Exceptional customer service sees Bolton-firm Stanmore win prestigious national insurance award for its nursery cover as the company eyes further market expansion in 2018

Bolton-based insurance broker Stanmore, who insure more than 1,800 nurseries around the country (around 13% of the UK’s nurseries) through its dot2dot nursery scheme, says the win of a prestigious national industry award is recognition of the exceptional customer service it provides – with a 94% customer retention rate – and which will help it increase its market share even further in 2018.

Stanmore won ‘Schemes Broker of the Year’ at the prestigious Insurance Times Awards which took place at the 02 in London on Thursday, beating 11 other big industry names to the prize.

In particular, Stanmore was praised for the customer service it provides for nursery owners through its dot2dot scheme. In summing up the judges for the awards said “Operating in a competitive market, Stanmore managed to retain 94% of its clients and grew its book of business significantly. The business operates in partnership with its clients and has forged a series of third party relationships to truly help and assist their customers. The judges were impressed by the passion of the presentation and how the broker uses blogs and online content to provide a consultation on risk to their clients.”

The scheme, first set up by Director Jackie Hyde 14 years ago and refined and improved ever since then, helps take the worry out of running a nursery.

Not only does dot2dot provide insurance cover, it also offers access to added support and many extra solutions that nursery providers might find they need – including specialist legal advice and support if a safeguarding allegation is made. Their network of partners have been specially selected by dot2dot to not only allay the fears and concerns of the nursery owners, but also to help reduce the instance of claims – protecting both the nursery business and the children they care for. Each nursery is allocated a dedicated account manager to ensure they receive the personalised support they need.

Law firm extends joint social mobility mentoring scheme with Manchester Met

Manchester law firm Browne Jacobson has extended its joint mentoring scheme with Manchester Metropolitan’s Law School, as the firm continues its mission to tackle socio-economic disadvantage in the legal profession.

The pioneering initiative, which was successfully piloted in 2015, has been extremely well received since its inception with students from across all years of the University’s LLB programme applying. The scheme was highly commended in last year’s Manchester Legal awards and shortlisted in the 2017 ENEI and UK Social Mobility Awards.

The scheme, which is delivered by qualified lawyers and members of the firm’s HR team, is aimed at preparing students from disadvantaged backgrounds for a career in law by providing dedicated mentoring support they would otherwise not have access to.

This year, 13 new law undergraduates have been selected to take part in the scheme. These new mentees will be matched with the right mentors at Browne Jacobson who will share their experiences and act as career counsellors to help mentees achieve their full potential during crucial stages of becoming a newly qualified solicitor.

The programme will also deliver CV and assessment centre workshops as well as guest lectures for core modules on topics such as resilience to help develop key employability skills and competencies needed in today’s labour market.

Nichola Evans, partner and architect of the scheme, said: “Social mobility in the legal profession has changed little in over 30 years and Browne Jacobson is strongly committed to addressing this issue. The feedback from the last two schemes has been very positive, and we are already starting to see the impact the initiative is having in widening access and opportunities in the legal profession. Manchester Airport’s Dragons’ Den style enterprise competition raises record breaking sum for local hospitals

Students from St Antony’s Catholic College in Urmston beat 19 other schools from across Greater Manchester to be recognised by business leaders for their ingenuity in Manchester Airport’s Dragons’ Den competition.

Competing schools from across the region gathered for a ‘Grand Final’ at the Holiday Inn Express, Manchester Airport and pitched their products to the Dragons, presenting a summary of productivity, finance and lessons learnt as a result of the experience. The Dragons were made up of representatives from locally based businesses including Cathay Pacific, Marriott Hotels and John Lewis.

The students from St Antony’s Catholic College raised an incredible £6181.28 through the sale of their imaginative and poignant Manchester bee tree decoration. They created the wooden Manchester bee decoration after being challenged to create a Christmas present that could be sold for £5 or less.

The winning team enjoyed a VIP trip to see Elf the Musical, where they were picked up from school by limousine before going for dinner and being taken to see the hit festive musical.

Fiona Wright, Head Teacher of winning school St Anthony’s Catholic College said: “The students have worked so hard, devoting many hours to the project both inside and outside of school. The staggering amount they’ve raised is testament to this and all of us at the school are immensely proud.

“The whole experience has been fantastic for them, and I’m sure they’ve come away with some invaluable skills for the future”.

 In second place was Priestnall High School who raised a whopping £4345.22. Third place went to Wilmslow High who raised £2097.30.

