The Most Exciting Businesses to Embark on in the UK Right now

0

Many people in the UK are looking to start up their very own business, though it’s important to know your best options before making any final decisions. In this article, we’ll be telling you all you need to know about the best businesses to embark on in the UK right now.

Smart Technology Property Management Group

Taking into account all of the technology that is now on the market, the property management sector is years behind. They have not made many efforts to improve their lives or the lives of their tenants by using a significant amount of innovative technology. This is the perfect idea to consider if you have a strong interest in artificial intelligence technology, information technology, or even just basic infrastructure.

Online Gambling

Due to the fact that everything is now done online, launching a company in the online gambling industry is one of your best bets for making a profit. Launching a successful online casino business in the UK, such as Live Roulette at Unibet, is not only straightforward but also incredibly lucrative. If you comply with the regulations governing online casinos and get a licence, you can be certain that your first financial commitment will be a worthwhile one.

The growth of online casinos has been phenomenal, and the sector now accounts for approximately one third of the total revenue generated by the gambling industry in the UK.

Upcycled Furniture Business

Old pieces of furniture or materials are recycled and restored to create newer pieces of furniture that consumers would purchase and use to furnish their homes. This kind of furniture is referred to as “upcycled” furniture. This is a fantastic idea for a business because not only is it inexpensive to launch, but it also contributes to the expanding movement toward sustainability. This is especially important in today’s market, where an increasing number of customers are considering how their purchasing choices may have an impact on the environment and the climate.

Online Nurse Access Portal Service

The number of older people living in the UK is expected to continue rising, but not all of them want to depend on the country’s public health care system.

To be of assistance to these individuals, you might consider launching an online nurse access portal through which they could video call a doctor to discuss their condition and determine whether or not they require the presence of a nurse. In the beginning, you might consider squeezing out this aspect of the service in order to keep expenses to a minimum; and afterwards, you might look to expand it.

Personal and Corporate privacy compliance firm

Particularly in the United Kingdom and many other countries of the European Union, protecting the privacy of individuals is becoming an increasingly important concern.

There have been a number of major data scandals involving firms such as Facebook, Cambridge Analytica, WhatsApp, and other organisations. Companies that gather data from customers are losing the confidence of customers at an alarming rate.

To assist individuals in finding a solution to this problem, one approach would be to found a firm that specialises in corporate and personal data privacy. For instance, you might speak with already-established companies ranging from small to big to see how they can increase their level of safety. You might also collaborate with customers to assist them in the protection of their personal data, and you could even determine how much of their personal information is accessible to the general public.

Business Companion: a true friend in troubled times

The cost-of-living crisis is piling ever more pressure on businesses, with many traders deeply concerned about soaring energy bills, increasing supply costs and rising taxes, combined with declining levels of disposable consumer income. Business confidence levels have been affected by these challenges, and a recent study from chartered accountancy body ICAEW revealed that the North West has been hit particularly hard.

During these difficult times, it is important that businesses have access to reliable, up-to-date and easy-to-understand information about their legal responsibilities. With many businesses literally struggling to keep the lights on, the last thing they need is the headache of enforcement action for non-compliance.

Business Companion, a free online resource published by the Chartered Trading Standards Institute (CTSI) with the support of the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), provides businesses of all sizes and across all sectors with expert guidance on a wide range of consumer protection law issues.

The site contains concise guidance for busy traders who are unsure about aspects of the law and need to look up something quickly. For those who need a more comprehensive answer to their questions, in-depth guides break down the legislation in detail.

All of Business Companion’s guides are written by experts and in plain English. They outline the principles behind pieces of consumer protection legislation, answer frequently asked questions and provide checklists to help you and your staff ensure you are avoiding mistakes.

From restaurants to used cars, and from travel agents to care homes, Business Companion caters to a broad range of business types, each likely to be facing its own unique set of challenges at the moment.

