Alliance Manchester Business School partners with Webhelp to boost tech offering

Alliance Manchester Business School (AMBS) has embarked on a strategic partnership with Webhelp, a leading global customer experience and business solutions provider, to pursue collaborative research projects and create new recruitment pathways for students.

Webhelp enriches customer experience and designs business solutions that create value for the world’s most exciting companies; for instance, they run customer service for a number of UK retailers, and technical support for one of the world’s leading tech firms. They partner across a range of services, from customer experience solutions and social media moderation to payment services. The business also provides management consultancy through Gobeyond Partners, part of the Webhelp Group, which works with clients to solve their complex customer journey challenges.

The collaboration will support Webhelp on the next stage of its growth journey by providing access to world-class research and academic expertise, an enhanced people development programme, and recruitment opportunities. Gobeyond Partners will drive research programmes and collaborative analytics programmes in partnership with key clients and AMBS.

For AMBS, the new partnership will see senior executives from Webhelp guest lecture at AMBS and provide industry insight into potential new programmes. The two organisations will also collaborate on joint research with a specific focus on AI, automation, analytics, robotics, DevOps, and API development. Webhelp will provide University of Manchester students, graduates and alumni career opportunities through its global career service portal.

Professor Fiona Devine, Head of Alliance Manchester Business School, said: “As a business school, we are keen to support high-growth businesses and our focus on digital futures, innovation, organisational excellence, and supporting the development of people aligns with that of Webhelp. We want to build long-term, mutually beneficial relationships with key players in the industry. So when Webhelp came to us, it was clear that they were trying to achieve something that played to our strengths.

“We are proud that our research-focused approach is enabling us to develop relationships that not only benefit the school and the education we provide to students, but one that has a longer-term impact by creating job opportunities for graduates at all levels, as well as our alumni.”

David Turner, Webhelp UK CEO, added: “Forging a partnership with an establishment like Alliance Manchester Business School will positively shape the future of our business. Alliance MBS has an outstanding reputation, but the most important thing for our people-first business was making sure our organisations were culturally the right fit to work together.

“The relationship will drive new opportunities for our people and our clients, as well as recruitment opportunities for promising graduates. We’re looking forward to fostering a genuine cooperation through which we can mutually learn and inspire each other.”

Innovation is at the heart of the Health and Fitness Industry

COVID-19 has highlighted the healthier we are, the better our chance of fighting off infectious diseases. Although many companies have struggled during the pandemic, there has been notable growth in public awareness and demand for wellness, nutrition and fitness products and services. Whether it be a home workout program or a focus on healthy food, the industry has been under the spotlight since lockdown restrictions were introduced.

The human nutrition market is growing at a rate of 6.6% every year. Personalised nutrition through apps, testing kits, and programs is growing even faster at a rate of 15%, leading to an expected total market value of $465.4 billion by 2025. With so many nutrition trends hitting the market, you might ask where R&D fits in?

The recipe for reward

Recipe adaptations which have been researched and developed make businesses eligible for R&D tax claims. Hiring staff to implement changes to a product or recipe could also make you eligible for financial rewards. If you are making advancements in the field of weight-loss, including developing supplements, amino acids, probiotics, gluten-free and vegan alternatives, dietary fibre, natural sweeteners, vitamins and herbal extracts then your innovations could also qualify.

There are many ways businesses in the Health & Fitness Industry could be rewarded. Outside of recipe development, working with CRMs or online programming to allow for accessible, innovative, online diet plans would also enable you to make an R&D tax claim. Or you could try delta 9.

Alternatively, if you are an SME concentrating on food preparation or looking at ways to enhance food trucks and deliveries, perhaps developing new software so customers can track your live location or a website that publishes your exceptional menus, then such innovation could make your business eligible for grants and tax credits.

In an article released in Business Matters Magazine, the story and success of Marina Wegorek came to light. The banker turned ‘mumpreneur’ was appalled by the sugar-filled snack options for children, both on the market and at children’s sporting events.Marina founded ProYouth Nutrition and developed a completely natural snack alternative for pre- and post-energy replenishment. Marina Wegorek has now been shortlisted for the Great British Entrepreneur Awards 2020 in the food and drink category. Talking about the shortlist, Marina said: “I’m absolutely over the moon to be shortlisted for this year’s food and drink entrepreneur award!”

