Rochdale-based Advanced Machinery and Productivity Institute (AMPI) leads the way in boosting growth in the UK’s machinery manufacturing sector

Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham accompanied the National Physical Laboratory’s (NPL) CEO Dr Peter Thompson, Mayor of West Yorkshire Tracy Brabin, and Rochdale Council leader Neil Emmott to lead an event at Hopwood Hall College and University Centre in Rochdale on Thursday 9th February, to discuss the region’s ambitions.

At the event, hosted by the Rochdale-based Advanced Machinery and Productivity Institute (AMPI), the Mayors shared their shared vision for a thriving advanced manufacturing industry spanning the M62 corridor and explored the role of advanced machinery in driving this success.

The North of England has an active and high concentration of industrial expertise in the design, development and manufacture of complex machinery. This machinery is used in a wide range of industries to manufacture products such as pharmaceuticals, food and drink, and automotive components.

The ambitions of the Advanced Machinery and Productivity Institute, with its national remit, is to build on the strengths of the region. NPL, the UK’s National Metrology Institute, is currently leading AMPI’s first innovation programme, the 5-year UKRI funded Strength in Places Fund initiative, which is proactively supporting advanced machinery innovators across West Yorkshire and Greater Manchester. AMPI will grow the UK’s advanced manufacturing machinery market to £2bn over 10 years, support machinery developers in their R&D and upskill staff.

The support provided to local SMEs, through the Institute’s Innovation for Machinery (I4M) programme, enables innovation and increases the adoption of new machinery and robotics through UK equipment manufacturers.

NPL has a long history of utilising its expertise in metrology to find solutions to some of the challenges facing society today. At the event Dr Peter Thompson announced further NPL funding to enable UK industry to innovate, under a new programme, Measurement for Business. There was also a panel discussion which included Julia Heap, CE and Principal at Hopwood Hall College and University Centre, Paul Simkiss, MD Simkiss Controls, Mandy Ridyard, Produmax, Gareth Edwards, AMPI, where they talked about their ambitions for the region.

Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham said, “If you go back a century this area was the powerhouse of the world – the first home of advanced manufacturing and machinery. We led the world and I see no reason why we can’t do exactly the same again. This is the best opportunity we will get to reindustrialise the North of England, but in a good way, a clean way that brings prosperity in the future. If we’re going to rise to that challenge, it will require us to innovate, to bring forward new materials and ways of making things.

Mayor of West Yorkshire Tracy Brabin said, “We have a thriving manufacturing sector in West Yorkshire, which is only going to be made stronger by working with partners within the industry.

It has been fantastic to discuss our shared visions as we continue our work levelling up across the North, leading the way in manufacturing and providing opportunities for businesses. I am excited to see projects go from strength to strength in the coming years for the benefit of machinery manufacturers across our regions.”

NPL CEO Dr Peter Thompson FREng said, “We are delighted to use our position as a national laboratory to lead initiatives and programmes, which are proactively supporting advanced machinery innovators across West Yorkshire and Greater Manchester. I hope that NPL’s metrology expertise can once again provide the footing for those innovating to do so with success.”

“I see Atom Valley as being right at the heart of that vision. If we go first, we will bring forward the new technologies and develop our skills base. It will be built by a network of organisations and institutions like AMPI that are ready to go faster – that’s how the North of England rises again.”

Councillor Neil Emmott, Leader of Rochdale Borough Council, said, “In our borough, cooperation is what we do best. By bringing together the very best of the manufacturing community and educational partners, both local, regional and national, the AMPI will create hundreds of highly skilled, highly paid jobs on our doorstep.

“This is an unrivalled opportunity for our residents to be part of and I’m really proud of what’s been achieved so far. The importance of this incredible project cannot be overestimated. By bringing major organisations together in this way to pool the best skills, talent and resources from across the country, we have the power to create cutting edge technology, which will transform the manufacturing industry in a way that will have an impact far beyond our borough’s borders.”

eBay has awarded almost £30,000 to 17 businesses across the North West, made up of cash grants of up to £5,000 and support packages worth £1,200 each.

The eBay Business Roadshow invites small businesses across the country to apply for grants and packages to support with growing their online shops. In addition to the grants, winning small businesses benefit from a full year of 1-2-1 mentoring with an eBay ambassador to support their unique growth journey.

