IT SPECIALISTS TEAM WITH GUIDE DOGS TO HELP SUPPORT THOUSANDS OF CHILDREN WITH VISUAL IMPAIRMENTS

Accredited IT specialist, Sync, have teamed up with Guide Dogs to support the charity’s ‘Tech for All’ scheme, a programme aimed at improving the wellbeing and autonomy of children living with visual impairments through assistive technology.

Tech for All provides free assistive technology to children with a vision impairment aged 3 – 18 in the UK. The devices come with accessibility features built-in, perfect for use outside of the classroom.

Sync is joining the project to support Guide Dogs in the procurement of devices going forward, and officially commencing the partnership in October 2022.

The continuation of the Tech for All service follows its pilot scheme in 2021, where 5,000 devices including iPhone and iPad were given to children with visual impairments.

Tech for All has helped to significantly improve children’s confidence, creativity and independence. The results of a survey completed by users indicated that after just four months with a device, a child’s reported autonomy increased by 18%, engagement by 13% and sociability by 5% on average.

Tom Crump, Head of Sales at Sync, commented: ‘We’re immensely proud to be entering into partnership with Guide Dogs, and to be supporting the organisation’s brilliant Tech for All programme. The scheme has been created with children’s needs in mind, and we have always felt strongly that technology is a great way to maximise both a child’s confidence and autonomy.

‘The technology provided is easy to use by design and Guide Dogs has uploaded tutorial guidance online for families seeking further assistance once their child receives their iPad.’

Head of Operations at Sync, Scott Bordoni added: ‘Sync has long recognised the need for strong partnerships not only with schools and Academy Trusts, but also charitable organisations that support learning and development. We know that iPad has incredible educational benefits, but the use of the devices in the Tech For All scheme also allows children to socialise with family, friends and classmates from the comfort of their own home.’

Emma Foulds, Director of Marketing and Strategy at Guide Dogs also added: ‘Tech for All has been designed to enable children with sight loss to be more independent and do whatever it is they want to do. We know how important these devices are to your child’s development – both to support their learning at home or to explore the activities and interests they enjoy. The accessibility features on an iPad or iPhone will prove key to unlocking and maximising a child’s potential.’

A record-breaking Christmas reported by The Fragrance Shop

The UK’s largest independent fragrance retailer, The Fragrance Shop, announced record Christmas trading in stores and online. The company saw a 11.2 per cent increase in underlying sales in the six weeks ending 31 December 2022, compared to the same period the previous year.

This record sales performance was fuelled by popular new fragrance launches, such as Paradoxe by Prada, Fame by Paco Rabanne and Explorer Ultra Blue by Montblanc as well as successful partnerships with Hermès and Maison Margiela as the business continues to expand its luxury and niche categories.

The Fragrance Shop has also continued to invest in its bespoke digital platform and store estate.  The company opened 12 new stores in the year and now trades from 216 locations nationwide.

The retailer’s My TFS subscription programme also saw a 150 per cent increase in memberships sold.

CEO Sanjay Vadera MBE commented on the company’s success, saying: “Our teams have worked hard to deliver another exceptional Christmas despite the challenges posed by economic uncertainty, industrial action and the general pressures on consumer disposable incomes.

“While the economic outlook for the year ahead remains uncertain, we are confident we are well placed to not only weather those economic headwinds but thrive, as we continue to invest and grow.

“The convenience of being able to mix and match between shopping in-store and online will be the bedrock of our plans for 2023.

“We will continue to invest and expand our footprint both digitally and physically to offer our customers the premium shopping environment we know they demand.”

GREAT NORTH PIE CO EXPANDS PRODUCTION TO 25,000 PIES A WEEK AFTER ACHIEVING 20% YOY ORGANIC GROWTH

The pie firm has grown from husband and wife in their home kitchen, to a team of 25+ supplying over 300 pubs and restaurants nationwide and businesses including Stockport County F.C, Booths, RHS, Virgin Trains 1st Class and several Premier League football clubs

Great North Pie Co, the home of high quality, award-winning pies, has achieved 20% YOY business growth since it launched in 2011, as it announces it is set to open a brand new city centre kitchen and bar.

