Business Manchester to be media partner for the Festival of Manufacturing Excellence

The virtual Festival, on 7/8 October, has been organised by The Manufacturing Institute and offers an outstanding experience to help manufacturing business leaders redefine their roles and enable organisations to build their future around their people.

Commented Andrew Mann, Group Editor, Business Manchester: “As one of 2020’s leading manufacturing events, Business Manchester is delighted to work in partnership with The Manufacturing Institute, as a media partner.

“Over two live festival days, the event includes five keynote speakers, eight masterclasses for world class manufacturing companies, associated workshops and virtual networking opportunities, as well as 30 days of on demand content. Registered attendees can either participate live or take their time to watch and absorb the content. It is certainly an event not to missed, if you are involved with the manufacturing sector.“

Added Mark Leeson, event organiser: “Our ambition for this first ever Festival of Manufacturing Excellence is to create an incredible learning platform like no other, bringing participants closer to industry leaders, global manufacturers and peers across the sector.

“Moving from complexity to simplicity is at the heart of our 2020 Festival: how to achieve it and the benefits it brings. We will look at how eliminating complexity can improve performance and outline how a streamlined approach reduces waste, avoids errors, and makes life simpler for employees – and their business.

“It will certainly be a Festival to be proud of and hopefully one we will repeat next year.”

Keenan investment drives growth in Manchester

The UK’s largest food waste recycling business, Keenan Recycling has invested almost £4.5 million into its English vehicle fleet to further grow market share, including key collections in Manchester.

The Aberdeen headquartered company, which reduces the amount of waste going into landfill by collecting and recycling organic material, has added 6 new vehicles, worth around £115,000 each to its operations in Manchester. This is as part of a large investment for almost 40 new vehicles to be rolled out across regions in England.

Initially set up as a garden composting business, Keenan Recycling launched its commercial food waste collection services in Scotland in 2009 before moving south of the border and expanding across England since 2018. Focused on reducing the amount of waste going to landfill, Keenan is passionate about delivering a cost-effective service that encourages customers to reduce the impact on the environment.

This is because a fifth of UK greenhouse gas emissions are associated with food waste, making it a greater cause of global warming than plastic waste. By responsibly managing food waste, Keenan can cut back on the harmful emissions caused by rotting food.

The Macpac food waste collection vehicles will play a key role in the continued growth of the company in Manchester, where Keenan is forecasting to double its workforce in the next five years.

The new fleet of trucks boast a bespoke configuration that allows customers to track when their bin has been uplifted. With a top of the range, expanded fleet, Keenan believes it can accelerate its growth ambitions across the UK.

Currently processing over 100,000 tonnes of organic waste each year, the company turns food waste into premium grade compost or biofuel, which generates electricity at numerous anaerobic digestion plants (ADPs) across England.

Collections director, Claire Keenan, explains: “Scotland has already introduced legislation requiring all businesses that produce over 5kg of food waste per week to recycle it but this is still to come in England.

“However, with an increasing focus on green sustainability, forward-thinking businesses in England are already making better choices with their food waste management. Our new fleet of collection trucks puts us in an ideal position to expand our services and capitalise on the opportunities when new legislation comes into force in the next few years.”

The ambitious green company already partners with recycling and resource management company, SUEZ in Manchester, servicing a range of SUEZ’s customers including cafes, restaurants and hotels in England who are recycling their food waste.

In addition to collecting waste, the new range of trucks also promote the highest standard of road safety. Equipped with five-camera live streaming, including an in-cab camera, driver behaviour telematics, reversing radar and a cyclear system, the vehicles will maintain Keenan’s stringent health and safety and customer service standards.

Ms Keenan added: “Health and safety and customer service are a priority for us at Keenan Recycling and this investment in new equipment and technology will raise the bar in standards for waste collections.”

Five high-tech businesses locate to STFC’s Daresbury Laboratory

Five pioneering early stage businesses have located their businesses at Daresbury Laboratory where cutting edge research facilities, on-site expertise and business support will help them take their businesses to the next level.