The Roadshow visited the North West to offer guidance and training on starting a business with eBay, sustainable basics for small businesses as well as access to the regional support available in the area.

Successful applicants in the North West sell a range of pre-loved items including vintage clothing, jewellery, high quality packaging, wallpaper and DIY products, as well as clutches for cars.

Nine roadshows have been held across the country so far with thousands of small businesses attending.

A panel of expert judges with representatives from the Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce and Small Business Britain attended the roadshow event in Salford. They considered the entrepreneurs’ need for funds, how they plan to use the money, and whether the funds would have a positive social impact through sustainable business practices or support for the local community.

Oldham-based Hirst Footwear was one of the recipients of a grant worth £2,000. Its large brick-and-mortar Footwear and Workwear store is 40 years old, owned and run by Vicky Dean and her family, and is well known in its local area of Royton. The heritage brand’s online journey began on eBay 12 years ago, and since then Vicky has helped to scale the business, which has launched two of its own websites. The judges recognised her entrepreneurial vision and passion for making the customer service as smooth as possible.

Sarah Bryant, Director of Small Businesses at eBay UK, said: “Small businesses have been forced to navigate a never-ending list of challenges in the past couple of years. We’re committed to using the power of our platform in a way that supports our sellers and nurtures individual business growth, despite these challenges. And we acknowledge the power that funding and investing in these sellers has to foster such growth.

“We’re pleased to celebrate the 10 North West entrepreneurs that will receive grants and support packages to enable further business growth in the months to come. Each business has an exceptional story, and we look forward to witnessing how each business benefits from the added support. Congratulations to all our winners!”

Vicky Dean, from Hirst Footwear, said: “As for most small businesses in the region, we’ve overcome challenges over the last few years, and are proud to have reached a strong position in planning our future growth. With the continued support and funding from eBay, we’ll be able to broaden our online offering and drive our vision for development over the coming months. We look forward to building on the fantastic working relationship we already have with the platform.”

The next events will be held in Bristol on 12th January, Belfast on 2nd February and Cardiff on 2nd March 2023.

Greater Manchester credit unions come together to launch cost of living loan

Credit unions across Greater Manchester have united in response to the continuing affordability crisis due to rising household costs.

The Sound Pound consortium has unveiled a new loan which has been backed by the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) and was launched on 15th February by the Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham.

The Sound Pound loan provides a safe solution for local people who are experiencing squeezed finances due to rising household costs. The city region is unique as it is currently the only consortium of credit unions in the UK which has launched a loan product in response to the cost-of-living crisis.

According to Greater Manchester Residents Survey, a quarter (24%) of Greater Manchester residents are seeking information or support for the first time, reinforcing how the cost of living crisis is bringing financial concerns to those not traditionally experiencing them.

With deep roots in the communities they serve, credit unions provide a positive and safe solution to short-term credit pressures as they encourage saving alongside loan repayments and always act in the customer’s best interests for the long term.

Any money made by a credit union is invested back into the running of the credit union and the local area allowing them to offer fair rates to all their customers.

The new Sound Pound loan is available for any amount between £200 and £1000 and is open to anyone with squeezed finances that are new to Credit Unions.

Sheenagh Young, chair of Sound Pound and CEO of South Manchester Credit Union, said: “With the ongoing cost of living crisis, we know there are many people living in our communities who usually get by ok but are now experiencing a real squeeze and are unsure where to turn for help.

“As credit unions, we can help and our new Sound Pound loan is our response to help local people get back on track and avoid any long term impacts of inflation and rising household costs.

“Credit unions have existed in local communities across the UK for over 50 years and responsible lending is in our DNA. We work with individuals to help them through challenging times so that they can grow their financial resilience and kickstart savings habits for the long term, whatever their income level.”

Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester, said: “Credit Unions have a key role to play in the financial crisis that we all now face. I’m delighted to see them come together across Greater Manchester to provide alocal and ethical alternative to the high-interest payday loan companies and loan sharks.

“Credit Unions represent a positive, safe solution to short term credit pressures.

“Sound Pound is a fantastic initiative that shows Greater Manchester is doing things differently and coming together to support each other.”