After growing organically over the last 12 years, the self-funded business has grown from its initial husband and wife team to now produce up to 25,000 pies a week during the busy Christmas period, supplying consumers directly via monthly farmer’s markets and its online store, plus to more than 300 businesses nationwide.

With a strong team of 25 now on board, Great North Pie Co has set its sights on establishing its flagship venue in its hometown to accompany its other pie and mash cafes, which already include venues in Altrincham and the Lake District. The new Manchester city centre space, Kampus, will launch in February 2023.

Co-founder, Neil Broomfield, commented: “We’re lucky to be in this position and we don’t take anything for granted. We just focus on what we’re doing and always maintain the consistency and quality, both with our pies, but also through the way we treat our customers. We always try to do the best for them.

“We’re proud of how we work. We started from scratch without any knowledge or background in food production, so we’ve had to learn everything as we go. We always try to stay loyal and work with the same suppliers to help each other and to grow with them. We don’t chop and change. We’ve always invested back in the business to make it more productive and a nicer place to work for everyone here. There are difficult times ahead but we just need to focus, keep our heads down and keep on producing quality products.”

The news follows Great North Pie Co’s recent deal to supply its pies to a variety of football clubs, including Stockport County F.C., Leeds United F.C. and a premier league club, and has also boasted a listing with premium supermarket, Booths, where they have now been stocked for 4 years. Prior to the pandemic, its biggest customer was Virgin Trains First Class.

Great North Pie Co now supplies its small batch pies to a host of pubs and restaurants across the UK, including the likes of Robinsons Brewery, a family run, North West brewery, and Peach Pubs, which was recently acquired by bar operator, Revolution.

Each pie is made bespoke to the requirements of each business, where the Great North Pie Co team works collaboratively with the businesses on the flavours and techniques, including incorporating Robinsons Brewery’s own beer, Unicorn, into the ingredients for its menus. Both Robinsons Brewery and Peach Pubs have named Great North Pie Co as a top seller on its menus, with 55,000 pies being sold each year at Robinsons managed pubs alone.

Clive Dixon, Head of Food at Peach Pubs and previously Head Chef at Heston’s Hinds Head Bray, added: “We are proud to work with Neil and the team. We have a really good relationship and it’s great that we are able to work together on creating new flavours. If you want good quality, you go up north, and Great North Pie Co has beaten off the competition in all tastings I’ve done. The pies really are special and are phenomenal.”

With the winter season in full flow, Great North Pie Co hasn’t lost sight of where it began – at local artisan and farmer’s markets. This winter, their delicious hearty pies can be found at a host of farmer’s markets across Altrincham, Urmston, Bakewell and Chorlton.

BGN warming up Total Fitness with New Year campaign

0

Following a three-way competitive pitch which took place last year BGN – the Manchester-based brand-led design and digital agency – has created and launched a new campaign for Total Fitness that is aiming  to drive membership across the health club chain’s network following the Christmas holidays.

The project includes a coordinated campaign that spans Facebook and Instagram as well as YouTube  pre-roll and display advertising. It will run until 31st January.

Total Fitness is one of the leading health club brands in the North. Headquartered in Wilmslow, it currently   operates 15 health clubs including sites in Greater Manchester, Merseyside, Cheshire, Lancashire, North Wales, Lincolnshire and Teesside.

The core emphasis of the campaign is focused on communicating that Total Fitness provides a positive   space where anyone can train; no matter their age or ability. It also pushes the community feel that is central to every club which allows members to celebrate their own achievements and successes, whatever they might be.

The notion of community is a central pillar of the creative executions which feature slow motion cheering  as people swim that extra lap, join for the first time or level up on the treadmill. They are all about promoting personal fulfilment, personal success and the happiness that exercise brings.

Another layer of messaging is around value for money and the variety of benefits that Total Fitness members receive – including the ‘three pool offering’ which is available at every club – is also included.

