University of Manchester Innovation Company holds Innovation Showcase

Over 100 people have come together to learn more about developments at the University in Vision Sciences, Bioelectronics and MedTech. There were demonstrations of new technologies, tours of MedTech laboratories, presentations by researchers and budding entrepreneurs as well as roundtable discussions and networking with the University’s technology transfer company, UMI3.

Curtis Dobson, Professor of Translational Biology at the University, commented: “The University of Manchester carries out an astonishingly broad programme of research, with numerous world renowned teams eager to help companies pursue their R&D goals.

“Events like the Innovation Showcase offer a fantastic opportunity for the University to engage with industry and further its mission to make a positive impact in the world.”

Mary Canning, Associate at Epidarex, a specialist life science venture capital group, who attended the Innovation Showcase commented: “We like to work closely with top universities and the Innovation Showcase was very helpful in pointing out where The University of Manchester’s strengths lie. We’ve had a good relationship with UMI3 for the last couple of years. “They’ve pitched a number of projects to us and there’s a very exciting pipeline.”

She added: “I’d also say that academics shouldn’t feel that they have to have a perfect business plan before they talk to industry or talk to investors, because if the technology is exciting enough, people will want to help and give advice.

“We like to engage directly with academics, even long before they need funding so we can give them some input and then talk again later on.”

Mark Dearden took part in the Plenary Panel. Mark is VP of Strategy & Marketing at LG, a global leader in the life sciences sector, serving customers in healthcare, applied markets (including food, agbio and the environment), research and government.

Mark commented: “Innovation is critical to our agenda as a company. We track the vitality of our portfolio, which is a measure of revenue generated from new technology.

“The diversity of perspectives from such a broad range of attendees in the Innovation Showcase was really engaging.”

Paul said: “For me, when looking for new opportunities it’s all about finding the right challenge. Verastar is the biggest business I’ve worked with directly, turning over £148m last year, and there was a lot of cross-over with the senior team’s values and mine.

Double celebration for Morris & Spottiswood after second gold health & safety award win

0

Warrington based construction sector firm Morris & Spottiswood has been commended for its commitment to health and safety after winning its second Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) gold award in the space of 12 months.

Morris & Spottiswood England, which also has an office in Leeds, was recognised for its health and safety practices as part of the 2019 RoSPA Health & Safety Awards, the longest-running industry awards scheme in the UK.

The company’s Scottish operation secured a RoSPA Gold award in 2018, with staff at its Glasgow, Edinburgh and Perth offices praised for their efforts in maintaining workplace safety.

Morris & Spottiswood Group CEO Jon Dunwell said the two gold awards were a testament to the focus and hard work of individuals, at all levels and within every sector of the business, who ensure staff and contractors return home safely each day.

“We’re delighted to have been recognised yet again by RoSPA,” he said. “It represents a double-win, cross borders having now achieved the gold standard in England and Scotland. Health and safety is of paramount importance within the construction industry for obvious reasons and we strive to ingrain best practice into every area of the business. It’s incredibly rewarding to have that effort recognised in this way.

“Health and safety is our number one concern and we work tirelessly to achieve safe working conditions for staff, supply chain partners and clients, as well as members of the public who may come into contact with our activities. There are always improvements that can be made and we’re committed to a process of continual improvement to ensure our work environments are as safe as possible.”

Alphabiolabs blazes a trail with prenatal paternity tests in the UK

0

AlphaBiolabs, which performs the DNA tests for ITV’s The Jeremy Kyle Show, has achieved a UK first by introducing non-invasive prenatal paternity testing at its laboratory in Warrington.

Previously, samples had to be sent to the United States for analysis, leading to a wait of at least two weeks before the results were known.

The company has invested in advanced technology at its lab to test samples from the mother and the alleged father entirely in-house, from as little as six weeks after conception.

Managing director David Thomas said there has been a 72 per cent increase in the number of tests that have been ordered since the venture was launched last month.

The test can safely identify whether a man is a baby’s biological father before the child is born. A blood sample is taken from the mother and a mouth swab sample from the man.

The DNA of the adults and the unborn baby is extracted at the lab and AlphaBiolabs’ team of geneticists then examine up to 35 markers in these profiles.

The testing process works on the same principle as standard DNA paternity tests. By examining the baby’s DNA together with that of the mother and alleged father, it is possible to determine whether the baby shares the man’s DNA. When the tested man is not the biological father, there will be differences.

AlphaBiolabs’ test gives at least 99.9 per cent probability of paternity where the father is confirmed as the biological father.

Previously, procedures such as amniocentesis and chorionic villus sampling would have been relied upon to gain a sample of an unborn baby’s DNA. Both of these invasive methods incur a slight risk of miscarriage.

Under the new method, there is no risk to the unborn child, as a blood sample is only needed from the mother.

AlphaBiolabs is offering results within a week as standard, with an express service providing the outcomes in four days.

Samples can be collected by the company’s staff at a convenient address or customers can use one of AlphaBiolabs’ 10 walk-in centres across the UK.

Managing director David Thomas said: “Bringing the paternity testing service in-house is a significant move for AlphaBiolabs.

“Not only are we speeding up this process, we can also now offer the test as early as six weeks after conception. This is a first for the UK and for Europe.

“This investment further demonstrates our position as the industry leader for ground-breaking services. We have been extremely pleased with the take-up in the first few weeks of the roll-out and are excited about future offerings in the pipeline.”

The company has also recently been appointed to transform the former Royal Mail building on Copperas Hill into a teaching hub and sports centre for Liverpool John Moores University. The site will provide high quality new buildings and open spaces, as well as regenerating a key gateway site in the heart of Liverpool city centre.

In Greater Manchester, work began in October 2018 at the third build-to-rent block at English Cities Fund’s Slate Yard residential project in Salford. When complete, the £34 million, 21 storey tower, located within the New Bailey development, will comprise 199 one, two and three bedroom homes.