For Marina’s innovation she could claim back R&D costs for:

  • Materials used
  • Staff costs (salaries, employer pension & NIC, reimbursed expenses)
  • Software used
  • Lighting, heating and water costs
  • Clinical trials and testing of the product
  • Subcontractors and freelancers

With the money claimed back from R&D, Marina would be able to:

  • Develop a new software for her brand
  • Move online and find new ways to interact with clientele
  • Create more innovative formulas or recipes
  • Improve her processes to become more efficient
  • Extend the brand to clothing or equipment and look at new material and product development

The cycle of success

Wellness, nutrition and fitness accounts for approximately 5.3% of global economic output with healthy eating, nutrition and weight loss holding a market value of $702.1 billion. It’s an exciting and lucrative time to be working in the Health and Fitness Industry.

Research and Development tax relief has been designed to incentivise innovation within the industry. Your innovation is rewarded – the reward fuels your next innovation – and the cycle continues.

Taylor Wimpey unveils the dynamic duo at new Ashton-under-Lyne development

0

One of Taylor Wimpey Manchester’s newest developments, Harts Mead in Ashton-under-Lyne, has unveiled its new team.

With over 13-years’ experience, potential homeowners will be greeted by sales executive, Deborah Michaels, who will be on hand to answer questions about the new homes and financial schemes available.

She is joined by site manager, Andrew Gore, who has responsibility for overseeing all site activity, including checking quality, encouraging and supporting the workforce, health and safety management and ordering materials.

Making people’s dreams come true is one of the things sales executive, Deborah, enjoys the most: “I love it when I can help people find their perfect house. Getting to meet and speak to people from different backgrounds and helping them choose, purchase and, where possible personalise their new home is just fantastic.

“Taking them from seeing their home on a plan to handing over the keys is a great accomplishment and makes me proud of my work. Only recently I helped an older lady who was moving from Wales to be closer to her son.”

Taylor Wimpey is enforcing strict COVID-secure procedures and offering pre-booked virtual appointments.

Deborah continued: “We are operating remote appointments at the moment, however customers can be rest assured that we now have lots of assets and tools accessible to us to allow them to make an informed decision about buying their new home, without needing to visit the scheme in person.”

Once complete, Harts Mead will include a mix of high-quality one-bedroom apartments, as well as both semi-detached and detached two-, three- and four-bedroom homes.

The development will also benefit from a play area, kick-a-bout space, open space, and enhancement to the existing right of way to accommodate pedestrians/cyclists which will connect to surrounding green spaces and nature walks.

It also provides a fantastic outlook towards Hartshead Pike, Pennine Way and the fairways of Ashton Golf Course.

Entrepreneur behind popular business expos backs FreelanceHER100 as mentor

When the UK went into lockdown in March last year, Nichola Howard, founder of Launch Events NW, lost 60 per cent of her business overnight.

With events postponed, Nichola had to refocus the business, which had predominantly relied on revenues from three major events including the Blackpool Business Expo, Business Expo Wigan and Business Expo Leigh.

The events, which have been running annually since 2013, attracted more than 150 businesses at any one time and 2020 was going to be their biggest year yet – that’s until the pandemic hit.

“We were on target for our fastest rate of growth last year,” said Nichola, who is also vice chair of the Wigan Chamber of Commerce.

“We had sold all the sponsorships; we had the best start to 2020 that we could have hoped for and then the pandemic hit and overnight we lost most of our business as events were cancelled.

“It was devastating at the time and I thought we had lost everything. We did manage to get the grants which kept the bills paid but we knew we had to do something to survive.”

Nichola, who operates the business with sister and marketing director Jo Leigh, changed the direction of the business to focus on the digital marketing offering, which they previously provided as an added service.

The digital offering includes everything from digital marketing strategy and social media management to content creation for small businesses.

The sisters are currently preparing for a new website launch to kick-start the new direction in 2021.

Nichola said: “We have always offered marketing as a service as we genuinely want to help small businesses get seen and heard however It wasn’t our main focus and not something we marketed.

“The expos took a lot of time and planning which left little time to focus on anything else.

“But the pandemic has allowed us to sit down and take a good look at the business and what we want to achieve, and we decided this new direction was where we want to be.

“We’ve already picked up new clients and we will continue with the events which we will streamline.”

Nichola will be sharing her experiences after signing up as a mentor for FreelanceHER100.

The three-month accelerator has been launched by IN4.0 with The Landing and will aim to kick-start the entrepreneurial careers of 100 women across the North West.