Paul Bailey, client services director and founder of BGN, said: “Total Fitness is a much-loved Northern brand, so we are delighted to be working with them. The New Year is obviously a key time for the health and fitness sector, so we have focused on why people should choose Total Fitness to get active, get in shape and tackle 2023 with the best mindset possible.”

Owen McArthur, Marketing Manager at Total Fitness, added: “Each member of the Total Fitness community is on a different journey with their own unique set of goals, and we believe every step should be celebrated – no matter how big or small. BGN’s campaign has really captured the essence of that in a fun, light-hearted and witty way.”

JBH Launches Workplace Wellbeing Campaign

0

This Monday 16th January, consumer PR agency JBH will launch their Workplace Wellbeing Campaign, designed to protect employees mental health in 2023.

The campaign launches in response to research released last year, which found that over half of PR pros have suffered from severe stress or anxiety in the last 12 months. Moreover, nine in 10 respondents said they were unhappy with the changes that employers had put in place, to improve wellbeing in the workplace.

Jane Hunt, CEO of JBH and Rachael Rothwell, People and Culture Manager were so shocked by these statistics that they decided to reinvigorate JBH’s own mental health and wellbeing support, with the aim of protecting the mental health and wellbeing of the team.

The JBH Workplace Wellbeing Campaign is launching on Monday 16th January, by giving the team the day off to refresh, rejuvenate and relax on what is reportedly the most miserable day of the year – Blue Monday. The campaign will run throughout 2023, with various wellbeing events scheduled for the team to participate in, whether they’re office-based or remote.

Rachael Rothwell JBH’s People and Culture Manager explains:

“When looking at the issue of wellbeing in the workplace, it is important to take a strategic and mindful approach. It was vital for us to get the basics right first, ahead of the latest workplace wellbeing trends.

“Our Workplace Wellbeing Campaign needed to embody JBH values, be open and inclusive, include employees in discussions, and initiatives should serve both the business and the employee – that’s when you know you have the right balance”.

The key ways that JBH will protect and support their employees’ mental health and wellbeing:

Clear Career Progression Frameworks: Transparent salary banding and clear training and progression plans. Our people know what is expected of them and what they need to do in order to progress.

Putting Our People Before Profit: Identifying client accounts that were causing the team undue stress and worry, and removing them from the JBH roster. Last year we retired our largest account for the above reasons.

JBH Social and Wellbeing Team: Empowering the team to select the activities that mean the most to them, building and enhancing JBH’s culture from the inside out.

Work/Life Balance: Adopting the 4.5 day working week, to ensure that the team has more time to rest and enjoy themselves over the weekend, but being mindful of cramming five days’ work into four.

Cost of Living Payment: Adapting our financial support package to match the ever-changing world that we live in.

Jane Hunt CEO of JBH adds:

“When I read the results of the survey, I was so shocked by the statistics, I knew we wanted to do something about it.

“We recognise that this is an industry-wide issue, but first we needed to look inwards at how we were protecting the mental health and wellbeing of our teams and in short, it wasn’t where I wanted it to be.

“However, I didn’t want to create fluffy policies that look good on a job advert. I want our actions to really mean something to the team and truly improve the experience of working in PR. JBH is far from perfect, but I am really proud of what we have implemented so far”.

Restructure and Recruitment at Wain Estates

Land and property company Wain Estates has announced a new structure, splitting the company into two separate divisions; Development and Land Promotion.

The change sees Wain Estates Development Director, Jack Brister, promoted to Managing Director of Development and former Urban Splash Land Director, Angela Heaney, appointed as Managing Director of Land Promotion.

Wain Group Executive Chairman Will Ainscough, said: “The changes allow a fully dedicated team to focus on delivering the most important land asset within the Wain Group – Carrington Estate – with quality design and placemaking at its heart.

“It also gives us an opportunity to build a land promotion team that can focus on third party landowners and operate independently from the Group’s other land interests. The separation will allow the division to become a fully-fledged land promoter selling all its opportunities to the open market.”

