Half of Manchester’s Workforce Benefit from Better Mental Health Working from Home

A recent UK survey into remote working attitudes has revealed that half of Manchester’s workforce say their mental health is better when working from home.

The study, commissioned by free conference call providers WHYPAY?, found that 50% of Manchester employees would like to have some level of remote working offered to them long-term, and a quarter of workers would even choose to take a significant pay cut to work from home permanently.

Happier workers

A key find from WHYPAY’s survey is that Manchester employees have found themselves to be feeling more cheery and upbeat since they have started to work from home.

The data reveals that 25% now feel that they are “all-round” happier people, and another 25% admit that they feel more energised to work as a result of not having to commute anymore.

Speaking about these statistics, Nadia Finer, Founder of Shy and Mighty, said: “The fact that there is so much scary stuff happening in the world that we have no control over, can make us feel overwhelmed and powerless. Being snuggled up at home in our little bubbles helps to make us feel safer. But, going back out into the world feels scarier than it did before”.

Elliot Green, Chief Marketing Officer at WHYPAY, added: “Clearly, the effects of lockdown on mental health are multifaceted and vary massively depending on individual circumstances. There can be no doubt that reducing social contact both inside and outside the workplace will be detrimental to our wellbeing, but the fact that such a significant proportion of the workforce believe their mental health has improved as a result of working from cannot be ignored. “

More productive employees

It also seems that the workforce of Manchester are more productive as a result of working from home – with 55% admitting they now get more work done than ever.

Anthony Klokkou, Managing Director of Sleeping Giant Media, spoke about how the lockdown has had a positive impact on his company’s work ethic and said: “We have seen that remote working can work well, for us at least, and have worked hard to keep communication high across the business, whilst supporting the cultural development that is happening.”

Adding to this, Mr Green from WHYPAY, said: “What we’re seeing is a shift in mindset as many employees realise they can work just as well, if not more effectively, from home. With the right communication technology, remote staff can connect and collaborate very successfully.”

A changed view of work

WHYPAY’s data furthermore reveals that 51% of Manchester employees say that their views of their current job have changed as a result of working from home.

As well as this, 1 in 5 of the city’s workers have even admitted they would consider switching to a job that offers remote working going forward.

Referring to these eye-opening statistics, Psychology Expert, Katie Smith, said: “This highlights the level of fear that many are currently experiencing, as a result of the threat of harm that COVID has brought. If this fear is not respected as a genuine consideration by employers, then it can manifest into anxieties for the employee from a sense of lack of feeling in control, and a threat to personal safety.”

A remote future going forward?

According to the overall findings of WHYPAY?’s survey, it seems that the COVID-19 pandemic has undoubtedly shifted the city of Manchester’s attitudes of the “conventional” 9 to 5 days in the office.

On this, Dennis Relojo-Howell, founder of psychology website Psychreg, said: “COVID-19 has changed the world. One of the biggest day-to-day changes is that thousands of businesses had to close their doors and learn how to work from home.”

“But now we’ve experienced this way of life, we might not ever go back to the traditional office as we know it. Some data has uncovered that many people prefer working at home, indicating that the future may be remote. To better support individuals, we also have to take into account what WHYPAY statistics has revealed.”

Code Computerlove launches new services for businesses impacted by Covid-19

Digital product and service company Code Computerlove has launched a range of new services on the back of insights into the key challenges businesses are facing amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Manchester based agency has responded to three salient ways organisations are changing their digital strategies to adapt to consumer behaviours impacted by the pandemic; adapting their business model to introduce D2C channels, preparing new revenue channels in light of continued unpredictability and, for those businesses that are thriving, getting more things done faster.

Code’s new services have been designed to enable businesses to respond quickly to these foremost challenges with tailored two-week design sprint programmes, using data, research and idea generation techniques that involve all key stakeholders to drive business-wide improvements.

Code’s business development director, Steve Peters explains:

“As a company that partners with businesses from scale-ups through to corporations with large in-house development teams, we’ve been using design sprints successfully to solve all kinds of business problems for many years. Then having helped a number of businesses to adapt to the Covid-era, we’ve taken a proven process and created tailored design sprint agendas based around three core challenges. By packaging our services into a rapid, valuable set of activities we can make a difference quickly and cater for business’ needs.

