Matthew Singleton lands high profile role

Since joining Manchester firm Throgmorton Capital Management earlier this year, investment director Matthew Singleton has seen his profile boosted locally and nationally.

Singleton, who specialises in financial planning and wealth management, has started to establish a reputation as an expert media commentator, fielding enquiries from publishers including the BBC.

In February this year, Mr. Singleton was invited to publish a feature article on influential tech website techround.co.uk, where he distilled the complexities of the Gamestop ‘short squeeze’ episode, warned against cryptocurrency scams and explained how Bitcoin investing can be fraught with hidden risks.

Singleton, who was previously CIO at Manchester firm Daintree Wealth Management and before that worked on the trading desk James Brearley & Sons, isn’t new to media limelight.

In previous roles, his expertise was sought by The Guardian, The Independent and The Express, as he established himself as an expert commentator in the areas of personal finance, wealth management and financial planning.

Speaking at the time of his appointment, Throgmorton director Alasdair McWilliams said: “We are delighted to announce the appointment of Matthew Singleton as an investment director at Throgmorton.

“He brings with him a long and enviable track record as a portfolio manager and will be responsible for overseeing the development of the firm’s bespoke portfolio service.”

“Matthew’s appointment also adds further talent to the already deep bench overseeing the firm’s managed portfolio service.”

On his new role, Singleton said: “I’m delighted to join Throgmorton Capital Management and look forward to working with Alasdair and the rest of the team to further develop their service offering and the continued growth of the business.”

Manchester based award winning female Founder leads the way in troubled UK events industry

Female founded events agency, Make Events is set to make waves in the UK events industry, yet again, by putting on their own virtual event for customers, The Make Events Show on 26th March 2021.

Holly Moore, CEO and Founder will co-host the event with BBC Morning Live’s (and former Manchester resident) Gethin Jones, the afternoon will include appearances from Denise Van Outen, Dr Ranj Singh and Vernon Kay.

Holly and Gethin met in 2018 when Gethin hosted the Manchester PA Award organised by Make Events: “I’m chuffed to bits to support my good friend Holly Moore. Like so many, the events industry was hit so hard. Holly has been a leading light in not giving up, and pivoting. Excited to be involved to showcase how you can adapt your events into the new world…”

The event is set to connect audiences with their brand but also show customers just how powerful a virtual event can be.

Holly Moore comments: “there is still a misunderstanding on the capabilities of a professional virtual event, how far it can reach and what content can be created. Even blue-chip companies are settling for the mediocre Zoom experience.”

The event industry has been hit hard and with many agencies having to close their doors, Make Events has been a shining light of positivity not only in the North West but across the country.

Holly Moore, Founder and CEO said: “We want to showcase how exciting and engaging a virtual event can be. There will be high energy to show the possibilities to companies who are considering creating these experiences to their clients or teams!”

The afternoon will also include an events industry panel, a Home Edit with local designer, Kim Minchin and an interview with Paul Cheetham, author and CEO of Sedulo Group based in Manchester.

Further line up is soon to be released along with the dedicated event website.

Make Events will also be raising money for FareShare during the show, the charity brought into the spotlight in 2020 by the campaign by Manchester United footballer, Marcus Rashford.

The company announced the event via an “everything goes wrong” spoof video call from the Make Events Conference Committee. Jackie Weaver moment included! Watch the video here.

Over the last year, Make Events has seen their virtual event offering increase in demand and the company responds to their client needs with the creation of new products and services including studio and remote virtual events, a content studio offering graphic design, branded printing, video creation and photography, expanded their prop shop, created a bespoke gift box solution and re-branded its sister company, HM Events, offering private parties.

The growing agency has taken on Mark Higginson as Head of Creative, who will lead the charge on brand strategy and design, Jamie Angel as Partnerships Manager, who will be responsible for building stronger client partnerships and Emma Shaw as Studio Manager, who brings extensive creative project management experience into the mix to ensure smooth running of this vital element of the business.

