Unveiling the future of fashion: Hainsworth and MMUFDT announce winner of slow fashion competition

0

Hainsworth, a British fabric manufacturer and woollen mill known for its commitment to quality and sustainability, recently collaborated with Manchester Metropolitan University’s Fashion Design and Technology program (MMUFDT) for the 22/23 Live Brief competition. The annual competition challenged future fashion designers to create garments that embody the essence of slow fashion – using Hainsworth’s premium fabrics.

Students who entered the competition were encouraged to consider various elements of slow fashion, including waste reduction, use of natural materials, quality craftsmanship, style over trend, functionality, and garment longevity. After careful deliberation, student Stacy Chan was chosen as the winning designer, drawing inspiration from her Chinese heritage to create a stylish and timeless design.

The competition showcased excellent craftsmanship from MMUFDT students, demonstrating their design talent and commitment to sustainable fashion. Each designer brought a unique perspective to their creations, integrating personal experiences and cultural heritage into their designs. Hainsworth worked alongside course tutor Adrian Thornton in facilitating the project.

Among the standout entries were:

·    Amelia Bush’s ‘Future Nostalgia’: A garment blending craftsmanship and technological innovation made of Black Doeskin fabric.

·    Bailey Warburton’s ‘Timeless Gown’: A stunning gown made of Charcoal Melange Melton, inspired by investigations into women’s wardrobes and their timeless pieces.

·    Charlotte Braddock’s ‘Contrasting Elements’: Exploring military heritage and anti-fashion concepts, combining classic tailoring with contemporary ideas.

·    Emily Jayne Read’s ‘Freedom-inspired Design’: A project centred around freedom within the military, art, and women, focusing on LGBTQ+ evolution in the military.

·    Max Grimshaw’s ‘British Pub Culture’: Incorporating shapes derived from primary research, experimenting with natural dyeing using spinach.

·    Wiki Nicieja’s ‘Polish Heritage Exploration’: Weaving Polish elegance with textile craftsmanship expertise, creating deeply personal yet universally resonant designs.

·    Rachel Humphreys’ Transeasonal Collection: Classic styles transformed into timeless pieces featuring adaptable elements and durable, biodegradable wool fabric.

While all the entries displayed exceptional craftsmanship and adherence to slow fashion principles, Stacy Chan’s collection was chosen as the winner of the competition and £500 prize. Her elegant designs focused on timeless pieces that can be worn through generations, and her final garment was created with Hainsworth Jade cloth from the Vivid Hues Melton range and a silk lining.

Stacy explained: “I am incredibly happy for being chosen as the best in class. This project has been my favourite so far, and seeing my hard work paid off is very pleasant.”

Charlotte Law, Marketing Manager at AW Hainsworth, commented on Stacy’s winning design: “Stacy’s garment really stood out to us. The symbolism behind the sublimation print tells a story of longevity, while the Chinese knot buttons, handmade with care, represent rich heritage and skilled craftsmanship.”

Hainsworth, a pioneer in the slow fashion movement, aims to connect environmental, ethical, and social responsibility to create beautiful, well-made garments that stand the test of time. Designers, tailors and garment manufacturers choose Hainsworth’s premium woollen textiles from diverse industries, united in their desire for the best craftsmanship and true British provenance.

Next month, members of the Hainsworth team will travel to London College of Fashion to judge another live brief fashion design competition for students.

The Benefits Of Yoga And How Practising It Can Improve Your Life

0

Yoga dates back to the early century BC, when it was practised as a form of exercise and physical discipline in India. It possesses a history of over 5,000 years. Today, yoga is very popular in Western countries both in terms of the number of people practising it and how accessible this exercise has become. It provides many physical and mental benefits for individuals who practise it regularly.

By practising yoga regularly, you can improve your life by enhancing your body balance, making proper posture easier to achieve, relieving stress and tension from your muscles, and improving moods so that you are more able to cope with awkward situations or chaotic environments. All these benefits come from an enhanced musculoskeletal system.

