UK Pay Growth Speeds up as Unemployment Rate Rises

0

The UK unemployment conditions are a headache to the modern economic market. The unemployment rate in the UK ticked up simultaneously with the total pay growth.

Apart from that, the public pay growth rose to a level which is signifying the largest amount since 2005. Focusing on the UK unemployment rate, from December 2022 to February 2023, a growth of 0.1% is seen. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) showed a 3.8% unemployment rate in that particular quarter.

Well, this data is driven by the people who have been unemployed for more than six months.

However, the total pay is also increasing simultaneously with the growing unemployment rate in the UK. The total pay grew from an annual rate of 5.7% to 5.9% within three months to February 2023.

Well, excluding bonuses, the pay growth rose to 6.7%, which is a record growth compared to 2001 (excluding the coronavirus pandemic).

Comparing the public and private sector pay growth is necessary to provide the appropriate data. Considering the public sector pay growth from December to February, a significant 5.3% was seen. Whereas in the private sector, the pay growth strikes at 6.9%.

Notably, the public sector pay growth is the highest pay growth in the public sector since 2005 (excluding the coronavirus pandemic).

The UK inflation rate jumped to 10.4%, which is the main reason why increased pay is falling across. Eaten up by inflation, non-alcoholic drinks and food rose by 18% in February 2023, which is the latest since 1977.

According to the economist at PwC UK, Divya Sridhar, Inflation-adjusted total pay is signifying a 3% down in the three months to February. It is a sharp decline in earnings.

Moreover, the ONS economic statistics director, Darren Morgan, stated that the decreasing number of people not working nor looking for jobs also signifies the increasing number of people with active jobs or actively searching for jobs. In turn, job vacancies are again in danger.

In the meantime, pay to the employees continues to show down as the prices are getting higher compared to the growth of pay. In real terms, the gap in pay between the public and private sectors is getting narrowed.

However, strikes are becoming a more popular practice in the UK right now. So, once again, the education sector is in danger due to these disputes.

The labour market of the nation is at a turning point.

Yes! The pay rate is high this time, but people of the UK also need to cope with rising interest rates, sticky inflation, slowing growth, and increased wages in difficult business conditions for employers.

Employers are constantly trying to showcase their job opportunities in the market with proper job description to hold the nerve of the enthusiasts.

The strikes of teachers, and civil servants, among other reasons, are the prominent ones behind the failure of the UK economy during February 2023. According to the ONS, over 350 strikes were held in just February.

This is not good news for the economic market of the UK. The labour dispute is a concern to almost 348,000 working days lost in February 2023. This was a rise from 210,000 in January 2023.

However, the UK Chancellor Jeremy Hunt considered this a big issue and acknowledged the issue with rising prices and higher unemployment rates. So, their top priority is to try and halve inflation this year.

Latest St Helens town centre transformation plans revealed: heritage, children and families and ambition at their heart

0

Art and design ideas that reflect the proud heritage, buildings and features to be enjoyed by children and families, and high ambitions for the future are at the heart of plans to revitalise St Helens own centre, according to the team behind the proposals.

St Helens Borough Council and its project partner The English Cities Fund (ECF) are committed to transforming the town centre, with a genuine sense of place and pride restored.

Jon Matthews Architects has created the masterplan and detailed design of the three central areas in proposals for the first phase of regeneration, which members of the public can view as part of a new community consultation starting this week.

They are based around a stunning new market hall that will feature approximately 23 stalls, food and beverage outlets, a bar and performance area, along with a range of other amenities to encourage and cater for visitors through the daytime and evenings. Outside the market hall will be space for play and child-focused street furniture.

The market hall will be flanked by a mixed-use area set around a 150-bedroom hotel, 64 homes and 10,915 sq ft modern retail space, along with a new 49,670 sq ft sustainable office building.

The design of each of the new buildings has drawn inspiration from St Helens’ past, with architectural glass, for instance, a key feature within the market mall. Art installations that celebrate the town’s history, ingenuity, and individuality will also feature in recessed sections of the ground floor exterior wall of the hotel.

