Bruntwood and Trafford Council submit plans for Stretford’s King Street transformation

Following extensive community engagement, Bruntwood and Trafford Council are excited to announce that detailed plans for the transformation of Stretford’s King Street – the first phase of the wider Stretford Masterplan – have been submitted.

The proposals include reinstating the historic King Street as a vibrant high street, where existing businesses will be joined by new shops, cafes and bars, including independent and well known brands. A new covered market hall is also planned, which will provide a home for retailers and eateries, bar areas and outdoor seating to boost the local evening economy.

The submission of the detailed planning application for King Street follows Bruntwood and Trafford Council receiving outline planning approval for the Stretford town centre transformation masterplan in March.

With both sustainability and the high street at the heart of the masterplan, the plans centre around creating people-friendly spaces and new pedestrian routes into and around the town centre, to enhance the flow of footfall around the area.

Widespread landscaping, tree-planting and leafy seating areas will improve air-quality and boost wellbeing for residents and visitors, providing spaces for the community to come together. The plans also include significant investment to transform the existing multi-storey car park to make it light, convenient and secure, and to create a new King Street Square to provide outdoor seating areas, market stalls and spaces to host events.

Working in partnership, Bruntwood and Trafford Council have made a multi-million-pound commitment to transform Stretford town centre. There are exciting plans for up to 800 new homes, substantial new green public open space, and a new canalside neighbourhood.

Andrea George, town centre and consumer brands director at Bruntwood, said: “We’re proud to be moving forward with the ambitious plans to revitalise the King Street area, and to be one step closer to unveiling the vibrant new heart of Stretford.

“The engagement we’ve had from residents, visitors and the wider community on the vision for their future town centre has been overwhelming. A wealth of green spaces, a fresh and inspiring shopping area, and great cafes, restaurants, community facilities and play spaces were all really important features for King Street, and we’ve incorporated these into the plans.”

Cllr Andrew Western, Leader of Trafford Council, said: “Trafford Council is committed to creating successful and thriving places and having pride in all of our town centres. The King Street development certainly meets this criteria and will completely transform Stretford town centre into a modern, vibrant and exciting place to be.

“We have engaged with the community every step of the way and have taken the public’s thoughts and ideas on board concerning exactly what they want. Stretford deserves to have a first class town centre containing great shops, cafes, green spaces and community areas and, working alongside Bruntwood, that is exactly what we plan to deliver.”

The King Street proposals are one of the projects to receive funding from the Government’s £830m Future High Streets Fund (FHSF). The fund, launched by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government in December 2018, is designed to support and fund local areas’ plans to make their high streets and town centres fit for the future. Last year, Trafford Council received £17.6m funding to regenerate and transform Stretford town centre – one of only four areas of the North West to receive the full allocation. The plans have been shaped following extensive community engagement with local residents, stakeholders and businesses in September for the future of King Street.

The design team includes architects Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios in collaboration with Studio Mutt, Exterior Architecture, Avison Young and Civic Engineers.

National family law firm relocates in Altrincham

A national family law firm with nine office offices in the northwest, has relocated its Altrincham office to the professional quarter at 19 Market Street.

Stowe Family Law has taken the ground floor office suite, in this well-appointed managed office building, comprising 546 sq ft on an all-inclusive basis for 12 months.

The firm is dedicated to family law matters with a large team of specialist lawyers across a UK network of 45 offices.

Helen Miller, managing partner, Stowe Family Law, said: “Due to increasing client demand in the Altrincham area and a growing team of family lawyers, we had to relocate from our offices at Oxford Road to Market Street.

Manchester Metropolitan University To Deliver Groundbreaking AI Project For Social Media Start-up

Manchester Metropolitan University is set to deliver a revolutionary artificial intelligence (AI) project for Manchester start-up, Vulse.co, as part of the Greater Manchester AI Foundry.

Vulse.co, a web application created by global agency Social Republic, helps small businesses create engaging LinkedIn content using innovative technologies.

Teams from the Department of Computing and Maths will work alongside Vulse.co, to implement AI features that will suggest content ideas to users, reducing post creation from two hours to under three minutes.

