Roland Dransfield appointed by Crowne Plaza and Staybridge Suites to market Manchester’s first dual-branded hotel

PR and digital marketing agency Roland Dransfield has been appointed by Crowne Plaza and Staybridge Suites – Manchester Oxford Road, to market Manchester’s first dual-branded hotel.

The Manchester-based agency was selected following a competitive pitch process to support the launch of the 19-storey building, which is located on Corridor Manchester.

Containing 328-rooms, the dual-branded Crowne Plaza and Staybridge Suites – known as a ‘double pack’ concept – will be unveiled to the public in early 2018.

Both brands are part of the IHG portfolio.

Roland Dransfield’s associate director Caroline Aspinall said: “Manchester is following in the footsteps of great cities across the globe that have incorporated dual-branded hotels in their offer.

“Roland Dransfield is delighted to be involved in telling that unique story and in bringing a ‘first’ to Manchester.

“At the same time, we are thrilled to have secured such a high profile and coveted client when competition for the account was so high.

“Our campaign ideas really resonated with the client and clearly supported their objectives for a successful launch.”

The dual-branded hotel forms part of the University of Manchester’s Campus Masterplan, which includes the wider redevelopment of Alliance Manchester Business School. It will also adjoin its new two-storey Executive Education Centre, which will provide a new home for the business school’s corporate leadership and management programmes.

Both Crowne Plaza and Staybridge Suites sit within Corridor Manchester, which is home to 70,000 students and boasts a workforce of 60,000 people – with 14,000 new jobs planned.

Andrew Fletcher is General Manager. He said: “We really are thrilled to be working with Roland Dransfield to bring our dual-branded hotel concept to Manchester.

“There was an instant connection with the Roland Dransfield team. They demonstrated their expertise and that each of them have different skills and experience to bring to the account.

“They had researched well, responded properly to the brief and showed they fully understood our need to build links with the Manchester community and what is known as Corridor Manchester.

“Their pitch was highly engaging and focussed on deliverables – rather than proving who else they had worked with.

“They were definitely best in class and we are delighted to have them onboard.”

The appointment comes as Roland Dransfield marks its 21st birthday by launching a consumer division to service a growing number of consumer-facing accounts.

The division, led by Adam Moss, also manages accounts for Sale Sharks, Boodles Tennis, Playon Pro, The Offside Trust and The Range.

Adam Moss joined Roland Dransfield as head of consumer in July from Brazen, where he spent nine years as director of news and creative content.

Caroline added: “We’ve always has a great reputation for our B2B and are already carving out an enviable reputation for our B2C work too.

“Our aim is to be as successful with our consumer offering as the agency has been over the last 21 years with its B2B offering so we can ensure there isn’t a brief that we cannot respond to.”

Manchester Tech Trust promotes locally-developed software through the Startup Toolkit

Charity’s partnership with Twine is showcase for high quality software developed in the city

Manchester Tech Trust (MTT), the non-profit organisation which links investors and early stage tech businesses, is partnering with Manchester startup Twine to provide a toolkit of essential software for startup and scale up companies.

The Startup Toolkit is made up of seven free or heavily-discounted software packages including best value solutions for web build, cloud telephony, cloud hosting and CRM tools.

And with five of the seven packages from Manchester startups, it is also a showcase for the world-class quality software coming out of Manchester and the North-west. The toolkit, which can be accessed via the Manchester Tech Trust website, has been assembled by Twine, which connects companies to creatives by making it simple to write a project brief and curating the best quality freelancers. Twine was named one of Creative England’s 2017 Top 50 Future Leaders for the way it encourages creative collaboration.

Twine MD Stuart Logan says: “The steps in starting-up are common to all companies. Getting a logo, building a proof of concept web site with explainer video, sending out your investment deck to potential funders, getting in touch with your first customers, and keeping a track of them on a CRM.  The Startup Toolkit is a package of unique offers for the most appropriate services and products. These will help you present your business idea or product professionally, increase the productivity of your team, and enable you to grow faster.”

The Startup Toolkit includes software from North-west companies Twine, Cindr, CircleLoop, Capsule, FlowX, Ifarm and also US firm ZenDesk.