The designs for the facades of the new buildings also reference St Helens architectural traditions. Sam Ainsley, a project architect at Jon Matthews Architects, said: “There is a strong emphasis on radiating local character. For each of the buildings, we’ve looked at detail from existing buildings and distilled it.”

Councillor David Baines, leader of St Helens Borough Council, said: “This is an extremely exciting time for our borough with major regeneration projects at various stages of development, from new schools already delivered and Glass Futures nearing completion, to the Parkside redevelopment and much, much more.

“Our town centres in St Helens and Earlestown are key to our borough and of huge importance to local people. Their rejuvenation is critical to our borough’s future, and I am delighted to see our once in a lifetime plans for St Helens reach the next stage of the process.

“The plans are significant and we want to hear from as many residents and businesses as possible to help us shape the proposals.

“We are totally focussed on providing the right conditions that will revitalise the town centre. With our focus on heritage, children and families, and our high ambitions for the future, we want to support the hundreds of local independent businesses already operating there and the growth of new ones, provide the right infrastructure, and deliver quality spaces and places that local people of all ages can enjoy.”

Stuart Rogers, project director at ECF, said: “We’re looking forward to showcasing the thinking and detail that has gone into preparing for the next stage of this unique project. Everyone involved is committed to engaging with the community and setting the town on a path that will create a positive legacy to benefit people for generations to come.”

He added that while the challenges facing St Helens may not be unique – towns centres everywhere have suffered because of changing shopping habits – St Helens does have many strengths to build upon and some unique issues to address.

“There are excellent transport links, and the right sense of arrival and mix of experiential amenities that people need will attract people back into the centre. Local people have also told us that the existing large scale and monolithic indoor shopping precincts have become a barrier to getting around the town. Our exciting proposals will restore the historical street pattern in places and help local residents, businesses and visitors alike with wayfinding.”

People are invited to have their say on the St Helens town centre proposals across a series of consultation events taking place this month. Members of the project team, including the architects, will be on hand to talk through the plans and answer questions from the community.

The first events have been confirmed and others will be confirmed shortly, with details posted on St Helens’ council social media accounts and via the consultation website www.sthelenstowncentre.co.uk where members of the community can also view the plans and submit feedback. The consultation will close Monday 12 June 2023.

The confirmed dates so far include:

  • Tuesday 23rd May (11am – 4pm) – 51 Church Street, St Helens Town Centre
  • Wednesday 24th May (11am – 4pm) – 51 Church Street, St Helens Town Centre
  • Thursday 25th May (11am – 4pm) – 51 Church Street, St Helens Town Centre
  • Friday 26th May (11am – 4pm) – 51 Church Street, St Helens Town Centre
  • Saturday 27th May (10am – 3pm) – 51 Church Street, St Helens Town Centre

St Helens Borough Council is working on a 20-year regeneration plan for the area with the ECF – a national development partnership between nationwide placemaker, Muse Places, Legal and General and Homes England.

The Project Team includes: Jon Matthews Architects as Architect; Planit as Landscape Architects; Hilson Moran as Mechanical and Electrical Engineers; Heyne Tillet Steel as Civil and Structural Engineers; CBRE as Planning Consultant; Cundall as Sustainability Consultant; WSP as Highways Engineer; Design Fire Consultants as Fire Engineers; Arcadis as Project Manager; Faithful+Gould as Cost Consultant.

Earlestown has its own dedicated focus within the wider strategy, with an initial focus on updating the town’s market square and town hall, a project boosted by the award of £20 million last year from the government’s Levelling Up Fund.

Dr. Kevin Sands on Hollywood Teeth Secrets for Awards Season

0

As Hollywood awards season quickly approaches, many celebrities are gearing up for the potential red carpet of fortune and fame. One inevitable aspect of such glamor is looking your best—which includes a bright and uniformly white smile! With that in mind, we’re excited to chat with world-renowned cosmetic dentist Kevin B. Sands, DDS, who has crafted award-winning smiles beloved by A-listers all over Los Angeles.