The musculoskeletal system is a collection of muscles, bones and joints and how they form a complex but highly efficient structure that allows you to move easily and quickly. However, it is essential to understand that the musculoskeletal system needs to be maintained by practising regular exercise and small changes in posture throughout the day.

Therapeutically, yoga promotes relaxation, which helps maintain health and cure acute diseases. In addition, it helps strengthen both body and mind. Asanas or postures are exercises that involve the control of physical movements.

Yoga involves physical exercises and postures to improve overall health and physical and mental balance. Yoga is also done through meditation.

Through the practice of yoga, our bodies are able to relax as we learn to control our breath, focus our attention inwardly and achieve a calm state of mind. Therapeutically (in treatment), yoga is used in conjunction with other therapies (such as psychiatry), which can help treat conditions such as hypertension, peripheral arterial disease, panic disorders, narcolepsy, depression and arthritis.

Also, we can help prevent diseases by practising correct breathing and attention to the mind and body. Yoga is a wonderful way to have fun with exercise. It has been proven that children who practice yoga on a regular basis have better muscle tone than children who do not do it. In addition, yoga helps improve their concentration, coordination and discipline, among other benefits.

Yoga is an excellent way for students and working professionals to relax without bending or stretching themselves into uncomfortable positions that lead to painful injuries and compromise posture. And all that is needed to start is an app on your smartphone – you can do yoga remotely without having to attend classes.

Yoga has been proven to be one of the most effective methods of body adjusting. It is suitable for people who are unable to maintain the position needed for chiropractic procedures. Yoga utilises the idea of keeping your spine straight for long periods of time and focuses on breathing, which is a great way to maintain a proper posture and prevent back problems.

Through yoga exercises, we can help ourselves lead better lives by improving our physical conditions in ways that may not have been imagined in the past. We are able to extend life by stretching muscles and bones, coordination and flexibility while relieving stress and anxiety through meditation.

For the musculoskeletal system to function appropriately and efficiently, flexibility is significant. Without adequate flexibility, the muscles and joints can quickly become overworked, causing injury and pain. By practising yoga regularly, we can help improve our physical condition by increasing flexibility in our bodies and reducing back pain.

The meditative aspect of yoga allows us to focus on our bodily functions. By paying attention to how your body feels from moment to moment during a yoga session, you begin to develop an awareness of the sensations that occur while you are going through your day or performing other activities. As a result, yoga can help you identify physical problems and correct them before they become a significant health risk.

Yoga helps reduce the levels of stress chemicals and hormones in our bodies. This results in better blood circulation and is an excellent preventive measure against memory loss, heart disease, high blood pressure, sleeping problems and certain forms of cancer. In addition, yoga is an effective way for people to improve their health by increasing their resistance levels to some diseases.

Yoga can improve the psychological aspect of our lives, helping us to achieve a calm state of mind where we are more able to achieve a balance between our multiple roles as spouse, parent and worker. Yoga can also help relieve stress and anxiety so that we are more able to cope with awkward situations or chaotic environments.

Yoga is an excellent way for middle-aged people to prevent heart disease. Regular yoga reduces blood pressure and cholesterol levels in the body, and it also lowers the risk of having a heart attack.

The effects of stress on our bodies leave us susceptible to many different ailments and conditions. Practising yoga has been proven to be one of the most effective ways to relieve stress levels in our bodies and minds to better cope with difficult situations or traumatic events in our daily lives.

Affluent Rural Residents Lead the Adoption of Heat Pumps, Reveals New Study

0

In light of the government’s ambitious net-zero strategy, Harding Heating has conducted research to evaluate the progress of heat pump installations, a key component of the Department of Energy’s plans.

The study indicates that the wealthiest 30% of the UK’s population are ten times more likely to install heat pumps compared to the poorest third. Moreover, a significant majority of heat pump adopters (74%) reside in rural areas. Notably, those who opt for heat pumps typically own larger homes, with an average of four bedrooms, while those who choose gas boilers tend to have homes with three bedrooms. Interestingly, heat pump installations are commonly observed in older (pre-1900) or newer (post-2012) houses, whereas gas boilers are prevalent in properties built between 1950 and 1975.