“Whether organisations need to ‘disrupt’ and change their business model, ‘grow’ to prepare for an unpredictable 2021 or ‘accelerate’ to capitalise quicker on new market opportunities, each service is designed to result in tangible change.

“As well as identifying key ways that business need to change in response to the pandemic, we also see that they need to do it at speed. Businesses need to act now, not later and the two-week format is ideal for making progress rapidly and adding value immediately.

“For businesses that are finding it hard to react, now is the moment to amplify the importance of digital inside the organisation, focussing on effectiveness and delivering new lines of revenue.

“For businesses that are thriving, now is the time to understand how to go even faster and deliver more value to your customers and your business whilst making smart long-term technical decisions.”

Steve adds: “We’ve been working to support a number of our clients in adapting to the impact Covid has had on their businesses, and would be glad to share our knowledge and resources to help others who are navigating their organisations through these torrid times.

“As well as launching our new Covid focused services we will be hosting industry events, talks and content to our website to impart advice and give greater assistance to all businesses in need of help and support.”

IN4.0 with The Landing launches groundbreaking accelerator to inspire and empower female freelancers

A new accelerator will help to kick-start the entrepreneurial careers of 100 women who have lost their jobs due to the pandemic by giving them access to the skills, self-belief and confidence to pursue their ambitions as a freelancer or start-up business.

The FreelanceHER 100 programme will specifically focus on women for whom COVID has resulted in a career break and now a catalyst to entrepreneurship as well mothers seeking to return to economic activity and will also encourage applicants from the BAME community.

Women from across the 10 Greater Manchester districts will have the opportunity to apply for the scheme, which will be delivered online ensuring there are no barriers to access while weekly sessions will also ensure flexibility around work and childcare commitments.

The fully-funded three-month accelerator has been developed by IN4.0 with The Landing, the MediaCityUK-based digital innovation hub, to empower women working in digital, creative, media and technology to meet their business needs and growth ambitions.

On successfully completing the programme, the 100 freelancers will be offered 12 months business co-working space at Arrive in MediaCityUK and innovation hub membership starting at £99 per month.

FreelanceHER 100 will support participants to test and build their business ideas or freelancer service as well as develop knowledge and skills in business modelling, product development, finance, communication, and business development.

The programme will work with specialist partners, female entrepreneurs and industry experts giving participants access to a wide range of networks and a supportive community of female founders and mentors.

IN4.0 with The Landing has appointed leading digital and tech stalwart Naomi Timperley, who will lead FreelanceHER 100 as programme director.

Naomi is well known in the UK’s tech scene as co-founder of Tech North Advocates, a support system for helping start-ups and scale-ups with promotion, investment, and new talent.

She was also named Computer Weekly Most Influential Women in UK Technology 2020.

Naomi said: “This is a first of its kind groundbreaking accelerator for women and led by women, creating an opportunity for 100 female freelancers to thrive in these challenging times.

“We want to empower female freelancers to be strong leaders, to create powerful enterprises and to influence and shape the world through their companies, using collaboration, community, and innovation.”

During the practical and bespoke programme, participants will have access to weekly workshops and peer to peer mentoring led by experts including Tina Boden, co-founder of #MicroBizMatters Day & Micro Business Expert, and Sarah Townsend, author of Survival Skills for Freelancers.

FreelanceHER 100 ambassadors will include Rose Marley, CEO – Sharpe Futures & Cooperatives UK, Beena Puri, Innovation & Partnerships Lead at the Greater Manchester Combined Authority, and Annette Joseph, CEO of Diverse & Equal and former Co-op Digital Delivery Manager.

Naomi added: “We want to support diverse women who have the skills to launch and lead businesses in multiple markets from idea to validation to funding readiness.

“We will ensure they can do this in a safe environment that is flexible and authentic so that after 12 weeks they have the confidence and ability to build and grow their business.”

FreelanceHER 100 has been developed by IN4.0 with The Landing as national figures show how the pandemic has disproportionately impacted women from the slowing down of the economy.

Research conducted by the UK’s Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) has shown that women are around one third more likely to work in a job sector that has been shut down due to the pandemic, such as the hair and beauty sector, retail and hospitality.