Part of the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), and located within the vibrant campus at Sci-Tech Daresbury in the Liverpool City Region, Daresbury Laboratory’s world leading facilities, expertise and business support have played a key role in the growth and success of start-ups from across the North West and beyond for more than 10 years.

Here, businesses gain affordable and flexible access to high-specification laboratories and equipment, on-site expertise and business support that would usually be out of reach for a small business, enabling them to save money, reduce risk and grow into strong sustainable businesses.

The new companies span a range of sectors from using augmented reality technologies to develop screen-based story-telling experiences, to developing fast, accurate and cost effective Covid-19 testing technologies.

Delyth Edwards, Business Incubation Programmes Manager, said, “It’s really exciting to be welcoming these five new companies to Daresbury Laboratory. With our facilities, capabilities and expertise, we are perfectly placed to help start-ups solve their high-tech innovation challenges and enhance their competitiveness. From fast tracking the development of new products through 3D printing, to enabling the integration of advanced digital technologies such as virtual and augmented reality, and of course providing affordable lab and office space to carry out R&D, we can help businesses to reduce costs, time to market and some of the risk involved in product development. It is our mission to provide the correct environment for innovation and success, and it’s fantastic to help businesses located here go from strength to strength.”

The five new companies are:
Immersive Storylab: Using immersive technology to create moving ‘storyworlds’ with augmented reality 3D characters.

Envisage Space: Using advanced satellite technologies and analytics to improve GNSS (GPS, Galileo, etc) location accuracy in complex environments (built up cities, industrial areas, mines etc) and deliver associated products and services.

IoT Horizon: An Internet of Things Specialist evaluating clients’ ideas and challenges to guide them through the Digital Transformation process, turning concepts to profit, quickly. This includes all things IoT, sensors, security, software and electronics.

Alphabiolabs: Developing and providing fast, cost effective and accurate DNA, drug and alcohol testing and, more recently, Covid-19 testing.

LR Consultancy: Developing advanced purification technologies for the semiconductor and chemical manufacturing industries.

Several options are available to businesses, from leasing an exclusive-use lab to flexible access to bench space and high-specification equipment. There is also a vibrant, successful and growing suite of business incubation programmes available for small businesses, which includes collaborative programmes with both the European Space Agency and CERN, alongside the addition of a new digital prototyping facility, which includes a virtual and augmented reality workstation.

Daresbury Laboratory is located within Sci-Tech Daresbury, a nationally recognised Campus and community of high-tech business and innovation. Businesses located here gain unique access to the support, expertise and innovation opportunities offered by the wider campus. Here collaboration is key and a ‘home-for-life’ ethos makes it possible for, what may start as a one-person business using shared facilities, to scale up to a much larger business with its own dedicated space.

Roxtec supplies seals for hazardous areas to pharmaceutical group Guerbet during Dublin site upgrade

Bury-based safety seal manufacturer Roxtec has supported pharmaceutical group Guerbet with an upgrade project at its Irish manufacturing site.

Guerbet specialises in diagnostic and interventional medical imaging. It operates nine manufacturing sites around the world, including one at the Damastown Industrial Estate north of Dublin that makes active pharmaceutical ingredients for the firm’s MRI, X-Ray and interventional imaging products range.

Ronan Mills, Roxtec Market Manager for Ireland, said Roxtec was brought in to supply Guerbet with a range of specialist pipe and cable safety seals. Part of the project involved extending the County Dublin facility’s Ex-classified manufacturing areas. These areas contain an explosion hazard, requiring airtight seals that protect against the risk of explosion to be fitted at all pipe and cable entry points.

Mr Mills said: “We’ve worked with Guerbet on a regular basis, helping to support facility upgrades in hazardous areas. Our Ex cable transit devices are designed specifically for environments where it’s necessary to guard against the risk of explosion.

“We supplied Guerbet with transits offering Ex e protection, which provides increased safety for explosive gas atmospheres. These products have helped to create a safe work environment for the company’s employees by forming an airtight seal and isolating rooms with potentially hazardous gases. They also play a crucial role in protecting valuable equipment.”

All Roxtec’s Ex sealing solutions are certified according to the ATEX directive and the IECEx International Certification Scheme.