The fully funded programme will focus on women for whom COVID has resulted in a career break, freelancers who want to grow their business, mothers seeking to return to work as well as applicants from the BAME community.

Women from across the region have the opportunity to take part in the scheme, which will be delivered online in weekly sessions.

Said Nichola: “I can’t wait for this to start as this is something that is different, it’s not being done anywhere else and importantly it’s going to add real value to women in Greater Manchester.

“I want to show women this is what we’ve done, we thought we were going to lose the business, but we’ve come back with a bang and this is what we’ve learnt, and I want to help other women to do the same. If it has worked for us it can work for you too.

“If you’re a freelancer then sign up to this programme and get the best advice and support from women who have done it all before.”

Programme director Naomi Timperley said: “I’m looking forward to Nichola sharing her experiences as a freelancer on the programme.

“FreelanceHER100 is offering women a unique opportunity to launch their careers during these challenging times with the help and support of some amazing women from across the region.”

BAM appointed to create £68 million new hospital in Salford

0

Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust, part of the Northern Care Alliance NHS Group, has appointed BAM Construction to build a new hospital to support its role as the major trauma centre for Greater Manchester.

Salford-based BAM’s appointment to the £68million major capital project follows a competitive process under the Procure22 Health Framework. Planning permission for the six-storey James Potter Building (previously referred to as the Acute Receiving Centre) was granted in December 2019. The new hospital build on the Salford Royal site is also part of the Government’s Health Infrastructure Plan, the biggest hospital building programme in a generation which will deliver 48 hospitals across the country by 2030.

The development is named in honour of the organisation’s recently retired long-standing chairman Jim Potter and will provide the Trust with major trauma and high acuity surgery facilities in a modern, high quality building.

Once complete, the specialist facility is set to receive 90% of all major trauma patients in Greater Manchester, for example, people who have been involved in a serious road traffic accident or serious fall. It will also be the hub site for high risk general surgery across Bolton, Salford and Wigan. This means that any patients from these areas who require high risk emergency surgical or non-surgical treatment will be brought to Salford for their care.

BAM is now on Salford Royal’s site carrying out enabling works with a full construction programme start confirmed for 22 February. Day Architectural has worked on the design with BAM and the Trust. The scheme aims to complete in summer 2023.
NCA Chief Executive Raj Jain said: “This important facility has been many years in the planning with a number of our local, regional and national partners and it’s great to now be just weeks away from the official start date of construction. We are proud to be the major trauma centre for Greater Manchester and this centre and the amazing state of the art facilities and our specialist clinical teams within it will allow us to provide trauma care and services to an additional 400 trauma patients per year and help save more lives.

“Our partnership with Bolton NHS Foundation Trust and Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust will see us use this facility as the home for a new single-service for high risk emergency general surgery. This new team will strive to provide a general surgery service with the best outcomes in the UK for its patients.”

Rob Bailey, BAM’s Healthcare Construction Manager said: “We have worked extensively on the design and programme with the Trust to understand fully what their requirements are, and focus completely on what matters to them – providing a high quality building in which their patients are cared for and their staff can provide that care. That is how buildings should be delivered, with the outcomes the client wants placed at the centre.

“We have an integrated capability to deliver facilities, because apart from constructing buildings, we also design them, develop them and manage facilities inside them. This insight and understanding of the built environment empowers our use of digital tools and construction techniques, and it enhances the sustainability and energy efficiency we can bring to make buildings better to use and more efficient to run.”

The 9800m2, six-storey centre is set to include a resuscitation area, five emergency theatres, inpatient beds, and diagnostic imaging, and a helipad.

Cliff Jones Head of Construction Procurement, NHS Estates and Facilities said: “We are delighted this innovative, six-storey, state-of-the art development to provide improved outcomes for patients across Greater Manchester will be delivered via the ProCure22 Framework (P22). A key benefit of the ProCure22 Framework is early engagement between client and contractor who work in collaboration over the life cycle of a project to realise the stakeholder requirements and aspirations. We look forward to the successful delivery of this unique and dynamic facility and the resulting improvements in healthcare delivery for the community that it will serve.”

Ian Fleming, North West Regional Director for BAM, said the company has adapted its construction operations to ensure the safety of its workforce from the pandemic, and welcomed the new centre.

