The Vita Group caps landmark year for sustainability with EcoVadis gold medal

0

The Vita Group has achieved a gold medal from EcoVadisthe world’s most trusted provider of business sustainability ratings, further bolstering the flexible PU foam manufacturer’s environmental credentials.

This tremendous accolade builds upon the Silver award received in 2021, meaning The Vita Group is now ranked among the top 3% of global companies assessed on sustainability performance by Ecovadis.

This latest achievement caps a year that has seen Vita confirm its status as an environmental leader. In the year, Vita has launched Enhancing Everyday Life, its inaugural sustainability report and became the first flexible PU foam manufacturer in the world to set science-based emissions reduction targets in line with the level of decarbonisation required to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement – to limit global warming to well-below 2°C above pre-industrial levels and pursue efforts to limit warming to 1.5°C.

Additionally, Natalie Watson has been appointed as Vita’s head of sustainability, focusing on further developing The Vita Group’s environmental, social and governance (ESG) strategy, implementing the plans outlined in Enhancing Everyday Life.

This will entail supporting key greenhouse gas reduction initiatives and supporting the commercialisation of Vita’s sustainability-focussed product ranges.

Ecovadis rates and continually monitors companies’ CSR management and progress while offering tools to drive improvement. It validates corporate adherence to 21 recognized CSR criteria which follow verifiable international CSR standards (the Global Compact Principles, the International Labour Organization conventions, the Global Reporting Initiative standard, and ISO 2600).

Natalie Watson said: “This EcoVadis Gold Medal is a testament to our company’s commitment to social and environmentally responsible business practices, and caps what has been a landmark year for Vita Throughout our long history, we have seen it as our duty to break new ground in sustainable technologies within the flexible PU foam manufacturing industry, in 2023 and beyond we will continue to explore new ways we can innovate to provide solutions that deliver for our value chain while helping to protect the planet for future generations. Scoring in the 97th percentile of assessed organisations worldwide reassures us that we are on the right path. We know we have far to go but this award gives us momentum to make further progress on our sustainability journey.

Ian Robb The Vita Group‘s CEO said: “I would like to congratulate everyone at Vita for working towards this fantastic achievement. The Ecovadis Gold award would not have been possible without the support and dedication of a great many of our colleagues across all our 38 European sites, and everyone who is associated with The Vita Group should be immensely proud of our sustainability journey. We have more to do in 2023 and we’re working hard to achieve Platinum in the coming years.

New 1.45 million sq ft HPARK development launched

Net Zero industrial development opportunity in Manchester’s manufacturing and distribution heartland.

The North West’s largest sustainable industrial development opportunity is being launched to the market in January by Russells, following completion of a new motorway link road to service the site.

HPARK is a new 120-acre distribution and industrial park in Heywood providing up to 1.45 million sq ft of floor space across six prime Grade A units ranging in size from 39,000 sq ft to 688,000 sq ft, with the potential to create more than 2,400 new jobs.

The site has an outline planning consent for B2/B8 use, offering clear heights of up to 18m and overall building heights of 23m, and has the potential to provide an operator with up to 1 million sq ft of Grade A distribution space, subject to a further planning approval. The largest unit H-688, a 688,000 sq ft B8 distribution building, has full detailed planning approval and is ready for construction to begin as soon as an operator is signed.

Russells has made a number of sustainability commitments for HPARK to support operators’ carbon reduction ambitions including Net Zero in Construction, BREEAM Excellent, EPC A, roof-mounted photovoltaic panels, and electric vehicle chargers.

Employee wellbeing is also high on the agenda. The site will include high quality landscaping and benefit from a range of amenities including an all-weather multi-use games area, three grass pitches, green corridors for walking and cycling, and outdoor recreational seating areas, cycle lanes and a new bus stop to encourage green travel options for workers.

HPARK is being brought forward by north west property and construction group Russells. The group’s development arm, Russell LDP (Land, Development and Property), is managing delivery of the scheme, which will be built by award-winning regional main contractor Russell WBHO.

Andrew Russell, joint managing director, said: “HPARK provides a new opportunity in the current market for operators looking to specify a bespoke facility to their exact requirements. The availability of the highly sustainable H-688 unit in particular is unique in the region – where there is a current lack of large-scale distribution space under construction –will be an attractive prospect for operators.

“The location is already acknowledged as one of the best in the region for East to West connectivity, as demonstrated by household names located within the wider South Heywood logistics hub. The newly opened motorway link road makes the area even more attractive by reducing journey times thereby cutting fuel costs and carbon emissions.”

Just nine miles from Manchester city centre, HPARK is located directly off the recently opened A6184 link road in Heywood which will cut return journeys to the motorway network by 17km, immediately saving upwards of 267,000 road hours a year and significantly reduce carbon emissions.

