Financial advice platform Open Money bolsters senior team with two experienced hires

Financial advice platform Open Money has made two exciting new senior hires in brand new positions within the business, as it looks to bolster its growing team and finance expertise.

Founded to plug what it calls ‘the advice gap’, Open Money is a service created to help the millions of people who would benefit from financial advice but either can’t afford it, or are unable to access it. Combining sophisticated technology with real people, it provides personalised, tailored financial advice to help people reach their goals.

Open Money’s new Chief Finance Officer is Michael Davis, who joins the business with a wealth of experience in a wide variety of finance and non-finance related roles, predominantly within the regulated financial services industry.

An experienced board member who is passionate about building and leading high performing teams to deliver against complex and far-reaching business requirements, Davis’ areas of expertise include managing large, complex budgets, understanding and leveraging commercial performance, and developing and implementing business transformation programmes.

Davis has previously worked in a number of roles for organisations including HSBC, Towergate Insurance and Co-Op General Insurance. Most recently, he was Chief Financial Officer at ME Group Holdings Ltd, a FinTech start-up, where he was responsible for all aspects of financial strategy and HR, reporting directly into the Group CEO and Group Chairman.

Davis arrives at Open Money with the experience to help build on the existing foundations and team skill sets, driving the company forward as it enters a new period of growth. Working closely with CEO and founder, Anthony Morrow, and the rest of the senior management team, Davis will be tasked primarily with ensuring that Open Money has the right financial strategy in place to reach its impressive expansion targets.

Joining him on the senior management team as Chief Operating Officer is James Higgins, who also arrives with years of experience in driving major organisational change programmes within businesses.

A focused senior leader and market strategist with a proven record of success in delivering innovative financial technology solutions, Higgins is renowned for his ability to infuse teams with cutting-edge strategy, thought leadership, and operational excellence.
Higgins’ areas of direct expertise include financial regulation, new product development and the foreign exchange market. Throughout his career, he has held a number of positions at organisations including Morgan Stanley, BNY Mellon and Access Systems UK Ltd. Most recently, Higgins was International and Complex Payments Lead at NatWest Ltd, where he was responsible for all technology applications and processes.
At Open Money, Higgins will be responsible for software and tech engineering, product development and delivery. He will be tasked with looking at the overall operational business model at various levels, working out the best way to draw upon existing resources, and highlight focus areas of investment in this new period of growth.
His arrival will also enable Morrow to get out into the field and be the face of Open Money, while day-to-day team operations are effectively managed.

On the appointments, Open Money founder and CEO, Anthony Morrow, said: “We’ve been on an exciting journey over the past couple of years, and these new appointments are testament to our ambitions moving forward as a business.

“Both Michael and James bring an extensive wealth of relevant knowledge and expertise in the sector, and they also understand Open Money’s vision and what we are trying to achieve. This will help us massively as we continue to grow further and plug the advice gap, making financial advice accessible for all.”

SETTIO PROPERTY EXPERIENCE SECURES FIRST APPOINTMENT AS RECOMMENDED PARTNER ON MAJOR RESIDENTIAL SCHEME IN MANCHESTER

Premium residential lettings and management business selected by developer Far East Consortium (FEC) for apartments and townhouses at MeadowSide

Premium residential lettings and management business Settio Property Experience has secured its first appointment as recommended partner on a major development in Manchester.

The growing business was selected by developer Far East Consortium (FEC) for apartments and townhouses at its MeadowSide scheme, which on completion will provide a total of 756 properties, bordering Angel Meadow, the largest green space in central Manchester.

Co-founded in 2017 by experienced agents Sam Fitz-Hugh and Chris Parsonage, Settio has offices in Manchester and Singapore dedicated to providing a ‘seamless, high end experience’ for clients including landlords, developers, buyers and tenants.

While the appointment on MeadowSide by FEC represents Settio’s first appointment as recommended partner on such a major residential scheme, the firm already manages a growing portfolio of residential property for developers and landlords in schemes throughout Manchester, with a confirmed pipeline set to reach 400 apartments under management in 2021.