Keep reading to discover what it takes to have star power twinkle from your grin—because everyone deserves to shine during awards season (& beyond).

Teeth Whitening for the Awards Season

During awards season, the importance of teeth whitening for celebrities cannot be overstated. As they step onto the red carpet and face the intense scrutiny of the cameras, a flawless smile becomes an indispensable asset. Teeth whitening treatments help celebrities achieve a captivating, radiant smile that enhances their overall appearance.

These treatments can take various forms, including professional dental procedures performed by experienced dentists. These often involve the application of a potent bleaching agent combined with light or laser activation.

Whitening treatments conducted in a dental office, such as laser whitening, offer celebrities a fast and effective solution to achieve a stunning smile. Laser whitening is a popular in-office procedure that involves the application of a powerful bleaching gel on the teeth. The gel is activated by a specialized laser or light source, which helps accelerate the whitening process.

The dentist carefully protects the gums and applies the gel evenly to the teeth. The laser or light is then directed onto the gel, triggering a chemical reaction that breaks down stains and discoloration. This procedure typically takes about an hour and can significantly lighten the teeth by several shades in a single visit. Laser whitening is a preferred choice for celebrities due to its immediate results, minimal discomfort, and the expertise of dental professionals, ensuring a safe and customized treatment. The outcome is a dazzling, camera-ready smile that exudes confidence and charm on the red carpet.

However, Dr. Sands is especially a fan of Zoom Whitening. “In-office Zoom Whitening is the fastest and best way to get big results in a short amount of time,” says Sands. Even if you might have sensitive teeth, there are no real downsides since each treatment is tailored to the patient’s mouth and measures are taken to protect your gums and skin.

Additionally, celebrities may opt for take-home whitening kits, which include custom-made trays and professional-grade whitening gel to be worn for designated periods. Teeth whitening strips and natural remedies are also popular choices; for those in a time pinch, these can be just the thing. “Crest WhiteStrips are the best option,” says Sands. Don’t bother with lip glosses that promise a whitening effect—”it’s just a gimmick.”

Regardless of the method chosen, the goal is to achieve a bright, luminous smile that exudes confidence and leaves a lasting impression on the audience and industry professionals alike.

Veneer Maintenance for the Award Season

Veneer maintenance holds tremendous importance for celebrities during awards season, as these thin, customized shells of porcelain or composite resin play a significant role in creating the perfect red-carpet smile. Veneers not only enhance the appearance of teeth but also provide a long-lasting solution for achieving a flawless, bright smile. While veneers are resistant to staining, regular maintenance and teeth whitening treatments are essential to maintain their pristine appearance.

“A veneer is just basically a cover that goes on the tooth, like an acrylic nail,” explained Dr. Kevin Sands. “If you’re just doing healthy teeth, you just have to take a thin layer off [the tooth], a couple of millimeters, like a contact lens.”

Teeth whitening treatments for veneers typically involve professional dental cleanings, non-abrasive whitening toothpaste, and occasional touch-ups using specialized whitening agents. Dentists carefully monitor the color and condition of the veneers, ensuring that any discoloration or staining is promptly addressed.

“Even the best veneers are not a permanent solution,” said Dr. Kevin Sands. “While high-quality veneers can last up to 15 years, they will eventually have to be redone. And veneers, like real teeth, need to be maintained. Veneers can become darkened by coffee and red wine and need to be whitened.”

By diligently maintaining their veneers through appropriate whitening treatments, celebrities can confidently flaunt their impeccable smiles during awards season, leaving a lasting impression on fans and industry professionals.

Ultimately, awards season is demanding and celebrities have to make sure they’re looking their best no matter the cost. While most of us may not be candidates for veneer alterations, teeth whitening can be done right at our dentist’s office or in-home with specialized kits. Just like celebrities, we all want to look our best when it’s time to dress up and hit the red carpet. With the help of professionals like Dr. Sands and preventive dental care, we can rest easy knowing that our smiles will help us shine like stars.

