Erroneous ULEZ Fines: Hundreds of Innocent Drivers Caught in Number Plate Blunder, Claim Car Experts

London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) has inadvertently ensnared hundreds of drivers with wrongful charges and fines due to a number plate mix-up, according to automotive experts.

In recent months, VRM Swansea’s Plates4Less team has been inundated with inquiries from drivers who received unjust ULEZ charges. The team has been diligently assisting these individuals in challenging and overturning fines that they should have never incurred.

The ULEZ, which has recently expanded across greater London, encircled by the M25 motorway, imposes emissions-based charges on non-compliant vehicles. Originally announced in 2015, it came into effect in September 2020.

In June alone, approximately 4,000 ULEZ fines were issued daily. Plates4Less experts assert that a significant portion of these fines were unjust. They argue that Transport for London (TfL) fails to promptly update its vehicle database from DVLA records, which accurately link number plates to the correct vehicle details.

According to the experts, if TfL updated its records daily, they would recognise that these vehicles are ULEZ compliant. However, because this isn’t happening, the information from Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras is linked to their basic non-DVLA database.

This basic database relies on the age indicator on the number plate to determine a vehicle’s age. If a vehicle carries an older personalised number plate than the vehicle itself, it may appear older to the cameras, leading to an incorrect charge.

To help drivers avoid such unwarranted fines, the number plate and motoring experts at VRM Swansea’s Plates4Less have created a helpful guide. This template can be used to contest charges or fines erroneously issued by TfL or any other relevant authority.

Antony Clark of Plates4Less explained, “As a trusted supplier of private number plates, people often come to us with their questions, and we’re happy to help. We have found that Transport for London is not updating their vehicles database from DVLA records often enough”.

“We contacted TFL on behalf of our clients and were pleased to discover that there’s a super easy fix to this issue. As long as people send Transport for London a copy of their V5 Registration Certificate when they get a charge, TfL should be able to investigate and cancel the charges and any subsequent fine.”
Antony assured: “We’ve included an email template for challenging inaccurate charges in our free guide, alongside other useful information about ULEZ and Clean Air zones.”

The guide is accessible online at www.plates4less.co.uk/ulez. This guide is the latest addition to Plates4Less’ collection of resources, designed to assist individuals interested in private plates or motorists in general.

London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone has been a subject of controversy, with even residents within the zone not being exempt from associated costs. While the best way to avoid charges or fines is to drive a ULEZ-compliant vehicle, this is not always feasible due to cost and complex regulations, leading to common grievances about the zone.

Antony added,“The issue remains that the system isn’t perfect and the database updates slowly, which is why some motorists who are driving compliant vehicles are receiving charges and fines that they shouldn’t be. This solution proposed by Plates4Less should allow Transport for London to update their files, solving the problem.

“At Plates4Less, we’ve seen the many ways that a new number plate can benefit drivers, and ULEZ shouldn’t get in the way of that. We hope our guide will help motorists understand how to navigate ULEZ, and avoid unnecessary fines.”

VRM Swansea – Plates4Less is a well-established agency for buyers and sellers of private number plates in the UK. With over 65 million registrations on its books, it boasts the most technically advanced smart search engine to help clients find the perfect plate. Operating since 1997, the company has garnered more 5-star reviews on Trustpilot than any other agency in its field of expertise.

Despite its name, Plates4Less holds the UK record for negotiating the sale of the most expensive private number plate to date in the United Kingdom, exceeding £600,000 in 2022.

Navigating the Challenge of Dealing with Bailiffs: How to Secure a Repayment Plan

0

When the specter of bailiffs looms over you, the prospect of negotiating an affordable repayment plan might be your lifeline to prevent them from knocking on your door. This guide outlines the reasons why negotiating such a plan is crucial, the steps to take, and what to do if your offer is refused.

Why Negotiate a Repayment Plan?

Regardless of whether you’ve received a Notice of Enforcement or are already grappling with the presence of bailiffs in your home, initiating a repayment plan can be your ticket to avoiding further fees and potentially warding off a visit altogether. It also demonstrates your commitment to addressing your debts, which can strengthen your position with both the bailiffs and your creditors.

If You Can Pay Your Debt in Full…

If you find yourself in a position to clear your debt entirely, consider this option. It enables you to settle your debt before the bailiffs arrive, sidestepping additional charges and the need for a repayment plan.