Other schemes in central Manchester where Settio provides its market-leading lettings and management services include Deansgate Square, Axis Tower, Lightbox Media City, Local Blackfriars and Local Crescent, with a strengthening pipeline of properties at Crown Street and Castle Wharf.

Sam said: “Our appointment by FEC represents a landmark achievement for Settio as we make our mark in Manchester with our unique, all-inclusive approach to the provision of five-star property management services on behalf of an increasing number of valued clients.”

Sam and Chris relocated from London, where they worked with internationally renowned developers on large scale sites in prime locations, to meet the growing expectations of clients in greater Manchester and the Far East.

Unlike a traditional agent, the premium, service-driven residential lettings and management business, provides ‘total peace of mind’ to clients, such as those with FEC, by offering an ‘all inclusive’ package covering an all-encompassing range of services from off-plan investment support right through to future resale, all supported by some of the latest property technology.

Sam explained: “The traditional agency model hasn’t changed in 30 years – apart from the introduction of e-mail – and by re-imagining the industry with a fresh approach and higher expectations, we have been able to build our business and fee structure to align our motivations with that of a landlord.

“Our all-inclusive approach gives clients peace of mind in the knowledge that we’re financially motivated to secure the best tenants in the market and retain them with high quality service and management for as long as possible; while a traditional model generates income for an agency, and cost to a landlord, each time a tenancy changes over.’’

Andrew Bradley-Nixon, the Manchester-based sales and marketing director of FEC, said: “The emphasis that Sam and Chris place on their relationship with developers, their provision of an all-inclusive service and keen focus on securing and keeping the best residents were all key factors in our decision to appoint them on our flagship scheme at MeadowSide and we look forward to working with them to strengthen our already healthy pipeline of sales.”

“THE MENTOR” PODCAST Show will offer £15,000 in seed funding for diverse rising stars and drive positive social change

Businessman Ric Lewis and David ‘Sideman’ Whitely have teamed up for a brand new podcast, “The Mentor”, in which Ric will help three young rising stars from underrepresented communities and under-resourced backgrounds achieve their personal and business dreams.

Ric will personally mentor the budding entrepreneurs over 12 weeks, drawing on his +30-year career in business and giving them £5,000 each in backing or seed funding to kick-start their ambitions. Sideman is the voice of the series, weaving together the stories with humour and warmth, and undertaking his own journey with Ric.

The three rising stars each bring their own unique stories and challenges to the series:
● Lois: a 17-year-old from Warrington. She’s planning her start at university; aiming to be the first person in her family to go to university
● Solomon: a 15-year-old from Manchester. He’s entrepreneurial and wants to start his own clothing line to bring recognition to his City
● Toni: a 21-year-old Cambridge graduate with the world at his feet. At this juncture of his life he wants to make the best possible choices as he enters the world of work

Voted the most influential black person in Britain in the 2019 Powerlist, Ric is Executive Chairman of real estate investment management firm Tristan Capital Partners. He is also founder of The Black Heart Foundation, a charity that provides scholarships to young people otherwise unable to afford higher or further education.

Earlier this year, the Foundation successfully raised over £1,500,000 through the “Each Day. Every Day.” crowdfunding campaign, culminating in a £500,000 donation from music icon Stormzy’s #Merky Foundation. The campaign has already helped The Black Heart Foundation almost double the number of young people it has helped through its scholarship programme to date, taking the total to 197 scholars at 80+ UK universities and schools.

Manchester audio-on-demand company Crowd Network, in partnership with The Black Heart Foundation, is developing the podcast. All profits from the first series will go to The Black Heart Foundation and Crowd Network plan to take on board and train a Black Heart Scholar, who will work on subsequent seasons of The Mentor.

Ric Lewis said: “When the team told me about their plans for the show it resonated with me instantly. Creating a podcast that is entertaining, rewards ambition but has a big heart and invests real time in people feels fresh and relevant given the challenges we face in our society today. The Mentor is a purposeful antidote to shows like The Apprentice, focussed on thoughtfully coaching a group of outstanding young people through crunch points in their lives, as we help them speed on their path to bigger, better and remarkable.”