The award-winning agency welcomes NICE, the health and social care organisation, financial services experts Fluent Money Group, green energy technology specialists Kiwi Power and hearing aid manufacturers Oticon to its family of clients, joining existing clients such as Arts Council England, the National Lottery Heritage Fund and the BBC.

Now in its fifth year, the creative agency has seen impressive growth over the last few years, which has led to the business expanding into a large, multi-functional studio space in the Northern Quarter. The business now boasts an enviable roster of clients and has picked up a collection of high-profile industry awards for its creative client campaigns.

Flow’s founder and Creative Director, Karl Doran, says: “We’ve had a phenomenal period of bringing in new clients and building relationships with existing ones, and I’m really excited to grow our talented team with the addition of Emma, Mark and Jamie. They bring with them a wealth of experience and skills that will help us manage this new demand and to push Flow to the next level.

“Emma has a background in filmmaking and has managed film and animation studios for many years, Mark has led creative teams and has 15 years of experience creating brands, and Jamie has an excellent track record in relationship building and understanding client’s needs.

“We started as a motion design studio so are used to creating compelling and beautiful animation, with the brand experience we now have in-house we’re able to provide a more holistic service to our clients. Emma Shaw commented: “I’d watched Flow develop as a company from the start and was always really impressed by their fearless creativity. Working with them now, I have also learned that they are an awesome team of people with integrity and a desire to use their powers for good.”

Mark Higginson added: “The ambition and direction Karl highlighted for Flow is what really stood out to me when first sitting down to discuss things. We both agreed that the role of an agency in these times has evolved and is needed more than ever. A beacon for our sector, with sound ethical principles, a big sense of community as well as being able to pull all facets of brand communication together in one lovingly crafted narrative.”

“It’s an agency that brings together ideas, strategic thinking and movement under one roof, and that’s built upon the power of its people and culture. It’s all pretty exciting stuff. Flow has always been one of the agencies on my radar. So now it’s fantastic to be here to help take the studio to that next level.”

Jamie Angel added: “Having seen and heard so much about the work Flow produces, I was really excited to join the team. I’ve always been impressed by Flow’s creative energy and since joining I can see why they’re the number one choice for the amazing clients they work with.”

The three hires take Flow Creative to seven full-time team members.

BGFG eyes expansion following seven figure investment

A thriving gaming and tech publishing house in Manchester has secured over £1 million in angel funding to facilitate working growth capital and support its acquisition ambitions.

Through an investment round supported by FWS Advisory Limited in late 2020, By Gamers for Gamers were able to catch the attention of a series of high-net-worth individuals who recognised the potential of its unique business model.

Bill Holroyd, who was one of the original investors of global appliance firm AO.com, is the lead investor in BGFG, closely followed by David Walter founder of Usespace.

Institutional investment came from early stage, publicly-backed GC Angels – a firm which responds to the early-stage equity market across the North with an aim to scale and coordinate Business Angel activity through enablement and increased market access.

The seven-figure investment will not only fast-track the firm’s expansion but will also support its mission to enhance Manchester’s reputation as an economic powerhouse in digital and creative industries.

Co-founder Craig Kirkcaldy said securing the funding to capitalise on the existing growth made prior personal investment worthwhile: “Securing the angel investment is a massive step forward for BGFG as we approach the second anniversary of the business.

“Our growth trajectory has been incredible since we launched and that has enabled us to recruit some of the best people in the UK gaming marketplace.

“We have some exciting and ambitious plans for how to develop the business and we have found some great investors who share our vision and see the potential in where we can take this business.”

By Gamers for Gamers was founded in April 2019 by brothers Andrew and Craig Kirkcaldy and Will Blears after the trio spotted a gap in the market.

The firm comprises a team of experienced, passionate individuals dedicated to bringing readers the best in unbiased PC tech, gaming, and Esports news.

With millions of readers each month, its continued purpose is to provide readers with unbiased hands-on reviews and practical buying advice as well as tips to get the most out of their tech and gaming setup.

The company recently relocated to a larger premise at Usespace, Manchester, and currently employs 20 people but despite reporting a £545K turnover during 2020, growth so far has been entirely self-funded.

