No suitable location for Christmas lights switch-on event in Manchester this year

0

Lack of a suitable and safe location to host the annual event that usually kicks off Christmas in Manchester means that this year there will be no Christmas lights switch-on show in the city.

Council bosses have spent the last few weeks trying hard to find a location that would be both big enough – with appropriate sightlines for an audience of families with small children – and also safe enough to host the much-loved annual event that regularly attracts thousands of people into the city centre to kickstart the festive season.

Despite best endeavours and trying everything to make things work, the amount of construction work currently underway at key locations in the city centre this year rules out a big switch-on event.

Plans are however already being made to ensure that the event returns to the city centre again next year 2023, ahead of what promises to be the biggest and best ever switch-on event in Manchester’s history the following year in 2024 when the event will once again return to Albert Square in front of the city’s majestic and magnificent Victorian Town Hall.

Councillor Pat Karney, Christmas spokesperson for Manchester City Council, said: “We’ve tried really hard to make a big Christmas lights switch-on event happen again this year after not being able to have one for the last couple of years, but despite our very best efforts this just isn’t going to be possible.

“Anyone who has been in the city centre recently can’t fail to have noticed all the development work going on to make Manchester even better than it already is, and as great as this is it does mean we’ve not got the space needed to safely manage a big switch-on event this year.

“The ongoing work to renovate the Town Hall rules out Albert Square, as does ongoing demolition and construction work at the end of Deansgate.  Piccadilly Gardens unfortunately isn’t suitable in its current formation for a switch-on event, and after having a good look at safety and sightline issues we’ve also had to rule out St Peter’s Square as a site that is just too complex to manage to ensure a successful event that could be enjoyed by the thousands of people, including young children, who usually attend.

“We’re very well aware how much families enjoy the switch-on and what it means to them and are gutted that we can’t deliver an event this year for them.

“We will however definitely be back with a big switch-on event next year for them, followed by Manchester’s best ever Christmas switch-on event the year after that in 2024 when our wonderful Town Hall and Albert Square will be back in use again.

“In the meantime we’ve pulled out all the stops and have got some extra special Manchester Christmas magic in store this year to bring a sparkle to the city’s streets and put a smile on everyone’s faces.

“Watch this space for more announcements very soon on some absolutely not-to-be-missed free festive treats coming to Manchester this Christmas.”

Although there won’t be a big switch-on event this year, the city centre will still be dressed in its sparkly Christmas best with streetlights, lights in trees, and light installations throughout the city centre from Thursday 10 November when the Christmas Markets open.

The exception to this is St Peter’s Square, which will host Remembrance Sunday events on Sunday 14 November, and will therefore not be lit for Christmas until the week beginning Monday 15 November to coincide with the welcome return of Father Christmas who will once again be taking up residence in front of Central Library for the duration of the festive season.

Expert quotes:

Information from the experts: Palm, Chester

With numerous lockdowns, have you seen a boom of people eating out? Has it continued into 2022?

After each lockdown the rise in people eating out increased enormously however since the beginning of this year we have seen a dramatic decrease from year on year and pre-pandemic of people eating out.

Do people have more worries when it comes to eating out?

100%! People have more thought about how and where they are spending their money and making sure they are getting value for their spend.

Are you seeing more mid-week bookings? Weekends?

Weekends continue to be busy for us however outside of any school holidays the mid-weeks are not as busy.

Do you have more pre-bookings (rather than walk-ins) compared to pre pandemic?

We definitely are taking more bookings in advance than pre-pandemic; I think people are planning more now and again are keen to book places they feel their spend is appreciated.

Flex workspace provider Orega embarks on growth plan as it appoints property heavyweights to advise its Board

Andrew Hynard (formerly  JLL and Howard de Walden Estate) and John Snow (formerly Knight Frank) become senior board advisers to fast growing flexible workspace provider who has five sites in Manchester

Orega, the flexible workspace provider, has appointed senior property figures Andrew Hynard and John Snow as advisers to its Board. The move is part of Orega’s growth strategy – to find further properties to expand its flex space offering across the UK -doubling its size in the next three years.

Andrew Hynard was previously Chief Executive of the Howard de Walden Estate, the £4.6 billion commercial and residential property estate in Marylebone. Prior to that he built his career at JLL for over 30 years as a senior real estate investment specialist and where he became Head of the Capital Markets Division and then Deputy Chair of the UK Business.  He was also formerly Chairman of the Investment Property Forum and the RICS Commercial Property Forum.

John Snow was previously Head of the UK Commercial Business of Knight Frank, Global Head of Office Agency and responsible for Knight Frank’s commercial activities in North America. He chaired the Commercial Board and sat on The Group Exec Board. Prior to overseeing the wider commercial business, the majority of John’s 40-year career at Knight Frank was in the Central London Office Leasing Market including being Head of Central London Offices.

Zach Douglas, Orega’s CEO said, “Both Andrew and John are extremely highly regarded in the property industry with strong reputations, a wealth of experience in the offices markets from both an investment and agency perspective and strong personal connections. They are fantastic additions to our team as we move into this, the next stage of our growth cycle and increasingly speak to landlords and corporate occupiers about their property needs.”