A prime logistics location, the area off Pilsworth Road is already home to major brands such as Argos, Kuhne & Nagel, Fowler Welch, Aramex, Martin Brower, and Lineage Logistics.

The site offers full flexibility of size, specification and site location, presenting a truly bespoke opportunity for operators. Russells is offering units on a leasehold basis, each will be bespoke design and build.

All units will be built to the Russell CORE Specification as standard, an industry-leading ‘fabric first’ approach to improving build quality and operational efficiency. This includes increased insulation depths, improved air tightness, 50kN minimum floor loadings, 100% photovoltaic-ready roof areas, air source heat pumps and high-quality CAT A office fit out.

CBRE and Colliers have been appointed joint agents.

Paul Cook, CBRE senior director industrial and logistics North West said: “The North West has seen record take-up over the past two years and HPARK has come at the right time to supply much-needed space to support local, national and global operators in the region.

“While there have been a number of major transactions in 2022, across the North West the supply of Grade A space over 100,000 sq ft stands at 1.7m sq ft, circa six months average supply, but 23% is under offer. And of the five biggest spec builds currently under construction, 30% is under offer, making HPARK a genuinely exciting prospect in this market.”

John Sullivan, Colliers’ director of industrial and logistics, added: “The opening of the new link road is a gamechanger for Heywood and makes HPARK one of the best connected sites in the region. The location is within two hours’ drive of almost 30% of the UK population, in an area world-renowned for logistics with a skilled and available workforce, and will accommodate all types of distribution requirements. Providing operators with a highly sustainable building and the chance to design it to their own specification makes HPARK an exceptional opportunity for operators of all sizes within this sector.”

North West GP group reveals growing patient desire for appointment flexibility according to new research

0

UK group of GP practices outlines blueprint for sustainable primary care

New research by the respected Wigan based GP group SSP Health reveals that, post pandemic and contrary to negative reporting and government policy, patients across the north west are increasingly keen on more flexible GP access, to fit in with their lifestyles. By selecting remote services, many are being seen by a doctor or other qualified practitioners more quickly. In fact, 70% of respondents said they waited less than 3 days for a GP appointment and 43% reported getting a doctor’s appointment within 24 hours.

The newly released research which surveyed 2,290 people, (conducted by Censuswide for SSP Health,) reveals that despite regular negative headlines about GP access, patient behaviour is, on the ground, rapidly adapting to the post pandemic reality – that GPs are in short supply and struggling with ever growing workloads.

The new findings suggest that there is increased patient desire to engage with new, innovative and efficient ways of accessing GPs and other qualified health professionals. Remote appointments (phone and digital) are increasingly being used by patients to access quicker, more convenient quality health care, to suit their personal schedules. At a time when it is widely acknowledged that there are not enough GPs to meet current, and rapidly growing demand, SSP believes that the government-driven face-to-face GP appointment model, has urgently to be adapted and reconsidered to meet society’s pressing needs. This new research appears to confirm that ministers’ views are out of sync with many patient’s desires. This survey clearly demonstrates that patients want and need more flexibility in the way in which they access primary care services. There is a clear willingness to engage with a variety of healthcare professionals, as well as telephone and online appointments for appropriate conditions, alongside face-to-face care. This acceptance is key to maximising the efficient use of scarce GP time and resources.

Key findings reveal:

  • 56%, a majority of patients according to the survey, had non face to face appointments for their last appointment. More than a third of GP consultations take place over the phone – a delivery resource which helps GPs treat more patients in an average session.
  • This increasingly mainstream way of accessing GP care has, according to the new survey, helped 70% of patients to see their practitioner within 3 days. The Government wants GPs to guarantee face to face appointments within 14 days.
  • Contrary to negative headlines about GPs, SSP’s research reveals that patients rate their local GP practice and an impressive 85% told us they are either very happy or receive acceptable levels of care from their local surgery.
  • Fewer than 10% of patents surveyed said they were unhappy with their local practice.

Andy Scaife, CEO, SSP Health comments: “This survey clearly demonstrates that not all patients need or want to see their GP in person for all their health needs. The days of the family doctor being the sole provider of all medical care are over and, in any event, unsustainable. While there will and must always be access, face to face to a GP for those that need it, what this survey confirms is that many patient presentations can very effectively and safely be dealt with by another healthcare professional who has the appropriate expertise. There are so many conditions that can be monitored and treated by dedicated specialists outside the GP consulting room. And this survey reveals that the public now understand and appreciate this. For example, 82% of patients, stated they would not insist on seeing a GP for a sore throat.”

