements of its previous pavilion and further strengthen its industry relationships. It also offers a prime opportunity for the company to showcase new and exciting developments, discuss investment opportunities, and engage in thought-provoking discussions about the challenges and opportunities facing the sector.

Lynda Shillaw, chief executive of Harworth, said: “UK REiiF has become a key event in the Harworth calendar, and a great way for us to engage with a wide array of stakeholders, share ideas and demonstrate the enormous value that Harworth can deliver for communities up and down the country.

“We are delighted to be returning again in 2024 with an exciting line-up of events in the Harworth pavilion and we look forward to building many more relationships across the real estate industry.”

Keith Griffiths, chief executive officer and founder of UKREiiF, said: “Harworth’s pavilion last year was a highlight of the event, providing attendees with an insight into their impressive portfolio of projects and sustainable development initiatives.

“We look forward to seeing how the company continues to shape the future of real estate and contribute to the transformation of the UK’s built environment.”

Next year’s event

Led by the UK’s leading property events company Built Environment Networking and supported by some of the biggest UK property and infrastructure companies, the third annual UKREiiF event will be held in Leeds on 21-23 May 2024.

The forum will attract inward investment, generate economic growth, and drive a more sustainable and inclusive culture within the property and construction industries.

Springboks unchanged as they eye 2019 repeat against England

0

South Africa are hoping the experience of winning the 2019 World Cup final against England will prove pivotal in Saturday’s last-four clash in Paris.

The Springboks prevailed 32-12 four years ago in Japan and today named 15 players from that meeting in the 23 for this weekend’s re-match.

It also means an unchanged matchday group from that which beat tournament hosts France in such thrilling fashion on Sunday.

Coach Jacques Nienaber said: “We’ve been building a quality squad for the last few years so that we could be in this position going into the knockout matches.

“We have a squad of 33 players, all of whom are very closely matched in terms of their skill and quality of play which made it tempting to make changes this week and it was tough to select this group both last week and this week. But we feel it’s now time to go with the players in the squad who we believe are in their best form.

“This may not have much significance, but the fact remains that these players have been here before, and they know what it will take to defeat a top-quality team such as England.

“Competition for places in the team is very tight and the coaches had a few in depth discussions before finalising the team.

“We have players like Lukhanyo Am, Canan Moodie, Andre Esterhuizen, Jasper Wiese, Jean Kleyn, and the list goes on, who are all good enough to be in this team and would have fitted in and done the job just well as the other players.

“But we can only select 23 and everyone in this group is aligned and understands that the country comes first.

“We are playing for our friends, family and the 60 million people at home who have been supporting us through thick and thin and we are determined to continue giving them hope and something to smile about.”

South Africa are overwhelming favourites against an England side that saw off Fiji to make the semis, but Nienaber remains wary of Steve Borthwick’s men.

“They come off five victories in a row and they are high on confidence. They have a quality pack and world-class backs who can create magic on the field, and those who are writing them off are making a major mistake,” he added.

“Like us, they are one game away from a World Cup final and we’ve seen through the history of the tournament that England raise their game for these matches. If we lose, we have to play the third-place play-off – which no team wants to do.

“We are closely matched in terms of average player age and caps, both teams are used to playing on the biggest stage. This is do-or-die if either of wants to the lift the trophy next week, so neither side will give an inch.”

Marc Skinner calls for Champions League rule changes as his Manchester United side miss out on qualification

Manchester United boss Marc Skinner says being drawn against Paris Saint-Germain at the Women’s Champions League qualifying stage is “something that needs to be addressed.”

After coming back to secure a draw in the first leg, Skinner’s side, despite playing some great football, were beaten 3-1 in the return last night to go out 4-2 on aggregate. Skinner had made his feelings about his side’s tough draw known prior and continued to express his feelings post-match.

He said: “It’s crazy that we have to play PSG in this qualifying round, crazy.

“It needs to be something that is addressed.”

Tensions were raised when United forward Leah Galton’s header 20 minutes from time was controversially ruled out for a foul on the goalkeeper, a decision Skinner was not too pleased with.

Despite the loss, he was determined not to let this affect his side going forward and instead use it as motivation to come back and secure a different result next season.

He told MUTV: “We’ve scored a goal that should stand. It’s ridiculous. If that’s the level of officiating at this standard, it’s not good enough.

“That’s a goal, and we’re in the ascendancy then to get more. We’ve come into an intimidating situation, and we’ve been the better team.

“We will learn from it. We’ll come back stronger. We got a taste of it.

“That’s all credit to our players and shows everybody else in Europe what they’re going to get used to over the next few years

“We as a team are absolutely growing and going to where we want to be. We’re not going to let anybody stand in our way.

“I’m going to make sure we’re driven to make sure we are a constant fixture in the Champions League.”
