GENERATION UK LAUNCHES DIGITAL EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES IN BIRMINGHAM, MANCHESTER, LONDON & LEEDS TO COMBAT YOUTH UNEMPLOYMENT

Youth employment non-profit organisation, Generation UK, today announces it is launching a new Digital Customer Support programme in four of the UK’s major cities. The programme will support 18 to 29 year-olds in accessing growing employment opportunities amidst rising redundancies for Britain’s young people.

In the latest unemployment figures from the Office of National Statistics, young people were reported as most at risk of losing their jobs as the redundancy rate increased fivefold on the year previous to 16.2 per 1,000. With a surge in e-commerce and remote services resulting from the pandemic, vacancies in Customer Support have remained high and growing with over twenty-thousand new roles expected to be opened in 2021 [1].

The Generation, UK Digital Customer Support (DCS) programme, is a five-week, full time bootcamp that will equip young people with the technical skills to obtain an entry-level role in customer support, as well as leveraging Generation’s proven expertise in behavioural and soft skill development. In 2021, this Generation UK programme aims to equip over 200 learners with the skills needed to enter the Customer Support sector.

Graduates from this Generation progamme may go on to work in start-up companies, medium enterprises, or leading corporations, and generally support users in addressing their needs over a variety of channels including email, phone, webchat and social media. The first intake of students will enrol on the programme in February 2021, delivered by instructors selected and trained by Generation. Students participating on the course will also come to benefit from free career coaching up to six months after completion, along with free online soft-skills courses to prepare them for applications.

In Manchester, Teleperformance, a worldwide leader in omnichannel customer experience management, is working in partnership with Generation as an employer partner. The company will be offering full-time customer support positions to a proportion of graduates, along with a bespoke programme support in the form of preparation sessions for candidates, bi-weekly forums, and monthly feedback calls to maximise success.

Following roll-out for students in Manchester and Birmingham, subsequent opportunities will be made available in London and Leeds in the coming months. The initial programmes are in part funded by the Fast Track Digital Workforce Fund, a joint venture between Greater Manchester Combined Authority and Lancashire Digital Skills Partnership and funded by the Department for Education Digital Bootcamp Fund to address the digital skills gaps across Greater Manchester and Lancashire.

Michael Houlihan, CEO of Generation UK, said: “Young people in the UK are disproportionately suffering from rising levels of unemployment in the wake of covid, and unfortunately many pathways into work have been shut down. We are delighted to be launching a new covid-resilient programme, specifically designed to target in-demand jobs. Moreover, it’s great to be able to deliver a skills training programme so that people can keep moving forward, even whilst stuck in lockdown. This new programme will help young people across the country to gain the skills needed to enter a segment of the economy that we know to be growing and recruiting.

“Today digital skills are in even greater demand and by working with the government, local authorities and employment partners we are able to help young people, often from disadvantaged backgrounds, to overcome the barriers into a new career.”

GMCA Employment, Skills and Digital Lead, Councillor Sean Fielding, said: “In Greater Manchester we want everyone whatever their age, location, or situation, to be able to benefit from the opportunities digital brings. The Fast Track Digital Workforce Fund was set up to help support our residents with accessible routes into digital employment and this training programme is an excellent example of this. This exciting new programme will enable our residents who have been the hardest hit by this pandemic to gain valuable skills and support to gain meaningful employment.”

Gary Slade, CEO of Teleperformance UK and RSA, said: “We’re truly proud to be collaborating with Generation UK on this important initiative, and grateful to play a part in combatting the ongoing challenges Britain’s youth faces today. Amidst the disruption, demand for valuable customer-facing roles in the tech industry is offering young talent a flourishing, stable career path – and we want to take this opportunity to help them along the way. At Teleperformance, we keep the development of diverse youth in the UK in high regards and strive to make our people feel they are part of something much bigger than just a job. That’s why we’ll be delivering a unique post-programme approach to help them become expert in the field and ensure continuous improvement in the world of work – with the aim of recruiting 500-1000 people this year.”