MTT CEO Peter Lusty says: “All startups and growing businesses require essential software packages. These are now being made available to new businesses for free or for minimal cost through our partnership with Twine. These are super-helpful basic tools for new businesses, but what’s so pleasing about this toolkit is that most are software packages developed in Manchester and the north-west, and showcase the quality of the enterprise tech sector here.

“Other similar toolkits are available but tend to offer software developed in the US. When north-west startups access the toolkit from the MTT site, they are getting best-of-breed packages, but they are also actively supporting the Manchester digital economy.

“Tech Trust aims to expand the offer over time, and as well as promoting these services in Greater Manchester, we will also seek to work with organisations like Creative England to promote these home-grown services across the UK.”

Mr Lusty adds: “Through the Manchester Tech Trust website and events, we have established ourselves as a super connector, the ‘go to’ organisation in the city to bring people, support and finance together to make things happen quickly and effectively. MTT has utilised its mentoring network to help over 60 local entrepreneurs and young companies in 2017.”

MTTs next mentoring event takes place on Thursday the 28th September at Manchester Science Partnership’s brand new Bright Building. Tech startups and local entrepreneurs can find further information and register to attend here.

Trafford Housing Trust continues to lead in the provision of extra-care accommodation for the over 55s with launch of Limelight apartments in Old Trafford

Trafford Housing Trust is enhancing its reputation as a pioneer in the provision of specialist extra care facilities for the over 55s with the launch of new apartments as part of the Limelight scheme in Old Trafford.

The ground-breaking Limelight development features a total of 81 one and two-bed apartments comprising 21 two-bed extra care apartments offered on an Older People’s Shared Ownership (OPSO) basis and 60 one and two-bed properties available to rent.

The growing imbalance between demand and supply of OPSO properties in the North West of England is highlighted by figures from Help To Buy North West – the organisation which processes OPSO applications in the region – showing just 285 OPSO applications have been made across the North West since 2015.

The launch of Limelight builds on the Trust’s expertise in the provision of extra care facilities, being it’s third purpose-built scheme alongside those at Fiona Gardens in Sale and Newhaven at Altrincham, offering the over-55s a total of 190 tailor-made, extra care apartments across the three sites.

Show apartments at Limelight are already open and available for appointments and viewings – with numerous enquiries and visits already made by prospective occupants.

On completion in October, Limelight will be a unique, community-based facility offering a range of primary healthcare facilities including a GP surgery and pharmacy together with a library, café, multi-purpose event space, hairdresser and opticians. In addition, Limelight will offer a nursery and services aimed at families and young people, – making it a truly ‘intergenerational space’ available to everyone of all ages.

David Teasdale, manager of Limelight, said: “The fact that Help To Buy NW has only had to process 285 OPSO applications in the past two years shows that Limelight’s apartments are a welcome and much needed boost to a residential market where there clearly aren’t enough homes offered on an OPSO basis to an increasingly ageing population.

“We’re very proud to be leading the market in this area with what will be one of the UK’s

most progressive and accessible community spaces, bringing huge benefits to Old Trafford.

“Limelight will offer a truly integrated approach to health and wellbeing services, education and employment resources, leisure and social activities and the provision of advice and support.”

New Construction Training Firm Builds a Base in Middleton

0

Rochdale’s regeneration boom has fuelled another business boost, with a new firm looking to supply the construction workers of tomorrow.

Greater Manchester Construction Training Limited (GMCT Ltd) which has just driven its diggers onto a two acre plot in Bowlee, Middleton following an 18-month search for a site, is the only training centre in Greater Manchester which offers national apprenticeships in operating construction machinery.

Director Brad Daniel said: “With major projects the new shopping and leisure development in the town centre on the horizon, there’s huge potential for construction in Rochdale. GMCT Ltd being located at Bowlee also means local people will be in the best position to receive training and potentially employment because we offer the national apprenticeship and adult learning. The only other places where people can receive this type of training are Norfolk and Preston.”

The company, which works with major names like Russells, Kier and Wates, as well as smaller companies, was founded by Brad and Ian Eardley, who between them have more than 20 years-experience of training construction workers. The duo already have an office in Sudden and wanted to stay in the borough as they expanded their business.

