New appointment underlines API Group’s international focus

Manchester-based brand empowerment specialist API Group has strengthened its presence in the US with the appointment of Michael Frederick to Business Unit President and General Manager API Americas.

Based from API’s US headquarters in Lawrence, Kansas, Michael will oversee the company’s North American foils and laminates businesses and will be responsible for driving forward API’s long-term growth strategy in the US.

Michael holds more than 30 years’ experience in the paper and packaging industry and was previously President and CEO of privately-owned Commercial Lithographing Company that specialises in labels, greetings cards and envelopes. Prior to this, Michael was Vice President of Huhtamaki’s Food Service packaging business in North America.

With many years of knowledge and experience in sales and market development for the paperboard, folding carton and packaging industry, as well as creating new product lines to secure extensive revenue growth, Michael joins at a time when API has made significant investments in its US capability as a platform for growth.

Manchester highlighted as a thriving place to do business after City Lord Mayor visit

With thriving financial and professional services, FinTech, property and e-commerce sectors, our city is being noticed by those in the capital as a place to do business, and this is something pro-manchester was excited to present to the Lord Mayor during his visit.

The Lord Mayor had a jam-packed schedule, with many of Manchester’s business community seizing the opportunity to highlight what a great city we have. There was a wide range of activity including our thriving FinTech hub, the growing creative and digital sector, our skills agenda, the Internationalisation Strategy and of course the importance of the financial and professional sector in the city.

The Lord Mayor began his day meeting with the Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham alongside pro-manchester chief executive, John Ashcroft and pro-manchester chair, Alistair Cree. In this private meeting, they discussed how both London and Manchester can boost international trade links, collaborate on FinTech initiatives and upskill a talented workforce for the future.

Following this, FinTech was the topic of discussion when the Lord Mayor took to the stage at The Hilton Hotel. A discussion on Manchester’s growing FinTech community was hosted by the Lord Mayor, in a sold-out lunch organised by pro-manchester. Here, the main discussions explored how FinTech is flourishing in our region, and Manchester’s reputation as a city of innovation.

The Internationalisation Strategy was later discussed at length in a closed roundtable following the lunch. The strategy sets out a three-year framework, which will be worth over £2.2bn to the region’s economy. Here the Lord Mayor met with representatives from BNY Mellon, Midas, Manchester Airport Group, the city region’s top three Universities; University of Manchester, Manchester Metropolitan University and the University of Salford and more.

This strategy really highlights the collaborative nature of Manchester’s business community, with the three universities all working together to create the very best outcome.

The final event on the Lord Mayor’s agenda was a private dinner with our region’s business leaders. This dinner gave him the opportunity to discuss the City of London Corporation regional engagement strategy with key pro-manchester members to seek a local perspective on a wide range of topics, including the northern powerhouse, devolution, Brexit and the EU perspective on FPS regulation.

Greater Manchester is proud to be a collaborative hub for businesses. It is not a place where rivalries are created, but where co-operative businesses are born.

Of the visit, pro-manchester Deputy CEO, Sam Booth said: “The pro-manchester team was delighted to welcome the Lord Mayor of the City of London to our fabulous city to highlight just some of the excellent work going on in our thriving region.

“Manchester is a unique place to do business, and we are very proud to represent the business community here.

Sigma appointed to deliver digital excellence for Housing Trust

Leading user experience (UX) agency, Sigma, has been appointed by Macclesfield-based Peaks & Plains Housing Trust to deliver a refreshed and improved website with a focus on user experience.

Peaks & Plains, a social landlord which manages over 5,000 homes across Cheshire and the High Peak, provides good quality, affordable and secure tenancies to individuals and families. Through its newly-announced five year plan, the Trust aims to continue improving lives by being a great landlord to its tenants across all properties in the region. An updated digital offering will play a key role in this, allowing users easier access to the website and the full range of Peaks & Plains services.

Sigma has a longstanding relationship with Peaks & Plains, having designed the Trust’s website, intranet and supported on a range of digital initiatives since 2012.

This new brief calls on Sigma to modernise and update the site, by completing two key phases. The first is a full ‘discovery and design’ stage, in which its team of UX specialists will facilitate a range of workshops with staff, create an interactive design prototype and carry out usability testing with customers to make sure that the new site addresses the needs of the tenants, as well as the Trust’s business requirements. This user-centred approach is tried and tested by Sigma, and allows rapid changes to the design early in the project lifecycle.

The second stage will see Sigma implement these designs through a phase which includes front and back-end development, testing across the website’s functionality and accessibility, alongside cross-browser/platform testing. The site will be built using Umbraco, an open-source web content management system, and integrated with online self-service functionality. Sigma will then complete a thorough training and handover session with the Trust’s staff.