C&C Insurance Brokers toasts ten-years with Sharks

Premiership Rugby Club Sale Sharks and Stockport-based C&C Insurance Brokers Ltd have worked together since 2011 and the company also sponsors flanker and England International Tom Curry

Sale Sharks and long-term sponsor C&C Insurance Brokers are celebrating a ten-year partnership milestone this month – one of the longest in the club’s history.

The Stockport-based insurance broker – one of the top 50 independent brokers in the UK – first linked up with Sharks in 2011 and has sponsored England International, Tom Curry, since he made his breakthrough into the first team in 2016.

During that time, C&C has continued to work even closer with the club’s commercial team, taking on sponsorship of the exclusive Sale Sharks Business Club.

The Business Club offers special one-off events and experiences for corporate members and has continued to host a range of virtual events throughout the pandemic to help keep the business community together.

Both the main hospitality and platinum suites at the AJ Bell Stadium are also sponsored by C&C, and despite fans not currently being allowed to attend fixtures under government guidance, the firm’s Managing Director, Malcolm Cooke, is looking forward to the day when that changes.

He said “We’ve loved working with Sale Sharks for the past decade and very much see ourselves as part of the Sharks family.

“We first joined up with Sale to help promote the C&C brand with an audience of company owners, decision makers and high net worth individuals, and we’ve seen a huge return on that decision. It’s a partnership that’s delivered a lot of benefits for us as a company and we’re really excited to keep building on that.

“We’ve supported Tom Curry for a number of seasons now and with a new Director of Rugby joining the club in Alex Sanderson, there are definitely exciting times ahead for the club.

“Many of our employees are big fans and we are all missing the experience that comes with attending live sporting fixtures. But we’re confident those days will come again, and we will be there for the celebration when they do.”

Mark Cueto MBE, Sale Sharks’ Commercial Director, said: “We’re really pleased that the team at C&C have hit such a big milestone with us. They’re a long-term partner and very much part of the fabric of Sale Sharks.

“Having been with us for so many years, it just reinforces how much we value long-term partnerships and work as hard as we can to make sure our corporate sponsors continue to benefit from the partnerships we have in place.

“It’s no secret that it’s been an incredibly challenging time for the sports industry, but it’s brilliant to see that we have such a strong network of partners like C&C that continue to back us, and we’ll continue to do whatever we can in their best interests.”

More than £150m Covid support paid to city’s businesses as new extended grant scheme comes online

The Council has paid out £151m against more than 15,000 grant applications since March 2020 and has now announced an extended scheme to support organisations not eligible for previous financial help.

The Council has also provided £144m in Business Rate relief to reduce the financial burden on businesses impacted by the pandemic. And £820,500 has been provide to people who have been told to self-isolate by the NHS Test and Trace app.

The new extended discretionary scheme follows different iterations of the Local Restrictions Support Grant (LRSG) and Additional Restrictions Grant (ARG), which have been open to eligible businesses over the last 10 months to support those impacted during the pandemic.

The  extended ARG  scheme will focus on businesses that have not been eligible in previous schemes but have been significantly affected by the pandemic and wider lockdownand will target funds to areas that are essential to the city’s economic recovery.

The aim of this extended scheme is to protect jobs, services and businesses vital to the economy.

The scheme will be funded through £17m of Government

grants which the Council has been encouraged to distribute as soon as possible.

Businesses and Organisations that will be in the scope of the extended scheme:

  • Additional Business groups (e.g. Childcare Day Nurseries, culture and tourism venues).

  • Support to groups outside of the main scheme (e.g. taxi drivers, self-employed company directors of very small businesses without property related costsbusinesses whose trade has been affected by the downturn in daytime commuter trade)

  • Further sub groups to support recovery (e.g. charities, important cultural, entertainment and convention facilities, business important to the city’s economy.)

This could either take the form of:

  • An ongoing package of support until mid Feb and potentially to the end of March 2021

  • A one-off payment to mirror the lockdown grant for in-scope businesses.

To be eligible, organisations cannot be in scope for any other grant scheme.

