Meet the MCR Network Celebrating After Ten Years Improving the Lives of Thousands Across the City company set to scale up its international business

A Manchester networking group that has brought together thousands of people is marking an incredible 10 years in business.

Created in 2013 by co-founders Rich Tyrrell and Andrew Bennie, Manchester Young Professionals is an inclusive and accessible network for people in their 20s and 30s who work in the city, designed to connect like-minded individuals while offering key contacts and development opportunities.

From welcoming just 20 people at their debut event in 2013 to packing out over 100 venues across Greater Manchester and selling 14,422 tickets to date, their offering includes an average of 2 events a week at popular social gatherings at ‘hotspot’ locations such as Albert Schloss and Firefly, creative classes and rapidly growing health and wellbeing experiences.

Whilst bringing together young professionals, MYP also takes pride in supporting the local economy, as these partnering businesses benefit from a surge in visibility and revenue as event hosts.

Looking back on everything they have achieved in the past decade, Rich commented: “It’s been an incredible ten years.”

“We’re incredibly proud of all we’ve done and what the team have achieved – for something that started from this feeling of isolation after moving to Manchester and to see it grow into a group that brings people from all over the city together. It feels really special.”

As well as a packed social calendar, MYP also offers a mentoring programme to equip Manchester’s young workers with the skills they need to succeed, matching budding talent with more established professionals.

Alexia Holt, marketing manager, 27, who took part in the scheme back in 2021 was paired with Alex Di Guiseppe, the EU Senior Brand Manager at Kellogg’s. Alexia commented:

“It was a big honour to learn from him. This led to my eventual recognition, nomination and win of a Most Confident Performer for that fiscal year – it was one of my proudest achievements and I will always thank Alex and the mentoring scheme for the experience.”

With the aim of making Manchester a more sociable, engaged and progressive city, co-founders Rich and Andrew are keen to give back to the city they love so much. Their events also better lives beyond a professional capacity, they have raised an incredible £32k for multiple local and national charities such as Forever Manchester, Beechwood Cancer Care, Manchester Mind and The Prince’s Trust.

Through the years of the pandemic, MYP were keen to keep their community spirit alive and created a running club which is now over 1,000 members strong.

It’s one of many MYP schemes that has invigorated people’s passions – something that 25-year-old Abbie Smyth, from Corby says has helped her rediscover her love for running.

“I got into running during lockdown, but after the world returned to normal I struggled to find the spark again – it wasn’t fun to run laps around the city alone.”

“The MYP run club gave me the opportunity to meet new people and it felt enjoyable again… We recently ran the Manchester 10k together and we’re now planning to challenge ourselves to the Manchester Half Marathon in October!”

With their vast variety of events, MYP are keen to welcome even more Manchester residents. Having started as a small operation solely run by Andrew and Rich when they first moved to Manchester, the operation has now grown into a 14-member team who work tirelessly to get people from different backgrounds involved and excited about their industries.

“Our volunteers are champions for MYP within their industries,” explains Rich.

“They’re integral to our process and spreading the word about events to get people from different backgrounds and sectors involved – which is part of the reason we’re growing day by day.”

As they celebrate their achievements, MYP holds an exciting vision for the future: expanding their reach beyond Manchester’s borders and sharing their successful model of community-building and positive change to cities worldwide.

After an incredible decade of making a positive impact, inspiring passions, and raising substantial funds for charitable causes, it looks like it’s onward and upwards for Manchester’s Young Professionals.

Has Manchester Proven There’s A New Target Audience For Bingo?

Let’s be honest: when we hear the word “bingo”, we all know what we picture. A large room, full of people of the older generation, with a slightly over-the-top caller trying desperately to rhyme the number “55”.

But, in 2023, this vision couldn’t be any more wrong. Today, the excitement and buzz around bingo has been ramped up to about eleven – another number that’s tricky to rhyme! – and it’s become one of the go-to games to play on a night out or a night in.