He said: “These facilities are right on our doorstep so we know very personally just how important they are. There has never been a more important time to help the NHS deliver the facilities it needs to keep people well and to be able to live their lives at a difficult time for us as a country. I’m very proud of our partnership with Salford Royal and the trust they have placed in us.”

BAM’s recent track record in healthcare includes two new Nightingale Hospitals showing the company’s capability of using modular solutions and working in accelerated ways. It is working on several major hospital schemes around the UK, having adapted many schemes to provide additional support to the NHS in fighting the Covid19 pandemic. In Salford and Manchester BAM has delivered scores of buildings for every major client in the public and private sectors, including its most iconic buildings.

5 Tips For Finding the Right Business Mentor To Help You Flourish

A business mentor can be an invaluable asset when it comes to nurturing and growing your company.  With it comes years of experience and a sounding board to help guide you towards your goals while steering you away from the all too typical mistakes that plague all businesses getting off the ground.

We’re going to discuss how to find a mentor that best matches your direction and in the long run will help your business flourish.

Identify Your Needs

The first step to finding the right mentor is to be prepared for the process.  Start by asking yourself the following questions:

  • How receptive are you to new ideas?
  • How clear is your vision of where you want your company to go?
  • How well do you take criticism?
  • How much time are you willing to invest to building a relationship?

If the answer to these questions is overwhelmingly positive, then ask yourself what sort of expertise you’re looking for?

For example, if you’re looking to expand your product overseas and into a new market, you should seek out a mentor who has handled international trade, navigated international IP laws, worked with distributors overseas and customs, and marketing in a foreign country.  A mentor provides a much needed assist in these areas and help you avoid costly mistakes in the long run.

Start the Search

You’re going to want to first try your network of friends and businesses for mentorship.  You can also one step out and try the network of your network.

You can also search online on the many mentoring websites, YouTube channels and blogs for free advice and resources. Research and compile your list of organizations and people that resonate with you. Split that into who can offer free and paid mentoring services.

Be confident when reaching out to business people for advice.  It’s always best to concise and explain your reason for reaching out.  They’re busy people, treat them like their time matters (it does and so does yours).

Set Your Goals

It’s best to meet your mentor in an informal setting first if they are local. There’s nothing like a face-to-face meeting to get a sense of who this person is and visa versa.  You get a better sense of who they are being in the same room.  True of any human interaction. If you have no other choice, video chat on Skype/Facetime is the next best thing.

Your first meetings needs to establish your goals. It would be wise to express clarity on what you expect from the mentoring process. Be respectful, courteous and responsive with the feedback.  You may not like what you hear, but take it in stride and thank the person for sitting with you.

Use the initial meeting to decide whether advice should be verbal or written, how often you should meet, and what targets should be set. You may also find it helpful to set time limits on your professional relationship.

Honesty Is The Best Policy

For you to get the best out of the mentoring process, you need to be honest to yourself and about your business. Think of it like a relationship — you need to be open with yourself and about your intentions.

With your mentor, examine the challenges you face and how you intend to overcome them. Be candid about your strengths and weaknesses. Remain open to suggestions.

If you have a tendency to get obsessed by detail, a mentor can help you step back and see the bigger picture.  If you are more a big picture person, a mentor can help hone in your mind’s eye towards the minutiae of your business.

Avoid the Neediness

Much like a relationship, you need to stick to the ground rules set up in the first few meetings. Your mentor is there to help, not do your job for you with every challenge or crisis you face. Never turn up to a meeting / coaching session without discussion points, questions, and possible solutions on your mind.

Successful mentoring is like all relationships — it’s a two-way street. You have to be considerate of your mentor’s own timetable and ready to help them in any way you can too.

The take away from your mentorship is to expand your business knowledge.  You’re going to find someone who can nudge you in the right direction yet tell you when you’re in the wrong.  Business isn’t about emotion, it’s about facts. Listen to your mentor’s point of view, be open to receiving the information, accept it or discard it, and keep yourself open to changing your mind.

Awaze to create 75 new jobs at Manchester base

0

European travel giant Awaze has announced plans for 75 new jobs at its Manchester base to support its vision of a thriving commercial and technology hub in the city.

The continent’s leading managed vacation rentals and holiday resorts business has already recruited 25 new team members since starting operations at Dalton Place in October, but new roles in technology, revenue management, marketing, commercial and legal will see its city workforce swell to at least 100 by the end of next year.