The Greater Manchester AI Foundry, led by Manchester Metropolitan University, is a £6m project that brings together expertise in AI shared with Greater Manchester businesses in a bid to help them develop new products and services.

Dave Webb, Technical R&D Analyst at Manchester Metropolitan University commented:

“We are proud to be supporting Vulse.co on their journey and look forward to implementing groundbreaking innovation offered by the Greater Manchester AI foundry.

The AI features created by our analysts and sector specialists will be world-first in terms of the unique scoring system, and represent a game-changing opportunity for small businesses.”

Vulse.co founder, Rob Illidge, added:

“Joining the AI foundry enables us to work with AI specialists at Manchester Metropolitan University and support growing businesses looking to create engaging social media content.

The project hopes to help local businesses build back better following the disruption caused by the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Pioneering graphene partnership sets the standard

The ongoing collaboration between The University of Manchester’s graphene scientists and Northern England-based outdoor sports brand inov-8 has been awarded as an ‘outstanding’ example of innovation and wealth creation in the UK by Innovate UK.

The partnership, which has seen the launch of and subsequent development of the high-performance graphene-enhanced footwear, is now in the spotlight for its success in taking fundamental research to a successful global hit product.

Officially launched in 2018, the collaborative partners announced that they had been able to develop a graphene-enhanced rubber through a research project which began behind the scenes in 2016.

They developed G-GRIP rubber outsoles for running, hiking and fitness shoes that in testing outlasted 1,000 miles, are scientifically proven to be 50% harder wearing, and deliver the world’s toughest grip.

Subsequently, graphene was infused into the midsole foam as well, to provide superior and long-lasting energy return that supercharges feet. The G-FLY foam midsole was launched in 2021.

Aravind Vijayaraghavan, Professor of Nanomaterials at The University of Manchester, said: “This partnership is an excellent example of how a university research group and a SME can collaborate closely to take cutting edge technology from lab to market at a rapid pace. It demonstrates the significant benefits that graphene can bring to everyday products and impact our daily lives.”

Now Innovate UK has honoured the recently completed Knowledge Transfer Partnership between the two organisations with the highest possible grade of ‘Outstanding’. The project has set the bar high, resulting in not only a world-leading product range, but also a highly effective partnership that is boosting the University’s commercial reputation – and that of a fellow northern brand.

inov-8 founder Wayne Edy said: “This powerhouse forged in Northern England has taken the world of sports footwear by storm. We’re combining science and innovation together with entrepreneurial speed and achieving incredible things.”

Graphene is the lauded atomically thin material, first isolated from graphite by Manchester scientists, leading to the award of the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2010. At just one atom thick it is lightweight yet incredibly strong, meaning it has many unique properties. inov-8 was the first brand in the world to use the material in sports footwear, and both G-GRIP and G-FLY are patent-pending technologies.

That footwear has since gone on to win multiple awards. The TRAILFLY G 270 and TRAILFLY ULTRA G 300 MAX were both named ‘Trail Running Shoe of the Year’ in the Runner’s World UK Gear Awards for 2020 and 2021 respectively. Graphene-enhanced shoes have also been worn by athletes to set records, especially over ultramarathons distances. Damian Hall wore them to set a new fastest time for the 185-mile Wainwright’s Coast to Coast trail in 39 hours and 18 minutes, as did Jasmin Paris to famously win the 268-mile Spine Race outright and set a new record time that still stands.

The ongoing research and innovation has now also seen the KTP Associate, Dr Nadiim Domun, hired by inov-8 as a Senior Materials Engineer to retain his expertise and to continue the graphene technology development through close collaboration with The University of Manchester.

Graphene has the potential to change lives in so many ways. Athletic equipment is just one current success story for the versatile material. Water filtration, aviation and consumer electronics are among the many applications that are exciting scientists, product developers and the public the world over.

2021 saw Manchester placed at the top of the table for the UK’s Knowledge Transfer Partnerships and become partner of choice for innovation in businesses.

BGN wins new briefs with IMS and Growth Kitchen

Following two competitive pitches, BGN – the Manchester-based brand-led design and digital agency – has been appointed by IMS and Growth Kitchen.