Various pipe and cable sealing solutions were installed during the project, including Roxtec G Ex transits with sealing modules, RS seals and R Ex transits. As well as preventing ignition of explosive atmospheres, Roxtec’s Ex products are also fire rated and watertight. The Ex range includes a wide variety of seals designed to handle different cable sizes and openings, making them incredibly flexible and suitable for countless scenarios.

Mr Mills added: “We created numerous drawings to support the Dublin upgrade project and have previously provided training to Guerbet’s installation teams. The firm typically requires seals to have 15% spare capacity so future upgrades are quick and straightforward. The flexible design of Roxtec’s transits ensured this was easily achieved.”

Sealing solutions manufactured by Swedish-owned Roxtec are widely used within manufacturing to protect people and assets from multiple hazards including fire, flooding, the risk of explosion and electromagnetic disturbance (see: Roxtec manufacturing industry . Renowned for their durability, reliability and flexibility, the firm’s products are found on land, at sea and underground. Other key markets include the power, infrastructure and process industries, as well as the marine and offshore sectors.

Trio of Ancoats hospitality clients for web agency, Riot & Rebel

0

Manchester based web design studio, Riot & Rebel have recently launched their third Ancoats hospitality client website, Nam.

Riot & Rebel were appointed by Vietnamese street food restaurant, VietShack; a luxury private hire & overnight stay venue, Copper & Blossom; and most recently NAM, a Vietnamese restaurant based in Cutting Room Square, Ancoats.

Louise Howells co-founder of Riot and Rebel, said:

“We’re so pleased to be working with our local neighbours, especially during the pandemic where we’ve seen an increase of paperless menus in restaurants. It’s proven to be incredibly important to ensure websites work well, especially as a digital presence is one of the only ways customers can safely interact with your company during these times.

During the first round of lockdown we worked with VietShack to design a bespoke online ordering system that was easy for customers to order from. And more crucially, for small businesses, we ensure our clients have complete control over the ordering system, without the usual costly overheads of a third-party delivery system.”

Largest cabinet manufacturer in Asia to open outlet in Altrincham

A relatively new retailer to the UK market, OPPEIN, the largest cabinet manufacturer in Asia, has taken the former Magnet retail outlet at 7-11 Stamford New Road, Altrincham

The outlet, within the landmark Stamford House complex, recently acquired by the Pervaiz Naviede Family Trust (PNFT), comprises 2,484 sq ft and has been taken on a 10 year lease at a rent of £41,500 per annum.

OPPEIN supplies all kinds of cabinets for both house owners and residential projects. Different from standard furniture, it designs custom made solutions based on the given dimensions offering a whole-house solution for its customers.

Christina Wang, managing director, OPPEIN Manchester Showroom, said: “We are looking forward to opening the Manchester showroom by the end of November. We are trying our best to help present the excellent customized cabinetry products which are in modern design and free from formaldehyde. OPPEIN also provide one-stop solution from measurement to installation”.

Daniel Lee, director, Regional Property Solutions, who acted for the landlord, Pervaiz Naviede Family Trust, said: “This letting to OPPEIN and the recently opened Your Green & Co within Stamford House were agreed pre lockdown and completed after the retail restrictions lifted and reflect the strength of Altrincham town centre. The doom and gloom surrounding the retail market is not universal as I am aware other suburban centres are benefitting from improved demand and take-up indicating a desire to shop local rather than city centre given the current circumstances.

“Despite the loss of Debenhams and the closure of the House of Fraser at the end of August, the purchase last October by Trafford Council and Bruntwood Works of the Stamford Quarter Shopping Centre, of which the House of Fraser is part, provides the opportunity to revive this retail enclave. They are now exploring new uses for the building and improving the public realm, which will be a key element in the overall ambitions to help secure Altrincham’s continued success.”

17 Greater Manchester manufacturing SMEs target growth through innovation with Made Smarter’s digital transformation workshops

Digital transformation workshops are designed to accelerate manufacturing growth by identifying digital tools and technologies that can maximise operational processes and enhance business growth.