The North West has over 900,000 companies and accounts for 10% of the UK’s GDP. The region plays a vital role in the business health of not only the north, but the whole country. No matter what you sell, where you sell it, or how you sell it, Business Companion should be your first port of call to find out how you can make consumer law work for you – so you can free up your time to focus on keeping your business healthy and resilient, and help the region navigate these difficult times.

Chief Executive of CTSI, John Herriman, said:

“As businesses and consumers alike face an unprecedented set of challenges, it is crucial that we work together to support one another. A big part of this is about spreading knowledge and awareness of compliance so that businesses can focus on staying profitable rather than spending time dealing with complaints and enforcement action.

“A visit to Business Companion to quickly check something or find an answer to a question can be a great way of ensuring that whatever line of business you are in, you are getting things right when it comes to complying with the law.”

Hello Earth Ends Year With Four New Hires, Four New Clients

A positive close to 2022 for the performance marketing agency with new hires and new client wins from Lululemon, Vorda, Temple Cycles and Fushi

Award-winning ecommerce marketing agency, Hello Earth has ended 2022 on a high, with four new hires, multiple new business wins and the expansion of its growth service list to now include SEO.

“We’re excited to be closing out a year of sustainable growth in this very positive way. Performance based marketing remains a key focus and priority for Hello Earth as we move into 2023,” says Stephanie Fisher, Founder & Director at Hello Earth.

“Introducing SEO into that mix ensures we remain fully integrated and focussed on the wider digital journey. Hello Earth has experienced excellent growth over the last couple of years. These new key hires will ensure we can continue to push the boundaries of what the team and agency can deliver on behalf of our clients,” Stephanie adds.

Formerly of marketing agency Strategiq, Levi Clucas joins Hello Earth Agency as SEO Manager, launching the agency’s new SEO offering. Levi brings with her five years’ of PR and SEO experience working agency side with big-name clients, including TONI&GUY and Reuters.

“SEO enables brands to invest in their own assets, such as their website, and pair with platform-based advertising, such as Meta and Google Ads,” says Phil Kiel, Managing Director at Hello Earth. “It’s a longer-term, more sustainable marketing strategy, which is incredibly useful for our clients in an increasingly competitive marketplace, as the benefits from SEO compound over time. Where we use Ads to generate intent, SEO helps us capture that intent and meet users where and when they are looking for brands and services.”

Also joining the team in November, Charli Ferrand Higgins’ focus as Head of Operations will be to put people, purpose and innovation at the heart of the agency. With 15 years’ experience both in-agency and client-side, Charli’s more recent focus has been supporting the sustainable growth and operations of aspiring purpose-driven organisations, and writing online courses for Cambridge University’s Institute for Sustainability Leadership, the first of which – Sustainability in Marketing, Media and Creative – launched in September 2022.

Adding further support to the agency’s email and content offering, Kira Penrhyn-Jones joins the agency as Email & Content Planner. Completing the raft of new hires is Megan Taylor, who joins from Add People as Paid Media Manager.

The new hires come off the back of a very successful year for the ever-expanding Hello Earth agency, which added Lululemon, Vorda, Temple Cycles and Fushi to its client roster in the last six months. The agency also celebrated the recognition of its founder, Stephanie Fisher, who was selected as one of the 100 Female Entrepreneurs to Watch by The Telegraph and NatWest in November.

Indie Ridge and Passle partner to revolutionise legal website offering for small to medium-sized law firms

Indie Ridge, a digital agency specialising in the development of high-performance JamStack websites, has partnered with Passle content marketing platform used by global law firms such as Reed Smith and Linklaters, to help small to medium-sized law firms revolutionise their legal websites.

Over the last few years as a result of a period of significant regeneration and investment, Manchester has reinvented itself to become the country’s second largest legal hub after London and is set to benefit from this new partnership.

The partnership will see Indie Ridge integrate Passle with the best-in-class website architecture called JamStack, used by firms such as Amazon, Nike, Sony and Tesla. As a result, legal firms will be able to benefit from lightning-fast web page speed making them more visible on Google and offering the ability to showcase their firm creatively and vividly without the limitations of traditional websites.