While heat pumps excel in heating water, with an impressive satisfaction rate of 89%, they receive less favorable reviews when it comes to heating living spaces, with a satisfaction rate of only 56%. As a result, more than two-thirds of heat pump users rely on a secondary heat source, with wood stoves being the preferred option for half of them, followed by gas boilers for a third.

Despite the perceived environmental benefits, heat pump installations do not necessarily lead to significant cost savings. Around 66% of heat pump users express satisfaction with their running costs, compared to nearly 60% satisfaction among gas boiler users, even considering the elevated gas prices in 2022. Consequently, while heat pumps contribute to lower household emissions, they may not result in noticeable monetary savings.

The adoption of heat pumps by energy companies remains relatively slow, with only 4% of heat pump installations attributed to energy suppliers. In contrast, energy suppliers are responsible for installing one-fifth of gas boilers. This discrepancy raises questions about the motivations and commitment of energy companies to embrace heat pump technology, potentially influenced by their interests in preserving gas sales.

To achieve the government’s net-zero objectives by 2050, an essential obligation now enshrined in the Energy Bill, the number of heat pump installations needs to increase substantially. The goal is to expand annual heat pump installations from the current 30,000 to an ambitious 600,000 by 2028. Accomplishing this target necessitates a significant upsurge in the number of accredited installers, from 3,000 in 2022 to an estimated 27,000. Notably, regions with higher numbers of heat pump installations tend to be predominantly rural, with Shropshire and Staffordshire featuring approximately three installers per 100,000 individuals, ranking among the top 10 regions in the UK.

The government has embarked on an extensive strategy to fulfill its objectives. The launch of the £450 million Strategic Innovation Fund (SIF) underscores its commitment to transforming the UK into a global leader in energy innovation, particularly by supporting heat pumps and related advancements. Furthermore, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme provides grants of £5,000 to incentivise households to switch to heat pumps. However, the additional costs borne by households, averaging £5,000, render heat pumps twice as expensive as the average gas boiler.

Seeking a blend of incentive and enforcement, the government plans to introduce a penalty of £5,000 per missed heat pump target for boiler manufacturers, effective from 2024. This measure has faced resistance from manufacturers, who warn of potential cost transfers to customers and reduced investment in the UK.

Alarming Study Reveals Lack of Awareness About Career Advice Among UK’s Youth

0

Youth Group, the leading organisation dedicated to youth employment in the UK with a membership exceeding 1.7 million, has released new findings that shed light on the extent to which young people are facing a dearth of accessible support and guidance in kick-starting their careers and navigating the challenging job market in the country.

According to a recent study conducted by Youth Group, a staggering three-fifths (63%) of individuals aged between 18 and 25 are oblivious to the current availability of career advice resources specifically catered to their needs.

Furthermore, nearly half (48%) of the respondents expressed a sense of limitation when attempting to access crucial career guidance.

These alarming figures coincide with the highly anticipated launch of Season 3 of “My Duvet Flip: The Careers Show for Young People,” hosted by Jack Parsons, the Chief Youth Officer of the UK.

Supporting the latest season of “My Duvet Flip” are returning partners Aviva & EY, along with the addition of Totaljobs, a prominent UK jobs platform.

The partnership between Totaljobs and “My Duvet Flip” aims to address the significant challenges faced by young individuals in the UK. Totaljobs’ own report on the nation’s future talent, released in October 2022, highlighted that half (48%) of 16-18-year-olds believed they were not receiving adequate career advice in their schools.

With over 20 years of experience in helping individuals find suitable employment, Totaljobs is committed to empowering and inspiring the youth across the UK. Through Season 3, presented by Jack Parsons, the show engages in candid conversations with global business leaders, entrepreneurs, and politicians. These discussions delve into their respective career journeys and extract valuable tips and advice for the audience. The series also provides insights into the motivations and positive mindsets of these accomplished leaders.