Sideman said: “I’m happy that Ric hollered at me to work with him on this amazing concept. What Ric is doing with his Black Heart Foundation is phenomenal. The current climate has increased my interest in working with young people to bring about change and opportunities so this is a perfect fit for me.”

Mike Carr, CEO at Crowd Network said: “The Mentor is a podcast that will blaze a trail in the industry. It is incredibly entertaining, but its message of social change is so important and one we feel we have a duty to communicate.

“It is a privilege to be working with The Black Heart Foundation who do so much good for our society. When we launched as a company we committed to addressing the lack of diversity in the creative industries and giving opportunities to those from underprivileged backgrounds. This podcast is just one of the ways we are looking to have a positive impact in that space.”

The Mentor launches today with episodes released every Tuesday through Acast and available to download on all major podcast platforms.

AO JOINS FORCES WITH SSAFA

Online electricals retailer AO has announced a national partnership with SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity. As SSAFA’s white goods supplier of choice, beneficiaries now have access to a range of appliances at a fixed discounted price.

The Supported Living arm of the Bolton-based retailer has negotiated hard with its supply partners to secure the best value for money for SSAFAs beneficiaries. To ensure that SSAFA can make a lasting intervention, there will also be a three-year warranty to extend the life of these essential products purchased.

Since the launch in June, AO has delivered 148 items to members of the Armed Forces community and 18 of the 90 SSAFA branches are already benefiting from the partnership. The appliances are purchased with funds gathered by SSAFA from a range of benevolent funds, which provide financial assistance to those in need in the Armed Forces community.

Johanna Kaufmann, a SSAFA volunteer who is Secretary of SSAFA’s Clwyd Division, said: “The process is extremely straightforward and with installation included in the quotation, there are no hidden costs.”

“For example, we recently supported a newly divorced client and facilitated a grant to buy white goods for the accommodation he was moving into. As well as the appliances, we were able add a laptop, which was fantastic and meant he could stay in touch with his children. The team at AO is very easy to deal with and couldn’t be more helpful – I recommend them very highly.”

Dave Sanderson, Business Development Manager at AO Business, said: “We’re really pleased to have brought SSAFA onboard as a national partner. At AO, we’re trusted to put the customer first and we believe everybody deserves an excellent experience, no matter what your circumstance. By negotiating hard with suppliers, we’re proud to be helping SSAFA in supporting even more beneficiaries than before.”

Gary Williams, Head of Specialist Services at SSAFA, said: “The partnership with AO has come at a time where beneficiaries need more help and support than ever. The fixed prices will help our funds go significantly further, so we can help all those in the Armed Forces community who need it most.”

The Supported Living division of AO Business was established in April 2019 to provide both appliances and fantastic customer service to charities and housing associations, making products more affordable for those who need them.

Founded in 1885, SSAFA is the UK’s oldest national Armed Forces charity. From supporting the transition back into civilian life to offering financial aid, the charity assisted over 85,000 people in 2019.

James Fisher AIS and SRO Solutions launch new digital partnership for maritime and offshore sectors

0

A new digital partnership is being announced which aims to create one of the most innovative and advanced asset management systems in the maritime and offshore sectors.

The collaboration is being launched by James Fisher Asset Information Services (AIS) and Manchester-based tech company SRO Solutions which represents tech giant IBM’s Maximo software in the marine industry. For the first time it will see four proven technologies offered as one package supported by experienced marine and offshore teams from AIS and SRO Solutions fusing their combined expertise. The four technologies (see notes to editors) are IBM’s Maximo asset management software and SRO’s Data Replication Solution together with AIS’s digital twin platform R2S, and Mimic Condition Monitoring (CM).

SRO Solutions founder Tony Lackey, a trained marine engineer, said the new partnership is a hugely exciting moment for the sector as it will drive massive digital innovation in the efficient management of thousands of pieces of equipment between onshore and offshore oil rigs and fleets of ships.