Passle is a suite of easy-to-use tools to write, publish and share insights to the market. These tools remove all the difficulty of publishing content, helping the average professional create 16x more insights. In the first two months of using Passle, Forsters received 5,000+ more website visitors, Howard Kennedy had 3,500 shares on social media and Colligan Law saw a 4,300% increase in LinkedIn Traffic.

Legal sector behind the times

The legal sector is notoriously behind when it comes to its digital offering. In a recent survey of the top 100 law firms, only one had ‘excellent’ website speed on mobiles, while 66% had poor loading speed, a major impediment on how much visibility they get on Google.

In a 2022 Bellwether report, it was found that for 33% of law firms web development is high on the agenda and 36% of law firms say they plan to increase their investments in tech in the near future. Yet when Bellwether asked law firms what was stopping them from implementation, the most prominent reasons were the lack of time (52%), technical expertise (46%), understanding (36%), and budget (35%).

Indie Ridge’s Co- Founder, Mike Chapman, says: “The battle for law firms is more significant than getting found online: it’s a battle to differentiate from the competition, retain clients, attract new talent and somehow increase client referrals, all while managing a heavy workload.

“Unfortunately, too many legal websites contain generic content and all look similar, we want to help law firms avoid falling into this trap.

“Through this unique partnership we will bring Passle-powered websites to small to medium-sized businesses. The content focused websites are design-rich and super fast to navigate, giving a highly credible online presence.”

James Barclay, CEO, Passle Inc adds: “We are delighted to welcome Indie Ridge to our partner programme. Their expertise in JamStack brings another technology approach to the Passle community providing flexibility, speed of implementation and speed of execution in website projects.”

LDC-BACKED MSQ ENHANCES USER ACQUISITION AND CREATIVE SERVICES WITH ACQUISITION OF MIRI GROWTH

MSQ, one of the UK’s fastest growing independent marketing and technology groups, has acquired Miri Growth, a fully managed user acquisition and creative services agency, with the support of private equity partner LDC.

The transaction marks MSQ’s third acquisition in 13 months and follows the acquisition of design consultancy Elmwood, which was merged with Holmes & Marchant to create an international design group in December 2021, and the acquisition of the creative production studio Brave Spark in October 2021.

Miri Growth (Miri) works collaboratively with mobile gaming and mobile app developers to produce and test creative content to attract and retain high-value users across digital channels. It seeds that content out through performance marketing campaigns on channels such as Meta, TikTok, Google and Snapchat, measuring success and performance in acquiring users to drive profitable growth.

Miri is led by co-founders Adam Turowski and Zach van Driel, and the scale and support structures of MSQ, including its global footprint in the USA and Asia, will help the team to accelerate growth through attracting a broader client base and international talent to join its 40-strong team. Miri’s revenues for the year ending July 2022 were £4.8m and the business will retain its agency name and management structure, with Adam and Zach reporting into MSQ’s Executive Director, Ben Rudman.

The acquisition will also enhance MSQ’s existing user acquisition and content skills, particularly bringing greater depth in mobile app acquisition and deep knowledge of digital channels, such as TikTok, Facebook, Instagram and Google.

Peter Reid, Global Chief Executive at MSQ, said: “Miri is a highly creative, agile and successful business and we look forward to welcoming the team into the MSQ family to further build our creatively led, tech-enabled and data driven business model. By joining us, Miri will not only be able to grow globally quicker but will have access to deeper data, analytics and performance reporting capabilities.”

Leading mid-market private equity firm LDC invested in MSQ in 2019 to support the management team’s plans to accelerate the roll-out of its successful multi-disciplinary model and support the continued growth of its individual agencies. The private equity investor is actively working with the management team to explore complementary acquisitions that support these plans.

John Clarke, Investment Director at LDC, added: “This transaction is a great example of a buy and build strategy in action. There is a strong cultural and strategic fit between the two businesses and by joining forces, MSQ and Miri will be able to fulfil their growth ambitions further and faster whilst continuing to create opportunities for their people and clients. It’s been a pleasure to support the team on the transaction and we’re looking forward seeing what’s next in store for MSQ.”

