Rapid expansion for Manchester law firm as it creates 20 new legal roles in the North-West

A Manchester firm, which has quadrupled its workforce in less than 2 years, is pushing on with ambitious growth plans for 2023 by adding 20 staff to its legal team this month.

Barings Law, who specialise in representing consumers and businesses who’ve been victims of mis-selling, began fighting for justice on behalf of clients in 2009.

Greater Manchester and Osaka strengthen partnership on the road to Net Zero

Between 16th to 19th January, Greater Manchester welcomed a delegation of city officials, academic and business leaders to the city-region to work on opportunities for partnership on the road to Net Zero and ahead of Expo 25 in Osaka.

The visit, spearheaded by MIDAS, Greater Manchester’s Investment Agency, the Greater Manchester Combined Authority and the Greater Manchester – Japan Steering Group, was organised with the intention of sharing ideas and innovation opportunities for decarbonisation, building on the learnings of the October trip to Osaka undertaken by Greater Manchester Combined Authority’s Low Carbon team, MIDAS, Manchester Metropolitan University and business leaders.

Over three days, the delegation visited several key sites around the city-region that are leading the way in trialling new low carbon innovations, including University of Salford’s Energy House Labs, the Manchester Fuel Cell Innovation Centre at MMU, the Growth Company’s Green Skills Academy in Trafford, the Museum of Science and Industry and The University of Manchester.

To accelerate innovative Net Zero products and services to market, aiding decarbonisation, Greater Manchester has established the Energy Innovation Agency, a public-private-academic partnership, and to further support new solutions developed in Greater Manchester, Innovation GM was created to provide the ecosystem and investment businesses need.

The initiative works as a blueprint for translational innovation between Greater Manchester (GM) and government, that could catalyse inclusive economic growth of £7bn.  With an emphasis on R&D commercialisation and industrialisation, it is open to working on partnerships and projects from innovative companies and hopes to attract even more from Japan, following a successful trip.

United Utilities invest £6 million in water quality improvements in Worsley

United Utilities has invested £6m in improving the water quality of Astley Brook in Worsley.  

The North West’s water company has completed a number of projects at the treatment works in the area to improve a 7km stretch of Astley Brook. 

Works have now been completed on a 500,000 cubic metre detention tank to help reduce the number of times storm overflows operate into the brook during periods of heavy rainfall. 

New technology has also been installed that will reduce the levels of phosphorous in the final effluent that is returned to the environment from the treatment works. 

These improvements will play its part in boosting the ecological status of that stretch of the brook to ‘good.’

Alicja Solarczyk, Project Manager from United Utilities, said: “It’s fantastic to see that all the work on site has now been completed.  This is a really important project that will make significant improvements to the water quality on this stretch of the Alder Brook and is part of our wider commitment to improve 184km of waterways across the region over the next two years.”

The project was delivered in conjunction with United Utilities’ construction delivery partner Advance+.

As part of its Better Rivers; Better North West campaign, United Utilities has committed to reduce the number of spills from storm overflows by at least a third, between 2020 and 2025. This will be supported through a £230m investment programme at sites across the region, leading to 184km of improved waterways.

Greater Manchester cycle hire programme launches new, cheaper way to pay with ‘minute bundles’

Greater Manchester’s cycle hire scheme users can now pay for their journeys before they hop into the saddle, saving them money.

A new and convenient way to pay – ‘minute bundles’ – is now available to riders through the Beryl app, allowing users to unlock standard pedal bikes without paying an unlock fee and use electric bikes (eBikes) at discounted rates. 

The cycle hire scheme had previously only offered a pay as you ride tariff, with users paying 50p to unlock a pedal bike or £1 for an eBike, which then cost 5p and 10p per minute to ride respectively. 

People who buy minute bundles will not need to pay to unlock standard pedal bikes, which will continue to cost 5p per minute to ride. While eBikes will still cost £1 to unlock using minute bundles, but will only be 5p per minute to ride – half the existing cost. 

Riders will be able to save time and money by purchasing minute bundles of between £5 and £40 on the Beryl Cycle Hire app from 6am, Monday 23 January.  

The existing ‘pay as you ride’ option will still be available to maximise flexibility for users.

Dame Sarah Storey, Active Travel Commissioner for Greater Manchester, said: “The cycle hire scheme has been a huge success, with more than 500,000km ridden by the current fleet of bikes up to the end of last year.