Applications for claims must be made online.

The extended scheme will be live to applicants from Wednesday 10 February

For more detail information about the scheme or to apply for the scheme, visit:

Sir Richard Leese, Leader of Manchester City Council, said: Over the last 10 months we have consistently found that businesses have slipped through the cracks and have not been eligible for financial support. We have been able to help some of these through discretionary payments, but still we are seeing lots of organisations and individuals who haven’t had any financial support since the beginning of the pandemic.

“Clearly that is completely unsustainable for anyone and we will be using our discretion through this extended fund to provide much needed help. If you or someone you know is within this cohort, know that help is available.”

Charity and developers join forces with UK first initiative to tackle city centre homelessness

0

Manchester-based charity, Embassy, is planning to create a new community to help the city’s homeless and vulnerable men get back on their feet, with consultation on a planning application launching today.

Supported by developers Peel L&P and CAPITAL&CENTRIC, the Embassy Village will provide up to 40 new permanent modular homes, made from repurposed shipping containers. It will be located on a self-contained, currently derelict site owned by Peel L&P, below the railway arches between the Bridgewater Canal and River Irwell in the city centre.

It will provide safe, secure homes for people who are homeless or at the risk of being homeless with in-house start to end support and routes into work. Vulnerable people are housed and then surrounded by the support and training they need to leave the cycle of homelessness.

Alongside high quality homes the Embassy Village will include a Village Hall, which will become a community hub and training and mentoring facility for residents, and communal outdoor space with plenty of greenery, a multi use sports area, space to grow vegetables as well as external eating and socialising areas.

Sid Williams of Embassy said:

“This pandemic has only gone to further strain the resources of the poorest in our society and we sadly expect to see homelessness increase. We recently housed a chap who spent seven years going from shelter to shelter ever waiting for his golden ticket to a council flat – it never came. Our approach is to provide rented housing and formally end homelessness from day one. We aim to get people into full time work and private rental sector housing, rather than council housing and benefits

“We interview everyone we assist and what we look for is a willingness to make progress, learn and, where possible, to work. The Village will provide residents with their own front door, and teach them the life skills they need to become independent and start contributing to society again. We’re so grateful for the generous support Peel L&P and CAPITAL&CENTRIC have shown us, as well as all the other companies who’ve made this project possible.”

The initiative sees husband and wife team, Sid and Tess Williams, continue to think outside the box and innovate in their fight improve the way homelessness is tackled in our city. They launched the charity in 2019 and started by finding a second life for a luxury tour bus as an emergency shelter and support centre to help people get off the street, housed and into work.

James Whittaker, Executive Director at Peel L&P said:

“It’s been a real joy and a privilege to bring together the business community to help create our vision to deliver a special project to reduce Manchester’s homelessness by transforming our land beneath some railway arches in the city into much needed housing for the homeless.

“We’re delighted to partner with Embassy, a charity who will make a huge difference in helping vulnerable adults to obtain better lives through their restoration programme by getting them into housing, employment and independent living.

“We’re proud to be able to provide the land for this Housing First Community and we would like thank the generosity and support of everyone who has been involved in this project to bring this vision to fruition. We hope to gain further support needed at the public consultation.”

Tim Heatley, co-founder of social impact developers CAPITAL&CENTRIC and Chair of the Greater Manchester Mayor’s Charity said:

“We’ve worked with Embassy for the last few years, helping them to get the original bus off the ground, but we’ve always had the vision to create something more permanent that gives people their own front door. Making sure it’s really high quality, with communal areas like the village hall and sports area, has been super important as we want the future residents to be proud of their community.”

Sir Richard Leese, Leader of Manchester City Council, said:

“Meeting the growing demand for emergency accommodation to support people vulnerable to homelessness is a major challenge – particularly at this time of year when the number of people asking for support, particularly people sleeping rough, is at its height. Developing a Housing First opportunity in the city is welcome and I hope this type of community has the potential to provide life-changing help for people facing homelessness in Manchester.”