John Crosby, Group Chief Operating Officer for Awaze, says the company behind some of Europe’s most trusted travel brands, including Hoseasons, cottages.com, Landal GreenParks and Novasol, is looking to attract top talent from across the city to bolster its existing team, accelerate the company’s digital transformation and ensure it remains at the forefront of the self-catering sector.

“Our aim is to build a state-of-the-art common web platform to house all our brands and provide the best possible experience for our customers and property owners alike. That requires the sharpest brains in the business at all levels and is exactly why we decided to set up in Manchester in the first place.

“There’s a fantastic tech community in the city already and we’re excited to be doing our bit to grow and add to it by creating these roles and recruiting from the local area.”

Working closely with colleagues in Copenhagen, new recruits will become part of an international team dedicated to developing and honing products and services that delight holidaymakers and drive revenue for property owners across the UK and beyond.

Crosby added: “A pan-European vision like ours means there’ll be a range of complex issues to solve along the way, and that should be a very attractive proposition to the people we’re looking to recruit. We want quick-thinking problem solvers who thrive on a challenge, love being part of a team, and want to help us build game-changing travel solutions right here in the heart of Manchester.”

Tim Newns, CEO at Greater Manchester’s inward investment agency – MIDAS, said: “In what has no doubt been a challenging year, we are delighted to have worked with Awaze to establish their UK HQ in Greater Manchester. The pandemic has rapidly accelerated growth within the eCommerce and retail tech industry and with such a strong standing in this sector – as well as supporting industries and technologies including FinTech, service design and AI – Greater Manchester is the perfect location for ambitious firms.

“This is fantastic news for Greater Manchester’s economy and workforce and just goes to show the pull the city-region has when it comes to attracting brands of this size and scale, not least because of the significant digital talent base. It’s clear to see Awaze is here for the long haul and we look forward to seeing them invest, grow and prosper in Greater Manchester for many years to come.”

Awaze provides holidays to more than eight million guests a year at more than 110,000 properties in 36 countries across the world.

Earlier this month the business predicted a 2021 UK staycation boom with holidaymakers expected to once again book breaks closer to home when restrictions are lifted.

Hoseasons enjoyed its best ever sales day last June, recording a booking every 11 seconds after Boris Johnson eased restrictions and gave the go ahead for domestic travel to resume after lockdown.

Crosby added: “If there’s one thing the global pandemic has taught us, it’s that people miss travelling and will do so again as soon as it’s safe to do so. The travel sector has clearly taken a big hit in recent months, but it’s a great industry and I’m convinced those who join us on our journey can look forward to exciting times ahead.”

Access is flying high after being signed up by the RAF Benevolent Fund

0

Creative and digital experience agency Access has been recruited by the Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund to help the charity meet the growing need of people requiring support within the RAF Family. The appointment follows a four-way competitive pitch process.

Established at the end of the First World War, the RAF Benevolent Fund exists to supports those currently serving in the RAF, retired personnel and their families – around 71,000 recipients per year1.

Central to the Fund’s growth plan is to create a more effective website at https://www.rafbf.org, and Access has been tasked with designing and building a new web platform within the coming months.

The aim of the digital transformation is to deliver greater user engagement and site actions, such as applications for support, donations, event sign ups and downloads. By creating an improved user journey for both supporters and beneficiaries and a best-in-class user experience, the Fund hopes to expand its reach.

The Fund’s support spans welfare breaks, grants to help with financial difficulty, specialist advice on benefits and support with care needs and mobility equipment, as well as help for young people through its Airplay programme.

Patrick Hamilton, Operations Director at Access, says: “Access has a proven track record of creating highly effective digital experience platforms that are enabling charities to increase donations and actions taken on its site. The agency’s ongoing work with WaterAid has enabled it to not only increase mobile conversion rate by 244% and overall conversion by 63% compared to the previous website, but lower the bounce rate.

“Effective digital platforms have become vital for many charities to keep going, not only to maintain or grow donations but to engage with their audiences. The RAF Benevolent Fund helps so many people who have given their lives to our country and this is a charity we’re extremely proud to be working with.

“Our project will begin with in-depth audience research, creating personas and holding interviews, before moving on to prototyping. This will drive the wider user experience strategy, design and development.

“Central to our successful proposal was that we will ensure that the user journey is front and centre at all stages, alongside a fresh and inspiring design.

“We will be using our Drupal experience to create an experience that is both user friendly and easy to manage, to meet all of the charity’s objectives.”