In total, a record breaking amount of £20,234.61 was raised by the 20 schools taking part and will go to Hope House Children’s Hospice, Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital, East Cheshire Hospice, St Ann’s Hospice and Francis House.

Wendy Sinfield, Community Relations Manager at Manchester Airport, said: “There were some fantastic ideas this year, with real originality from the teams and I’m overjoyed by the incredible amount they’ve managed to raise for charity.

“The Dragons’ Den competition is not only fun for the students, but gives them skills and knowledge that will help with their future careers.

Sale Sharks and Seashell Trust announce new Partnership to get students playing Rugby

Sale Sharks will deliver a rugby programme for children and young adults with complex and severe learning disabilities in early 2018.

The 10-week initiative between Sale Sharks Community Trust and Cheadle Hulme charity Seashell Trust forms part of the ‘In the Pack’ programme which has been a huge hit across the north west since it was launched in November 2016.

With the Seashell Trust logo featuring on Sale Sharks’ away shirt for the 2017/18 season, Community Trust Inclusion Officer, Vicky Irwin, welcomed the extension of the partnership.

She said: “We are very pleased to work with Seashell Trust as part of ‘In the Pack’.

“During the first 12 months of the programme Coaches from Sale Sharks Community Trust have worked with almost 2,000 individuals, with a total of 1,700 having a disability or additional need in eight venues.

“Our coaches deliver a variety of activities, including tag rugby, wheelchair tag rugby, mixed ability rugby and walking rugby to people of all ages and abilities across the north west.”

Vicky said ‘In the Pack’ is tailored for people who have additional and special needs, both physical and learning impairments, and aims to encourage people to become more active in an inclusive way.

“Sale Sharks’ first team stars George Nott and Halani Aulika will continue their roles as Disability Ambassadors into the new year,” said Vicky, “and will be joined by several volunteers from the Academy to deliver the 10-week Seashell Trust Programme.

George, along with teammates Jonny Leota, David Seymour and Alexander Tarus visited excited youngsters from the Seashell Trust earlier this month.

He said: “I’ve personally supported the Community Trust’s work in disability sport for three years now, so I’ve seen for myself what a difference rugby can make to peoples’ lives. We are all very much looking forward to the start of this programme.”

Stephen Pearson, Seashell’s CADS Development Officer said: “Opportunities to partner with a club like Sale Sharks which has such a great community programme do not come along very often.  It’s so important to provide new and diverse activities to stretch, challenge and motivate our children and young people.  They can’t wait for them to return.”

Loganair launches three new routes from Manchester to the Scottish islands

Loganair is launching summer routes from Manchester to three remote Scottish island groups.

From late June until early September, Mancunians will be able to access direct flights to the north isles of Orkney and Shetland, and the Western Isles of the Outer Hebrides.

The Orkney route begins of June 22, with flights both ways taking place on Mondays and Fridays.   The launch date of the new service coincides with the world-famous St Magnus Festival in Orkney – sponsored by Loganair – which celebrates the islands’ rich cultural heritage through a renowned programme of music concerts, many of which are held in Kirkwall’s spectacular 12th century St Magnus Cathedral.

Services to Shetland commence on Saturday June 23 and will run through to September 1.   The first ever non-stop flights from Manchester to Sumburgh will offer excellent access to the rugged scenery of Shetland and the islands’ incredible hospitality and range of scenery.

In a similar move, the first ever non-stop services from Manchester to Stornoway in the Western Isles will operate from Saturday June 23 to September 1.   The 95-minute flight will bring new levels of convenience to customers flying to the Western Isles, and Loganair is already looking at means to add a second weekly flight on this unique route during the 2018 holidays.

Connections to all three islands are available on other days of the week via Loganair’s frequent jet service from Manchester to Inverness which are carefully designed to connect with its onward services to all three islands at Inverness.   With an increasing trend towards holidaying in the UK as a result of foreign exchange rate changes and security concerns, the airline is expecting a bumper year for domestic tourism and is introducing these new services to improve customer choice.

Loganair is also adding a new service from Manchester to the Gateway to the Fjords – the Norwegian city of Bergen – in 2018.   The one-stop service will operate on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays throughout the year, complementing other airlines’ less frequent non-stop flights which only operate for part of the year.  Flights will have a short stop at Inverness but will be operated by the same Embraer 145 jet aircraft from Manchester to Bergen.

Scotland’s Airline also serves Manchester from Glasgow, Inverness and Norwich, with frequent weekday flights on all three routes.  It started flights in its own right, after over two decades flying under franchise agreements with other airlines, on September 1 2017.