Plans for Embassy Village are being launched amidst the closure of dormitory style shelters due to lockdown and social distancing measures, and growing concerns across frontline charities that there will be an increased need for homelessness support and temporary accommodation services as a result of the pandemic. Government COVID-19 support measures, such as a ban on evictions and funding to house rough sleepers in hotels, are also due to end in the spring, heightening fears across the city’s charity sector that this could drive a spike in homelessness.

At the village, the charity’s team of resettlement workers and volunteers will provide wrap-around support of at least six hours per week per resident to equip them with a range of life skills including shopping & budgeting, cooking, and how to manage a home as well as a course designed to help residents unpack past traumas and grow in confidence. The self-contained site will be managed 24/7 by Embassy’s experienced team.

Embassy’s training and mentoring programme is also being designed to boost residents’ work readiness through job application, interview support and wider training. The charity plans to build on its successful track record of helping residents to resettle into secure long-term accommodation and find routes back into work by collaborating with local employers. 12 companies are already signed up to offer employment. Embassy would be glad to hear from more companies interested in partnering.

Manchester-based business achieves global endorsement from Hewlett-Packard

Following rigorous testing, HP reveals UV-C light is the only completely safe and reliable way to disinfect virtual reality headsets

Multinational IT company, Hewlett Packard (HP) has recommended Uvisan’s UV-C cabinets as a safe and effective method of disinfection which guarantees no damage to its virtual reality (VR) headsets and HMD (head mounted displays).

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, finding a product to recommend as an approved means for disinfecting its newest VR headsets became a priority for HP, leading to a research project between HP and the Manchester-based UV-C disinfection business.

HP carried out a series of rigorous tests using Uvisan’s UV-C disinfecting cabinets as an alternative to standard chemicals and disinfectant wipes. Tests were carried out on both new and existing HP appliances, simulating two years of daily UV-C use on the headsets, to determine whether there were any negative impacts of UV-C exposure on the items. The tests examined appearance, functionality and any mechanical or structural deterioration over a three-month testing period.

Following the tests, the UV-C light is recommended as the only disinfection method for HP’s VR headsets and Uvisan is recommended as a supplier. Other cleaning procedures, such as the use of alcohol or disinfectant wipes, can damage the lenses and sensitive optical and sensor surfaces, as the chemicals contained in the wipes can cause damage, and the wiping action itself can also cause damage to surfaces.

David Marks, Chairman of Uvisan said: “This recommendation from HP, a highly-regarded tech giant, adds weight to our assertion that UV-C is the gold standard of disinfection in today’s Covid environment for almost any touched and shared items, particularly sensitive and valuable electronic equipment. It is far more effective and time efficient than using wipes, ultimately saving time and money and limiting waste sent to landfills.

“Our easy-to-use UV-C cabinets require no liquids or chemicals that cause damage to delicate technology, and the testing done with HP illustrates that UV-C exposure is completely safe for a wide range of appliances. The cabinets can quickly and thoroughly disinfect handheld hardware, including phones, laptops, tablets headsets and many more with a five-minute cleaning cycle that kills 99.99% of bacteria and viruses using medical grade lamps. For example, Uvisan’s cabinets allow simultaneous disinfection and electrical charging of up to 36 VR headsets or 70 tablets in 5 minutes. Our cabinets are lockable to ensure high value items are protected and built-in wheels allow for flexible deployment.

“With the Uvisan cabinet, businesses that rely on shared VR headsets can guarantee quick and effective turnaround of their headsets so that each user has a pristine headset. This avoids the need to invest in extra headsets and reduces the downtime in between uses. We expect UV-C disinfection to become the standard and best-recommended approach for more hardware manufacturers and retailers in the coming months.”

Following the thorough testing, HP has recommended Uvisan for disinfecting its range of HMD, VR and mixed reality headsets, as UVC light does not cause damage to equipment as can occur with alcohol/disinfectant wipes. Uvisan is recommended by HP for the following: HP WMR Headset, HP Reverb G1 VR Headset, HP Reverb G2 VR Headset, HP Reverb G2 Omnicept Edition).