And according to new data from LinkedIn women were less likely to be hired during peak lockdown, with female hiring reaching its lowest point in April falling to 41.5%, before recovering to 45.2% in July. In 2019, women accounted for 45.6% of hires in the UK.

While the hiring of women is returning to levels seen before the pandemic, women were starting from a lower baseline and still need to make up for the loss of hires in April and May.

Findings of LinkedIn’s latest Workforce Confidence Index also showed that women are feeling significantly less confident about their future work prospects in comparison to men, and that working mums are bearing the brunt of additional childcare responsibilities.

Mo Isap, CEO of IN4.0 Group said there was an urgent need to provide the right kind of support to a cross section of women who have been impacted by the ongoing pandemic and subsequent lockdowns.

He said: “We know that because of the pandemic there are women who are now out of employment but have ambitions to use their talents to do something for themselves and Covid has catalysed their career into entrepreneurship.

“Now they have an opportunity with us through FreelanceHER 100 to help support them as they embark on that initial journey.

“This is something that is going to be distinctive, something that’s meaningful and is a support intervention to help empower female entrepreneurs and female founders in Greater Manchester.

“We know that setting up as a freelancer can be challenging as it is a new world and there are many aspects that might not be familiar.

“By giving them access to a three-month accelerator and incubator programme led by Naomi Timperley, one of the UK’s leading growth and innovation consultants, to support those entrepreneurs in the digital creative and technology sector, is going to have a significant positive impact.”

He added: “Here at IN4.0 with The Landing we want to promote our shared values of diversity and help shape the exciting future of women in the region and this includes using our expertise and our network to work towards an inclusive entrepreneurial community where everyone can thrive.”

FreelanceHER 100 will launch on 8 January to coincide with #MicroBizMatters Day.

Entries are open from 24 November 2020. Deadline for application is 31 December 2020.

Women in the Law UK founder walks 5km per day to raise £4,000 for mental health charities

0

The founder and chair of Women in the Law UK, Sally Penni MBE, has raised almost £4,000 in sponsorship for mental health and suicide awareness charities by walking at least 5km every day for more than a month. She began what was initially intended to be a month-long challenge on 1 October, with an initial fundraising target of £500, but now plans to continue until the end of November.

The charities benefiting from Miss Penni’s latest fundraising activity are Manchester Mind, the National Suicide Prevention Alliance, Samaritans of Manchester and Salford and Macmillan Cancer Support.

She said, “Covid-19 and the lockdown have put many people’s mental health and wellbeing under intolerable strain so I wanted to do something to recognise this. In particular I wanted to talk about male mental health – as a mother, daughter and sister I strongly believe this is a conversation that we, as a society, should be having.

“I also wanted to make a tangible difference by raising money for charities whose work has been more important than ever but whose incomes have fallen drastically throughout the pandemic. From marathons to workplace coffee mornings, fundraising activities have been cancelled across the board because of the pandemic.

“In the business world, October and November would normally see the function rooms of city centre hotels bursting with guests at awards ceremonies and annual dinners, all of whom would be asked to put their hands in their pockets for charity raffles, each raising thousands of pounds. None of this has happened this year so it is up to all of us, collectively and as individuals, to do what we can to make sure these amazing organisations can keep on with their vital work.

“I have been humbled by the response to my challenge, at a financially difficult time for many people. I started with a target of £500, which rapidly increased to £1,000, then £2,000, then £2,500 – and now we are at almost £4,000.

“Dragging myself out in all weathers has been tough at times but people’s incredible generosity has made it much easier to keep going.”

Her autumn walking challenge will not mark the end of Miss Penni’s fundraising for the year, although it is set to take a more festive turn. In December she plans to reprise last year’s “Sally Sparkles” challenge in which, every day for 20 days, she wore a sparkly outfit.

Sally Sparkles will this year raise money for the Manchester Foundation Trust Charity, The Christie hospital and Save the Children. Miss Penni has set a £3,000 target for this challenge, with £1,000 pledged already.

Miss Penni said, “Sally Sparkles sounds like fun but when you work as a barrister, with a plain black dress code, it can actually be rather difficult. I will be really grateful for each and every donation and, also, if anybody would like to join me in solidarity, even just for one day, and post their pictures online.”