In many ways, the second coming of bingo is down to a rise of modern social media marketing, which has allowed companies to market 90-Ball Bingo online to the exact people they want to attract, subsequently changing the intended demographic of bingo itself.

This has then allowed several companies to notice and riff off this change, creating a physical bingo experience which is unlike any other. One of the most successful of these companies can be found in Manchester.

The Bingo Scene In Manchester

One of the biggest revelations in the Manchester nightlife scene has been the rise of Bongo’s Bingo, which was launched back in 2015. This is a company that has reignited the nation’s love of bingo, turning it into a fresh game with a new kind of experience for players. In short, it turns bingo into the biggest party in town!

To do this, Bongo’s Bingo ensures that players are not only treated to a fast-flowing game of bingo, they’re also treated to multiple dance offs, insane prizes – some of the most interesting include a pool inflatable, bouncy hopper, and even a Henry Hoover – and a load of cheesy tunes that get the venue pumping.

The Social Aspect Of Bingo

In Manchester alone, there are dozens of bingo venue halls, but ones like Bongo’s Bingo offer something a little extra. The social aspect. In the past, players who turned up at a bingo venue would be treated to a game of bingo without a significant emphasis on social interaction.

In Manchester, however, there are multiple venue halls which offer a way for players to get to know each other, have fun, and, in a way, play the game of bingo in between all of this!

Once again, this may be down to the way online casinos are now promoting the game of bingo, with an emphasis on connecting different players through chat rooms that are integrated into the sites themselves, designed to create a more engaging experience.

For people in Manchester, bingo has become the hub of many local communities, allowing residents to meet, have fun, play the game, and win some special prizes.

How Far Could It Go?

Manchester has long been a hub for business and innovation, and at the moment, it is contributing to a UK bingo market that is worth more than £1 billion a year. To put that in perspective, this makes Britain’s bingo scene even more lucrative than Netflix and Spotify combined!

According to a recent study, as many as 5.6 million Brits play bingo in traditional bingo halls and online platforms every year, and as companies like Bongo’s Bingo continue to find and nail down their niche, this is only set to grow.

In Manchester, the last few years speak for themselves. People are looking for a different kind of experience, both when it comes to bingo and finding new ways to socialise, in venues that are offering something other than the traditional “night-out” experience.

There is no telling how far the market could really go, however, especially when it comes to the rise of online gaming. As already mentioned, Manchester is one of the top cities for the 2023 bingo experience, but as the mobile gaming industry grows – while also offering that social aspect – more and more players are having fun online. That being said, it feels like Manchester will continue to thrive as a bingo-loving city for a while longer!

PaperCut Secures Top Position for Third Consecutive Year in Global and U.S. Device and Print Management Market Shares for 2022

For the third successive year, PaperCut Software has earned the esteemed number 1 rank in both Worldwide and U.S. Device and Print Management market shares, as indicated by the recent publication of the IDC Worldwide and U.S. Device and Print Management Market Shares, 2022 (doc #US49326323, June 2023) report.

Amidst the evolving landscape of hybrid work environments and the growing acceptance of cloud-based solutions, PaperCut asserted its dominance in the device and print management software arena during 2022. It proudly retained its position as the leading vendor in the market for the third consecutive year.

While 2021 witnessed a decline in industry revenues, 2022 witnessed a modest recovery. As the global impact of the COVID-19 pandemic waned and businesses gradually returned to their offices, most vendors experienced growth throughout the year. This collective progress led to a 3.1% upswing in worldwide device and print management document solution software sales compared to 2021. In this dynamic environment, PaperCut stood strong, maintaining its premier status with a market share of 12.9% and total sales of $83.9 million.

According to the findings of the IDC report, PaperCut is leading the charge towards cloud adoption by offering suitable solutions for both public and private cloud environments. Their cloud-focused offerings, PaperCut Hive and PaperCut Pocket, which were introduced in 2021, continue to resonate with customers by addressing the imperative to reduce costs, simplify print management, and curtail waste.