Founded in 2001, Orega is one of the UK’s most established flexible workspace brands and now has 21 operating sites across the UK in major cities including London, Bristol, Birmingham, Leeds, Liverpool, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Manchester- the latter where it recently announced its 5th site in the city at the Tootal Building. It is looking for further city and major town centre sites and is keen to speak to property owners with suitable space.

The company pioneered the flex space management agreement and believes its bespoke partnership offering will be particularly attractive to landlords and corporate occupiers who have excess space to fill, particularly as the demand for flex space and flexible ways of working continues to grow.  This trend has been heightened in the current economic climate given the reluctance of businesses to be tied into long leases.

Zach Douglas continued, “The time for flex is certainly now. Landlords that deliver high quality and appropriately designed flex space in their buildings are better able to attract and retain occupiers who are still analysing their medium-term space needs, given today’s changing working patterns and who want the flexibility of being able to expand or contract down the line.

With our well-established management agreement strategy, we can offer our landlord partners and occupier lessees a solution that monetizes their space with a high-end office product and building amenity- whilst allowing them to retain control of their asset and brand.”

Andrew Hynard added, “I’ve been impressed with Orega’s dynamism, vision and ability to create and let quality space in the prime UK cities, creating returns for both itself and its landlord partners. Orega has the professional offering and stature of a company with over 20 years standing that has withstood recession and the Covid crisis, together with a forward-thinking strategy about what both property landlords and occupiers want and need in the twenty first century.”

John Snow continued, ““It is an exciting time to be working with Orega- growing an already well-established Flex business. As the market navigates post-pandemic working practices, office tenant space needs remain uncertain.  Developers and landlords consequently need to be offering and welcoming greater flexibility, with expansion space. The Orega management agreement model, offering extremely high-quality flexible office space, promotes a partnership approach allowing landlord and flex provider to share in the upside, and provides greater security in any downturn, whilst meeting today’s occupier needs. “

EY recruits 104 graduates and apprentices to Manchester office as part of investment in early talent

  • EY in Manchester has hired 84 graduates and 20 apprentices through its student recruitment programmes – more than any other UK office outside London
  • Over the last three years in the UK, EY has increased its student intake year on year and hired more than 3,600 students
  • The firm is investing in its recruitment processes to improve accessibility and reach more diverse candidates

EY in Manchester has recruited 104 new students – more than any of the firm’s other UK offices outside London – including 84 graduates and a further 20 apprentices.

EY has welcomed a record 1,473 students into its UK business this year – up 35% compared to 2021 – as the firm continues to invest in young talent to support its future growth.

This year’s student cohort included 1,269 graduates and 204 apprentices. Almost 40% will be based in EY’s regional offices, with Manchester, Leeds, Newcastle, Birmingham, Edinburgh and Reading all seeing large intakes as the firm continues to strengthen its regional presence.

Of the new student hires in Manchester, 47% are women and 39% are from an ethnic minority background, of which 4% identify as Black or Mixed-Black.

Additionally, EY provided work experience, summer internship and industrial placements to over 470 young people nationally. These programmes are designed to provide insights into EY, learning experiences and networking opportunities.

Hywel Ball, EY’s UK Chair, commented: “These are record numbers for EY as we continue to invest in young talent to support our growth across the UK. We’re continuing to see strong levels of client demand and continued investment across the firm, which is why we’ve increased our student intake year on year, over the last three years, and hired more than 3,600 students.

“This is an important talent pool for EY that we want to nurture and support as they begin their careers. It’s also why for a third year running, we honoured all conditional offers we made prior to A-Level and Highers results in recognition that many students had their studies disrupted during the course of the pandemic.

“Over the coming months, our new students will spend time getting to know their colleagues across EY, begin their training and start working with clients.”

Stephen Church, EY’s Managing Partner for Manchester, said: “We are exceptionally pleased to be able to welcome more than 100 talented graduates and apprentices to our Manchester office. At EY in Manchester, we strive to provide the very best advice and services across consulting, assurance, financial services, people services, tax, technology and strategy and transactions, and we’re proud to be able to add further strength to our outstanding teams. We are both confident and optimistic that the careers we are offering our new people will provide them with exciting, varied and rewarding opportunities to help drive growth both for our clients and for our business.”

Attracting diverse talent

EY has also invested in new technologies and processes to help simplify the application process for its student recruitment programme, making it more transparent and accessible. These changes are designed to improve accessibility and remove unnecessary recruitment barriers to ensure the profession is open to students from all diverse backgrounds.

The new simplified application process means candidates can now complete applications in one go, rather than in several sittings, and they can expect hiring decisions much quicker than ever before. The process focuses on candidates’ potential, ensuring strengths are assessed.

The firm is also creating a virtual career centre to provide candidates, parents and teachers with resources to support early career decisions.

EY is also using digital technology to engage and attract candidates alongside in-person events at schools, colleges and universities. The firm uses virtual reality job simulations at career fairs so people can experience what it’s like to work for EY. There is also a first of its kind virtual reality internship for its tech consulting business, which is a combination of in-person, remote and virtual reality work. Using purpose-built virtual environments, interns can learn about sustainability and gain a realistic preview of the job.