All eight Greater Manchester community credit unions have signed up to the initiative, including Cash Box Credit Union (Tameside), Hoot Credit Union (Bolton), Manchester Credit Union, Oldham Credit Union, Salford Credit Union, South Manchester Credit Union, Stockport Credit Union, and Unify Credit Union (Wigan).

Credit Unions are member-owned, not-for-profit financial co-operatives and all deposits are covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme.

Bury Business Supports Men with Incontinence

New research released reveals the alarming truth about the widespread prevalence of male urinary incontinence across Manchester, and the taboo causing silent suffering in men.

The report, Binning the taboo: disposing with dignity, reveals that nearly half (45%) of the men surveyed in Manchester, of all ages, have experienced symptoms associated with urinary incontinence. This is leaving all (100%) anxious to leave the house.

Co-authored by Prostate Cancer UK and phsGroup, it highlights how the new figures vastly exceed previous estimates about the prevalence ofurinary incontinence, which is anunder-researched problem.

Former studies estimated that onein 25 men over 40 will experience urinary incontinence in the UK every year, butthe comprehensive study – with a combined UK-wide audience of 4750 people including 2,000 general consumers, 2,000 men, 500 men living with urinary incontinence and 250 partners of men living with incontinence– paints a far bleaker picture and reveals the true extent of a condition impacting hundreds of thousands of lives. Furthermore, the new results show that almost one in five men (18%) in Manchester experience symptoms as early as 18-25 years of age, contradicting the assumption that the condition is only experienced by older adults.

The new data also shows how society’s awareness of prevalent men’s health issues is dangerously at odds with the reality. More than half of people from Manchester (57%) do not think men commonly experience urinary incontinence, despite hundreds of thousands dealing with the condition each year. Similarly, less than a third of people (30%) from Manchester knew that prostate cancer treatment can cause urinary incontinence in men, despite the fact that as many as one in two (60%) men who have their prostate removed (radical prostatectomy) may experience it.

One in eight men will get prostate cancer, rising to one in four for Black men. For the over 475,000 men living with or after prostate cancer in the UK, many will experience urinary incontinence as a side effect of treatment for the disease. Each year in England, more than 47,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer and more than 10,000 die from it – one man, every hour. More than 410,000 men are living with and after prostate cancer in England.

Of the men in Manchester who were asked about the challenges they face when using public washroom facilities:

·      almost a third (29%) had found it hard locating a hygiene bin in a public toilet to throw away used incontinence pants and pads

·      100% feel anxious leaving home due to a lack of facilities

·      100% leave home less often, contributing to feelings of social isolation.

As a result, men are resorting to desperate strategies to overcome the near certainty that they will be unable to find somewhere appropriate to throw away used products after leaving home. These include taking a bag out with them that they can empty when back home (33%), asking their partner to keep them in their handbag (13%) or wearing the pads longer than advised (8%), which can cause further health risks. Almost two in five (38%) acknowledged that they have resorted to flushing them in the toilet.

Today, Prostate Cancer UK, thelargest men’s health charity in the UK, and the country’s leading hygiene services provider, phsGroup, launch the campaign, ‘Dispose with Dignity’. The campaign will tackle the taboo surrounding male incontinence, backed up by solid measures to ensure thatmen have proper access to essential facilities and products that will improve their quality of life, including changing HSE guidance to make it mandatory for at least one male incontinence bin to be present in public washrooms.

Nick Ridgman, head of health information and clinical support at Prostate Cancer UK, commented: “Incontinence affects hundreds of thousands of men across the country and is a frequent side effect of treatment for the most common cancer in men. Yet the research released today showcases a woeful lack of understanding and conversation that is impacting men’s mental and physical health, and has resulted in men not having the facilities they need to live life to the full. Together withphs Group, our “Dispose with Dignity” campaign will tackle that taboo, ensuring political decision-makers hear the voices of men across the country who want change. We look forward to working with phs Group to build a future where men’s lives are not limited by incontinence.”

A new, dedicated male incontinence bin has been designed byphs Group and Prostate Cancer UK, solving the dilemma men encounter in washrooms up and down the country, with several companies already pledging to provide them to their customers and staff. These include Moto service stations, the first ofphs’ customers to sign up to receive the bins, and Garic, a sustainable solutions provider to the construction industry with headquarters in Bury, Lancs.