MSQ is one of the UK’s fastest growing independent marketing and technology groups with more than 1,100 people working across 10 agencies in 13 global offices. Clients include Unilever, Vodafone, Coca-Cola and Zalando. It recently celebrated its tenth year with its strongest results yet, with revenue increasing by 57% (to £91.3m) and EBITDA rising 51% (to £11.4m) in the financial year to the end of February 2022.

Top Tips For Finding The Best Roofers in Manchester

0

How do you find the best roofers in Manchester? The truth is there are many roofers located throughout the city, but you want to take the time to find and choose the best one. With that said, here are a few top tips to finding the best roofers in the city.

Use Resources To Find Roofers

The very first thing you need to do is find roofers in Manchester or that serve Manchester. This is easy because you can use your favourite search engine to find roofers. As a general rule of thumb, you want to find as many roofing companies as possible because the more roofers you research, the better the chances are of finding the best company.

There are comparison sites you can use. You can also visit a roofing company’s website directly to learn more. When you research reputable local roofing companies such as Roofers Manchester, the below tips should help you:

Commercial & Residential Roofing

When researching roofers, you’ll want to see if they provide commercial services or residential services. Different roofing companies serve different customers, while some roofers provide roofing services to both residential and commercial clients. If you run a business that needs something done to its roof, then make sure you find a roofer that provides commercial roofing services or one that offers both commercial and residential services.

However, if you need roof work done to your residential property, then hire a company that provides residential roofing services. If you hire one that only provides commercial roofing services, then the work might not be as good as it would have been if performed by a residential roofing company. As a general rule of thumb, the best roofers in Manchester can work on both commercial roofs and residential roofs.

 Roofing Services Offered

The best roofers offer an array of roofing services. This includes making full repairs to roofs, inspections, maintenance services, and emergency roofing services. From fixing leaks to installing a brand new roof to making extensive repairs, the best roofing company can do it all.

When comparing roofers, make sure to view the services they offer. You might find that not only does a roofer offers the service you need right now, but they offer services you’ll likely need in the future. For example, your roof might have leaks that need to be fixed, but the roofing company you’re looking at offers maintenance services in addition to being able to fix leaks.

Experience: Number Of Projects Handled

It’s important to hire an experienced roofer in Manchester. Bear in mind that experience doesn’t mean how many years a roofer has been in business for. It refers more to how many roofing projects the company has handled. As a general rule of thumb, you should ask a roofer how many roofing projects they’ve worked on within the last year alone.

A company may have been in business for 10 years. However, if they have only tackled a handful of small projects in the last year, then you’re better off finding a roofer who has tackled many projects within the last year. This is regardless of how many years they’ve been in business for.

Licenced & Insured

Cowboy roofers aren’t licenced and/or insured. Some cowboys have expired licences. The best roofers are properly licenced and insured. Any reputable roofer will have no problem showing you their licence, as well as tell you that they are insured.

Insurance is important. It means that the roofing company is covered in the event something goes wrong when they work on your roof. The last thing you want is for an uninsured roofer to damage your roof.

Quality Of Work

Take a look on the roofers’ websites and see if they have a portfolio or example of their past work. This will give you the idea of what kind of quality of work you’ll receive if you hire them. The best roofing companies in Manchester perform high quality work, regardless of how small or large of a project they are working on. The last thing you want is a low quality job to be performed on your roof because the chances are you’ll need the work redone within a short period of time.

Read Reviews & Testimonials

Take the time to read testimonials on the websites of the roofers you’re researching. Make sure to check out reviews on third-party sites, too. Even the best roofers in Manchester will have a few negative reviews written about them, but as long as the majority of reviews are positive in nature, then you can overlook the negative reviews. Use reviews to get an idea of a company, but don’t base your decision on hiring one solely based on reviews.