“As part of the refreshed active travel mission for Greater Manchester, which I launched in November, I recommended expanding the cycle hire scheme and looking for additional ways to make it even more cost-effective for users. The launch of the minute bundles is a great option for regular riders, making it more affordable at a time when everyone is feeling the pinch.

“I hope this change makes life easier for those already using the bikes and will give new users a reason to sign up soon.”

The introduction of minute bundles comes as the cycle hire scheme hit another major milestone, with riders collectively clocking up over 500,000km in journeys since its launch in November 2021. 

Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, added: “It’s been fantastic to see the Greater Manchester cycle hire scheme take shape and I am so pleased that we can now offer users a new way to pay with the minute bundles.

“Cycle hire is a key part of our Bee Network vision for an integrated, affordable, accessible and sustainable transport system and this new incentive makes it easier than ever to use our bikes and save money in the process. 

“Embracing active travel into your daily lives is great for your health, your wellbeing and it could even save some money, especially if you are able to leave the car at home for local journeys now and again.”

People can find their nearest cycle hire station by downloading the Beryl app on their mobile phone.

Infotec Limited advised by Flint Bishop on sale to Journeo Plc

The shareholder of IGL Ltd, the parent company of Infotec Limited, has been supported by Flint Bishop on its £8.7m sale to AIM-listed information systems and transport technical services group, Journeo Plc.

IGL Ltd designs, manufactures, tests and distributes its own passenger information displays to rail operators in the UK and around the world, one of the few British-based companies that does so. 

Over 2.19 million passenger journeys depend on Infotech’s products every day, with more than 15,000 displays in operation and covering 80 percent of the rail network.

Partner and head of corporate and finance, Martyn Brierley, led the deal for Tim Court, with support from Mark Wilcock, senior associate. Accounting was provided by Partner David Newborough and associate director Jonathon Williamson, of Ashgates Corporate Services Ltd, as well as tax advice to the selling shareholder on the disposal.

Brierley said: “We are delighted to have advised Tim on this successful transaction. The process was technically detailed at times so we are pleased to have helped bring the transaction to a positive conclusion for both Tim and Journeo plc. With Tim’s ongoing role in the business, we wish both Tim, Infotec and Journeo, the very best for their future together.”

TP Matrix’s growth plans boosted by new appointment

Sales specialist Michelle Greenan has returned to TP Matrix to support the Oldham-based business’s ambitious growth plans.

Michelle joins the 30-strong rail sector electronics company in a new role of business development manager. She previously served as sales and marketing manager from 2016 to 2019.

TP Matrix recorded a turnover of £2.2 million during a successful 2022 and has a healthy pipeline, having already secured large contracts to overhaul and upgrade electronics modules on London Underground trains. 

It is also helping clients to manage obsolescence issues by repairing electronic units such as train door controls that are no longer supported by their manufacturers.

Managing director Liam McDonnell said: “Michelle will not only help to secure new business but also assist in managing the increasing volume of enquiries and in providing an even better service for our existing customers.

“Our desire for further growth is being driven by our acquisition by Amcomri Group in 2021. Amcomri specialises in developing engineering companies like ours and appointing a BDM is the next step in establishing a solid platform for expansion.

OLD TRAFFORD TO BE REMOVED OF EXECUTIVE SEATS IN THE STRETFORD END

  • OLD TRAFFORD’S MOST RENOWNED STAND TO RETURN TO ALL-GENERAL ADMISSION SEATING FOLLOWING FAN REPRESENTATIVES DISCUSSION

Following constructive consultation with the club’s Fans’ Advisory Board, Manchester United will replace the executive seating area in the Stretford End with general admission season tickets at the end of the 2023/24 season.

The Stretford End has for decades been the matchday home of some of Manchester United’s most passionate supporters, while also being synonymous with many of the most iconic goals in the history of Old Trafford.

Following requests from fans, the club worked with its Fans’ Advisory Board to review the presence of executive seating within the Stretford End in support of successful ongoing efforts to enhance the Old Trafford atmosphere. It has now been agreed that all the seating in the Stretford End will be returned to general admission for the start of the 2024/25 season.

The decision adds to a series of fan-centric steps taken by the club following consultation with fan representatives, including the installation of rail seating and the creation of a dedicated atmosphere section in the Stretford End.