Steve Holmes, Head of Global Sales & Channels at PaperCut, shared his thoughts on the report, stating: “In the midst of navigating the ever-evolving concept of the ‘new normal,’ PaperCut takes great pride in maintaining its position as the foremost print management solution by market share for the third consecutive year. This consistency underscores the shared commitment between our customers and our channel partners towards sustainability. It also underscores the resilience of our product portfolio in the face of strong demand for mobile, secure, and cloud-ready print management solutions.”

Holmes added, “The success of PaperCut is intrinsically tied to the success of our channel partners. Our Authorised Solution Centers, OEM partnerships, and Reseller network have their fingers on the pulse of customer demands and the evolving state of the printing industry. Their dedication, discipline, and expertise play a pivotal role in securing PaperCut’s market leadership status as recognised by IDC for three successive years. As we look ahead, we remain confident that PaperCut and our channel partners will continue to thrive by keeping customer needs at the forefront.”

Historic Property Resembling a Grade II-Listed Prison Emerges for Auction, Linked to Wartime Role

0

A property reminiscent of a Grade II-listed prison, complete with an unsettling sign, has been introduced to the auction market with a starting price of £160,000.

What catches the eye is the presence of an eerie sign reading “prisoner of war,” crafted from what appears to be aged metal bars, evoking the aura of a bygone jail cell window.

Located in Bawdsey, Suffolk, this somber abode stands as a bare concrete structure, devoid of any flooring, wallpaper, or paint, and crowned by a roof of weathered tin.

Its historical roots trace back to the 1940s when the property is believed to have been employed to house high-precision range finders.

Moreover, this structure is thought to have served as a communication hub for searchlight positions and artillery during the wartime era.

While traditional windows are conspicuously absent, small apertures punctuate the concrete walls, and an opportunity to insert a door on the side of the property remains.

Unfortunately, the interior has been marred by graffiti scrawled across its walls.

Despite its decrepit state, the property is slated for auction on July 26th, with an estimated value of £160,000. Remarkably, the property listing hardly alludes to its peculiar interior.

Instead, it emphasizes the picturesque sea view and the presence of 0.2 acres of land.

Spanning a generous area of 7.15 square feet, the property extends over three levels, although regrettably, there exists no staircase connecting these floors.

The property’s description reads: “The Battery Observation Post holds the distinction of being Grade II Listed.

“Its origins are believed to stem from the 1940s, characterized by reinforced concrete construction and a cantilever roof gracing the balcony that offers scenic vistas of the sea.

“It has been recognized that the upper story once sheltered high-precision range finders, operating as a pivotal communication centre connecting the searchlight placements and artillery positions.

“This structure is said to have functioned as the strategic hub for the emergency coastal defense battery.

“It is envisaged that those interested could explore diverse potential applications.

“Although the prospect of a residential dwelling was denied in the late 1980s, there’s evidence that in September 2002, Planning Permission and Listed Building Consent were granted for repurposing it as a holiday unit.

“Regrettably, this transformation did not come to fruition at that time.”

0
  • The very best of British innovation, design, technology and science to be showcased in the heart of Whitehall
  • DSIT marks six-month anniversary with an open invite to businesses and organisations across the UK to exhibit at the Department’s new HQ from early 2024
  • Showcase forms part of DSIT’s mission to build a pro-innovation culture across Government as key to delivering on priority to grow the economy

Leading innovation firms, technology businesses and research organisations have today (9 August) been invited to showcase their innovations at the entrance to the new Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) HQ, as part of the Department’s plans to champion innovation and the pioneering work of UK industry and academia.

The Department is marking its six-month anniversary with an invite to businesses and organisations from across the country to exhibit within its new headquarters, giving their work prominence and visibility to Ministers, businesses, Government officials, and influential individuals who will visit the area.