Nick Tatum, chief customer officer at Moto, said:“Moto strive to provide a service that is inclusive of all and our partnership withphs will help us to achieve this. We want the very best for all of our customers and want to provide them with the dignity they deserve. We’re also incredibly proud of our colleagues and their commitment to providing an outstanding service, with zero tolerance for discrimination, to all of our customers.”

Neil Page, sales director at Garic, said: “We were blown away by the careful and considered approach phs has taken to this initiative and we’re really excited to be working in an exclusive construction partnership to support both our own colleagues and our customers. When you’re coming to work, you want to feel supported, looked after, and that your employer has your best interests at heart. So that’s why it’s important for us to provide dignity to those who need it, in a discreet way, behind the cubicle door in private.”

With over 120,000 customers in 300,000 locations, phshas a 60-year heritage in supporting businesses and organisations, and as such is uniquely placed to make an impact on the lives of men experiencing urinary incontinence. The campaign follows years of working to raise awareness of issues surrounding another taboo subject, period inequality.

Matt Brabin, chief executive officer of phs Group, added: “We hope this campaign isa catalyst for change, because it is past time that this conversation takes place. As a business, we are proud to be unafraid to shine a light on issues others might shy away from, and we are truly passionate aboutbreaking down barriers for men, so that they can access the basic hygiene facilities they need to live with dignity, as they should after receiving life-saving prostate cancer treatment.”

Prostate Cancer UK is also workingin collaboration with theAPPG for Bladder and Bowel Continence Care  to support their ‘Boys Need Bins’ national initiative, in conjunction withBladder Health UK ,British Toilet Association,International Longevity Centre,Men’s Health Forum,Tackle Prostate Cancer and theTruckers Consortium.  The campaign similarly aims to make a legislative change, calling for a dedicated incontinence bin in male toilets to give men the dignity of easy, hygienic and discreet disposal of incontinence pants and pads, stoma bags, wipes and other personal care products. To get the issue on the political agenda across the UK, Prostate Cancer UK is calling for men and those who love them to “make a change in under a minute” and send a pre-written letter to their local MP or political representative today calling for action. How Regular Payroll Can Help Boost Your Credit Score

0

A solid credit score is an important part of your finances, which is why people are always looking for ways to boost it. This has led to individuals wondering if steady income can positively affect their score.

Regular pay does not directly affect your credit score; however, it does have an indirect impact on whether or not it increases.

Can Regular Payroll Help Boost Your Credit Score?

Your credit reports do not contain your income because it is not factored into any credit scoring systems. Therefore, your pay cannot affect your credit score directly. However, having a regular payroll can indirectly boost your credit score.

There are several ways to maintain or elevate your credit score, and they all revolve around your ability to pay off bills on time. A steady income allows you to make on-time, payments, get your finances in order, and use your credit wisely, which in turn, increases or stabilizes your score.

Hence, without a regular payroll to help you pay off these obligations, you will fall behind or pile up debt, hurting your credit score.

That said, even though your income does not have a direct impact on your credit score, it does affect your ability to get approved for loans or credit.

How Your Income Affects Your Credit Limit

Your income plays a huge role in determining your eligibility and credit limit. This is because your annual income affects your debt-to-income (DTI) ratio (the percentage of your gross monthly income that you spend on your monthly debts).

Your DTI is a factor credit card companies and lenders consider when deciding on your creditworthiness.

Essentially, if your DTI is low and your income is high, then you will have access to a higher credit limit, which might positively affect your credit utilization ratio.

On the other hand, if you have a high DTI ratio and your income is low, then the odds are your credit limit will be low. This is because this information shows that you have a high amount of debt with a low income. So, it proves that you might find it challenging to pay off your monthly debt.

Generally, if your DTI ratio is higher than 43%, you might struggle to get approval. Several lenders require your DTI to be 36% or below.

How to Increase Your Credit Score

It is vital to have a good credit score because, without it, you will not be able to get certain benefits or decent loan offers except for CreditNinja Loans or loans from similar platforms.

There are various tips and tricks to help you achieve your ideal credit scores. Following them can help you avoid financial anxiety. Here are some of these tips.

Make On-time Bill Payments

Paying your bills on time is a surefire way to boost your credit score. Also, it is essential in maintaining your current score because it is the largest factor in credit scoring systems.