Brad added: “A lot of people left the industry during the recession or were reluctant to enter into it, but now construction is booming and we are building again, particularly in Rochdale, we need to fill that skills gap. The business community is thriving in Rochdale and we work with other local firms like PLP Construction in Heywood. The council has helped us make connections with other people in the industry and they found this site for us after a really long search. We had really specific requirements, so we wouldn’t have found this place without the help of the council.”

And one local who has already benefitted is Sam Booth (25) from Milnrow. Sam, who currently works at the council’s Bowlee nursery, has been offered free training by the firm to give him more career options.

He said: “I’ll working towards my CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme), which is your passport in this industry really. It’s an exciting time for me because I’m saving up to get my own place and this gives me potential to go into a really good career.”

Director Ian Eardley added: “Demand for training is greater than the supply in this industry and salaries can go up to £20-£25 an hour, depending on the job, so construction is a great career option. We’ve already put 20 people through training and are looking forward to getting even more local people ready to build the new Rochdale.”

Councillor Richard Farnell, leader of Rochdale Borough Council, said: “Having this national training centre right on our doorstep is a great opportunity for our young people and those who are looking to re-enter this industry. Rochdale is booming. We’ve got major developments happening all the time and we’re building 460 new homes each year, so there will be plenty of opportunities for local people to get work in the borough once they’ve completed their training.”

Construction apprenticeships which are available for Rochdale residents can be found at: rochdaleapprenticeships.org

Businesses which would like to find out more about free support services which are available in Rochdale, including advice on locations, growth and coming to the borough for the first time, can visit: investinrochdale.co.uk

Leading European Compressor Manufacturer chooses Holroyd’s “Two-in-One” Profile Milling Technology

0

One of Europe’s leading manufacturers of high quality compressed air systems has purchased two of Holroyd Precision’s newly developed 4EX-R-BL (BL = blower) CNC profile milling machines.

Built at Holroyd’s UK technology centre in Rochdale, 4EX-R-BL models are effectively two machines in one as, in addition to producing helical rotors, they can be programmed to precision-mill straight-fluted components as used in Roots-type blower ‘air ends’.

Flexibility to cut both helical rotors and Roots-type blowers

“Since announcing their launch, we have received considerable interest in the capabilities of 4EX-R-BL models from manufacturers who wish to achieve high levels of efficiency,” says Holroyd sales manager, Mark Curran. “As you can imagine, it was therefore particularly pleasing to then secure two machine orders from one of Europe’s leading manufacturers of compressor systems. The company in question required the flexibility to cut both helical rotors and blowers, and the 4EX-R-BL machines more than fitted the bill.”

For some time, Precision Technologies Group business, Holroyd Precision, has been looking at how it can further extend the capabilities of its EX Series milling machines, to enable their high speed, high precision and high performance to be applied to the manufacture of Roots-type blowers.

The company believes the new model will revolutionise the way in which straight fluted, infinitive lead rotors are milled, significantly reducing manufacturing time and increasing the accuracy of the production process.

30-minute milling time, floor-to-floor

Although sitting within Holroyd’s EX range of rotor milling machines, the 4EX-R-BL is in fact a totally new machine that has been designed from the ground up. As well as being equipped to mill helical rotors of up to 450mm in diameter, the 4EX-R-BL will rough mill blower blanks of around 320mm in diameter and 900mm body length into straight fluted rotors in 30 minutes floor-to-floor, ready for finish profile milling to absolute size. This represents a significant time saving when compared to the one-and-a-half to two hours typically required to cut individual Roots-type blower rotor flutes using traditional milling techniques.

No manual intervention

Totally removing the need for manual intervention or indexing during the milling of each flute, the Holroyd 4EX-R-BL features a bespoke steadying system that has been designed to withstand the additional forces that are generated during the milling of straight flutes. Specially developed ‘finger clamps’ ensure the workpiece is held securely while a flute is being milled, then release to enable automatic rotation and positioning ready for milling of the next flute.

“In what has been a genuine ‘from the ground up’ development of a completely new kind of machining centre, in the 4EX-R-BL we have designed a model that is able to produce all helixes from horizontal to vertical, for helical rotors, infinitive lead blowers, helical blowers, compressor rotors and vacuum pumps,” adds Mark Curran. “This significant level of versatility makes the 4EX-R-BL well suited to manufacturers who perhaps make different rotor types and therefore need considerable flexibility in their machining technologies, as well as providing a new, highly superior manufacturing solution for producers of Roots-type blowers.”