Readers can donate to Sally Penni’s challenges by visiting: https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/SallyPenni1

Miss Penni, who was awarded an MBE for services to diversity in the workplace, social mobility and the law in the most recent Queen’s Birthday Honours list, is the founder and chair of Women in the Law UK, the professional development organisation that promotes gender diversity and women’s progression in the legal sector. The organisation, which has its roots in Manchester, is active nationwide and has held regular events in London, Scotland, Wales, the Midlands and Yorkshire.

Following the implementation of lockdown measures in March this year, Women in the Law UK has operated a wide-ranging programme of webinars and online social events, providing a combination of education and wellbeing support. Several of these webinars are held every week.

In addition, it has stepped up production of its popular “Talking Law” podcast, in which Miss Penni interviews senior figures from the legal profession about their careers, insights, and opinions about the profession.

As well as chairing Women in the Law UK, Miss Penni is a successful barrister-at-law, practising out of Kenworthy’s Chambers, and is vice-chair of the Association of Women Barristers. Outside of the law she carries out a number of non-executive director and trustee roles, and sits on the board of Manchester’s Royal Exchange Theatre.

She is also an author, who has written several books on legal and professional development issues as well as, more recently, the highly successful children’s book Rosie and the Unicorn. Profits from the latter have been donated to three charities and it has been read by the Queen and Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge.

She lives in Manchester with her husband and three children.

To book places at Women in the Law UK’s online events readers should visit www.womeninthelawuk.com or book directly via www.eventbrite.co.uk. Individuals and businesses that are interested in joining Women in the Law UK, or applying for its Charter for firms committed to gender diversity and wellbeing, should email womeninthelawuk@gmail.com.

Hoopla goes from strength-to-strength as e-commerce drives demand

0

While 2020 has been a year to forget in so many ways, Hoopla is reflecting on a year of unprecedented demand for its services resulting in a 50% increase in year-on-year growth.

The pandemic has been a challenging time for a lot of brands but has also created an opportunity for them to evolve and extend their offering and ways of engaging with customers old and new.

E-Commerce has seen unprecedented growth with experts predicting that it will account for almost 30% of total retail sales in 2020 – a 10% increase from the previous year.

Hoopla, the Manchester-based Social Media and Influencer Marketing Agency, has been able to support brands with their e-commerce offering thanks to its hybrid approach to Influencer Marketing with some clients seeing up to 356% increase in sales as a direct result of their work.

Danny Cleaton, Social & Digital Director at Hoopla Marketing said: “The pandemic has been a terrible time in so many ways and a number of brands have been seriously impacted with shop closures and effects to the supply chain. This has meant brands have had to think of more innovative ways to connect with their customers.

“We’ve been able to implement innovative hybrid influencer marketing campaigns for some of these businesses, delivering brands a clear ROI and increase in sales which has enabled brands to grow their business at a fantastic rate.”

This increase in demand has resulted in Hoopla whose current client roster includes Frenchic Paint, Ercol and British Design Shop scooping seven new clients within the past couple of months alone.

New clients include Phs, Little Freddie, Sipful, Anxt, Cover Your Wall, Dr Gabriella Skincare, Lalage Beaumont and Coleman Douglas Pearls.

Greater Manchester EdTech company Near-Life receives Innovate UK funding to accelerate its immersive simulation software for the police force

0

A north west EdTech company has received a £240,000 cash boost to super-charge its immersive police training software with the help of Greater Manchester Police.

Bolton-based e-learning company, Near-Life, will use the Innovate UK cash to bring its products to market early next year and eventually target police forces globally.

Near-Life, which employs 12 staff at its University of Bolton base, specialise in delivering immersive technology solutions to support realistic, online learning.

The tech allows users to experience immersive, role-play style training which enhances engagement and knowledge retention at a fraction of the cost of traditional scenario-based learning.

The company, founded by husband and wife team Mike Todd and Geseth Garcia in 2015, has used its cutting-edge tech to support everyone from international aid workers to ambulance service personnel and business professionals.

The new funding will allow them to develop enhanced police training to better prepare officers for the complexity of modern policing against a backdrop of continued budget cuts.

The new project will focus on creating more complex, gamified simulation technology to support complex investigations – an area of police training identified as of greatest need.