It gives the Department another opportunity to showcase the very best of British innovation, design, technology and science. Those selected to exhibit will be promoted across the Department’s social media channels as well as at internal events, highlighting their work to the innovators and decision makers who are leading the push to cement the UK’s status as a science superpower.

Science and Technology Secretary Michelle Donelan said:

“UK businesses, universities and research organisations are already world leaders in their fields, from life sciences and engineering biology to quantum computing and AI. To seize on the potential for science and technology to keep our nation secure, our people prosperous, and our planet healthy, it is essential we place this work at the very centre of what we do in Government – and hosting them in our new HQ demonstrates our commitment to working hand-in-hand with the sector while opening up one more avenue for collaboration.

“These exhibitions will give us another opportunity to see first-hand how these technologies are improving the lives of everyone in the UK, and it will give those exhibiting a new platform to showcase their work, right in the heart of Government.”

The dedicated Department for Science, Innovation and Technology is the force behind the Prime Minister’s commitment to growing the economy, and to improving the lives of everyone in the UK through new discoveries that advance the health and prosperity of society whilst protecting our values both at home and abroad.

The Government has set out its aim to be a science and technology superpower by 2030, to meet this ambition it has identified five technologies of tomorrow – Quantum, AI, Engineering Biology, Semiconductors and Future Telecoms. Together with life sciences, space, and green technologies, these technologies have been identified as most critical to the UK in the coming decades.

DSIT is celebrating its six-month anniversary since it was formed to deliver on the clear mission set by the Prime Minister, to ensure the UK is the most innovative economy in the world. During those six months, the Department has launched the Science and Technology Framework, backed by over £370 million to boost investment in innovation, to bring the world’s best talent to the UK, and seize the potential of ground-breaking new technologies like AI. The AI Taskforce, backed by £100 million in government funding, was also launched to accelerate the UK’s generative AI sector and keep pace with rapid advances in these technologies.

Other highlights from the last six months include the 10-year National Quantum Strategy backed by £2.5 billion of public funding, and the International Technology Strategy which lays out our plan to support tech investment, encourage international collaboration, and strengthen the UK’s cyber security defences. More recently we announced up to £50 million of government investment in new UK Research Ventures Catalyst to encourage greater private and philanthropic backing for UK science, research and innovation.

The Department is due to move into its new HQ in the estate known as the ‘Admiralty Buildings’ later this year, physically positioning science and technology at the core of Whitehall. The new offices will see all London-based DSIT officials located in the same building, as the beating heart of science and technology in Westminster.

The first exhibitions are expected to begin early in 2024 and interested participants will be asked to outline how they are helping the UK to cement its position as a science and technology superpower. They will also be asked to show how their organisation will deliver improved public services, create new better-paid jobs, and grow the economy. Each exhibit will be in place for around one month.

Businesses and organisations who are interested in exhibiting at our London HQ, can contact exhibit@dsit.gov.uk for more information.

How to Cultivate Leadership as a Student

0

Have you ever heard of a newborn running a marathon? Or a baby doing a corporate job? Humans, when they are born, are blank canvases. They acquire abilities and talents as they go through different phases of life. The same goes for leadership qualities. Leaders aren’t born – they are created.

So if you lack leadership qualities, know you could continually cultivate them. Whether you want to become the class president, lead a club, or be the best version of yourself, this guide contains the best strategies to develop leadership skills.

What Is Leadership as a Student?

At its core, leadership is the quality of leading, inspiring, and influencing others. It’s the ability to envision a better future, plot a path, and motivate others to join the journey. Nonetheless, it isn’t the same for everyone. It is a multifaceted concept that goes beyond holding a position of authority. For instance, iconic figures like Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. were great leaders. Healthcare professionals who work to care for the sick are also great leaders. Communities protesting for social change also exhibit brilliant skills.