Rick McGagh, Head of Fan Engagement at Manchester United, said: “The Stretford End is one of the most famous stands in world football. It has been the backdrop to many of the most memorable moments in our history, and when it’s at its loudest you can feel the difference it makes to the players, and the connection the fans have with the team.

“Fans and fan groups including MUST and TRA have long campaigned for us to remove the executive seats from the heart of the Stretford End and to make them standard tickets and therefore more accessible to all fans.

“We have listened and agree that as many fans as possible should have the chance to be a Stretford Ender. We have worked with our Fans’ Advisory Board in recent months to make this happen and we are all looking forward to an even louder Stretford End from August 2024.”

Marcus Rashford’s 82nd minute winner in the Manchester derby this month was the latest in a long list of unforgettable goals scored in front of a jubilant Stretford End.

Denis Law and Eric Cantona are among other United stars to have formed a special bond with the fans known as the Stretford Enders. Cantona has called the Stretford End “the heartbeat of Manchester United,” while Law, known as ‘The King of the Stretford End’, is celebrated by a bronze statue on display to fans at the entrance to the stand.

The Stretford End is named after the area of Trafford that the stand backs on to and has existed as part of Old Trafford since the stadium’s opening in 1910. For decades, it was a standing terrace before being redeveloped into all-seating in the early 1990s. The International Suite was opened with a small section of executive seating in the first tier, and a second tier was added in 2000.

Collette Roche, Chief Operating Officer at Manchester United, said: “Structural work will take place over the coming year to return the Stretford End to general admission seating and create a new concourse. During this period, we will be consulting fans to understand how best to repurpose the space currently used by the International Suite.

“We very much value our executive club members who currently sit in the Stretford End and recognise the impact this change will have. The club is committed to working with those affected to find alternative seating where necessary ahead of the 24/25 season.”

Jason Colodne and Colbeck Capital Management Sponsor Children’s Tumor Foundation’s 2022 National Gala

Since 1978, Children’s Tumor Foundation (CTF) has been dedicated to finding treatments for neurofibromatosis (NF) and supporting the patients struggling with this often-debilitating disease. NF is a condition that causes tumors to grow throughout the body along the nervous system, affecting a variety of other bodily functions including sight and hearing. What’s more, the condition often leads to a lower quality of life for patients and their families who struggle to provide care and treatment. Children’s Tumor Foundation was founded in response to the growing need in both medical and patient populations for additional support and education around the disease and its outcomes.

As a nonprofit organization, CTF relies heavily on the generosity of patrons like Colbeck Capital Management, who provide funds throughout the year in support of various events. Most recently, CTF held its annual National Gala on November 14 at Gotham Hall. The event was also livestreamed to broaden the scope of those who could attend and participate in the festivities. The program included a dinner and then moved on to honor a number of contributors and ambassadors who helped make CTF’s efforts more feasible throughout the year. This included issuing the 2022 Humanitarian Award to philanthropist and advocate Rachel Tiven and the 2022 Innovation in Medicine Award to Dr. Allan Belzberg, the George Heuer Professor of Neurobiology at Johns Hopkins. The 2022 National Gala was supported by donors including Jason Colodne co-Founder of Colbeck Capital Management, and was hosted by actor and producer Jonathan Sadowski.

Neurofibromatosis affects more than 2.5 million people worldwide, and there is currently no cure for the disease. However, foundations like CTF are dedicated to supporting research that is driven to find a cure as well as therapies that can improve the quality of life for patients suffering from the disease. There are three distinct disorders that fall under the umbrella of neurofibromatosis: NF1, NF2, and Schwannomatosis. Each of these presents a variety of physical challenges to afflicted patients and have a different pathology that must be researched and better understood to develop a cure.

Colbeck Capital Management has supported CTF alongside the Colodne family through many fundraisers for over forty years. Bara Colodne, Jason Colodne’s sister, had neurofibromatosis and served as a CTF ambassador for many years. .

While the quest for a cure continues, Children’s Tumor Foundation’s support and funding for research have contributed to a number of positive outcomes toward that end. In 2020, the number of treatments available for NF grew to include the first FDA-approved drug for NF1. Additional clinical trials have been launched to focus on NF2 and Schwannomatosis individually, and there are now more than 68 clinical trial options now available and active. In 2020, CTF also expanded its Clinical Care Advisory Board to include representatives from Europe and Canada, furthering global collaboration on the research and studies underway. Awareness remains an important tenet for the Foundation, with innovation and patient care focused efforts designed to draw a wider audience throughout the community and bring together researchers to expedite outcomes.