Carrington Estate, the 1,665-acre former Shell Refinery site, is one of the largest regeneration projects in the UK with the potential to provide 3.5 million sq ft of employment space and up to 4,000 new homes.

Planning permission has already been secured for 597 homes and 1.2 million sq ft of employment. The first employment and residential phases have already been developed. Future phases are to be brought forward imminently.

Jack, who joined Wain Estates in 2019, said: “This is a hugely exciting time. We have a great team and have achieved a lot over the last couple of years. We are now in a position to really deliver on the potential at Carrington and have a number of projects at various stages in the delivery pipeline.

“Carrington Estate presents a major resource for jobs and homes for the whole region and our ambition and commitment is to deliver the very best we can.”

The Development team also includes: Paul Wrigglesworth, Property Director; Will Young, Project Manager; Kevin Fletcher, Project Manager; Jenny Dockney, Senior Surveyor; and Andy Hesketh, Estate Manager.

Experienced land professional Angela Heaney has been recruited to head up the Land Promotion team supported by Planning Manager, Nicholas Mills. The division is already promoting 3,950 residential homes on behalf of third party landowners, but is aspiring to evolve into one of the UK’s leading promoters.

Angela, who has previously worked as a Director for a national housebuilder and a large strategic land promotion company, will be looking to build a new team dedicated to growing the business across England.

She said: “I was attracted not only by the scope and potential of the role, but the culture and values of the Wain Group. You can feel there is a real sense of doing things in the right way to create the best outcomes for landowners. We also have the financial resource and wider Group support to help achieve our objectives.”

Will Ainscough added: “Our motivation is to make Wain Estates the best working environment with clearly defined strategies and career prospects. We want to create the right atmosphere for people to achieve their goals and ambitions.”

QASSS expands team as part of ambitious growth plans

Manchester-based QASSS, the UK’s leading resolution services provider to the home improvement and renewable energy sectors, has made two appointments as it kicks off its ambitious 2023 growth plans to almost triple its revenue.

Launched in 2021, the business has grown rapidly, already more than doubling its original headcount and taking on national clients including the Federation of Master Builders,  SafeStyle UK, Barclays Partner Finance and Shawbrook Bank.

QASSS is now targeting 153% year-on-year revenue growth, which will see it grow its client count by 50% and double its headcount once again. Already joining the business this year are supply chain officer, Matthew Walker, and business development manager, Colin Niblock.

Matthew will be responsible for the procurement of QASSS’s contracting services, with a focus on rates schedules, compliance and legal frameworks, with the role becoming increasingly critical as QASSS’s network grows.

With a background in the home improvement sector, having run his own glazing company and subsequently held senior commercial roles at organisations including Peninsula UK and SMAS Worksafe, Colin will be responsible for leading QASSS’s business development within the dispute resolution market.

As part of its growth plans, QASSS will be moving into new Manchester offices, rolling out a new career pathways programme, and launching five new services to the UK home improvement and renewable energy markets.

Ciarán Harkin, managing director of QASSS, said: “Thanks to our unique combination of human, technology and data resources, we’re able to help businesses and consumers resolve complaints, disputes and claims quickly, fairly and with as little stress as possible.

“Over the past two years our offering has proven incredibly popular, and we’ve quickly started using our expertise, innovation and experience to support clients right across the home improvement and renewable energy sectors. We’re looking forward to helping even more people in 2023 as we begin a year of exciting but sustainable growth.”

Fastest drop in permanent staff appointments since July 2020

0

The North of England survey from the UK Report on Jobs by KPMG and REC, showed diverging trends between staff types in December, as the fastest fall in permanent staff appointments since July 2020 compared with an uptick in temp billings. That said, the expansion in billings was only marginal overall.

Meanwhile, there was a slight improvement in vacancy growth in December, although the overall trend in staff demand was subdued relative to the 2022 average. Staff availability deteriorated further during the latest survey period, although candidate efforts to find better-paid roles supported improvements in some cases. Lastly, pay pressures remained elevated as demand and supply imbalances meant that the market remained candidate-driven.

