Tech firm reaffirms environmental commitment

0

British cloud firm UKFast has annouced its commitment to meeting stringent emissions targets under the government’s Climate Change Agreement (CCA) for data centres, administered by techUK.

The move reflects the energy efficiency of the firm’s data centres and the business’ decade-long commitment to reducing emissions.

The firm was the first carbon neutral hosting company in the UK, having achieved the PAS 2060 carbon neutrality specification in 2010, contributing to a number of hydropower renewable energy schemes, which reduce greenhouse gas emissions by displacing power from higher-emission fossil fuel sources on the regional electric grid.

While web hosting is an energy-intensive industry, well-planned layouts and engineering in data centres ensures minimal wastage; using the right ratio of cooling to levels of heat output keeps temperature levels constant rather than allowing wasteful peaks and troughs.

UKFast CEO Lawrence Jones, said: “We’re incredibly proud to commit to this agreement to show our ongoing dedication to carbon reduction. There’s no denying how power-hungry the hosting industry is, which is why it is our responsibility to ensure that it has the lowest possible impact on the environment. As a tech community it’s incredibly important that we take a responsible and pro-active approach to energy usage.

“We are committed to reducing our emissions and buying all of our energy from renewable sources. We are also investing in new technologies and efficient systems across UKFast and delivering greater energy efficiency is a key part of our roadmap for the coming years.

“Our data centres are designed to be as efficient as possible, and we continue to embrace emerging technology to increase that efficiency year on year. Our newest data centre, MaNOC 8, is our greenest data centre yet, with super-efficient UPS, AC power supply and generators. All of the lighting in the facility is LED, which uses significantly less energy.”

Manchester law firm announces Northern Powerhouse partnership

11Altrincham-based litigation specialist, FS Legal, has become a member of the Government’s Northern Powerhouse Partnership Programme.

The law firm is one of a growing number of businesses from across the North that is part of the network. Through the scheme, partners work towards building a Northern Powerhouse in four main areas; connectivity and transport, skills, science and innovation, quality of life and culture, and devolution.

Julia Norris, Partner at FS Legal’s Manchester office, said: “We are committed to supporting the development and economic growth of the North and proud to announce our partnership with the Northern Powerhouse Programme.

“We will be championing the initiative throughout 2019 and are focused on forming meaningful collaborations and alliances with organisations and businesses across the region.

“A big priority for us is to grow by attracting and recruiting the best legal talent from across the UK to encourage the growing devolution to the region.”

The law firm recently launched the FS Legal Mentoring Scheme, which allows newly qualified lawyers to shadow senior members through case work and client relations. It is designed to support individual staff development and encourage career progression.

This year, the scheme will be launched to disadvantaged and minority school and college students across the North West, who might otherwise struggle to get a foothold in the legal profession. Students will be offered work placements at the firm and can access an ongoing mentor programme to enhance their professional development and future career prospects.

FS Legal is already flying the flag for the region, with Partner Kit Sorrell becoming the first and only lawyer in the North West to be inducted into the Legal 500 Hall of Fame for professional negligence work. He was also one of only seven lawyers in the North West awarded Hall of Fame status for commercial litigation at the end of 2018.

The awards are the Legal 500’s highest accolades and credited FS Legal as, “The only pure financial services litigation firm outside London.”

Minister for the Northern Powerhouse, Jake Berry, MP said: “I’m delighted to welcome FS Legal to the Northern Powerhouse Partners Programme. With their commitment to attracting young talent through their mentoring scheme, they’re well placed to develop the next generation of legal professionals across the Northern Powerhouse, and contribute to our shared ambition to boost jobs and economic growth across the North to rebalance the economy and build a Britain fit for the future.”

The Quays business community gets quacking for charity

0

Children’s health charity MedEquip4Kids are back again this Easter with the annual Quays Duck Race which welcomes hundreds to Salford Quays for an afternoon of family fun while raising thousands for the charity’s projects.