Managing director Jonathan Hinkles said: “It’s always a pleasure to introduce new routes, whether year-round or seasonal. Manchester has become very important for us, and our new non-stop links from Manchester to the three main island groups to which we fly are an exciting new development.  The flights will provide direct access to the islands and will also enable island residents to fly to Manchester to access the growing range of onward flights available as Manchester’s status as an international hub goes from strength to strength.”

Julian Carr, Manchester Airport’s Aviation Director, said: “It’s great to see after just a few months Loganair is expanding its operations out of Manchester with several new routes.

“Not only do these open up Scotland to the people of the North, they also provide direct easy access for Scots looking to visit the excellent city of Manchester and all it has to offer.

“We look forward to the routes commencing and seeing Loganair continue to grow out of the UK’s global gateway in the North.”

O’Neill’s Pubs Unveils Craic-ing New Printworks Bar

Manchester’s brand new Irish pub, O’Neill’s Printworks, opened to guests on this week following four weeks of extensive works.

O’Neill’s pubs are renowned as a hub for live music and sports, and their new Printworks bar will offer a comforting food menu for visitors to enjoy at the easy-going, Irish style tavern. Guests will also be able to tuck into freshly made stone-baked pizzas, 21 day aged steaks, mouth-watering ‘low and slow’ meat and rib options, as well as mix & match tapas including drunken mushrooms, pulled brisket croquettes and buttermilk boneless chicken pieces.

Bury continues to offer excellent residential buy-to-let opportunities

Bury properties are continuing to see increased interest from investors, looking to take advantage of the high rental yields on offer, according to John Pye Property.

Figures from the Land Registry earlier this year suggested that the ‘Manchester property boom’ is spreading to surrounding boroughs, with Bury overtaking the city centre for year-on-year price growth in July.

As a result, property auction specialist John Pye Property has seen a surge in demand for properties in Bury and other Greater Manchester boroughs as investors look for the best return on their money.

Richard Reed, head of property at John Pye Property, said: “Manchester has always been one of the go-to places for property investment, but we’re starting to see interest from buyers spreading outwards.

“We currently have a block of five self-contained flats up for auction this month (18 and 19 December), which offer a fantastic return on investment for a buyer.

“All of the flats are currently occupied, producing an income of £1,800 pcm. Based on the guide price of £150,000, this gives a gross annual yield of 14.40%.”

Located on Walmersley Road, the flats are located in an area of high rental demand.

AJ Bell profits surge following year of strong growth

Annual profits at Manchester-headquartered AJ Bell have surged 29 per cent as the investment platform’s assets under administration have risen to nearly £40bn.

Pre-tax profits for the year to September 30 2017 grew to £21.7m from £16.8m as the company continued its strong growth of customer numbers.

The company provides online pension, investment and stockbroking services to customers across the UK.

Retail customers increased by 17 per cent to 164,557, while assets under administration rose 25 per cent to £39.8bn from £31.8bn.

The increase in assets under administration was driven primarily by £6.4bn of new business, up 78 per cent on the previous year’s figure of £3.6bn.

Revenue grew 17 per cent to £75.6m from £64.5m and AJ Bell is continuing its progressive dividend policy with a 10 per cent increase to 28.25p a share, equating to a total shareholder pay-out of £11.6m.

AJ Bell’s figures also absorb the cost of moving into its new head office at Salford Quays in the summer, providing the necessary space to support the company’s rapid growth.

It employs nearly 700 people, most of whom are based at the new HQ at Exchange Quay.

In November the company announced it would be bringing a further 100 jobs at the site by moving its stockbroking services from Tunbridge Wells.

The company is benefiting from the growth in popularity of self-invested personal pensions (SIPPs), a particular strength for AJ Bell, as well as low-cost, ready-made investment portfolios that were launched this year.

Andy Bell, chief executive at AJ Bell, said: “We are pleased to report another year of strong growth for the business, both in terms of the number of customers using our investment platform and our financial performance.

“To support that growth, we moved into our new head office in Salford Quays during the year and we are in the process of making that the main hub for all our core operations.

“As we go through that process in 2018 we will be recruiting locally to continue building a highly-skilled workforce who can help us achieve our vision of being the easiest investment platform to use in the UK.”

The Aveda salon, owned by creative director Craig Stonehouse and his partner Craig Harris, is based on Library Street, Wigan.

Craig Stonehouse will be leading the team, bringing 15 years of experience of hairdressing having worked at leading exclusive salons across London, as well as London Fashion Week.