The previous season of “My Duvet Flip” boasted an impressive lineup of guests, including UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Debbie Hewitt (FA Chairman), Sebastian Dettmers (Chief Executive Officer of The Stepstone Group), and Matt Brittin (President of Google Europe). Season 2 garnered a staggering 9 million views and generated over eight times more engagement compared to the previous season.

Jack Parsons, CEO of Youth Group and the UK’s Chief Youth Officer, expressed his excitement for the third season of “My Duvet Flip,” stating, “The podcast is all about supporting the millions of young people across the UK and empowering them to achieve their goals.”

Sebastian Dettmers, Chief Executive Officer of The Stepstone Group, expressed pride in Totaljobs becoming a partner for the show’s third season, highlighting the shared mission of inspiring and supporting young people in the world of work.

Phoebe Barter, Group Brand Director of Aviva, emphasised the importance of the topics discussed on “My Duvet Flip,” such as mental health, career uncertainty, and the cost of living, and the commitment of Aviva to help individuals solve their financial challenges.

Jack Parsons, who has received numerous accolades including being recognised as LinkedIn’s ‘Top Voice for Young People’ and ‘Top 15 Young Entrepreneurs to Watch,’ hopes that the third season of “My Duvet Flip” will serve as an inspiration for young individuals across the UK to realise and fulfill their potential.

The Greening of Accounting: Educating Accountants for a Sustainable Future

0

In an era increasingly defined by environmental awareness, businesses and industries worldwide are adapting to meet the demands of sustainability. Accounting, a profession often viewed as dry and focused solely on numbers, is at the forefront of this green revolution. Today’s accountants need to understand and integrate Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) factors into their practices. As the sector continues to evolve, so too must the education that prepares future accountants for these new responsibilities.

Understanding the Role of Green Accounting

Green accounting, also known as environmental accounting, involves integrating environmental costs and benefits into financial statements. It’s an approach that requires accountants to consider the environmental impact of a company’s operations and express them in monetary terms. With the rise of ESG factors playing a pivotal role in financial decisions, this practice encompasses assessing and reporting on everything from the cost of pollution and waste management to the benefits derived from sustainable practices and renewable energy.

In the UK, landmark legislation like the Climate Change Act 2008 lays out the government’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 100% of 1990 levels by 2050. This challenging objective necessitates a radical transformation across all sectors, including finance and accounting. Consequently, the onus now lies on accountants to provide transparent, accurate, and comprehensive reports on the environmental impacts of companies ESG performances.

Implications for Accounting Education

The evolution towards green accounting necessitates an equivalent transformation in accounting education. Educational programmes must equip aspiring accountants with the necessary skills to understand and implement sustainable accounting practices effectively, guiding businesses towards their environmental goals and meeting their ESG targets. To realise this vision, changes in accounting education could include the following aspects:

Broadening the Curriculum: Traditional accounting courses, pivotal for attaining accountancy qualifications, tend to focus heavily on financial accounting, tax, and auditing. While these are crucial areas, the curriculum needs to expand on courses dedicated to the ESG and include modules on environmental management, sustainability reporting, corporate social responsibility, ESG integration. This will equip students with the tools to measure and report on environmental costs, guiding businesses to make more sustainable decisions.

Enhancing Understanding of Environmental Policies: Future accountants need to be familiar with the UK’s environmental legislation, including the Climate Change Act and other relevant regulations. This would require incorporating legal studies into accounting education to ensure that graduates can navigate the complex legal landscape around sustainability and ESG governance.

Promoting Ethical Awareness: Accounting professionals have a duty to uphold ethical standards. This duty extends to the environment, where accountants can play a vital role in promoting ethical environmental practices. As such, ethics should be a central part of the accounting curriculum, with a focus on the ethical dimensions of environmental stewardship and ESG principles.

Encouraging Critical Thinking: Green accounting and ESG integration are rapidly evolving fields, and tomorrow’s accountants need to be agile and adaptable. Accounting education should foster critical thinking, encouraging students to question existing practices and find innovative solutions to environmental challenges.

The Future of Green Accounting

The shift towards green accounting is more than just a trend; it’s an essential part of the global response to climate change. As businesses increasingly recognise their environmental responsibilities and the importance of ESG metrics, the demand for accountants with expertise in sustainability is set to rise.