Leading London Private Clinic Reports Huge Year-On-Year Increase in First-Time Users of Private Blood Test Service

Walk-in Clinic, a leading Central London private clinic, has reported a 58% year-on-year rise in first-time users of its private blood test and screening services, particularly in preventative screening or routine monitoring.

Walk-In Clinic is a private medical centre offering a variety of health services such as private and urgent GP appointments, treatment for men’s and women’s issues, sexual health services and a wide range of testing and screening options.

The clinic has provided private blood testing and GP services since 1998 but notes that the interest in routine blood tests has grown exponentially since the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr Enam Abood, Founder of Walk-In Clinic, commented, “Over the last year, we have supported over 6,000 patients with their blood tests, all of whom can self-refer and whose results are safety-netted by our clinicians. Especially since the pandemic, it’s been vital to find ways to empower people to take control of their health and monitor their conditions without the burden of obtaining a GP referral. People are often the experts of their own condition, and it’s important that the medical field adapts to provide support where it is needed but to remove the obstacles in the way of patients monitoring their own health.”

One of the key areas of growth was the demand for hormone testing of various kinds, such as fertility, menopause, erectile dysfunction and, most commonly, tiredness.

Dr Abood commented, “Since COVID-19 started, people have been presenting with tiredness as a very common symptom. It’s unshakeable even with good sleep. Research has shown a direct link between long COVID and reactivation of Epstein Barr Virus, the virus responsible for glandular fever. When we are stressed or our immunity is low, this can take hold causing severe fatigue, body ache and more. There is also a link with other hormonal imbalances, thyroid issues and diabetes, so hormone testing has played an important role in understanding underlying causes of these symptoms.”

The growth in preventative health screening is an unsurprising consequence of a population becoming more health aware. A survey by Public Health England found that 7 in 10 adults in the UK are motivated to live healthier lifestyles due to Covid. The survey uncovered that around 6 million people aged 40 to 60 planned on taking measures like eating healthier, losing weight and getting more exercise.

Alya Shakir, Managing Director of Walk-in Clinic, commented, “The increased demand is surprisingly not primarily driven by issues obtaining testing on the NHS but by an increasingly health-conscious and informed population, taking their health into their own hands and focussing more on preventative screening.”

Dr Abood explained, “There are many diseases which simply do not show any symptoms until they are serious and these can be life-threatening and/or greatly impact quality of life. We can’t know we have high cholesterol, putting us at risk of heart attack or stroke, without testing. Diseases like diabetes often do not show any symptoms until they’ve taken hold and as type II diabetes can be reversed the earlier it is detected, monitoring your levels is the only way to know you need to make some lifestyle adjustments or get some medical support.”

Cervical Cancer Survivor who May Never Conceive Naturally After 3 Year Delayed Diagnoses Awarded £65,000 in Damages Thanks to Manchester Firm

0

A young woman from Bedfordshire, who tragically had her cervix removed in order to save her life after her cancer was missed during a routine smear test in 2015, has been awarded £65,000 in damages. Despite this, she still faces the fear that she may never conveive children naturally in her life.

‘Heartbroken’ Lauren Young, from Stotfold, feels that her chances of being a mum have been drastically cut, as a result of failure to diagnose the cancer sooner by medical professionals.

The 33-year-old, who is calling for more awareness of the disease, is now having to use her settlement money, secured by Veritas Solicitors, to fund costly IVF treatment to try and conceive.pic 2 Lauren in the hospital

Lauren was initially told by specialists she had ‘borderline changes’ in Human Papillomavirus (HPV) but was later advised of ‘no abnormal cells’ following a colposcopy done at Lister Hospital in 2015.

At her next screening three years later, she reported spotting which turned out to be grade 2 carcinoma of the cervix following an MRI scan and biopsies.

She said: “My sister came in the room with me when I was told the results and I remember sitting there frozen. I looked over at her and she looked so pale. I felt like I was listening to someone else’s results, it didn’t feel real.