Rates And Quotes

Finally, how much a roofer charges is important to know. However, don’t hire the cheapest roofer in Manchester just because they’re the cheapest. You want to hire the best roofer that provides the best quality work, and the best overall services. The key is to hire a roofer that offers tremendous services at a competitive price.

Also, request quotes and estimates from several roofers in Manchester. Compare each quote and see what’s included with each service. This will increase your chances of finding the right roofer at the right price.

When it comes to finding the best roofers in Manchester, make sure to keep the above tips in mind. All you have to do now is start searching for roofers. Make sure you compare a few roofing companies before you decide which one to hire.

OCU GROUP WILL CONNECT OVER A MILLION PROPERTIES TO ULTRAFAST FULL FIBRE BROADBAND AS PART OF ONGOING GROWTH

OCU Group Limited (“OCU”) has recently further expanded its already large footprint in the UK telecoms sector and added support that it provides to some of the country’s leading telecoms operators after securing new contract wins with existing clients including CityFibre, VM02, Openreach and most recently with new client KCOM, who are looking to bring full fibre superfast broadband to properties across Hull and East Yorkshire. These wins mark the latest steps in OCU’s telecoms growth plans.

In West Yorkshire, OCU is already working as CityFibre’s principal contractor for the build of a new Leeds network. Sheffield, Wakefield and Rotherham networks are also being upgraded with all homes to be connected by March 2025. In the Northwest and the South, OCU has further secured CityFibre builds in towns and cities including Luton, Reading, High Wycombe, Wokingham Wigan, Warrington and St Helens.

Progress with VMO2 on the Fibre-Up programme commenced in the Merseyside and Watford areas earlier this year and plans are already afoot to expand delivery on this programme in Yorkshire and the Northwest next year and further into the Southeast; further adding to OCU’s portfolio of Infill works.

OCU have added build areas in South Wales, Greater Manchester and Yorkshire to their already established works in London and the Home Counties on Openreach’s Fibre Cities Programme and the business looks forward to continue serving Openreach on their Fibre 26 programme.

In the Nottingham area, OCU has recently commenced works, building a new FTTP network for Gigaclear with whom they began working with in South Wales and the Southeast two years ago.

KCOM, CityFibre, Gigaclear, Openreach and the VM02 Infill works programme are all supporting the UK government’s £5 billion Project Gigabit by providing next generation connectivity for homes and businesses across the UK. The government is committed to ensuring 85% of UK homes have access to ultrafast broadband by 2025, up from the current 70%.

To optimise the capabilities of OCU and support its rapid growth, new office and depot facilities are being established in Nottingham and Wigan along with the creation of a new Regional Service Centre in Leeds and upgrades to existing facilities in Borehamwood, Sheffield and Luton, where colocation with some client teams is now becoming the norm.

Vital support is being provided by OCU’s recent acquisition ventures with FKS in the Northwest, Opals Group in the East of England and InICT in Yorkshire.

Michael Hughes, Chief Executive Officer of OCU Group, said:

“The further expansion of our activities across Yorkshire and the Humber with KCOM extends our telecoms contracting footprint across England and Wales, marking another step in our ambitious plans to increase our nationwide rollout capabilities and in turn, support the future of the UK’s economy. Whether it’s for businesses, or families keeping in touch with loved ones, being connected is increasingly vital in today’s world. We strive to provide the best possible services to our clients, and I look forward to OCU continuing the deployment of fibre infrastructure around the country as we help more people stay connected.”

Peel L&P hails 2022 a major success at Trafford Palazzo

Peel L&P is celebrating at Trafford Palazzo, as its team completes 60,000 sq ft (5,575 sq m) of lettings and brings four significant flagship venues to TraffordCity’s innovative retail and leisure destination, in just one year.

The landlord acquired the retail and leisure asset in 2021 and rebranded it to Trafford Palazzo, a brand which encompasses and complements the Italian heritage design.

In the past year Trafford Palazzo has agreed transactions with international brands, national firsts, new concepts, major flagship venues and some of Greater Manchester’s most popular and exciting brands.

