Horwich Farrelly raises £27,000 for Shelter

0

Manchester-based law firm, Horwich Farrelly, has smashed its initial £15,000 fundraising target and raised a staggering £27,000 for Shelter in 2018. The figure is the largest amount raised for a single charity in the firm’s fifty-year history, and takes the total amount given to good causes by Horwich Farrelly since 2015 to £100,000.

Shelter was announced as the firm’s nominated charity last year after being selected by employees. Throughout 2018 colleagues from across the UK came together to take part in a range of initiatives to raise vital funds for Shelter and to improve awareness of the issues surrounding homelessness and housing.

Jumping into the saddle, Legal Cashier, Zane Brown singlehandedly raised £1,750 for Shelter, when he took part in a 300 mile bike ride from London to Paris. Demonstrating the level of commitment from colleagues across the firm, a group in London headed by Counter Fraud Partner, Karen Mann, took on a Mission Impossible style race against time in the Vertical Rush challenge. The feat saw them run to the top of London’s Tower 42, the seventh tallest skyscraper in the UK, raising £1,440 in the process.

Other initiatives included the Great Manchester Run, the Worksop and Manchester half marathons, the Cardiff 10k, the firm’s Recoveries department ascending to the top of Snowdon, a charity golf tournament, the Liverpool Santa Dash and a number of bake sales and coffee mornings. In addition, donations of children’s toys, toiletries and clothing were also made into Christmas hampers and given to 25 families living in emergency or temporary accommodation across Yorkshire.

One of the biggest fundraising challenges involved ten members of Horwich Farrelly’s leadership team, including seven partners, who raised a fantastic £5,150 for the charity by taking part in a sponsored sleepout. The group swapped their home comforts for a night sleeping outdoors to help them gain a better understanding of the challenges faced by people rough sleeping.

Raising further awareness of the issues surrounding homelessness, four partners and the COO of Horwich Farrelly volunteered for a day at a drop in centre for homeless people in Manchester. The team spent the day serving drinks and food, as well as listening to stories from the homeless and gaining more of an understanding about homelessness in the city.

Thomas Reynard, Chief Operating Officer at Horwich Farrelly, commented: “We have a proud track record of supporting good causes in our fifty year history, however, our partnership with Shelter has truly inspired our 750 colleagues as demonstrated by the incredible amount raised, almost double our original target. The £27,000 raised by employees in Belfast, Cardiff, Liverpool, London, Manchester, Sheffield and Southampton is testament to the enthusiasm and commitment of all our people.

“As well as raising funds to allow Shelter to continue their vital work, we have also sought to inform our workforce, which is largely made up of millennials, of the issues facing a generation that has seen a huge drop in home ownership. This has included looking at renters’ rights and dealing with rogue landlords, the discrimination faced by the LGBT community in housing allocation and building regulations in the wake of the Grenfell Tower tragedy.”

Liz Norris, Service Manager at Shelter, said: “We are overwhelmed and humbled by the kind and sincere acts from the employees at Horwich Farrelly. The generosity of individuals and commitment from the company, means that our teams at Shelter can help more people find and keep a home and continue to support people to live healthier happier lives.”

Old football kits get new lease of life in africa

0

A former international soccer player is making sure unwanted football kits and equipment from junior clubs across Greater Manchester are being put to good use, thousands of miles away in Africa.

For several years, former Nigerian international Chuks Akuneto has been collecting redundant strips, boots, shin pads and goalkeeping gloves and sending them to his native country and Kenya for less fortunate youngsters to wear.

So far, over 200 young footballers have benefited from his initiative and the latest to receive a kit is the Success Youth Club’s under-11s squad, based in a suburb of the capital, Lagos.

Their green and white hooped kit was previously worn by a team at St John’s Junior Football Club in Chorlton, sponsored by Salford-based company MC Construction.

Chuks, who manages the St John’s under-7s squad, is a Manchester Football Association tutor and coach mentor who in his playing career represented his country four times. He played professionally for clubs in Cameroon, India, Malaysia, Russia and Vietnam as well as in Nigeria.

He came to England after he retired and held a variety of coaching and management roles at FC United from 2008 to 2014.

In addition to St John’s, Chuks has collected unwanted items from clubs including Curzon Ashton and Droylsden FC, and has shipped them to Africa.

Chuks said: “I grew up in Lagos and benefited from people who handed down their kits to me and enabled me to have a career in football.

“I found that in England many old kits were thrown out or left to gather dust in a cupboard, so I thought it would be a good idea to collect them and send them to my contacts who distribute them to less fortunate children, whose parents cannot afford to buy boots, a strip or other equipment.

“We’ve had lots of messages of appreciation from clubs and families in Nigeria and Kenya.

“It’s my way of giving back as a way of saying thank you for what I’ve gained from football, as it gives kids in Africa the opportunity to go and enjoy playing the sport.”