If you constantly pay your bills late, no amount of effort or strategy could improve your score. Furthermore, your late payments might reflect on your credit reports for seven years and six months.

Leave Old Accounts and Handle Delinquent Ones

Your credit score has an age-of-credit section that monitors how old your credit accounts are. Typically, the older your credit accounts, the more appealing you are to lenders. So, it is best not to close old credit accounts, even the ones you are no longer using.

Granted, the credit history of the accounts will still show up on your credit report. However, closing them when you have a balance on other accounts means your available credit will be lower and your credit utilization will be higher. Sadly, all these could lead to a lower credit score.

Furthermore, ensure to address delinquent accounts by resolving them. For instance, if you have a credit account where you missed a couple of payments, you should try and pay what you missed, then come up with a plan for future payments.

This action will not remove late payments from your credit history, but it will positively affect your payment history in the future.

Address Any Credit Report errors

A single error on any of your credit reports could negatively affect your score. Fortunately, disputing these errors can help to boost your credit swiftly.

All three major credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion) offer one free report every 12 months, so you can easily use them to check. You can visit AnnualCreditReport.com and request your report.

After getting the report, you should check for errors like payments that were wrongly marked as late or if your report contains another individual’s credit activity. When you find these errors, you can dispute them.

Conclusion

Your regular payroll does not appear in your credit reports. Hence, it cannot impact your credit score.

That said, it can indirectly influence it. This is because, without your regular salary, you cannot keep up with bill payments, which could lead to late payments and excess debt.

Thus, getting paid monthly allows you to stay ahead of your bill and possibly boost your credit score.

Do Retail Businesses Still Need a Physical Outlet?

0

Online shopping has exploded recently in both its popularity with shoppers and prevalence among retail businesses.

The recent pandemic was a factor of course. Many traditional retail outlets moved to a digital model in an effort to continue sales during the long periods of lockdown. However, e-commerce was rising in popularity well before this, evidenced by the years of success achieved by online retail giants such as Amazon. In fact, e-commerce is now so popular that it accounted for 20% of global retail sales in 2022.

With the world increasingly embracing digital living, many retail businesses are asking themselves if there are still substantial benefits to having a high-street shop. Gain clarity on the changing sales landscape with this guide to the pros and cons of physical outlets for retail businesses.

Pros of having a high-street shop

You can offer more services

While online shopping is quick and convenient for customers, it may leave your business with a limited offering. Service-based retailers such as beauty salons could benefit hugely from maintaining their physical space.

Even if some of these treatments can be moved to a mobile model, like home hairdressers, you will be able to offer more complex services in-store. These specialised services are also more likely to be seen as worthy of investment by your clientele.

Customers can try before they buy

One of the major disadvantages of online shopping from a consumer perspective is that you are unable to try out products before you commit to buying them. While this has proved to be a minor obstacle for most goods such as clothing, being able to physically experience products before purchasing can be a key stage in sales conversions – particularly for high-ticket items.

Businesses selling higher-priced items that are valuable to consumers will find having a retail space essential to proving product quality. Those selling homeware, appliances, and vehicles all fall under this category.

More marketing options

Online retailers are naturally limited to digital marketing. While this is a key component of modern advertising, there is still much to be said for face-to-face marketing.

For example, appealing to the senses beyond just the visual can have a dramatic effect on increasing sales. Having a store where customers can explore your offering through smell, touch, and taste as well as sight is guaranteed to boost sales and attract consistent consumer footfall.

Cons of having a high-street shop

Potentially high running costs

Especially given the current cost-of-living crisis driven by inflation and rising fuel prices, having a physical space requires significant spending. Moving to mobile operations negates the need for renting retail space and managing bills. There will still be outgoings to factor in such as transport costs, but you can keep these in control by giving employees used cars from a local provider and operating only within your local community.

Less convenient for consumers

One of the major benefits of online shopping is how easy it makes life for the consumer. Without moving, you can browse, compare, and purchase essential products and arrange for them to be delivered straight to your door.

It is hard for independent shops to compete with this convenience. Business owners should definitely introduce an element of online sales into their operation, even if they primarily function as a physical store. This gives customers the best of both worlds and will stop the business falling behind.

While retail businesses should definitely introduce an element of e-commerce into their sales model, it seems that there are still many benefits to running a physical outlet. This is supported by the fact that a number of UK high street shops are currently thriving despite an incredibly tough period.