If You Can Pay Part of Your Debt…

If you have some available funds but can’t cover the entire debt, reach out to the bailiffs directly. Surprisingly, they may accept a reduced payment as it expedites debt resolution, even if it falls short of the full amount. Ensure you make the payment using a traceable method, such as a card or cheque, and request a receipt for your records.

If You Can Pay in Instalments…

Even if paying the entire or partial debt is unfeasible, consider proposing a series of smaller payments over time, especially if you have a regular income. While bailiffs aren’t obligated to accept such arrangements, they may be receptive if the proposal is realistic and fits within your budget.

How to Negotiate a Repayment Plan

Before initiating negotiations with the bailiffs, prepare a budget sheet. This document should detail your monthly income and expenses, revealing your disposable income. Share this sheet with the bailiffs, accompanied by a brief letter explaining your inability to pay the debt in full but your willingness to make regular payments, either monthly or weekly.

Consider sending a copy of this communication to your creditor as well. They’re the ones who instructed the bailiffs initially and may be more inclined to accept your offer. Locate their contact information online or through Companies House, and if posting, use recorded delivery or obtain proof of postage.

If the bailiffs or creditor agree to your repayment plan, request a written agreement, signed by both parties, for confirmation.

What to Do if Your Offer Is Refused

Regardless of the response to your repayment plan proposal, continue making payments to your creditor if possible. Even modest payments demonstrate your commitment to addressing your debt.

If bailiffs decline negotiation, try reaching out to your creditor directly, as they may be more flexible. Alternatively, if your debt is with the County or High Court, you can apply to the court for assistance.

If navigating negotiations proves challenging, consider seeking support from an experienced debt advisor or your local Citizens Advice Bureau. They can advocate on your behalf, assist with budgeting, and determine realistic repayment amounts.

Understanding Controlled Goods Agreements

When preemptive negotiation fails, and bailiffs have already entered your premises, they typically establish a Controlled Goods Agreement. This agreement details items they could seize and sell to recover the debt if necessary. However, this action doesn’t occur immediately. You can continue using these items (though not sell them) and have time to settle your debts and the bailiff’s fees or arrange a new repayment plan.

Who are the most successful racehorse owners?

Owning a racehorse can be one of the most thrilling experiences for sports-mad fans.

There are ample opportunities to get involved with owning a racehorse, with many people willing to spend thousands of pounds.

But for fans with more modest budgets, there are syndicates available online enabling them to own a racehorse from a leading trainer.

They give people the chance to rub shoulders and compete with the most established names in the game, and you don’t even have to be a racing aficionado to enjoy success.

Sometimes it can be as simple as picking the right horses and the right trainers to fulfil potential. Here are some of the standout owners in the field who have managed to build an empire of racing success with savvy moves.

Joe and Marie Donnelly

Joe and Marie Donnelly have enjoyed great success on the track over the last five years. Joe has a history in the racing game in Ireland, beginning life as a bookie before becoming an art investor and accruing millions.

However, the couple have been just as wise in the selection of their racehorses and trainers. In 2019, they made their breakthrough in the Cheltenham Gold Cup with Al Boum Photo as the tandem of Willie Mullins and Paul Townend steered the French thoroughbred to victory.

The following year Al Boum Photo along with his jockey, trainer, and owners joined a rare company of competitors to win successive Gold Cups. It’s not only Al Boum Photo that has brought joy to his owners.

Shishkin won the Arkle Chase with a dominant run in 2021, while State Man won the County Handicap Hurdle in 2022. They don’t have a huge empire compared to other owners, but when it comes to selecting the right horses Joe and Marie Donnelly have been on point, earning £3.5m from the track alone over the last five years.

Gigginstown House Stud

Owner of Gigginstown House Stud and Ryanair, Michael O’Leary, is a divisive figure in the world of business, but you can’t argue with his success on the track. He famously split from trainer Willie Mullins in 2016 citing the cost of placing his charges in his Closutton Yard. After that, he placed his horses in the hands of Gordon Elliott, who has moulded some of the greatest distance horses of all time.

Of course, Tiger Roll is the crown jewel of their empire, who became the first horse to win back-to-back Grand Nationals in 2018 and 2019 since the legendary Red Rum achieved the feat in 1973 and 1974. Gigginstown House Stud also won the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 2016 with Don Cossack along with a number of crowns in Ireland and the UK, including the Cross Country Chase and Irish Gold Cup.