“I know the team from James Fisher AIS well and we began to discover that an increasing number of offshore companies were investing in both IBM’s Maximo and AIS’s R2S and Mimic CM technologies but leaving them in silos unaware how to maximise the software through synchronising the kit,” he said. “This partnership tackles that problem for companies which already own the software but it also brings a new very powerful product to the marketplace for companies looking to radically improve their asset management operations. Bringing the four pieces of software together with the industry and domain expertise of SRO and AIS will help businesses drive massive cost and time savings as well as make maintenance work safer and enable more remote work. When you look at how R2S and Maximo save companies literally millions by eliminating waste and reducing equipment breakdown it is very exciting to see what we can do together for customers.”

“As an example, Maximo is designed to manage machinery maintenance preventing breakdown. But this is just on a piece of paper, the engineer cannot see the equipment or where it sits on the rig or ship. And this is where the R2S digital twin comes in. Through R2S, engineers from the comfort of their office, can navigate through an immersive real-world replica of the ship or rig and explore around a specific piece of kit. They can then see what else is around the equipment, such as say a tank which would make hot work unsafe and then plan their work in advance rather than wasting time on the spot. Giving Maximo effectively a pair of eyes through R2S is real digital innovation which will change the industry for the better.”

Sean Huff, AIS Managing Director, said: “I’m particularly excited to be partnering with SRO, the synergies between the companies and the technologies are very attractive. The R2S digital twin technology and the Mimic condition monitoring system for instance provide operational and real-time engineering information to owners and operators of complex maritime assets to deliver operational efficiencies and cost savings. Both R2S and Mimic link directly to the SRO-deployed and maintained Maximo systems to drive additional value. The partnership between AIS and SRO allows for a significant number of synergies in a common client pool, including widening our collective footprint in the maritime sector via the sharing of resources.”

Paul Mount, Mimic General Manager said: “Whereas many vessel owners and operators have typically operated on a just-in-time reactive basis to equipment failure, we’ve seen that model come under significant financial, and during the Covid-19 pandemic, operational pressure. In addition, a new cohort of tech and financial savvy asset owners are challenging industry norms, and we’re actively engaged in helping them realise their digital objectives. This partnership is one such area where both companies have identified where inefficiency exists in the industry and have come together with a comprehensive initial package.”

IN4.0 Group to lead Greater Manchester’s pioneering technology hub The Landing at MediaCityUK into a new era of innovation excellence

0

North West based IN4.0 Group, led by entrepreneurs Mo Isap and Andy Beaden, has taken the helm of digital technology hub, The Landing, at MediaCityUK.

The Landing has played a major role in establishing Greater Manchester as a world leading digital city-region, at the heart of Salford’s innovation district.

IN4.0 plans to build on this great pedigree, by scaling a pioneering, inclusive eco-system to drive prosperity across the North.

The company has a proven track record in accelerating digital technology adoption within SMEs and larger businesses, and this expertise will further enhance the delivery of innovation excellence from the hub.

Working in partnership with Salford’s chief digital officer Jon Corner, IN4.0 will be creating a Connected Cities Innovation Lab with a specific focus on commercialising research and development, creating new applications for technology and making adoption more accessible and affordable for businesses.

The Group will be expanding business growth services provided by IN4.0 with The Landing across the North through a ‘hub and club’ membership model, further creating an inclusive and diverse eco-system.

A priority will be on supporting and boosting the number of female founders and entrepreneurs from minority backgrounds, with tailored programmes and mentorship that break the barriers to entry and accelerate their start-ups to scale, thus creating role models that will inspire a new, more diverse generation of tech pioneers.

Mo Isap CEO of IN4.0 Group and co-chair of the Greater Manchester Local Enterprise Partnership, said: “Digital technology today is the backbone of all industries, regardless of the nature and type of business.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted many inequalities which we will be addressing head on.