Smart Ways to Use Your Inheritance

0

Receiving inheritance money is a bittersweet thing. Nothing can quite outpace the grief you feel in losing a loved one, but the things they leave you can have long-term and lasting impacts on your life for time to come. Indeed, over a third of us that anticipate an inheritance find ourselves needing the money for one reason or another. But what might those reasons, be, and how might you smartly use your inheritance otherwise?

Paying Down Debt Obligations

Not many of us are without our debts, be they in the form of overdrafts, credit cards or even an outstanding mortgage balance. Debts of any kind can be deleterious to your long-term financial security, and should be seen as high-priority expenditures even outside the realms of receiving an inheritance.

However, if you are due to receive money from a loved one’s estate, you could be in a position to significantly reduce these obligations, and cut out a degree of expense afforded to interest repayments in the process. Probate loans are useful in this regard, wherein incoming inheritance money can be advanced before probate is granted and debts cleared much sooner as a result.

Pension

If you are lucky enough to be clear of any major debts, your inheritance money can still be used shrewdly to secure yourself financially. Your pension is a vital aspect of your financial health, protecting as it does the affordability of later life. Where possible, you should be adding as much to your pension as possible; your inheritance could be an opportunity to pay a significant sum into your pension and reap the rewards later.

Quality-of-Life Improvements

Of course, none of the above options are particularly thrilling ones when it comes to money management. While the circumstances of your inheritance are anything but joyful, the money you receive needn’t inherit that same sombreness. Indeed, money is there for spending – and the sum you receive from your loved one could be put towards something that would tangibly improve your life in the short term.

For many people, this might present as long-postponed renovation works on the home. If the money is ample enough to cover it, you could extend your home – improving its overall market value as well as giving you additional living space to enjoy.

Investing

Lastly, there are more direct and active ways in which you can invest the money you receive. If your inheritance sum is particularly large, investments might be your best bet – not only to grow your savings meaningfully, but also to protect the value of your inheritance against economic factors like inflation.

Investment is inherently risky, though, no matter how you engage with it. Placing some of your inheritance money in a stocks and shares ISA for investment in a global fund would be the least risky investment option, but more involved attempts to build a stock portfolio could also generate some more immediate returns.

How to improve your productivity for work

0

Did you know the average Briton spends around 11 hours a week procrastinating? Or to put it more startlingly, 24 days a year!

In fact, the writing of this article was delayed by putting on the kettle, fussing with needy dogs, and binge-watching Netflix.

Anyway, no more digressing – the point is, it is easy to lose focus and consequently waste time putting off tasks, and this is also true in the workplace.

But there are ways to improve your productivity at work.

Dedicate a space

Whether you work in an office or you’re based at home you need a space that will limit distractions and help you to stay focused on what it is you’re meant to be doing.

Things like plants will bring freshness to your working area, but also consider finding a home for your gadgets such as phones and tablets so you aren’t tempted to scroll when you’re supposed to be working.

Fitted office furniture can add functionality to your space, and try to keep your space as clean and organised as possible as a lack of clutter on the desk will also result in a lack of clutter in your mind.

Reduce multitasking

The idea of completing several things at once may seem enticing and give us the idea that our workload will reduce quicker.

But the reality is that multitasking will only reduce the quality of your work and wind up taking longer to complete individual tasks.

To avoid multitasking try turning off your e-mail notifications, switching off your phone or hiding it somewhere out of reach, make a to-do list and work through it one by one, and focus on the tasks that will take longer to complete.

Set boundaries

According to the World Health Organisation, around one in seven people contend with stress in the workplace.

One way to help clear the mind and keep you focused on the here and now is by creating clear, set boundaries that deter you from putting off tasks and avoid the need to come back later, perhaps even when the working day is done.

Set boundaries in terms of the time it will take to complete a task, and also with the remit of the job you are contracted to do.

Set goals

Start your day right by creating small and measurable goals that can help keep you motivated throughout the working day as once you’ve ticked one off you’ll want to move on to the next.

It is advisable to focus on small and actionable goals, for instance, read a certain amount of e-mails by a set time, and find motivations that will keep you on track.

Make sure that the goals are achievable, time-focused, and measured, and more importantly celebrate any goals you achieve in the day.