O’Leary has since rebuilt his relationship with Mullins, so there will undoubtedly be more success in his future in one of the deepest yards around.

Kompany downplays Burnley chances at Newcastle

0

Burnley boss Vincent Kompany concedes his struggling side only have a “small opportunity of doing something special” when they go to in-form Newcastle on Saturday.

Up against a Magpies team that has had quite the week, which saw them put eight past Sheffield United on Sunday and knock treble-winning and Kompany’s old side Manchester City out of the EFL Cup, Kompany knows the Clarets will be up against it at St James’ Park.

He said: “That’s what you’re in the game for, [to face] every tough opponent and team of that calibre. There is also a small opportunity of doing something special.”

Burnley head into the weekend’s fixture on the back of a morale-boosting win of their own after cruising into the fourth round of the EFL Cup by putting four unanswered goals past Salford.

“It has been a good set of performances in the last three or four games, it feels good to do the job,” added Kompany, whose side have taken just a single point from their opening five Premier League fixtures.

The former Belgium international is unfazed, however, claiming he is more concerned with “getting this team Premier League ready and proving it week in, week out, starting at Newcastle.”

Burnley will be without injured duo Manuel Benson and Nathan Redmond for the trip to Tyneside.

Clifton Private Finance Secures Prestigious Regulated Bridging Loan Broker Award

Clifton Private Finance has gained significant recognition by clinching the ‘Regulated Bridging Broker of the Year 2023’ title at the esteemed B&C Awards this month.

The ceremony, which took place at The Hurlingham Club in Fulham, was a vibrant gathering of over 780 professionals from the finance sector, celebrating the notable achievements within the industry.

Demystifying Bridging Loans

Bridging loans serve as a financial bridge that enables individuals or businesses to secure prompt funding for property transactions.

They are short-term in nature (typically 12 months), providing a financial cushion until a more permanent solution is attained, such as selling another property or securing a standard mortgage.

For instance, they are particularly beneficial for those looking to purchase a new property before selling an existing one. But they can also be used to flip properties and sell on for a profit which is a popular strategy for property developers.

The B&C Awards and Clifton’s Distinction

The B&C Awards is a prestigious event that shines a spotlight on exemplary performers in the bridging, commercial, and development finance sectors. The award of ‘Regulated Bridging Broker of the Year 2023’ awarded to Clifton Private Finance is a testament to the firm’s excellence and dedication in providing tailored bridging loan solutions.

It places Clifton Private Finance in a distinguished position, reflecting its adeptness in navigating the complex financial needs of clients, particularly in bustling and competitive property markets such as Manchester’s.

The accolade follows Clifton Private Finance’s outstanding performance in 2022, where the firm scooped up two prestigious awards at the B&C Awards: ‘Service Excellence – Brokers’ and ‘Regulated Bridging Broker of the Year.’ This back-to-back achievement underscores the company’s unwavering commitment to providing superior service and expertise in the bridging finance sector.

Reflections from the Head of Bridging

Sam O’Neill, Head of Bridging at Clifton Private Finance, expressed his immense pride in receiving and retaining the ‘Regulated Bridging Broker of the Year’ accolade at this year’s Bridging & Commercial Awards.

He mentioned, “Incredibly honoured to win (and retain) the Regulated Bridging Broker of the Year at this year’s Bridging & Commercial awards. In an increasingly regulated market, it’s exciting to be at the forefront of a sector we don’t see slowing down.”

Manchester’s Evolving Property Landscape

Manchester is currently a hotspot for property activity. The city’s property market is on an upswing, with a mix of investment properties, buy-to-lets, new residential homes, and commercial spaces.

The dynamic market conditions necessitate flexible and swift financial solutions, making bridging loans an appealing option for prospective buyers and investors.

The Role of a Bridging Loan Broker

A bridging loan broker serves as a mediator between individuals seeking short-term financing and the lenders providing these funds, chiefly for property transactions.

They scour the market to identify the most favourable bridging loan tailored to your project and financial situation, ensuring you receive the best available rates.

Brokers liaise with lenders to expedite your application, leveraging their industry connections (keep in mind most bridging lenders won’t accept applications directly anyway and require you to use a broker).

They also negotiate with various stakeholders like solicitors, surveyors, and estate agents to streamline the deal, ensuring a smooth transaction.