Working with a Made Smarter adviser, the fully-funded workshop, bespoke to individual business needs, involves two online sessions, a two-hour diagnostic of the business’s product, services, processes and people, and a one-hour ‘findings’ presentation to make recommendations for practical solutions to overcome business challenges.

The workshop’s output, together with subsequent sessions with Made Smarter digital technology advisers, are used to develop a digital transformation strategy tailored to the needs of the business.

It will include an easy-to-use guide for decision-makers with recommended first steps, a technology roadmap, and information about how to get further support from the programme such as funding for digital tools.

There will also be a printable wall graphic to share with the wider workforce to bring everyone along on the journey.

17 businesses from Greater Manchester are among 51 from the region to sign up to the workshops since they were launched in August including: Norlin Compounding Services (Bolton); Howorth Air Technology (Bolton); Multiwood Products (Bury); D.R.M Industrial Fabrics (Bury); Visual Architects (Hyde); Clair de Lune (Manchester); Ajoto (Manchester); Thomas Storey Fabrications Group (Manchester); Riley & Son (Electromec) Ltd (Heywood); MSM aerospace fabricators (Middleton); Salt Separation (Rochdale); Rochdale Production Services (Rochdale); Castrads (Stockport); Arden Dies (Stockport); Polyfab Coatings and Systems (Wigan); Garton Limited (Wigan); Northwest Crankshaft and Machine (Wigan).

Ben Allan, Creative Director at Multiwood Products, a distributor and producer of kitchen door and components based in Bury, said: “The digital transformation workshop helped identify systems and processes that could be improved to help drive the success of the business.
“These ranged from continuous improvement methods through to reviewing and introducing new management processes.
“Made Smarter also helped create a roadmap that will guide the company towards achieving some of its goals, specifically associated with digitalisation.”

Sarah Poynter, Operations Manager at Arden Dies, a leader in the die-making and packaging industry based in Stockport, said: “Arden Dies has been at the forefront of innovation and technology adoption but recognises the need for continuous improvement in its processes and its people. We are delighted to be working with Made Smarter to develop digital transformation as part of our business strategy.”

The workshop will also identify other ways the Made Smarter programme can support a manufacturer’s transformation including: the trailblazing Made Smarter Leadership Programme delivered in partnership with Lancaster University, that helps develop the skills and confidence to pursue smarter manufacturing; fully-funded digital technology internships to help implement projects and bring a fresh perspective and new skills into the business; specialist advice about workforce development and skills; and funding for new digital tools and technologies such as data and systems integration, robotics and automation, or additive manufacturing.

Kevin Smith, Made Smarter technology expert and one of the specialists running the new workshops, said: “The use of technologies is becoming essential in order to cut costs and enhance the customer experience. Without capitalising on digital tools, SME manufacturers risk getting left behind.

“A digital transformation workshop will ultimately help a business gain a competitive advantage.

“As advisers we cut through the jargon to provide honest advice to help the business identify the most effective technologies to overcome their operational challenges. We take a holistic view of the business, and demonstrate the steps required in order to achieve a move to digital – it’s a quick way of gaining real, valuable insights.

“We have designed these workshops in a way that requires minimal time investment for manufacturers to turn the actions into results, while still allowing participants to focus on the day-to-day operations of the business.”

The new streamlined digital transformation workshops build on the success of the programme’s earlier face-to-face workshops, which helped makers during the first 18 months of the North West adoption pilot.

Donna Edwards, programme director for Made Smarter North West adoption pilot, said: “Upgrading to new technologies can seem like a complex and daunting task. SMEs can miss out on significant improvements to their operations. With a bespoke digital manufacturing roadmap we are able to provide the manufacturers a vision of how to move forward progressively and sustainably.

“The challenges created by Covid-19 offered us an opportunity to review how we can best help SME manufacturers ensure digital is a key part of their business strategy and take that first step to digital transformation.

“Our face to face workshops were a huge success and have made a substantial difference to many of the region’s makers.

“I am delighted that we have been able to adapt by redesigning and streamlining the workshop process to make it simpler, faster and more effective, and deliver it online.”