Whilst Craig took the lead on seeking investment and preparing pitches, the investment was a joint effort between the co-founding trio who each pitched to a series of investors.

Craig added: “The process of seeking investment in the middle of a global pandemic was certainly an interesting one!

“Pitching to investors is a challenge at the best of times but the landscape is very different under the various lockdown restrictions we have seen over the last few months.

“We found a specialist broker who was able to make the right introductions, which was very important to our success, and then most of our pitches were over Zoom.

“Pitching can be nerve-wracking but it’s all about preparing well, knowing your numbers and your business plan and sticking to the script.

“You’ve probably only got 15 minutes and you have to be concise and to the point and you have to stand out. You have to understand that the investor may be listening to 15 pitches a day so yours needs to be memorable – for all the right reasons.”

The outside funding has enabled BGFG to embark on a major recruitment drive to attract talented people to Manchester and create 35 multimedia and digital content roles.

Manchester energy boss urges support for hospitality workers ahead of sector re-opening

0

The managing director of Energy PEAK, a Manchester-based business energy consultancy, has urged consumers to be supportive of hospitality workers when the sector re-opens.

Energy PEAK, who help businesses in the hospitality sector manage their energy consumption and save money on energy bills with free energy audits, commissioned a study of hospitality workers earlier this year.

The research revealed that the UK’s bar staff, chefs, waiters and other sector employees are excited about getting back to work when the sector re-opens in June, but many are nervous about busy crowds and being out of practice at their jobs.

The nationwide poll found that only a third (33%) of hospitality workers feel confident about returning to work.

Three in ten (30%) say they’re not looking forward to how busy their workplaces will be. 13% say they’re worried about being out of practice once they return. 12% say they are looking forward to getting back to work, despite feeling nervous about being out of practice.

Confidence across the sector varies by location too.

Hospitality workers in Manchester are the most excited about getting back to the day (or night) job. 57% said they were looking forward to the sector re-opening and felt confident about going back to work. Hospitality staff in Leeds (50%) and Birmingham (46%) were also feeling confident and excited.

London’s hospitality staff seem less positive. Just 25% of the capital’s hospitality staff said they felt confident and excited about returning to their hospitality jobs, while Edinburgh’s hospitality workers are the least confident of all, with fewer than one in ten (9%) saying they feel confident about getting back to work.

Energy PEAK managing director Jeff Walsh says of the findings:

Jeff Walsh, MD of Energy PEAK.

“Hospitality workers have been among the hardest hit during the pandemic. So it’s really important that customers are patient with them as they get back up to speed. Let’s not forget, many of these workers won’t have been able to put their skills to use for more than a year when they finally get back into behind the bars and into the kitchens.”

“I’m sure customers will be understanding. I personally can’t wait for the sector to reopen and will be looking forward to supporting all the fantastic local businesses that we’ve all missed while they’ve been closed.”

New premises will double turnover at Rochdale start-up

0

The boss of a fast-growing start-up predicts turnover at its Rochdale base will double to £6m following their move into new premises.

Ryan Hopley only launched Repair Maintenance & Overhaul (RMO) in 2018 but it already boasts four offices and an annual turnover of £6m, with Rochdale accounting for half.

The business is an electrical mechanical and instrumentation distributor and supplies multiple sectors including oil and gas, construction, rail, water, utilities and food production.

It grew by a third in 2020 despite the pandemic and is about to move into a 6,488 sq ft unit at Rochdale Council’s Logic development at Kingsway Business Park.

Mr Hopley said: “We’re really excited to be moving to Logic. We were literally bursting at the seams at our old site in Harriett Street. We had no room but didn’t want to leave Rochdale. We worked with Rochdale Development Agency and as soon as we saw the unit at Logic we realised that was where we wanted to be. It’s a great location next to the M62.

“We currently employ eight people in Rochdale but that will increase to 12 after the fit-out of our new unit at Logic. Rochdale accounts for half our turnover and we think that will double to £6m with the move. I’m a Milnrow lad so setting up a business in Rochdale was the natural choice.”