The firm is known for leading innovative ways to attract new people. In 2015, EY completely removed the 2:1 entry academic criteria for all graduate roles.

EY is committed to becoming an employer of choice for young people and is collaborating with Jack Parsons, CEO of The Youth Group, to achieve Youth Verified status. The Youth Group is focused on helping young people thrive and its industry-leading accreditation is building trust between young people and employers.

Businesses in Manchester could see widespread disruption when PSTN services are withdrawn in 2025

The PSTN/ISDN WLR switch off will impact businesses and councils in more ways than one, with equipment such as lift lines, alarms and CCTV, to door entry systems and ATMs potentially affected.

Widespread disruption is likely to hit Manchester if businesses do not update their networks ahead of the PSTN switch-off date in 2025, according to Maintel, the cloud and managed communication services.

The switch-off will impact a wide range of communications products, especially those that use Wholesale Line Rental (WLR) services. Organisations that use ISDN, PSTN or DSL Broadband services will need to migrate them to new digital alternatives. It can’t wait until 2025 – exchanges are being phased out now, so network changes must be rapidly planned now.

BT announced its intention to close the PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) by the end of 2025. However, WLR products will be removed from sale by September 2023 in preparation for the move to next generation digital services. In some areas of Great Manchester, BT is no longer selling WLR products including some areas of Bury, Oldham, Salford and Wythenshawe.

Covid-19 has been the main focus of the public and private sectors alike over the past two years. This has caused many to put off improvements to networks, deemed noncritical. Research by Maintel, the cloud and managed services company, reveals more than half (56%) of councils that responded to a freedom of information request (FOI) across England and Wales have no strategy for withdrawal of services.

However, further procrastination could be costly. Organisations need to be mindful of current supply chain issues for networking technology that can currently be in excess of 12 months, along with the challenges of installing new technologies across their historic buildings. They need to account for this in their FY 2023 budgets to ensure any technology upgrades needed can be ordered to be delivered and installed in time for 2025. They therefore need to start comprehensive audits of their estates in preparation for identifying any affected services.

Dan Davies, Chief Technology Officer at Maintel

“Failure to plan for the WLR withdrawal could have a huge impact on organisations, their users and their citizens. Without services such as alarms or lifts, which rely on PSTN lines, offices and hospitals will not meet safety standards and will be forced to close. Telephony systems that connect to the outside world via ISDN could also be cut-off, potentially impacting critical services.”

“The potential downtime and financial cost associated with it, couldn’t come at a worse time for businesses. Therefore, businesses need to invest now to save later. For those in the Manchester the clock is ticking.”

Out With The Old | In With The New: How a Name Change Can Signal a Fresh Start

A name change can be a fresh start for many people. It can signal a new beginning and be a way to leave the past behind. For some, it may be a way to start over after a difficult time in their life. Others may simply want to reinvent themselves.

There are many reasons why someone might want to make the switch. Maybe they don’t like their name or want to connect with their heritage. Maybe they’re tired of being called by a nickname they never liked. Or maybe they just feel like it’s time for a change.

Whatever the reason, changing your name can be an empowering experience. It’s a way to take control of your life and create your own identity. Therefore, if you’re considering switching, do it!

Why Can a Name Change Be Beneficial?

A name change can represent a new chapter in their lives, free of the baggage and negativity associated with their old name. It can also be a way to signal to others that you are serious about making positive changes in your life.

For some people, a name change can be empowering. It can help them feel like they are in control of their lives and destiny. It can also help them to feel more confident and positive about themselves.

A name change can also be a way to show respect for yourself and your personal journey. It can be a way of honouring the person you have become and the things you have accomplished.

How Can a Name Change Be Done?

Maybe you’ve gone through a tough breakup and want to leave your old life behind. Maybe you’re tired of your boring, old name. Or maybe you just want to start fresh with a new identity. Whatever the reason, changing your name can be a big decision.

The process is relatively simple. You just need to fill out a deed poll form and send it to the UK Deed Poll Office. You can find more details on the official GOV.UK website. Or contact a solicitor for more information and a smooth process. They’ll send you an official document you can use to change your name on all your other documents, like your passport and driving licence.

What to Expect After Changing Your Name

Firstly, think about how hard it might be to get used to being called by a new name. Whatever the reason, changing your name can be a big decision with many repercussions.

Think carefully about what you want your new name to be. It may seem like a small detail, but your name is something you’ll be stuck with for the rest of your life, so it’s worth taking the time to choose wisely. Once you’ve settled on a new name, there are a few legal hoops you’ll need to jump through to make it official.

Conclusion

Few people get the privilege of naming themselves when it comes to making a fresh start. A name change can signal a new beginning, but it’s not always easy. Your name plays a significant role in defining who you are. It’s how you’re known to family, friends, and the world. Changing it can be difficult and may take some time to get used to. It can be expensive and time-consuming, especially if you change your legal documents (driver’s licence, passport, etc.).