Throughout the process, a good bridging advisor will prioritise keeping you comfortable and well-informed, making the complex process of securing a bridging loan considerably more manageable and less stressful.

How Far Back Do Tenant Background Checks Go?

Understanding how far back tenant background checks go is crucial to making informed decisions about potential new tenants. A well-executed background check can protect your investment and minimise the risk of troublesome tenants.

This comprehensive guide, from landlord advice experts AST Assistance, covers everything you need to know about tenant background checks, including landlords’ legal requirements, the advantages and disadvantages of conducting background checks, and how landlords can best navigate background checks to fulfil their obligations. You can find more landlord-related news and information here.

The importance of tenant background checks

Tenant background checks serve as a valuable resource for landlords, allowing them to evaluate a tenant’s financial stability, rental history, and criminal record. These checks offer crucial information for making informed decisions about prospective tenants, thus reducing the chances of unpaid rent, property damage, and other potential issues that may arise during the tenancy. It can also ensure future issues such as tenant subletting or similar are avoided.

How far back tenant background checks go

In the UK, tenant background checks can comprise several components, each with different timescales. For instance, credit checks generally provide a snapshot of a tenant’s financial history over the past six years. When it comes to employment history, checks can cover the entire duration of a tenant’s working life. However, landlords typically request details of the past three to five years. As for rental history, landlords usually ask for references from the previous two to three landlords to gain insight into the tenant’s rental track record.

Criminal records can be assessed through a basic Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check that shows unspent convictions, while a standard or enhanced DBS check reveals spent convictions, cautions, and other police information. There is no specific timeframe for criminal record checks, as the provided information relies on the type of check and the individual’s history.

Legal requirements for tenant background checks

Although conducting tenant background checks is not a legal requirement in the UK, landlords must adhere to certain guidelines. For example, landlords are legally obliged to check a tenant’s immigration status to ensure they have the right to rent property in the UK. Furthermore, landlords must comply with the Data Protection Act 2018 and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) when handling tenants’ personal information. Additionally, landlords must avoid discriminating against potential tenants based on protected characteristics, such as race, age, or disability, as outlined in the Equality Act 2010.

Advantages and disadvantages of tenant background checks

Carrying out tenant background checks offers numerous benefits to landlords. Background checks help identify potential tenants who pose a lower risk of non-payment, property damage, or other issues, thus minimising risks associated with renting. Thorough checks can also safeguard your property and ensure a smoother tenancy, protecting your investment in the long run. Demonstrating due diligence can then foster trust between landlords and tenants, leading to a more positive rental experience for both parties.

On the other hand, tenant background checks present some drawbacks. The process can be costly, particularly when conducted frequently or for multiple properties. Background checks can also be time-consuming, especially when requiring comprehensive checks on several tenants. And the accuracy of the background check results may not be entirely reliable – landlords must exercise caution when interpreting the information provided.

Landlord rights and obligations in tenant background checks

As a landlord, you have the right to request background checks on potential tenants. However, you must also respect their privacy and abide by data protection regulations. To ensure your compliance with the law, obtain the tenant’s consent before conducting any checks and avoid discrimination based on protected characteristics.

Protecting landlords through background checks

Conducting tenant background checks can protect landlords in various ways. For example, a tenant’s financial history can help landlords assess the likelihood of timely rent payments, reducing the risk of rent arrears.

In addition, selecting tenants with a positive rental history can minimise the risk of disputes or issues during the tenancy, resulting in fewer disagreements. Comprehensive background checks can lead to more stable, long-term tenants, reducing the need for frequent tenant turnover and saving landlords time and resources.

Navigating the complexities of tenant background checks

The legal tenancy environment and tenant background checks can be complicated for landlords to navigate. By seeking expert legal professionals in tenancy, such as AST Assistance, you can alleviate much of the stress associated with the process and ensure compliance with relevant regulations. Our experienced team can guide you through the process, helping you protect your investment and make informed decisions about potential tenants.

Understanding your obligations as landlord

Understanding the extent to which tenant background checks go back is crucial for landlords in the UK; conducting thorough checks can minimise the risks associated with renting property while ensuring compliance with legal requirements. As the process can be complex, seeking assistance from expert tenancy professionals like AST Assistance can alleviate stress and ensure you make the right choices for your rental properties.