For Growth Kitchen, BGN has been appointed to implement a full brand strategy, messaging and visual identity review which will then lead onto a new website design and build. Growth Kitchen currently operates a network of kitchen hubs in London for forward-thinking restaurants that want to prioritise their delivery network into strategic locations which complement their existing bricks and mortar business. It does this by providing premium delivery kitchens and technology to help top food brands confidently scale and effectively operate across high-volume delivery locations.

The business, founded by Tom Gatz and Máté Kun in January 2021, which has backing from Ronny Shibley, co-founder of on-demand grocery delivery company Gorillas, is gearing up for its Series A funding round and plans to open 40 kitchens by the end of 2023.

Oldham law firm Pearson Solicitors and Financial Advisers have collected an amazing £18,603.44 for Maggie’s Cancer Care, Oldham, over their 2 year charity of the year support.

A variety of events, including sponsored walks, dress down Fridays, cash instead of coffees during lockdown and a fair few wet days spent power-washing, gardening and greenhouse cleaning have been highlights of the charity year.

In fact due to the lockdown it actually ended up as 2 years of support, but as Suzanne Wright, Public Relations Manager of Pearson‘s said it has been all worth it.

“It has been an amazing way to really get to know the charity and the wonderful work done by Maggie’s, they are totally charity funded and now post pandemic need support more than ever.

“People come through their doors often feeling helpless and hopeless, but a comforting cuppa and some great expert advice and assistance can often turn things around for them. Maggie’s not only gives people a mechanism to cope, it gives hope and help when it’s needed the most,” said Suzanne.
As well as the fundraising events staff also helped out on awareness days and the employment team hosted a seminar to instruct business leaders on how to sympathetically support staff who had cancer or whose family members had been diagnosed.

Whilst the firm have ended the charity support they are still involved in helping visitors to Maggie’s make their Wills and Lasting Powers of Attorney and are helping to plan some of the fundraising activities at the centre.

Trish Morgan, Centre Head at Maggie’s Oldham said: “It’s been a delight to work with Pearson’s for the last 2 years as their chosen charity. We can’t thank them enough for everything they have done for us.

“The team have been absolutely brilliant, from throwing themselves into their fundraising challenges to getting stuck in during volunteering days here at the centre.

“The total they’ve raised is just wonderful and will go such a long way to helping us to be here to support people with cancer and their loved ones when they need us most.”

HURST JOINS UN NETWORK TO ACCELERATE ESG STRATEGY

Accountancy firm HURST has joined a global network of businesses as it accelerates its environmental, social and governance strategy.

HURST is the first independent accountancy firm in the UK to become part of the UN Global Compact network.

Launched in 2000, the network has become the world’s largest corporate sustainability initiative, with more than 14,000 member companies in over 160 countries. Just under 800 UK businesses are members.

The network is a platform for the development, implementation and sharing of responsible business practices aligned to 10 universally-accepted principles in the areas of human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption, with the aim of contributing to a more stable and inclusive global market and helping to build prosperous and thriving societies where business can succeed.
Members also pledge to take action in support of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

The 17 goals include eradicating poverty and hunger, and promoting good health, wellbeing, education, affordable and clean energy, gender equality and responsible consumption and production.

Northcoders TechEd announces latest new partnership deals

Manchester, Leeds and Newcastle-based Northcoders TechEd, which is part of Northcoders PLC – one of the UK’s leading independent providers of training programmes for software coding – has confirmed two partnerships that will see it deliver its ReSkill Apprenticeships course to two of the country’s most well-known businesses. It’s also expanding its work with BJSS to offer 10 SMEs and start-ups in the UK the chance to enrol one of their employees onto a course that will improve their digital skills and lead to a Level 4 qualification in Software Development at no cost to the firm or the individual.

For the UK’s leading beach holiday retailer, On the Beach, and Moonpig – the personalised greeting cards and gifts retailer, Northcoders TechEd will be delivering its ReSkill programme. Existing employees of both companies will take the highly respected course which is aimed at those with little or no prior coding experience and will turn anyone with the right aptitude into a fully trained, project-ready developer.