For instance, the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) encourages companies to voluntarily disclose their environmental risks, pushing the need for green accounting skills further into the mainstream.

As we move towards a greener future, accounting educators must respond by producing graduates who can navigate this new landscape. Accounting is no longer just about balancing the books; it’s about balancing the needs of business with the demands of the environment and integrating ESG considerations into financial analyses.

The greening of accounting represents an opportunity for the profession to take a leading role in tackling one of the most critical issues of our time. By equipping the next generation of accountants with the skills to manage and report on environmental issues and ESG factors, we can ensure that the accounting profession contributes positively to a sustainable future.

As Albert Einstein once said, “We can’t solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them.” In the fight against climate change, the accounting profession has the chance to prove him right.

Brighton Gears Up for European Campaign in Exciting New Season

0

Brighton and Hove Albion are poised to embark on another thrilling season as they prepare for their first European adventure following a remarkable sixth-place finish in the Premier League, securing them a spot in the Europa League for the 2023-24 campaign.

Roberto De Zerbi, who took charge of the club in September 2022 following Graham Potter’s departure, has made an indelible impact on the south coast club. In his debut match at the helm, his team displayed immense promise by securing a memorable 3-3 draw against Liverpool at Anfield.

Leandro Trossard, the goal-scorer in that captivating encounter, showcased his talent with a hat-trick, prompting Arsenal to acquire his services for a significant fee of £20 million (plus £7 million in add-ons) in January. Brighton, however, continued to thrive under De Zerbi’s leadership, delivering strong results while playing an attractive brand of football.

With their inaugural participation in European competition on the horizon, Albion aims to prove their mettle in the Europa League. Bolstered by the strength of their squad, they are confident in their ability to make a deep run in the tournament.

While relishing their historic European journey, their ambitions extend beyond that. Brighton strives to establish themselves as a consistent top-six contender, building upon their impressive finish from the previous season. Additionally, De Zerbi’s side performed admirably in domestic competitions, reaching the FA Cup semi-finals and the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup during the 2022-23 campaign.

Prior to the commencement of pre-season preparations, Brighton has already secured several signings. Midfielders James Milner and Mahmoud Dahoud have joined as free agents, while the club has broken its transfer record to acquire forward João Pedro from Watford. Retaining promising players like Kaoru Mitoma, Evan Ferguson, and Moisés Caicedo will provide a strong foundation for the team moving forward.

Teenager Evan Ferguson garnered significant attention from Premier League fans last season with his impressive tally of 10 goals for the Seasiders. At just 18 years old, he possesses immense potential and room for growth.

Brighton’s ambitious project continues to attract talented players, but competing in Europe may present a significant challenge for the current squad. The demanding Europa League schedule, involving matches on Thursdays and domestic fixtures on weekends, may stretch their squad depth and lead to additional injuries and fatigue. It will be a true test of De Zerbi’s managerial acumen and the capabilities of his backroom staff to navigate these challenges successfully.

The new Premier League season kicks off for Brighton with a home fixture against newly promoted Luton Town at the AMEX Stadium, where the Seagulls will be heavily favored to secure victory. They then travel to Molineux to face Wolves in their first away game, followed by back-to-back home matches against West Ham and Newcastle United.

In their fifth game of the season, they face Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United at Old Trafford. Brighton emerged triumphant in both league encounters against United last season, including a memorable victory at Old Trafford on the opening day. However, their FA Cup journey was halted by the Red Devils in the semi-finals, with United advancing on penalties.

Their first clash with Ten Hag’s men in the upcoming season promises to be a compelling encounter, full of intrigue and excitement.

Business services and tech shine in strong H1

0

Grant Thornton UK LLP’s Northern Corporate Finance team has reported a successful H1 in 2023, with continued progress in the mid-market.

Over the first six months of 2023, the Northern team, spanning the North West, Yorkshire and the North East, has successfully advised on over 10 deals, equating to c£100m in value.