A look at all of Chelsea’s summer transfers

0

Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital have now spent over £1 billion since they bought Chelsea from Roman Abramovich last year, and the new co-owners of the West London club are showing no signs of tightening their purse strings anytime soon despite rising concerns surrounding how they could possibly be meeting Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations.

Whether they have found potential loopholes or are breaking the rules, that’s a story for another day. But, thus far, Chelsea’s spending isn’t getting them anywhere and new boss Mauricio Pochettino is still asking for patience from the Stamford Bridge fans after another slow start to a Premier League season leaves them unfavourable in the Paddy Power football odds.

Trigger-happy Chelsea need to listen to the old cliché ‘trust the process’ now more than ever. So, let’s take a look at the summer arrivals and see how they fit in with the club’s vision going forward.

Moises Caicedo – £115m

Moises Caicedo’s record-breaking move to Chelsea was part of one of the most dramatic transfer sagas this summer, as Liverpool initially agreed a British-record fee of £110m for the Ecuadorian. However, he made it clear he only wanted to move to Stamford Bridge and he penned an eight-year deal in West London. The Reds might breathe a sigh of relief after his error-prone debut against West Ham United, but give him a chance to settle.

Romeo Lavia – £58m

The other player involved in Chelsea and Liverpool’s tense battle off the pitch, Romeo Lavia had been the Reds’ top target to replace Jordan Henderson and Fabinho at Anfield this summer. But the Blues joined the race late and the young Belgian also opted for the capital over Merseyside, with football news sites claiming former Blues winger Eden Hazard helped him make his decision. It will be interesting to see how he fits in with Enzo Fernandez, Caicedo and Conor Gallagher all vying for a starting berth.

Christopher Nkunku – £52m

Chelsea fans knew for the best part of the last year that Christopher Nkunku was making the switch from RB Leipzig this summer, but after finally confirming the deal in June and impressing in pre-season, the French international picked up an injury in one of the Blues’ final friendlies and is going to miss a large part of the season. It’s a massive blow for Pochettino and Chelsea have missed him thus far.

Axel Disasi – £38.8m

With Kalidou Koulibaly leaving just 12 months after signing for Chelsea and Wesley Forfanapicking up yet another lengthy injury, the Blues had to venture into the market for a centre-back and landed Axel Disasi for £38.8m from Monaco. The Frenchman impressed on his debut vs Liverpool, scoring Chelsea’s equaliser, but he was poor in the loss to West Ham.

Nicolas Jackson – £31.8m

Eyebrows were raised when Chelsea acquired Nicolas Jackson for over £31.8m from Villarreal. But the forward scored 12 times in 26 La Liga appearances for the Yellow Submarine last summer and he has proven to be a pleasant surprise in a Blue shirt, getting plenty of kudos for the manner in which he has led Chelsea’s attacking line in the opening weeks of the season.

Robert Sanchez – £25m

With Edouard Mendy departing for Saudi Arabia, Chelsea needed a new goalkeeper and Boehly once again used his close links with Brighton to fix their problem — signing Robert Sanchez for £25m. The Spaniard fell out of favour under Roberto De Zerbi last season and Chelsea have granted him the chance to wear the No.1 jersey again. Is he up to the task though?

Lesley Ugochukwu – £23.2m

The fourth player to be signed from Ligue 1 under Boehly’s tenure, Lesley Ugochukwu arrived from Rennes for £23.2m at the beginning of August. The French U-19 international featured 47 times in the league for his previous side and made his Chelsea debut off the bench against Liverpool. It will be interesting to see what Pochettino decides to do with the 19-year-old this season now Lavia and Caicedo have joined to pack out the midfield.

Angelo – £12.95m

Chelsea signed promising Brazilian talent Angelo from Santos for £12.95m in June. The 18-year-old made 129 appearances and scored five goals in the Brazilian top flight. He will spend the season on loan at Ligue 1 side Strasbourg. Deivid Washington also arrived from Santos for £17.1m

Djordje Petrovic – £12.5m

With Kepa Arrizabalaga returning to Spain to fill the void of the injured Thibaut Courtois at Real Madrid, Chelsea needed to bring in another keeper this summer. They turned their attention to Djordje Petrovic and agreed a deal of £12.5 million plus £1.5m in add-ons with New England Revolution for the Serbian. He played 45 times in the MLS and has two caps for his country.