This will be developed in close partnership with Greater Manchester Police.

The initial focus will be on designing a new pilot course in the fight against Child Sexual Exploitation.

Mike said: “With the ongoing pandemic, it’s more critical than ever that organisations are able to access immersive technology that can help deliver realistic, remote training.

“We have been working closely with GMP to develop this project that will enable officers to better test potential decision-based outcomes around complex investigations, improving problem solving and decision making in a safe learning environment.

“The technology has the ability to better track performance and learning based outcomes, supporting an improved knowledge base and sharing of best practice.”

With Innovate-UK support, the development will be accelerated with product launch aimed for 2021, two years ahead of target.

This will enable Near-Life to offer its software to police forces across the UK as well as those overseas.

The tech can also be rolled out to other areas such as the fire service and the insurance sector: wherever complex investigative scenarios can benefit learning.

Co-founder Geseth added: “Following on from our successful fundraise last year, this is a positive time for the company and it’s an exciting sector to be in.

“We’re pleased to get the funding which will allow us to scale at a rapid pace and proceed with our ambitions to become a lead provider in interactive immersive learning.”

Superintendent Gareth Parkin from Greater Manchester Police said: “Within GMP, we have a commitment to constantly improving our learning and are always looking to explore the potential of innovative solutions that can help keep our communities safe.

“The funding from Innovate UK will enable us to work with Near-Life on this pilot project as we look to different ways of how digital simulations can support our work in tackling Child Sexual Exploitation (CSE).”

4th Utility and ITS agree eight-year partnership worth up to £15m

Internet providers reveal ambitious plans to deliver ultrafast broadband to half a million UK homes before 2024

A pair of North West based internet providers have joined forces in a deal worth up to £15m as they bid to take on the UK’s broadband market and bring ultrafast connectivity to 500,000 businesses and homes.

Greater Manchester-based 4th Utility and Cheshire-based ITS Technology Group have this week rubber-stamped a new eight-year partnership that paves the way for the duo to accelerate the rollout of commercial grade fibre broadband.

With 4th Utility investing £15m into the project, the two companies plan to provide 100,000 homes with ultrafast connectivity in the next 12 months, rising to half a million within three years.

4th Utility, which recently received a long-term £25m investment from DIF Capital Partners, work with residential landlords, property developers and house builders to install and upgrade their properties with full fibre connectivity.

Meanwhile ITS design, build and operate gigabit capable full fibre digital networks, often re-using existing infrastructure which drastically speeds up installations, most taking just a few weeks.

Through its ‘Faster Britain’ full fibre network, ITS and 4th Utility will help meet the soaring demand for fast internet connections of gigabit capable connectivity.

As the Government promises 100% Gigabit capability by 2025 and with its announcement of Project Speed, the two companies expect to play a key role by rolling out the Faster Britain network across the UK.

4th Utility CEO, Tony Hughes, said, “This deal brings together two exciting UK broadband providers and by leveraging the ITS network, we will be able to significantly broaden our reach and the pace of our UK-wide rollout.

“We believe in investing in high-quality fibre infrastructure and we offer a reliable solution that means super-fast full fibre broadband can be ready to go from day one. That’s become more important than ever with so many people across the country now working from home for the foreseeable future.

“We’ll be rolling out thousands of new and retro fit installations in the coming months and we’re pleased to have agreed this long-term partnership that will allow us to deliver our ambitious plans for growth. We’re excited for the future, but we’re only just getting started.”

In September, 4th Utility revealed a huge recruitment drive that will see as many as 60 new roles created in Greater Manchester to support its UK expansion, with recruitment giant Morson Group providing HR support.

On the strategic partnership and plans for the coming years, ITS CEO, Daren Baythorpe, said: “We’re really excited to be working with 4th Utility. Our Faster Britain network has been lighting up whole regions of the UK with ultrafast full fibre and this partnership enables us to build more network to more places. The plans we’ve drawn up together are going to improve the digital lives of the homes and businesses we connect.”

The partnership between ITS and 4th Utility goes some way to supporting the broadband pledge which formed a major part of the Government’s election manifesto at the end of 2019. Earlier this year, Chancellor Rishi Sunak confirmed the government would invest £5bn into its plan to roll out full-fibre broadband across the UK.