So, the truth is leadership isn’t restricted to a selected few. Instead, there is a leader in every human. Sometimes, it takes extra effort to nurture student leadership.

How to Improve Leadership Skills as a Student?

Your journey to leadership as a student is going to be an enriching and empowering process. Remembering that abilities can’t be developed over time is crucial. It takes time. You have to be consistent with your efforts. And you shall soon start seeing positive results.

#1 – Find Activities That Don’t Impact Your Education

Engaging in activities you care about is a great way to build skills. It helps you gain hands-on experience and build confidence. Consider joining scholar clubs or organizations. Also, give community service projects a try. To take things to the next level, take on roles within the college. In addition, internships, volunteering, or part-time jobs allow you to work with others, collaborate on projects, and take on responsibilities. These experiences nurture qualities like teamwork, communication, and problem-solving.

A potential challenge to this is managing the schedule. As a college student, you might have several essays and assignments to submit every week. One solution is to outsource writing tasks to a custom essay company with professional writers who could compose excellent papers on your behalf. It helps free up valuable time. So, you get to focus on developing leading abilities while maintaining academic excellence.

#2 – Seek Mentorship and Feedback

You should be open to developing strong leadership as a college student. It involves seeking guidance from experienced individuals. These might be your teachers, relatives, seniors, or even friends. It could offer valuable insights and share wisdom to support growth.

You also learn about different viewpoints and fresh perspectives on the same topic. Moreover, regularly seeking feedback helps you self-reflect. You become more aware of style, strengths, and areas for improvement. Self-awareness is vital for continuous growth as a leader.

Remember to be open-minded when seeking mentorship and feedback. Approach potential mentors respectfully. Then, express a genuine interest in learning. Be prepared to listen and implement their guidance efficiently.

#3 – Collaborate and Delegate Tasks

Collaboration and delegation are two essential pillars of effective leadership. Learners’ diverse abilities and perspectives work collectively to achieve common goals. It promotes open communication and a supportive atmosphere. Pupils feel valued for their contributions. It enhances their commitment to the group’s objectives.

As a leader, keep in mind that you can’t do everything yourself. Delegating tasks and responsibilities is important. But for this, you should understand each member’s strengths, talents, passions, and weaknesses. It will allow you to assign tasks that align with each student’s strengths. For example, if a member is passionate about writing, give them tasks like essays or email writing.

To delegate effectively, communicate clear expectations, and provide necessary resources and support. Nevertheless, don’t get too involved. Allow members the freedom to approach tasks in their way. Offer constructive feedback when necessary, and be available for guidance always.

Why Should You, as a Student, Work on Your Leadership Competencies?

Building leadership qualities as a student is critical in today’s dynamic world. Beyond academic excellence, it allows students to become influential agents of change. You get to inspire others and leave a lasting impact on communities. Here are additional benefits leadership experience as a student offers.

  • Enhanced communication skills
  • Ability to influence and motivate others
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Capability to collaborate and work harmoniously
  • Emotional intelligence
  • Adaptability and flexibility in new circumstances
  • Innovative thinking and entrepreneurial spirit

The Positive Role of Leadership in Education

The positive role of leadership in education can’t be overstated. Effective leading shapes the educational experience and outcome. School principals, teachers, or administrators hold the power to set the tone for a conducive learning environment. This contributes to feeling motivated, engaged, and supported on campus.

Furthermore, educational leaders serve as advocates for success. It also drives innovation and improvement. These activities ensure equal access to quality education and a safe, inclusive space where young people thrive.

Final Thoughts

Developing leadership skills as a student is a transformative journey. Not only does it fuel personal growth, but it also paves the way for future success. Embrace opportunities, take the initiative, collaborate, and delegate. Remember, leading isn’t limited to a select few. Everyone has access to it, given they put in continuous effort.

In this guide, we have explored several strategies to nurture leads. Start by putting some of those into practice. Be consistent, and you will be a great leader in no time