The project aims to ensure that the Peaks & Plains’ website facilitates excellent customer experience, whilst making it quick and easy for tenants to find relevant information. It will also ensure that key calls to action – for example online chat, booking and tracking a repair, reporting a problem and accessing a range of customer services – are made more visible. This will take a mobile-first approach, whilst using video and imagery more boldly to bring the brand to life online.

Simon Wissink, account manager at Sigma, said: “We can’t wait to get started on this project. Not only is it a logical next step in our ongoing work with Peaks & Plains, but it also builds on our credentials as an agency with a strong ethical and socially responsible vein running through both our culture and philosophies. St Ambrose on track with Morson Vital Training to inspire future female rail engineers

A group of Year 10 and 12 girls from St Ambrose Barlow RC High & 6th Form in Swinton, Manchester, took to the track to get a taste of what a career in rail engineering can offer them, thanks to Salford-headquartered Morson Vital Training.

The #CareersOnTrack event aimed to address the skills shortage and lack of diversity in the rail industry by shining a spotlight on the exciting diversity of careers and pathways into engineering, whilst breaking down the stereotypes that prevent females from entering the sector.

The young girls aged 14 to 17 spent the afternoon at Morson Vital Training’s education hub in Salford, where they tried on full PPE before stepping foot on a replica outdoor rail test track to learn more about the industry, the equipment used and the different roles.

The girls also stepped on board the Vital Safety Unit; a fleet of vehicles that travel the breadth of the country delivering safety talks to engineers out on site, and heard the inspiring stories of employees throughout the Morson Group and their pathways into the industry, be that apprenticeships, traineeships, graduate opportunities and more.

Assistant head of 6th form at St Ambrose Barlow RC High & 6th form, Sally Cheshire, said: “The afternoon was truly successful for all the girls. It showed them the opportunities available within the rail sector and helped them release that there are career paths for them to follow in this sector.

“It was such an insightful afternoon for all involved and we hope to do it again to inspire more students. A true representation of a local employer engaging with the employees of the future.”

Paige, a year 12 student at St Ambrose, added: “It has opened my eyes into other project management opportunities, as it’s an area I’d never considered before but is certainly one I’ll be looking into more for my future career after 6th form.”

The UK has the lowest percentage of female engineers in Europe, at fewer than 10%. Brexit is also likely to create a further 10% reduction in available rail labour, which is already suffering increasing competition from the aligning delivery schedules of major infrastructure projects, such as HS2, Hinkley Point C, airport expansions and highway schemes.

Morson Vital Training, part of the Morson Group, delivers a range of professional training programmes, particularly apprenticeships, to combat this and build the future pipeline of industry talent.

The specialist rail training provider has eight education centres nationally, including Manchester, Glasgow, Canning Town and Doncaster. To date, Morson Vital Training is the first and only training provider to receive the NSAR (National Skills Academy for Rail) Platinum Award.

The Group’s technical recruitment arm, Morson International, has also pledged to double the number of female engineering contractors that it employs by 2020. With thousands of specialist female contractors working across the globe, the number of female engineers vs males sat at just 7.5% when the pledge was made in June 2017.

Andrew Robinson, training support manager at Morson Vital Training, added: “The young girls were a credit to their school and it was superb to change their opinions about what a job in rail engineering looks like by bringing these careers to life.

“We pride ourselves on breaking down the outdated views within our industry, to build a highly skilled and diverse future pipeline that doesn’t just cover gender but all areas of diversity. Gender, race, age, sexuality or background should never play a part in limiting a person’s ambition as there are so many career pathways within our industry.

“With major projects like HS2 soon ramping up in its delivery, it’s never been a more exciting time to work in rail. These girls will be the future engineers delivering the digital railway and we hope the day inspired them, their friends and their family to enter engineering, especially when more than half of all females currently enter the sector through a family connection.”

The event was also held in partnership with The Girls’ Network, of which the Morson Group is a partner of the charity’s Salford mentoring programme. The Girls’ Network raises the aspirations of young girls from disadvantaged backgrounds by partnering them with positive female mentors over a 12-month period to become more ambitious and reach their aspirations.

Charlie Ledley, network manager at The Girls’ Network, concluded: “This event has provided the girls from St Ambrose an insight into the wealth of possibilities that a career in rail engineering could bring them.

“Events like this are vital for breaking down stereotypes that often can discourage young talented girls from embarking on certain career paths and this session really challenged those conversations. We are extremely thankful to Morson Vital Training for organising and delivering such an informative, engaging and inspiring afternoon.”

LIG Nanowise completes £2.6m seed funding round

IG Nanowise Ltd, which specialises in developing super-resolution microscope technology and applying revolutionary and patented microsphere lens technologies to industry and academia, has announced the completion of its seed funding round, raising £2.6m.