Mr Hopley only decided to launch his own business after a shock cancer diagnosis in 2015. He recounted: “I was working for a large corporate electrical distributor and developed a bulge in my stomach that I wrongly assumed was a hernia. I had a scan and it turned out to be kidney cancer. I’ve been given the five-year all clear and I’m living life to the full.

“Going through something like that changes the way you approach life. I’d always wanted to set up a business so after my cancer battle I decided to do it and jumped in feet first.”

Mr Hopley was 46 when he launched his first RMO site in Harriett Street, Rochdale, and followed it up with branch openings in Liverpool in 2019, Grimsby in 2020 and the acquisition of a Teeside-based business.

He explained: “The Grimsby move was a game-changer for us because it allowed us to expand into mechanical and instrumentation and that’s fuelled the growth. We’re now bringing the mechanical and instrumentation together with the electrical into Rochdale which is why we needed the bigger space at Logic.”

The managing director said he had another personal reason for moving to Logic.

“Before Logic was built my Mum used to keep horses on the same land as the new unit is on,” he said. “It feels like fate coming here. The unit is currently been fitted out but when it’s finished we’re going to put a horse shoe on the boardroom wall for good luck.

“I should have launched the business years ago but I feel as though we’re catching up for lost time.

“Rochdale is a great place to base a business because of the people and the excellent connectivity and we can’t wait for the move to Logic in week commencing March 22 when we look forward to helping customers old and new with their requirements.”

Livingbridge Investee Company Brainlabs Completes Acquisition

Livingbridge, one of the UK’s leading mid-market private equity investors, is pleased to announce that portfolio company Brainlabs has acquired User Conversion, a conversion rate optimisation agency.

Livingbridge invested in Brainlabs in 2019 to accelerate the business’ growth and support the firm in its ambition to become the global leader in digital marketing. Since then, Brainlabs has expanded its offering and footprint through two add-on acquisitions, in the form of US digital marketing agency Hanapin Marketing and SEO specialist Distilled in 2020.

User Conversion represents Brainlabs’ third acquisition. Founded in 2015 and based in Manchester, User Conversion is a leading CRO agency, crafting bespoke conversion strategies to transform the digital performance of its clients. The firm has seen rapid growth since its inception and now boasts a portfolio of blue-chip online retail clients, including Boots and BrewDog.

By incorporating User Conversion’s unparalleled CRO expertise into its offering, the deal will enable Brainlabs to cross-sell to its existing customer-base, engender interest from new clients, and expand its footprint.

Founded in 2012, Brainlabs is a data-led marketing agency, helping businesses build experimentation-led marketing through paid search, display, paid social, SEO, CRO and analytics. Headquartered in London, the firm has grown both organically and through strategic acquisition to 400 people, spanning Singapore, UK and the US.

Brainlabs has attracted widespread industry recognition for its innovative and tech-led approach, including placing first in Deloitte’s Tech Track Fast 50, fourth in the Financial Times fastest-growing companies, and winning two Masters of Marketing Agency of the Year awards.

Brainlab’s offices now span Austin, Bloomington, London, Los Angeles, Manchester, New York and Seattle.

Daniel Gilbert, CEO of Brainlabs, said: “Despite a challenging year, Brainlabs weathered the COVID-19 storm exceptionally well, and has come out on the other side stronger than ever before. We are now looking to the future and are excited about our partnership with User Conversion.

“User Conversion has the unique combination of being an independent business catering to household names, and its CRO capabilities will be invaluable in enabling us to execute on our growth objectives. We look forward to working closely with the management team to bring it into the fold.”

Dave Kirby, Livingbridge, commented: “I am thrilled to see Brainlabs invest in such a dynamic company with a proven track-record in providing best-in-class services to its clients. Since our investment in 2019, we have successfully deployed a robust value creation strategy for Brainlabs through strategic M&A, and it’s a pleasure to watch it unfold with yet another successful acquisition. We look forward to supporting further developments in Brainlab’s growth journey, both in the UK and internationally.