Dr Zed Shah, Chief Medical Officer, SSP Health, added, “Whilst the former Health Secretary stated that the Government would guarantee face to face appointments within 14 days, our view, at SSP Health is that 14 days is too long to wait. We believe patients can access high quality care remotely or from a deep pool of specialist health care providers much more quickly. Trying to guarantee all patients rapid face-to-face GP appointments, will only make queues longer than they need to be.

“This important new research suggests that there is a growing desire amongst the public to access this easy, punctual way of seeing the GP or other well qualified health professional. Patients are pragmatic and increasing numbers of them do not insist on seeing their GP face to face for every health concern. They are clearly willing to receive high quality care over the phone and from a variety of healthcare professionals.”

SSP Health has a total of 40 practice sites across the north west region and has invested in new technology and infrastructure to ensure healthcare resources are utilised in better, smarter ways.  Pioneers in flexible, user friendly services for patients delivered by pooling its cross practice expertise, SSP Health aims to improve patient experiences by delivering care when, where and how the patient wishes to access it.

Andy Scaife, CEO, SSP Health, added: “The issue of GP availability is an urgent nationwide issue and the government has an outdated and unrealistic view. Patients clearly have a desire to adopt a new, more effective model of care provision. The added benefit of allowing patients access to healthcare in the way they want it is that it frees up GP capacity. We have taken things a step further, through well planned responsive centralisation and dramatically reduced the heavy bureaucratic burden weighing on our GPs. This is tangibly allowing them more valuable time to treat the patients who need them.”

Matt Hancock missed chance to discuss Dyslexia on I’m A Celeb, BeBroadcast reports

0

The analysis asks whether the MP’s campaign to get the disability recognised in UK schools is enough.

Findings by Be Broadcast, a broadcast public relations specialist, shows that Matt Hancock MP’s goal to raise awareness and spark discussions about dyslexia failed during his time in the jungle. The findings have been released this month following the MP’s parliamentary campaign to pass the Dyslexia Bill.

The Findings

The data ranges from the beginning of November to December, concluding mentions of dyslexia were overshadowed by breaking news that OFCOM had received thousands of complaints about the MP’s appearance on the show. Once Matt Hancock MP noted he was seeking ‘forgiveness’, findings show the subject of Dyslexia struggled to gain traction. Specifically, in comparison to 1,373 mentions of “Dyslexia” across broadcasting outlets, there were over 22,000 mentions of “Matt Hancock” during the period that the show aired.

Whilst there were over one thousand mentions of Dyslexia across UK broadcasting outputs, the company’s investigation discovered the MP’s mention of dyslexia minimally contributed to this number during his time on the show. The majority were ‘neutral’, with mentions of the learning difficulty relating to Mr Hackcock’s reasoning for joining the show. Other comments made by the MP were also classed as ‘negative in tone’ by the report, with the ex-Secretary of State for Health and Social care referring to the subject as a ‘joke’.

Most of the MP’s comments surrounding the learning disability were ‘neutral’, with most relating to Mr Hackcock’s reasoning for joining the show. Other comments made by the MP were also classed as ‘negative in tone’ by the report, with the ex-Secretary of State for Health and Social care referring to the subject as a ‘joke’.

Until post-series analysis, the subject of dyslexia made very little headway for the remainder of the series. Josh Wheeler, founder of Be Broadcast, commented: “If the intention was to really shine a light on Dyslexia – which impacts around 10% of Brits – then we would be disappointed with these results.”

He continued: “To an extent, the issue appears to have been used and messaging around the subject matter just didn’t land. Lots has been made about his intentions including a return to politics, media career and redemption – but based on this, it could be suggested the topic of dyslexia has been taken advantage of.”

The Dyslexia Foundation

The Dyslexia Foundation are a charity that ensures counselling and support for Dyslexia gets the funding and treatment it deserves.

With the specialist broadcast agency donating support to the charity, Steve O’Brien, CEO of the Dyslexia Foundation added: “The main problem with dyslexia is many people come into the space and leave without doing anything. As a media personality, Matt Hancock came across in the Jungle, like Ed Balls’ reinvention. I was disappointed that Matt never discussed his work to support the bill to screen children for dyslexia and give dyslexic children a voice in any detail.”

With the MP recently returning to parliament for his second reading of the Dyslexia bill, A bill to make provision for screening for dyslexia in primary schools, the charity founder believes his appearance on the show missed an opportunity to highlight his campaign. “We had Matt on our Podcast Words Fail Me, and he talked about his dyslexia positively and discussed his plans to screen children. But the UK does not have the infrastructure to address dyslexia, and hardly any trained teachers or financial support for formal diagnostic assessments or remediation. Matt had a great opportunity to do something with his position and prime time slot. I imagine he will leave the space with little change.”