All of these efforts rely heavily on the funds raised through events like the National Gala, which comes from organizations and individual donors alike. Eighty-four percent of all collected funds are rolled back into research and medical (61 percent) and public education and patient support (23 percent) efforts. The organization strives to allocate every dollar to get the most it can out of funds for the community and to advance its mission for a cure. At the center of everything that CTF does are the people who remain affected by the disease. Emphasis is placed not only on research but also on service, helping members of the community find resources to improve their quality of life. The organization also maintains a mindset of yes before no, always pushing to understand the needs of the community at large and doing what it can to serve those needs by exhausting all avenues wherever possible.

RAINN Reiterates Support of Major Child Protection Bill Renewed By Congress

On Dec. 12, 2022, Congress passed the PROTECT Our Children Act, sending it to President Joe Biden for his signature, and the Rape, Abuse, & Incest National Network (RAINN) can’t overemphasize the importance of this crucial legislation. PROTECT is an acronym that stands for Providing Resources, Officers, and Technology to Eradicate Cyber Threats.

A child is sexually abused every nine minutes, according to the latest government statistics.. RAINN and similar organizations have been founded to help combat this growing trend and provide advocacy and relief for those affected.

“We are immensely grateful to House and Senate leadership for swiftly passing the PROTECT Our Children Act before the end of the 117th Congress,” said Samantha Cadet, director of federal affairs for RAINN. “This legislation authorizes critical funding to the agencies tasked with identifying and rescuing children from sexual abuse and exploitation. There is a growing epidemic of sexual violence against children in the United States — we need authorities on the ground tackling this issue now more than ever before.”

While many of the instances of child sexual abuse go unreported and unrecognized in research and statistics, the nonprofit organization RAINN has indicated that there has recently been an alarming rise in child sexual abuse material. In response to this, the organization has continued to advocate for legislation that will help protect the rights of children affected by these crimes, as well as to produce content that can help provide resources for victims and their families. To this end, RAINN supported the PROTECT Our Children Act of 2022 alongside the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

The impact of this legislation will be felt throughout the community by those who have been victims of sexual abuse crimes. The act is designed to help identify and advocate for the well-being of victims while also apprehending offenders. In detail, the act reauthorized the National Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force Program, extending the program through 2024 to help combat child exploitation. The original legislation was passed in 2008 and authorized a national effort including 61 task forces engaged in both reactive and proactive investigations into child abuse crimes.

Sen. Richard Blumenthal commented on the act’s passing, saying, “Today’s vote is an important step in the fight to protect victims of online child exploitation. With our bipartisan measure, law enforcement will be given the resources needed to investigate these unspeakable crimes and hold criminals accountable. Reauthorization of the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force Program cannot wait.” ICACs, as a result of the legislation, will continue to provide programs and guidance for victims of sexual abuse crimes, educate communities and create awareness of these crimes, and bring criminals to justice across the country. In 2021 alone, the joint task forces arrested over 10,000 perpetrators of online sexual abuse and exploitation of children.

RAINN remains deeply involved in public policy, advocating to help improve the overall criminal justice system to make communities safer. This includes collaboration with the Departments of Justice, Education, and Health and Human Services to help achieve better outcomes and responses to sexual crimes for victims of all ages. RAINN is committed to providing resources that can be life changing and lifesaving to individuals and their families who have been affected by sexual abuse crimes.

Founded in 1994 by president Scott Berkowitz, RAINN operates the National Sexual Assault Hotline at (800) 656-HOPE (online.rainn.org, for online chat) as a resource for victims and their families. Since its inception, RAINN has aided over 4 million individual survivors and their loved ones. The nonprofit also operates hotlines for local communities and corporations, including the Department of Defense, to make it easier for victims to come forward to seek assistance.

In an additional response to the growing trend in sexual abuse cases in children, RAINN recently developed its Lean On Me series, designed to help parents and caregivers navigate conversations with children regarding sexual abuse experiences. The five-episode video series and accompanying guidebook can help educate caregivers, as child victims of sexual abuse crimes often don’t come forward or have the words to describe their experiences. RAINN creates resources like Lean On Me and supports legislation like the PROTECT Our Children Act to help bring social justice and change to a complex and often difficult-to-navigate topic that urgently needs to be addressed nationwide.