LIG Nanowise has developed an accessible super-resolution imaging technique for advanced materials, semiconductors, metal alloys, and more. Its specialist technology transforms light microscopes, the most popular form of microscopy in the world, into ultra-high-resolution systems for the first time, through the record-breaking performance of its microsphere lenses. The company’s  NANOPSIS M microscope, allows for real-time, non-destructive imaging at super-resolution in full colour, democratising super-resolution capabilities in the scientific community, stretching what were thought to be the limits of optical microscopy

The financing, which was led by Hong Kong based venture capital investor Phoenix Bridge, alongside private investors, will go towards expanding the company’s manufacturing capability and international sales network, helping to deliver its world-leading NANOPSIS M microscope to new prospects across industry and academia. A proportion of the money will also help to fund continued R&D efforts in multiple sectors, and further develop the organisation’s novel nano-patterning system, reinforcing its position as the industry leader in applied microsphere technologies and a key disruptor in the optics space..

As well as being an accessible super-resolution option, the company’s patented SMAL technology reveals the nanoscopic world in previously unseen ways. With this technique, there is no need for the traditional coating of a sample, which is required when using a common electron or atomic force microscope, this technology enables users to see objects smaller than 200 nm, or the size of a large virus, in high-resolution and full colour.

LIG Nanowise’s technology has the potential to open up new vistas of research for super-materials such as graphene and semiconductors, providing a new, synergistic imaging technique to integrate into existing imaging protocols. Its microsphere lens technology has further far-reaching applications in areas such as industrial nanoprecision laser etching of surfaces, for applications such as bank note security and microelectronics.

Shoosmiths’ national plot sales offering strengthened in Manchester with new team

Shoosmiths has further strengthened its national plot sales offering by appointing a new plot sales team based in the Manchester office, which will offer a seamless end-to-end service to residential developers in the region.

The move is also the logical next step in the extension of the firm’s rapidly-growing residential development practice, which acts for many of the UK’s best-known housebuilders, to cover all parts of the UK.

Heading up the new team in Manchester is Tony Nutting. Previously the head of Ward Hadaway’s Manchester plot sales team, Tony brings with him many years of experience in the North West property sector. The ‘Gareth Effect’ sees record numbers of students sign up for football coaching degrees

The success of the England football team and its young manager Gareth Southgate has sparked a rush among students to sign up for football coaching degrees, according to academic experts.

Bosses at the University Campus of Football Business (UCFB), which runs courses from bases at Wembley Stadium and Etihad Stadium in Manchester, say they’ve seen a huge spike in applications for places on their football coaching degrees since the start of the World Cup campaign.

Academics at UCFB today reported a 72% increase in applications for football coaching degree courses since the World Cup kicked off, versus this time last year – with the majority of that surge landing in the last three weeks.

Since the World Cup began, students applying to football coaching degrees at UCFB’s Etihad Campus have doubled year-on-year. And at UCFB’s Wembley campus there has been an increase of 56% in the same period.

There has also been a 173% boost in people expressing an interest in studying a football coaching degree at UCFB since the World Cup started.

Brendan Flood, chairman of UCFB, co-founder of Orlando City FC and director at Burnley FC, attributes the dramatic increase to the ‘Gareth Effect’.

Brendan said: “The England football team has rejuvenated this country’s interest in international football with its endeavours at the World Cup. And, clearly, Gareth Southgate has had a similar impact on those football-loving students who are considering a career in the game.

“We’ve seen record numbers of applications for places on UCFB courses to study football coaching degrees across both campuses at the Etihad in Manchester and Wembley – with a big surge coming since the England team began its World Cup adventure.

“Gareth Southgate has quite rightly been lauded for his attitude to the game and the refreshing way he has brought together this England football team. That ‘Gareth Effect’ is there for everybody to see in the record number of students now wanting to get into the football coaching side of the game. Who knows – one of those studying on a UCFB coaching course could well be a future England manager.”

Gareth Southgate is no stranger to UCFB and its students. The England manager gave an inspirational guest lecture at their Wembley campus late last year while Belgium manager Roberto Martinez did the same this year at UCFB Etihad Campus.

Regular UCFB coaching lecturers include well-established Premier League veterans like Mike Phelan – former assistant manager to Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, and Mike Walsh – former youth academy coach at Manchester United, Manchester City, Preston North End and Blackpool.

UCFB students have been involved in coaching work while they study at Premier League, English Football League and National League clubs and are also assisted in gaining their FA Level 2 and UEFA B licence whilst studying at UCFB. UCFB will now deliver FA level 1 qualification courses at its Wembley and Etihad campuses for the first time this summer.

UCFB has secured over 2,000 student placements since its inception in 2011, and over 450 leading organisations across the world of football, sport and events have partnered to provide these placements.

There are approximately 2,000 students currently studying across UCFB’s campuses. An incredible 94% of UCFB graduates are in employment or further education with just under two-thirds of those working in sport.