David Mannheim, Founder of User Conversion, added: “I am delighted to be joining forces with Brainlabs. Their market-leading products, world-class expertise, and history of successful third-party integration make them the ideal partner to take us through the next stage of our growth.”

NEW SPECIAL EXHIBITIONS GALLERY AT THE SCIENCE AND INDUSTRY MUSEUM REVEALED

0

A spectacular new 725 metre square flexible gallery is now complete and ready to originate and host some of the world’s best science exhibitions and experiences in the North, thanks to a generous £3.8 million grant from the DCMS and additional support from other funders.

Designed by award-winning architectural practice Carmody Groarke, working alongside Manchester building contractor HH Smith & Sons, the transformation of the lower ground floor of the museum’s Grade II listed New Warehouse reveals grand industrial beauty with stunning modern and sustainable design. It opens-up public access as a gallery space to this part of the much-loved museum’s globally significant site for the first time.

Director Sally MacDonald, says: “We are dedicated to inspiring audiences with ideas that change the world. This year has brought home to all of us how fundamentally science shapes our lives. As we all rebuild personally, socially and culturally, and look forward to better things in 2021, we can’t wait to share this phenomenal new exhibition space. Our new Special Exhibitions Gallery will deliver a real step change in increasing access to incredible science exhibitions and collections. It is the first project in our long-term multi-million pound restoration programme to conserve our historic buildings, open up new spaces for all to enjoy, play and learn in and to generate vital skills opportunities to support our innovators of the future. “

The New Warehouse was built in 1882 from brick, cast and wrought iron and sandstone to provide storage for the Great Western Railway and designed to support the weight of goods wagons entering the building and unloading cargo (which would have been moved through to the lower ground floor through ceiling hatches still visible today). Used as museum stores until recently, the historic fabric of the lower ground floor has been revealed and restored, allowing visitors to experience the grandeur and scale of the original warehouse space while enjoying new exhibition experiences.

The original and the modern have been combined to pave the way for a sustainable gallery of the future, setting a new design standard for the rest of the masterplan of the museum to follow in years to come.

Key features include beautifully restored Victorian industrial architecture, including thick red brick walls with blue brick detail, steel and brick “jack arch” ceilings, including a focal high section beneath the historic platform above (now the Textiles Gallery on the upper level). These historic features have been enhanced with high quality contemporary materials and design including signature illuminated fibreglass panels (hand-cast by Streamline Fibreglass in Trafford Park) in the external and front of house areas which light the space with a warm glow. In the gallery, new walls house all necessary services for the space and are a blank canvas for exhibitions.

An improved outdoor welcome area in the lower courtyard of the museum is fully accessible and provides stunning vistas under the historic Viaduct (also known as the Pineapple Line) with its monumental round cast iron and square sandstone pillars infilled with brick jack-arching. This beautiful Colonnade and area of the site will be incorporated in years to come in new connections and entrances between the Science and Industry Museum, The Factory and the developing St John’s and Castlefield neighbourhoods as this vibrant area of the city comes alive together.

This new gallery with its generous ceiling heights and apertures, dedicated object preparation and handling facilities, secure access routes and first-rate environmental controls will enable the museum to display larger collection items and set works as well as provide a better visitor experience and visitor facilities for audiences to explore science in all its forms.

The £5 million Special Exhibitions Gallery is being generously funded by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, Wellcome and Garfield Weston Foundation, with further support from the Kirby Laing Foundation and The Zochonis Charitable Trust.

Carmody Groarke’s recent projects include the critically acclaimed Windermere Jetty Museum, and a temporary museum for Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s Hill House near Glasgow. Andy Groarke, Director, Carmody Groarke, says “we were inspired by the powerful presence and character of the Victorian engineering and architecture when designing the new Special Exhibitions Gallery. By counterpointing the carefully restored historic building fabric with bold new materials, our architectural interventions reframe and repurpose the already wonderful spaces within the New Warehouse as a backdrop for exhibitions and visitor welcome.”
Culture Minister, Caroline Dinenage, says: “This new gallery opens up a wealth of opportunity for the Science and Industry Museum and demonstrates the importance of not only the heart of Manchester but the whole of the North West. This exciting space will educate and inspire visitors from their local community and beyond and I am pleased that with DCMS funding the museum has been able to complete this important expansion. I can’t wait to see what fascinating exhibitions they have in store.”