“I was in disbelief. All sorts of thoughts go through your head, ‘I’m too young’ or ‘how can this be happening?’ You don’t imagine it to happen to you.

“I had radical surgery in the form of a Trachelectomy and Pelvic Lymphadenectomy in December 2018 at Watford General Hospital, where they removed my cervix.Pic 4 Lauren right with her sister Jade

“I’m so grateful to still be alive, but there is now a worry that I may never become a mum, which really frightens me. I’m thankful to Veritas Solicitors for at least giving us the chance of having children via IVF, which is not something my partner and I would have been able to afford otherwise.

“All my sisters have children, and I’ve wanted to be a mum ever since I can remember.”

In late 2018 Lauren’s original smear was reviewed as part of the National Invasive Cervical Cancer Audit, and the classification was upgraded to Glandular Neoplasia, which meant the cancer cells could have been present at the time of the initial test.

She was informed about the error by a consultant leading her treatment at Watford General before making a formal complaint to Lister Hospital.

Their investigation concluded that, albeit difficult for a medic to spot, there were potentially subtle changes present in 2015 and that a biopsy at the time might have helped in the diagnosis.

Lauren’s case was taken on by Veritas Solicitors in August 2020 and a claim was made against East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust, who took over Ipswich NHS Trust where the pathologist was employed at the time.

The Manchester firm obtained independent expert evidence showing the 2015 cervical specimen had wrongly been reported as having “borderline changes” and a biopsy at the time would have confirmed pre-invasive cancer rather than developing into a tumour requiring radical surgery.

Lauren added: “I feel like I’m always looking over my shoulder, living in fear of it coming back. I never expected to go through something like this at such a young age.

“Shock aside, I feel disappointed because it’s something you don’t expect can happen. I trusted the experts and they got it wrong. I was heartbroken and just play over in my mind what could have been done differently.

“Aside from the physical pain, I have a constant fear of running out time in life, which is why I want to get on with it and see as much as I can.”

Currently on the NHS, women are not routinely screened under the age of 25 despite cervical cancer affecting younger women as well.

Lauren, who has been cancer-free for four years, is now calling for changes to the testing age range which she believes could save lives.

The professional photographer went on to say: “The fact that cervical cancer can affect younger women is often overlooked. I’m calling for a change in cervical screening to include women under 25.

“My advice to other women is if you feel something isn’t right, get it checked. Listen to your body and don’t put it off.

“People need to trust their instincts and not be afraid to speak up if they have concerns. Early detection can save lives, and I hope my story will encourage other women to be more vigilant about their health.”

Lauren’s solicitor, Amina Ali from Veritas Solicitors, added: “Lauren’s case highlights the importance of seeking legal advice if you have concerns about the medical care you have received.

“We hope that by sharing Lauren’s story, we can raise awareness of the impact that medical negligence can have on people’s lives and encourage others to come forward.

“It’s important to be aware of your rights and feel empowered to seek legal advice if you have concerns about your medical care. I also hope Lauren’s powerful story will inspire other women to be mindful about their own health. I wish her all the best in the future.”

Middlesbrough vs Coventry Match Preview

Middlesbrough have been one of the stories of the season under Michael Carrick in English football, but need to improve their recent form in time for this second leg. Boro are four games without a win in the Championship including their 0-0 draw last time out and have only scored twice during that run. Carrick will have his hopes pinned on the forward pair of Chuba Akpom and Cameron Archer in this contest, who have combined to score 39 goals in the Championship this season.

Coventry are unbeaten in their last eight matches and have lost only one of their last 18 in the Championship following an incredible run that has dragged them into the Championship Play-Offs. There has been nothing to separate the two sides, for whom this will be their third meeting in nine days following a 1-1 draw on the final day of the season and a 0-0 stalemate in the first leg of their Play-Off semi-final. Mark Robins’ team will be buoyed by the fact they have gone nine games unbeaten away from home coming into this fixture, keeping five clean sheets along the way.