“One of our primary objectives is to create the most diverse and inclusive innovation community.

“By doing this deliberately ensures that social value is on a par with economic value so that all citizens young and old in the region will have the opportunity to succeed and break new ground in our districts.

“This is an ambition we share unequivocally with Salford City Council.”

He continued: “MediaCityUK is a leading destination for the digital, tech and creative media industries – we will further augment this reputation to attract the best businesses and talent globally.

“It is our intention to be a major catalyst towards achieving Greater Manchester’s innovation ambitions and thus ensuring the UK leads in the Fourth Industrial Revolution.”

IN4.0’s blueprint for The Landing includes a pan-northern super angel seed investment fund.

The Group’s pedigree in technology training will also realise the vision for the IN4.0 Talent City at MediaCityUK, building on the existing relationships with regional universities including the University of Salford and University of Central Lancashire, along with attracting the best private sector technology training providers to create a unique industry facing talent development campus.

This new partnership with Salford City Council marks an exciting next chapter for the IN4.0 Group which over the past two years has successfully delivered a number of their programmes at The Landing including IN4.0 Access, an industrial disruptive technologies accelerator and DEVA/hack, a creative digital hackathon with Salford youngsters to nurture the next generation of digital entrepreneurs.

Salford City Mayor Paul Dennett said: “Salford is a leading digital city and our ambitions continue as we provide an environment where nurtured local tech talent can flourish while creating jobs and growth in the local economy. We are very proud to be recognised nationally for our digital revolution.

“IN4.0 taking charge of The Landing is a positive step forward for this city. They will bring in their expertise and talent to help grow small and medium sized businesses with all the support they need under one roof at MediaCityUK.”

Debbie Brown, strategic director of Service Reform at Salford City Council, said: “We are experiencing significant digital transformation in Salford – a journey that ranges from working with high tech national companies based in the city to helping more than 8,000 of our most excluded residents to get online and transform their lives digitally.

“IN4.0 fit perfectly into our ambitions and will make sure that The Landing moves into a new and exciting phase. We look forward to working closely together and the successes that follow.”

Chairman of IN4.0 Group Andy Beaden said: “IN4.0 with The Landing will be driving innovation and collaboration through our shared vision to enable technology adoption, increasing productivity and growth across all sectors.

“We bring together some incredible partners respectively, such as BAE Systems, The IET, Vodafone, Barclays, UP Ventures and AWS to name a few. We will actively secure more partners to work with.

“The possibilities are incredible.

“The Landing also offers an amazing asset with Social 7, housing state of the art conferencing facilities, restaurant, lounge and private cinema. It will serve as an exciting destination, complimenting all of our activities.”

Co-operatives UK announces new Chief Executive

Rose Marley will be joining Co-operatives UK as Chief Executive in January 2021. She joins the trade body for Britain’s co-operative sector at a crucial moment, when the economy is looking to ‘build back better’ from the impact of Covid-19.

The new appointment comes at a time when there is a real appetite for different ways of doing business, with co-ops and other forms of social enterprise well-placed in the post-Covid economy. Co-ops are resilient, with new co-op start-ups nearly twice as likely to survive the first crucial five years as other types of business.1

Co-operatives UK is the network for Britain’s thousands of co-operatives – from high street retailers to community owned pubs, fan owned football clubs to farmer controlled businesses – together they are worth over £38 billion to the British economy.

With a strong background in creative industries, technology, the gig economy and entrepreneurship, Rose is a passionate advocate for social enterprise and values-led business.

Rose said: “I couldn’t be more excited about joining Co-operatives UK. There has never been a more important moment to harness the enthusiasm of a new generation for a fairer way of doing business.

“The co-op movement has always been about disrupting the status quo, encouraging people to take responsibility for themselves and others. In the past it was ensuring there was “no chalk in our flour”, now it is about digital platforms, or plastic in our environment or a gig economy that denies young people the stability and training they need to establish themselves in life.”

“We have an historic opportunity now to merge co-operative principles with digital technology to create the kind of sustainable, equitable platforms that society needs.”