UCFB was recently ranked as the best higher education institution in the UK for employment prospects at the University Compare Annual Student Experience Awards 2017, based on 10,000 graduate reviews from around the country.

UCFB graduates are currently employed at the majority of Premier League clubs, including Manchester City and Manchester United, with numerous ex-students in roles at The Football Association, the Scottish Professional Football League, dozens of English Football League clubs, several county football associations and other sports governing bodies including the Rugby Football League and British Cycling.

The Village gets ‘ultra-fast’ internet in time for more than 180,000 visitors expected at this year’s famous Manchester Pride festival

Visitors to Manchester’s famous Pride Festival in August can expect ‘ultrafast’ broadband thanks to a fast-growing Manchester-based technology firm.

GLEEfi (Gay Lesbian Everyone Everywhere) is the new superfast Wi-Fi broadband product being installed through 1GB internet pipes based in key locations in the village by business support firm OneTek Business Solutions.

It means visitors to the world famous Gay Village can expect speeds up to 1GB, putting it in the top 1 per cent of internet speeds in the UK. Currently, public WiFi in the village runs at around 2MB – 6MB meaning that speeds are sluggish during peak times.

The Manchester Pride Festival runs over the August Bank Holiday weekend and features performances from artists including Pete Tong, 808 State and Alexandra Burke.

Davina White, Business Development Manager at OneTek, said: “One of the longstanding issues in the village has been the slow, snail-paced internet speeds especially during peak hours and events like the Manchester Pride Festival. We are delighted to have worked with some iconic venues and business owners in the village to install and deliver as a community based project and offer access to more than 100,000 people at Manchester Pride and throughout the rest of the year, ultrafast connectivity.

“Every business relies on reliable excellent connectivity especially where point-of-sale equipment relies on it. We are on a mission to roll out our ultrafast WiFi solution to other events across the UK. We are already in talks with other LGBT specific festivals, music festivals and communities.

OneTek was launched in 2008 by Lee Donaghey and provides WiFi solutions to villages, towns and community spaces across the country and as well as IT support to businesses of all sizes. The company head quartered in Winsford, Cheshire has offices in Stoke and Stockport.

Access to GLEEfi for the whole Pride weekend will cost £5 (£4 if bought online before) with proceeds being shared by venues, OneTek and 5 per cent each to four Manchester-based charities popular in the LGBT community: George House Trust, The Proud Trust, Sparkle and the Albert Kennedy Trust.

Phil Burke, Chair of the Village Business Association, said: “This is a very welcome community initiative that benefits everyone. As well as visitors, local businesses in the village and charities close to our hearts will all reap the rewards. Internet speed has been an issue in the village for quite some time now and we are supportive of new initiatives to give village-based businesses a commercial advantage.”

We expect to serve more than 10,000 drinks over the weekend and being able to process card payments swiftly and safely is a priority for us.”

 

Back to The Garden confirms partnership with The Garden in Hale

Underlining its commitment to great food and nutrition, the McGoff Group has partnered with earth-friendly eatery The Garden, in Hale, to design a series of special menus for its new day nursery, Back to the Garden, which opens in Altrincham in August.

Located on Sinderland Road in Broadheath, Back to the Garden is an exciting new concept in childcare that has been developed in association with Stewart and Jeannie Pickering, the experienced husband and wife team formerly behind the kidsunlimited brand.

With places for children from three months to five years old, Back to the Garden will offer a child-led, active learning environment with an emphasis on outdoor play in a natural setting away from the pollution associated with being too close to main roads.

One of the cornerstones of the nursery’s philosophy is a focus on nutrition.  Working closely with director, head chef and co-founder at The Garden, Amy Shepherdson, Back to the Garden’s Jeannie Pickering will create a delicious, locally-sourced and organic (where possible) menu that incorporates fresh, plant-based produce, meat and fish and will change seasonally throughout the year.

Jeannie Pickering comments: “I have very much admired what Amy and the team have achieved with The Garden and their ethos in making healthy and nutritious food more creative, accessible and enjoyable for people of all ages.  Especially important for children, the food that we eat has a direct impact on our health, our emotions, our ability to process information and the overall balance within our bodies and children need to eat well to learn and develop fully.  I’m excited to be working with Amy and look forward to devising a menu of delicious and appetising dishes that children can’t wait to eat.”

Where possible, all produce on the menu at Back to the Garden will be organic, free range or locally grown.  Dishes will be homemade and incorporate plenty of healthy grains.  Through the changing seasons, children will be introduced to an eclectic mix of tastes, textures and nutrient dense superfoods, helping them to become accustomed to eating a variety of nutritious foods.

“Our aim is for the food to be both exceptionally nutritious and delicious,” concludes Jeannie, “So much so, that the parents want to stay and eat it too.”