Uvisan cabinets are already being used by a number of organisations across multiple industries, including universities, offices, creative/production studios, schools, distribution centres, commercial cleaning companies, and waste management companies. With many different types of handheld and portable electronic devices being disinfected, from laptops, tablets, headsets, hard drives, tools, handheld scanners and other shared technology.

GC Business Finance calls for firms to come forward as GM BBLS Fund secures 400 local jobs

0

Social impact lender GC Business Finance has seen huge demand for Bounce Back Loan (BBLS) funding since being accredited in November 2020, with 400 jobs secured as a result of loans provided in the local area.

With only a limited time available to secure the funding, GCBF is now calling for any eligible firms in Greater Manchester to apply for a Bounce Back Loan.

In November, GC Business Finance became the first lender in the UK accredited to provide BBLS to be backed by a local authority, managing £10m of emergency funding from Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA).

The fund targets eligible SMEs unable to access Bounce Back loans from their own banks and which are based in and trading from GM. GCBF is offering BBLS loans of up to £50,000 packaged with integrated business support in a local approach unique across the UK.

This includes Pearson Quality Homes, a Wigan-based residential developer, that secured a five-figure loan in December. As a result of Covid-19, the firm had seen a development in Wrightington delayed by 13 weeks, and will use the funding to complete the development and consider new sites across Lancashire.

As part of the Growth Company, GC Business Finance works alongside GC Business Growth Hub and other sister businesses to provide a tailored combination of financial and business support to SMEs across Greater Manchester.

The loans, which are 100 per cent guaranteed by the Government, are estimated to be eligible for approximately 98 per cent of Greater Manchester SMEs.

Paul Breen, Director at GC Business Finance, said: “We have seen extraordinary levels of demand from Greater Manchester SMEs for this support, emphasising a key funding gap that still exists for businesses looking to recover and grow following the impact of the pandemic.

“Driving the resilience of the Greater Manchester’s economy is something we are extremely passionate about, and we remain very much open for business. With more funds available for a limited period, I would therefore encourage any business whose existing providers are not a part of the BBLS scheme to get in touch and see how we can help you.”

Lou Cordwell, Chair of the Greater Manchester Local Enterprise Partnership (GM LEP), said: “This funding offers a vital lifeline and we urge eligible businesses to contact GC Business Finance to apply. Businesses in Greater Manchester continue to show their resilience in the face of incredibly challenging circumstances. The pandemic has left previously thriving SMEs with reduced or no income while still needing to meet operating costs.

“As we look towards the second half of 2021 with cautious optimism, a Bounce Back Loan could be decisive for a struggling business navigating the coming months. The scheme’s delivery through GC Business Finance also offers businesses a responsive, local partner, with a range of complementary support available through the Growth Company network.”

Growth Hub invites applicants for new Exceed programme to help businesses achieve their goals

Medium and large-sized digital, creative and tech businesses in Greater Manchester can now profit from a new, fully-funded programme.

The programme will be delivered by GC Business Growth Hub, part of The Growth Company and part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund.

Participants will also have access to workshops and peer-to-peer support events, plus virtual leadership tables with industry specialists.

Sarah Novotny, the Hub’s Digital, Creative and Tech Sector Business Support Lead, said: “This is a brilliant opportunity for businesses that are hungry for accelerated success and need some additional help to get there.

“Digital, creative and tech specialists will give you the one-to-one support you need to get the most out of it, as well as enable you to tackle your specific business challenges.

“We are here to help you to thrive, make your vision a reality and get your business functions firing on all cylinders.”

Applications for the programme can be made at exceed.businessgrowthhub.com.

Places are limited and eligible businesses are advised to apply early.

Businesses looking to access specialist support can visit www.businessgrowthhub.com for more information about the extensive range of services offered by the Hub.

This and other GC Business Growth Hub projects are part-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) as part of a project designed to help ambitious SMEs achieve growth and increase employment in Greater Manchester. The Hub is also supported by the Greater Manchester Combined Authority and Greater Manchester local authorities.