She continues, “Over the past 20 years as a social entrepreneur I have worked to increase social mobility, give our young people meaningful employment, a start, a chance in life. I look forward to bringing that same spirit and energy to enthusing the next generation of co-operators about the world-changing potential of the co-operative movement.”

Chair of Co-operatives UK Don Morris said: “We are delighted to have Rose on board. She brings a fresh approach to the challenges facing entrepreneurs, co-operatives, community business and social enterprise today.

In the same way that co-ops are often set up to disrupt mainstream business models – giving ownership and decision making powers to workers, customers and communities – we expect Rose to help us shake up the way that co-ops are perceived.

“Yes, they are best known as high street convenience stores. But they are also tech companies, arts venues, freelancers working collectively, innovators, activists and much more. We think Rose will fit right in!”

Manchester Apartments and University Academy 92 lead the regeneration of Trafford, with the opening of brand-new Academy Apartments

0

Leading city centre lettings firm Manchester Apartments, has opened the doors of its latest apartment building – Academy Apartments. Despite the interruptions that Covid-19 has caused the property industry, the development has been delivered on time with no delay to the first residents moving in.

Academy Apartments has been developed to provide first-class accommodation to students studying at University Academy 92 (UA92) – the higher education institution co-founded by Manchester United’s legendary Class of 92: Gary and Phil Neville, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt, as well as Lancaster University.

Throughout the development, Beech Holdings worked closely with UA92 to ensure that the apartments delivered the kind of homes those studying at UA92 wanted. Speaking on behalf of UA92 on the collaboration, Gareth Smith, Director of Student Affairs at University Academy 92 commented: “UA92 is delighted to be recommending Academy Apartments to our students. We know the accommodation provided by Manchester Apartments is good quality, safe and brilliant for our tenants. Manchester Apartments have given us peace of mind in terms of COVID-19, the apartments are completely self-contained with en-suite and personal kitchen facilities, so our students know their apartments are clean and Covid secure.”

In total, Academy Apartments is comprised of 90 high-spec, stylish properties, aimed at students and young professionals who are studying and working in and around Salford Quays and Media city.

Purchased in 2018, the building has been refurbished by leading UK developer and Manchester Apartment’s parent company – Beech Holdings. Previously a disused office block, the building is now an energy efficient, modern space for residents to thrive. As Trafford continues to go through a significant period of regeneration and investment, Academy Apartments is positioned perfectly to provide homes to what is and will continue to be a growing local population.
Academy Apartments is Beech Holdings’ second venture in the Trafford regeneration scheme, after the successful delivery of its Westpoint development. First launching in late 2018, Westpoint is one of Beech Holdings’ most popular and largest developments to date. Manchester Apartments have worked closely with Trafford Council over the last 18 months, delivering accommodation to those wanting to reside in the area. Westpoint comprises of 317 apartments which are all now fully let for the third year running thanks to the growth and expansion of the area and the popularity of Beech Holdings’ developments.

Jonathan Griffiths, Director of Property and Building Management at Beech Holdings commented: “Working with UA92 and Trafford Council has been a fantastic opportunity to put something back into the Trafford Area. After the success of Westpoint and its high occupancy, we knew Academy Apartments would be well received. Our high quality apartments offer students a great place to live whilst they carry out their studies. The apartments are self-contained units, with no shared kitchens or bathrooms, so Academy Apartments is extremely Covid friendly”

Stephen Beech, CEO of Beech Holdings commented: “We realised a couple of years ago that Trafford stood out as an area with great potential for property development. The regeneration of Trafford has attracted amazing projects such as UA92 and we are incredibly proud to have contributed to the rejuvenation of the area. Academy Apartments is just one part of what we have planned in this area, on top of the 35m already invested into Trafford by Beech Holdings”

The completion of Academy Apartments feeds into Beech Holdings and Manchester Apartments plan to expedite the delivery of over 1,000 apartments across the next 2 years, meeting the high tenant demand from Manchester’s growing population.