The KPMG and REC, UK Report on Jobs: North of England is compiled by S&P Global from responses to questionnaires sent to around 150 recruitment and employment consultancies in the North of England.

Warren Middleton, Office Senior Partner at KPMG in Manchester, said:

Job vacancy growth picked up pace in the North during December, remaining well above national level trends. A rise in vacancies shows ambition among businesses to increase capacity to take advantage of opportunities in a difficult economic environment. Yet it also reflects the growing scarcity of good talent, as many employees are willing to sit out uncertainty in their current posts. Firms will hope to take advantage of January’s nature of being a popular month for resignations, as they look to fill longstanding vacancies to underpin growth.”

Sharpest fall in staff appointments since July 2020

The placement of staff into permanent roles across the North of England fell in December, marking a third successive monthly decline. Moreover, the rate of contraction was strong overall and the sharpest since July 2020. Slowing client activity levels, low candidate numbers and hesitancy to change roles were factors cited by surveyed recruiters.

The decrease across the North of England was in line with that seen for the UK as a whole.

For the first time since September, the seasonally adjusted Temporary Billings Index posted above the 50.0 no-change mark, indicating an increase in billings received by North of England recruiters from the employment of short-term staff.

That said, the expansion was only marginal overall and weaker than seen across the UK on average.

All four monitored English regions registered growth in temporary billings in December with the strongest expansion recorded in the South of England.

Demand for staff continued to increase across the North of England during December, and at rates which continue to exceed those seen in the other three monitored parts of England.

In fact, both permanent and temporary job openings rose at their fastest rates for three months during the latest survey period. Nevertheless, expansions remained well down from those seen in the first half of 2022.

Softest fall in permanent staff availability since March 2021

The seasonally adjusted Permanent Staff Availability Index rose markedly in December, but remained below the 50.0 no-change mark, to signal a considerably weaker deterioration in permanent candidate numbers across the North of England. Overall, the decline was the weakest since March 2021. Hesitancy among staff to move jobs was mentioned, although some people were reportedly open to new roles in a bid to secure higher pay.

Three of the four monitored English regions registered lower permanent staff availability in December. London bucked the wider trend and recorded the first uplift in 20 months.

Having broadly stabilised during the previous survey period, December data showed a renewed dip in temporary staff availability across the North of England. A lack of quality candidates on the market, and a preference among workers for permanent roles, were factors cited by recruitment agencies.

Although the deterioration was only moderate, it was faster than those recorded in the other three monitored English regions.

Starting salary pressures remain elevated in December

The latest survey data signalled a further sharp increase in starting salaries across the North of England in December. The rate of inflation also edged up slightly and was above its historical average. Strong competition for staff, and efforts to secure high-calibre workers, drove the upturn in salaries, according to surveyed recruiters.

All four monitored English regions recorded increases, with Midlands-based recruiters seeing the fastest inflation and London the slowest.

Surveyed recruiters in the North of England signalled rising temporary wages at the end of 2022. Moreover, the increase was sharp overall and faster than those seen across the other three monitored English regions.

That said, the rate of increase was the slowest since April 2021. Although clients reportedly upped their offers to secure talent, some contractors were willing to accept lower rates.

Neil Carberry, Chief Executive of the REC, said:

“A slowdown in permanent placements is not unusual in December. Recruiters tell us that this was because firms pushed hiring activity back into January in the face of high inflation and economic uncertainty. The big test of the labour market will come this month.

“Demand for staff continued to increase across the North of England at rates which exceeded those seen in the rest of England. Both permanent and temporary job openings rose at their fastest rates for three months, with temp billings rising for first time in three months in December. We also saw increases in starting salaries for permanent and temporary staff across the North of England.

“As we move into 2023, the need to ensure our labour market can deliver economic growth and prosperity should be a critical concern to politicians. People telling recruiters that they are anxious about moving jobs is a concern in this regard – as a move is a great way to boost pay and build up skills. If people are less willing to move jobs, this could make shortages worse in the near term. That is why a stable economy, and support to address labour and skills shortages – from welfare to work support to immigration and skills reform, need to be major priorities for all the UK governments.”