Most recently, the team, led by partner Peter Terry, Northern head of Corporate Finance, advised on private equity firm Mercia’s exit from Manchester-based global parking reservation platform ParkVia to CAVU, a subsidiary of Manchester Airports Group.

This was the third tech-based deal within the North West region that Grant Thornton has advised on in the first half, following the sale of two Liverpool businesses Ardent Credit Services and Horsefly.

Meanwhile in Yorkshire, the corporate finance team has recently advised on the cross-border transaction of Schoeller-Bleckmann‘s acquisition of well completion specialist Praxis Completion Technology in Dubai.

This builds off the success of last year when Grant Thornton’s northern advisory team completed 48 deals.

Peter Terry said: “Despite the more challenging market conditions, with inflation still high and interest rates rising, there is a resilient market for high quality assets run by ambitious management teams.

“SaaS businesses operating in favourable verticals continue to prove attractive to investors, both domestic and overseas, due to the annuity-like nature of their revenues, their scalability and resilience.”

Jim Whittaker, Director in Yorkshire, added: “The continuing uncertainty in the wider macro environment means ongoing caution and sector selectivity amongst investors.  We are seeing deeper market and financial diligence demands as well as, in some cases, more downside protection for buyers being built into deal structuring through earn-outs.  However, many corporates with robust balance sheets and access to capital continue to see genuine strategic opportunities, particularly overseas buyers who still regard the UK as good value at a time when there might be less competition for assets.”

Over the last six months, the Northern team has welcomed six new members to the team at Assistant Manager and Manager level, joining their Manchester, Leeds and Liverpool offices. This includes Ammen Arya, Sarah Mackey, James Wheeler, Maria Barnes and Jordan Fenney.

Banned by DVLA: All ’73’ Number Plates, Including BE73 END and FA73 DCK

The DVLA has released the complete list of banned number plates, which includes BE73 END and FA73 DCK.

Every year, two sets of number plates are issued, with the ’23’ number plates introduced in March and the ’73’ plates set to be released in September.

Given the vast number of plates being issued, it’s not surprising that some combinations of letters and numbers can form offensive words or nearly offensive words.

To ensure road safety, the DVLA preemptively bans a group of number plates that could be considered offensive.

Jon Kirkbright, sales director at Platehunter, a specialist in private number plates, filed a Freedom of Information request to the DVLA to obtain the exclusive list of banned plates.

The list includes understandably offensive combinations such as BO73 LOX, HA73 GAY, LE73 ZZA, SH73 TER, and WH73 PWR.

Jon commented on the banned plates, stating, “With such a large number of plates being released at once, it’s no surprise that some of them are unsuitable for the road. However, some of the plates are on the borderline, but I understand why the DVLA chose to be extra cautious. They are simply trying to protect a significant source of revenue.”

According to Jon, the biannual release of new number plates brings forth thousands of sought-after combinations. He predicts that EL73NOR, AN73 ONY, and FA73 EMA will be popular choices among the new releases. Currently, these plates are being sold for prices ranging from £4,995 to £7,995.

Platehunter, a reputable number plate supplier, has been in business for 11 years and offers over 56 million personalised number plates for sale. The company prides itself on affordability, with plates starting at just £39 plus VAT and transfer fees.

Jon further stated, “Names are always in high demand. People want to have their names on their cars, and the market for personalised plates is continually growing in popularity.

“We’ve noticed an increasing number of individuals purchasing personalised plates for themselves, their children, or even their business vehicles. Names or initials are the most common requests from customers. Each new release is exciting because it allows drivers to acquire plates that were previously unavailable.”

While pre-orders are not available, Platehunter aims to fulfill 95% of the plates that customers inquire about.

Individuals in search of a registration plate are encouraged to explore the Platehunter website. Jon added, “If customers can’t find what they’re looking for, they can provide us with their specifications, and we will notify them if the desired plate becomes available.

“We can also arrange to auction any DVLA number plate, as long as it meets legal requirements and has not been issued previously.”

For more information or assistance with purchasing or selling a private number plate, please visit PlateHunter’s website. Additionally, you can follow and contact them on InstagramTwitter or Facebook..