Lowry Outlet has come on board as the event’s main sponsor.  Kelly Hurst, Centre Manager said: “We are so pleased to be able to sponsor the Quays Duck Race, which is for a brilliant cause, that raises much needed funds for children in Salford and the surrounding areas. The event has a fantastic community spirit to it, which see families enjoying a great day out and raising money for charity.”

The business community is following Lowry Outlet’s lead and getting involved by sponsoring a Mega Duck. Companies including Fuzzy Duck, Kids Planet, Orega, Vinci Construction, Lime Bar and The Lowry Theatre will be decorating large ducks for the Mega Duck Race which will kick off the racing.

Ghazala Baig, Chief Executive at MedEquip4Kids said: “We are so thankful for the fantastic support received from Lowry Outlet and our Mega Duck sponsors.  We know that this is going to be the best year yet for the Quays Duck Race which will enable us to support even more children.”

The sponsorship from Lowry Outlet means all funds raised at the event will support the work of MedEquip4Kids who believe every child should have access to the best medical care when they need it most.

The charity is currently fundraising for a number of projects including essential equipment for Salford Royal Hospital’s Paediatric Accident and Emergency Unit including a hand-held blood analyser.  At present the staff process blood samples in other departments in the hospital, requiring a member of staff to leave the Unit during critical times.  The hand held device could be taken to a patient’s bedside and requires a much smaller amount of blood meaning a far more comfortable process for the patient.

Rachael Baird, the Unit Manager said: “Having this device would quicken time critical decisions and improve emergency care, by enabling staff to stay by the patient’s side where they are needed the most.”

Ciceley Commercials steals the show as Mercedes-Benz Vans honours ‘the best of the best’

0

Ciceley Commercials enjoyed a sensational night at Mercedes-Benz Vans’ latest celebration of franchisee excellence, winning no fewer than three of the six prizes that were up for grabs, including the most coveted of all, for Retailer of the Year.

A founding member of the Mercedes-Benz Dealer Network, the family-owned company represents the three-pointed star in Lancashire and Cumbria, as well as parts of Greater Manchester and south-west Scotland.

Ciceley’s success in winning the Retailer of the Year crown reflects a magnificent performance throughout 2018 by the 200-plus colleagues who work at its headquarters and dealership in Blackburn, and other sales and service facilities in Bolton, Carlisle and Dumfries.

Staged at the Celtic Manor Resort, in Newport, South Wales, the Mercedes-Benz Van Stars event was hosted by sports and music radio and television presenter Colin Murray.

Ciceley Commercials also claimed Mercedes-Benz Vans’ top accolade in 2015, the first year in which it was presented. And just as he did four years ago, a delighted Dealer Principal Mike Lewis again stepped up to receive the prestigious trophy.

“Given the tough competition from other members of this network, to be recognised for any award is special – but to win three is utterly amazing,” said Mike. “Every member of the company team has played a part in our success, and I’m extremely proud that we’ve been recognised by Mercedes-Benz Vans as the best in the business.”

Ciceley Commercials sells and supports Sprinter, Vito and Citan van models, as well as X-Class pickups. Mike pointed out that “not only do we sell to many ‘blue chip’ national companies, but we also do a fabulous job for retail customers who want just one vehicle”.

He continued: “There were challenges during 2018, of course, but we came through them with flying colours. It was a year in which we over-achieved on sales of both new and used vans, and activated more connected vehicles than any other Mercedes-Benz Vans Retailer. On aftersales, meanwhile, we posted record workshop labour and parts sales, and exceeded all our service contract targets.”

Mercedes-Benz Vans Managing Director Steve Bridge, added: “In this evolving world it is important that our Retailers not only sell and mend well, but also that we react quickly to customer requests, and embrace all available technology to enable them to be more efficient and to beat their competition.

“Our Retailer of the Year award has traditionally focused on just two areas of our businesses, Sales and Customer Services. Now, though, we include other factors such as the management of customer relationships and enquiry response times, together with activations of our Mercedes PRO connect vehicle management technology, and the way it is being applied for the benefit of customers.

“Ciceley Commercials has excelled in all of these areas and is a worthy winner of the Mercedes-Benz Vans Retailer of the Year award.”