Trafford Palazzo has also become synonymous with creating a programme of community events and activations for all ages, from a month-long wellness activation, a half term extravaganza, a 4-week Summer Fest and more recently the festive, ‘Christmas on TP Street’. Over the past year, Trafford Palazzo has played host to so many memorable experiences and meaningful activities which have helped generate an average of 100,000 visitors a week.

The food and beverage offering has been elevated with Italian restaurant Matterello, backed by Manchester foodie, Steve Pilling, opening its doors to rave reviews and Manchester born and bred Second City Coffee launching its coffeehouse earlier this year within the Trafford Palazzo mall.

A focus on attracting major leisure brands that elevate the offering as a rival destination for retail, leisure, and entertainment for families of all ages, has proved extremely successful with several exciting brands choosing Trafford Palazzo.

King Pins, a multi-purpose bowling venue, will open its doors in 2023.  King Pins at Trafford Palazzo is the first site in the UK and will feature 15-lanes of ten pin bowling and 6-lanes of duckpin bowling alongside a focal point bar serving over 20 beers and a selection of soft drinks. A pop up, giving a taste of their offering was activated in the main malls in October and proved very popular.

Matt Jones, Founder and CEO of King Pins, said: “We are really excited to be launching our flagship venue in Manchester and where better than the impressive surroundings of Trafford Palazzo.

“The venue will be family friendly during the day with plenty of activities to keep the whole family occupied. When the evening comes the lights will go down, the music will go up, and the atmosphere will become electric, appealing to evening entertainment seekers.”

Rocafella Leisure announced last month that Nerf AX will join a growing leisure mix at Trafford Palazzo with Manchester based American-inspired diner, Archie’s, to be their operator of food and beverage.

An exciting coffee operator has also taken 2,150 sq ft (200 sq m) of space with further details to be announced. The new venue will start work on site for its first north west site at Trafford Palazzo in January 2023 with a planned spring opening.

Underpinning Peel L&P’s core value, in establishing Trafford Palazzo as the place for community engagement, the team has hosted free activities and events for families throughout the year including an Easter holidays event in partnership with several attractions and brands, from crafts, bitesize bootcamp activities, a specially curated music schedule including live DJs and bands and a ‘homegrown’ slot giving local performers the chance to perform on Trafford Palazzo stage.

Celebrating and supporting local businesses and start-up organisations has been an integral part of the strategy with the team offering the space at Trafford Palazzo free of charge providing a platform for brands such as Project D, Beigel Cheshire, The Juice Hub, and Little B’s Cakery.

Sophie Roberts from The Juice Hub said: “The Juice Hub insight figures on Instagram have doubled since we hosted our pop-up and we have received two corporate offers with more on the horizon. Whilst networking and meeting amazing people and brands, this was our first event in a retail space, thus making it a special part of The Juice Hub journey.”

As part of a wider events programme, there have also been various charity collaborations including Bolton Lads and Girls Club, an appeal for Ukraine, events celebrating the Queen’s Jubilee as well as two events for Baby Loss Awareness Week raising funds for Tommy’s charity. A campaign to support Mental Health Awareness Week also took place alongside a 4-week wellness schedule encouraging all Trafford Palazzo visitors to take time for their health and encouraged mindfulness across the region.

Earlier this year, landlord Peel L&P also appointed a Sustainability Manager to manage its ESG credentials across its portfolio.  Trafford Palazzo is a key part of this strategy, and a sustainable commitment has been pledged as part of the wider corporate Peel L&P Sustainability Plan.

Amanda Reid, Sustainability Manager Investments for Peel L&P said: “We are fully committed to reducing our impact on the environment and ensuring that we provide places which are socially inclusive and accessible to all.  We have a robust Sustainability Plan in place for the Trafford Palazzo and are dedicated to working with our tenants and engaging with our customers to ensure we are aligned to achieve our goals.’’