Sir Richard Leese, Leader of Manchester City Council, says: “The impact of this transformational project on our city will be immediate. The incredible new experiences that this spectacular gallery will bring will be integral to the cultural and skills recovery of our city through science, arts, technology and innovation for everyone.”

The museum remains temporarily closed and will re-open its doors when it is safe to do so in the coming weeks. The inaugural exhibition hosted in the Science and Industry Museum’s new Special Exhibition Gallery will be Top Secret: From Ciphers to Cyber Security, curated by the Science Museum Group with the help of expert advisors, GCHQ, the UK’s intelligence and cyber agency.

Visitors will uncover the remarkable world of codebreaking, ciphers and secret communications by exploring over a century’s worth of communications intelligence. From the First World War to the latest in cyber security, fascinating stories will be explored through hand-written documents, declassified files and artefacts from the Science Museum Group’s and GCHQ’s historic collections. Manchester is also home to GCHQ’s newest avowed office located in the heart of the city, Heron House in Albert Square.

STANDBY PRODUCTIONS AND PERSONA STUDIO DELIVER VIRTUAL STAND FOR YKK EUROPE

0

The regional division of fastening giant YKK Europe, appointed Manchester-based video production company Standby Productions and creative digital agency Persona Studio as content creators for its virtual stand at landmark sports trade show, ISPO Munich.

This year, YKK Europe’s ‘stand’ took on an innovative digital format to exclusively showcase its latest collection via a purpose built microsite. Buyers, media and sales professionals from across the globe were treated to a fully interactive experience, where they could view the entire collection close up and in 360-degrees. The site also enabled them to place sample requests and virtually meet with the sales team to discuss the range.

Simon Owen, managing director at Standby Productions, said: “YKK tasked us with showcasing its new ‘Four Worlds’ range with an immersive experience that merged digital and video into an online exhibition stand. The four worlds; Natulon®, Aqua, Eco-Technical and Evolutionary, came to life in the content we created to highlight the various fastening innovations and the 20 plus products within them.

“We enjoyed working with YKK on creating a full digital customer experience that pushed the boundaries and offered so much more than a video reel on a stand. ISPO Munich is a really impressive show to be part of and we’re hopeful we can continue to work on large scale digital and video stands in the future.”

Shot at Big Shed Studio in Trafford Park, a trailer for YKK’s exhibition stand was edited working from home by Standby Productions, which has been shared globally by the various branches of YKK; YKK Europe, YKK USA , YKK Poland, YKK Chile, and YKK Metal ve Plastik.

Lynn Whittingham, marketing executive at YKK, said: “We have worked with Simon in previous projects and it’s great to be able to continue our partnership as we know we’re in good hands. Both Standby Productions and Persona Studio exceeded our expectations in this project, which for YKK is such an important show. From the first brief, both their flair and personalities came over in the work that was done in such short and tight deadlines, we are immensely proud of the final project handed over to us with both companies still on hand if we need them.”

Tom Davies, co-founder of Persona Studio, said: “It was really great collaborating with Simon and the Standby Productions team to create something new and exciting for the client.

“By fusing together interactive video content into a microsite that allowed users to explore the products in new ways, it ended up being a true stand-out piece that made a huge impact at ISPO.

“With an increasing move towards virtual events and online experiences, it’s exciting to be producing content that lends itself perfectly to this new style of show. The YKK team allowed us freedom to run with our ideas, and was a pleasure to work with.”

Standby Productions’ and Persona Studio’s skills have perfectly aligned on this project and both agencies hope to collaborate again soon.

ISPO Munich, which took place from 1 to 5 February 2021, was online for the first time due to Covid-19 and is the world’s largest sports trade show held annually in Munich.