The MC Construction-sponsored kit was worn by the current under-11s at St John’s from under-7s to under-9s level.

Among the boys in the St John’s team is the son of company director Chris Purcell.

Kevin Garvey, treasurer of St John’s, said: “Every few years, teams get a new sponsor and we collect the old kits once they are outgrown. They are usually still in good condition and we don’t want them to go to waste, so it’s great to be able to pass them on to children who would otherwise go without.

“In turn our boys can understand that others are less fortunate and that they can help children in another part of the world.”

Chris Purcell said: “We are proud that our sponsored shirts have contributed to Chuks’ fantastic and worthwhile initiative.

“Both of my children currently play for St John’s and it’s a great way for the club to help other youngsters who are less fortunate.”

Accelerate Places celebrates New Year hat-trick for members

0

Accelerate Places Manchester has enjoyed a spectacular start to 2019. The dynamic office and co-working space, has seen the arrival of the NHS, its newest and largest member, and two of its entrepreneurs have achieved outstanding success with one member being mentored by Dragon’s Den star, Theo Paphitis, and the other the face of a global advertising campaign.

A newly formed digital innovation team, from Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust, has become the newest and largest member at the shared office space on Princess Street, taking a mix of co-working desks and private office space.

The team of 18, which works across Greater Manchester to optimise the sharing of information between organisations to support patient care, was successful in securing national funding to be one of the first NHS trusts to roll out the new programme.

Paul Moore, Acting Head of Interoperability for Salford Royal NHS Delivery Team, said: “We have come together with a wealth of experience, and from a range of NHS and non-NHS organisations, to deliver this programme and we are excited by the opportunity this gives us to make a contribution to the 2.8m people living in Greater Manchester.

“We selected Accelerate Places as it was an ideal location for us as we have partner organisations based at offices right next to the two train stations, Piccadilly and Oxford Road. The move into the new premises has been seamless and the team love the modern feel of the dedicated space and positive vibes. We are already seeing the benefits of having a shared, dynamic office space and are looking forward to an exciting future.”

Matt Bird, founder of clothing brand, We Are Gntlmen, received a visit from former Dragon’s Den star, Theo Paphitis, earlier this month after winning the 2018 Many Hands Campaign.

Matt, who has been a member of Accelerate Places for just over a year, won the campaign following his launch of the ‘Humphrey’ shirt where 100% of the proceeds were donated to the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital.

Matt said: “I started my business in 2013 in my spare bedroom, so having the opportunity to meet with one of the UK’s highest profile entrepreneurs felt incredible. By winning the campaign, we had the opportunity to meet with Theo in our offices to talk about our business, our plans and the future for our brand. Theo offered some in-depth retail knowledge and advice and also showed interest in the steps we’re taking and we’re already planning our next meetings with him.

“I’ve been at Accelerate Places since 2017 and have found it a great place to grow a business. Being surrounded by great entrepreneurs who are on the same journey really helps and they make a real effort to bring everyone together and make the working space a nice place to be.”

Entrepreneur, Josh Turner, has been based at Accelerate Places in Manchester since November 2017 after launching his business, Stand4Socks. Josh reverse engineered the most comfortable socks, which are ethically made, and has grown the business by over 600% in the last year. Thanks to his incredible achievement, Josh was recently selected to be the face of a Vodafone advertising campaign featuring successful entrepreneurs.

He said: “It was great to be selected by Vodafone for the advert and the profile it has brought to the business has been fantastic, something I wouldn’t have ever expected when I came up with the idea of changing the world with socks.

“We moved to Accelerate Place to be around a number of like-minded people. The space is extremely professional and productive but also relaxing – which is important for a digital creative business like ours. A number of my close friends are running business from the space, some of our suppliers and partners are only a few desks away. It doesn’t feel like an office in the traditional sense. We also love the flexibility to grow provided by Accelerate Places. Although we are currently a very small team, we can double in size overnight if we needed to and this is very important to us.”

“The laid-back feel of the office means quite of few of us barely leave, working late and over weekends which I feel is because of the culture and environment here. It really is a second home for ambitious entrepreneurs!”

Georgia-Kaye Berry, Community Manager at Accelerate Places Manchester, said: “We have had a fantastic start to the year and are really excited that the new digital innovation team from Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust has now joined us. We have a variety of spaces available here for businesses of varying sizes and with different requirements so we can always find a space to suit.

“Our membership is a community of entrepreneurs so it’s a very vibrant place with lots of ambitious businesses looking to innovate and disrupt, so it’s no wonder they are all doing incredibly well. However, Matt and Josh have really stood out this month for their incredible achievements and we are so privileged to be a part of their journey, to watch them grow and to celebrate with them along the way.

“The phenomenal success of our members is really putting Accelerate Places on the radar of a growing number of businesses looking for bespoke and flexible office space in which to start-up, grow or even house brand new teams, all at the heart of our beautiful and very special city.”