Mark Whittaker, Executive Director Property Investment and Management at Peel L&P said: “Trafford Palazzo has gone from strength to strength this year and we are extremely proud of what our team has achieved. We have really focused on delivering high-quality customer service and memorable experiences and space now represents the next generation of shopping and leisure destinations. Our aim is for Trafford Palazzo to be known as a destination for memorable experiences that combine retail, leisure, and entertainment. The operators that are opening and are set to open in 2023 absolutely highlight our vision is coming to life.”

Other operators at Trafford Palazzo include Primark, Merlin operated LEGOLAND® Discovery Centre and SEA LIFE, Silentnight, Homesense, and Natuzzi.

Trafford Palazzo sits in the heart of TraffordCity, which currently records 44 million visits per annum, has an audience of 11 million within a 45 minute-catchment area and has had an investment of circa £2 billion to date.  Plans are in place to bring the UK’s first city-based £200 million wellbeing resort, Therme Manchester, and a new surfing facility called Modern Surf.  Work has started on Peel L&P’s Trafford Waters this year, a new waterside community that will bring a mixed-use sustainable community of 3,000 homes, a primary school, offices, hotels and around 20 acres of new public open space. Fives Soccer Centre also launched its next generation footfall centre earlier this year

Salford City Council Chief Executive Tom Stannard appointed Chair of the Institute of Economic Development

Tom Stannard, Chief Executive of Salford City Council in Greater Manchester, has been appointed as the new Chair of the Institute of Economic Development (IED) Board of Directors.

In a long and distinguished career in local government spanning over 25 years, Tom has worked in a variety of senior economic development, regeneration, growth, skills and policy roles at councils across the North of England and London, and is a former Deputy CEO of the UK Learning and Work Institute. He was appointed Chief Executive at Salford City Council in February 2021.

As a National Spokesperson for SOLACE and a Commissioner for the Living Wage Foundation, and formerly as a Board Director at the Centre for Local Economic Strategies (CLES), Tom has developed a reputation as a nationally recognised specialist in local government, public service reform and delivering inclusive economic growth.

A Chartered Surveyor by profession, Tom has been an IED member since 2017 and a Board member since 2019. Following the Institute’s Annual General Meeting on 5th December, Tom replaces outgoing Chair Bev Hurley CBE, who remains on the IED Board of Directors after six years as Chair and two years previously as Vice-Chair.

“I am delighted to be appointed Chair of the Institute of Economic Development as the pre-eminent UK-wide body representing our diverse profession, and I am keen to build on the impact and growth we achieved under Bev, who has done an absolutely sterling job in driving membership and engagement,” Tom said. “The IED, as a UK professional body, is totally unique. It represents the group of professions with the highest impact on the national Levelling Up mission. We already have over 1,000 members, both individuals and organisations, and we aspire to double in size as part of ambitious plans for future growth. I have personally seen the benefits as a member, with the IED’s sector-leading advocacy, insight, network and CPD programmes that have supported my development over the years.”

The past 12 months has been a reminder of the diversity of economic development: through placemaking, regeneration, town centre management, infrastructure delivery, land and property development, enterprise promotion, business support, inward investment, employability, skills, innovation and other fields of general economic development, demonstrating how IED members support the sector in its widest sense.

“That goes even further when you consider the ever growing synergy with professionals in planning, surveying, engineering, highways and transport and other fields, as well as the enormous impact that economic development can have on health and well-being outcomes,” Tom explained. “Our increasingly diverse membership is drawn from local authorities, LEPs, higher education institutions, government departments and consultancies supporting economic development and we aim to expand this further. Promoting greater diversity and inclusion in economic development will be a key priority for me in leading the Institute. I also intend to develop strong partnerships with other professional bodies. Tom continued: “This is an exciting time for the IED. The top government priority is to fix the economy which our members are right at the heart of delivering. The opportunity to lead, as Chair, a mission to support professionals to build the foundations of future places was very hard to resist.”

Bev Hurley CBE added: “I am delighted to formally welcome Tom as our new Chair. It has been a great privilege to serve the profession, and I am staying on the IED Board as a Director to continue to do so. I look forward to supporting Tom, Board and IED members as we move into our 40th year as a successful professional body.”