Incorporating the brands of Holroyd, Holroyd Precision Rotors, Binns & Berry and Crawford Swift, PTG has established itself at the forefront of high precision machine tool design, build and supply. The PTG range includes ultra precision grinding machines for rotor, thread and gear operations; rotor milling machines; heavy duty lathes; deep hole boring machines; friction stir welding machines and special purpose machine tools for the manufacture of precision components. Industrial sectors served range from aerospace, medical and mould tool & die to marine, power generation, mining, oil & gas, steel, high end and heavy automotive.

Results positive for Stockport College

Students and staff at Stockport College are celebrating another year of positive results in GCSE and functional skills Maths and English along with some impressive 100% pass rates across a wide range of Vocational and Technical courses.

Many of the students sitting exams were re-taking their GCSE maths and/or English as they had not achieved a grade C at school, whilst others were studying functional skills. Pass rates for Maths have risen by over 4% and the pass rate for English is showing an improving trend.

Yanli Volavola, who commuted from Macclesfield to come to Stockport College, passed her English GCSE which will now allow her to continue onto university and study for a degree in adult nursing at Chester University. She said of her results: “I couldn’t believe it when I opened my results, I was really surprised. I wasn’t really confident because the exam was difficult and because of the new grading of GCSEs.”

It’s not the first time that Yanli has experienced the nerves of results day as last year she received her maths and Science results, gaining an A* in maths.

A large number of students excelled in a range of vocational courses with 100% pass rate which included: Art & Design, Beauty Therapy, Professional Cookery, Health, Fitness & Exercise Instruction, Hairdressing and Performing Engineering Operations.

Stockport College Deputy Principal, Amanda Kennedy, said: “We are very proud of our students who have done brilliantly. Many students come to us to improve their grades, follow their career aspirations, or further their studies, and it is often a life changing journey for them. On behalf of the whole College, I would like to wish our students all the best for the future and good luck with achieving their next goals. I would like to thank the staff in the College for helping the students to gain the success they deserve”.

One-Billion-Pound Transformation Programme Takes off After Manchester Airport Has bumper Bank Holiday Weekend

Manchester Airport has unveiled the first part of its £1bn transformation programme as the summer holiday season comes to an end.

Some passengers passing through Terminal 2 will now use a new temporary gate lounge that can hold up to 650 passengers. The first passengers used the lounge this week and after successful trials, more flights will now use the facility. It will be in operation for up to two years and the wraps have been taken off the new building a little over a month after work on the project began.

The first two passengers Mr and Mrs Raistrick were jetting off to Rhodes with Monarch Airlines and were rewarded with a VIP airport experience for their next holiday.

The new gate lounge will allow the west half of Terminal 2 to be completely demolished and rebuilt whilst the airfield remains in full operation. The new terminal building is expected to be operational by 2019.

Thanks to ceiling high windows, the new lounge provides passengers with a close-up view of the airfield. The facility has also been decorated with a timeline that tells the history of the airport as well as information on the transformation programme.

The area also sees new enlarged toilet cubicles and new wayfinding branding including signage that will be replicated throughout the terminal once the transformation programme is complete.

The opening of the new lounge comes a month after a visit from the Secretary of State for Transport, Rt Hon Chris Grayling MP to see the start of the works. As well as launching the airport’s transformation, he also launched the UK’s national aviation strategy where he positioned Manchester as “the UK’s other hub airport.”

Rob Stewart, Delivery Director for MAN-TP, said: “The opening of the lounge is the first milestone for the project since work started. It will allow us to demolish the western side of Terminal 2 and passengers will soon see cranes in place starting those works. The new facility has been finished to a high standard and it is great to use the space to tell passengers travelling to destinations ranging from Beijing to San Francisco about the history of Manchester Airport and our plans for the future.

“Excitement is really building about the changes taking place at the airport and we are looking forward to seeing it develop in the weeks and months ahead.”

The first part of the transformation programme comes after the airport’s busiest ever Bank Holiday Weekend, with more than 420,000 passengers passing through the terminals over the three days.

Time-lapse footage of the building of a new gating lounge at T2, Manchester Airport can be viewed here.
