KOMI group adds to team with three key appointments including new Head of Editorial

KOMI group – the Manchester headquartered social media marketing company – is continuing to grow after appointing three key new members of staff to its media and social teams. Their arrivals follow the news a few months ago that its turnover hit £1m for the first time and that it aims to double that figure in 2021.

The first new starter is Sian Broderick who joins as KOMI Media’s new head of editorial. Sian will be running and overseeing all aspects of the KOMI’s editorial output across its pages and will implementing a brand-new editorial strategy as well mentoring and growing the team. She joins KOMI from Global in London where she was a senior social editor running Capital FM’s social media channels. Sian has also worked at LADbible Group. She holds a BA (Hons) in Multimedia Journalism from the University of Salford and the National Council for the Training of Journalists Diploma in Journalism.

Emily Brewster has joined as KOMI’s new social media presenter and voiceover artist. She has a long-standing passion for presenting and bringing stories to life so will be working across all KOMI social channels including It’s Gone Viral, Happiest and Ultimate to develop scripts and create engaging and original voiceover and video content. She will also be working on in-house projects and, when COVID restrictions finally lift, will work with the team to create more original content including games and challenges. Emily has previously worked as a PR consultant for technology brands and as a broadcast journalist for Global.

The final new starter is James Wiles who is the firm’s new original producer. James’ new role will see him create original video content for KOMI and its partners. He started his career at Jungle Creations before moving to Electric House as a video producer for both branded and original content.

Andrew Trotman – managing director of KOMI group – said: “2021 is set to be a big year for the group so we are delighted to be bringing in these three talented creatives. Each bring fantastic experience that I know will add value to the business and our clients as we continue to drive forward and grow.”

Sian added: “As a social-first editor, KOMI group felt like the perfect fit for me as it has amassed an impressive portfolio of highly engaged social channels. My focus will be on helping to ramp up their offering and reach millions of people with a whole range of engaging, interesting, targeted, and diverse stories.”

Since the start of the coronavirus crisis, KOMI has won major contracts with brands including SWAN, Mars Pets and The Flava People. It has also committed to take out additional office space at its base in Beehive Mill, Ancoats. Earlier this year, it rebranded from It’s Gone Viral and restructured which saw it become a three divisional agency business consisting of dedicated social media, marketing, and licensing teams.

Its team of content creators, analysts and video producers have made and then distributed video content and viral campaign adverts for international brands such as BBC Films, O2, Universal, Bud Light and Disney.

Content has been shared across its Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, TikTok, Instagram and LinkedIn accounts including the It’s Gone Viral page, which is dedicated to relatable, informative, and educational content; as well as Go Fetch, a platform for dog lovers to connect with one another; Happiest, which focusses on bringing the most entertaining and uplifting content and real-life stories; and Ultimate which is a community based around crafts and lifestyle.

On average the company delivers over one billion views across its portfolio of pages each month.

THG customers across more than 30 brands such as LOOKFANTASTIC, Myprotein and Zavvi will now be able to check out with Zip’s flexible, interest-free ‘Pay in 4’ product.

Founded in 2013 in Sydney, Zip is one of the fastest-growing Buy Now, Pay Later players in the world with over 6.4 million Zip customers globally. Anthony Drury, Zip UK Managing Director, says: “We’re growing rapidly in the UK and our partnership with THG only confirms our intention. There is an increasing appetite among retailers to embed BNPL payment domestically and internationally. Our flexible products are accessible across many retail sectors from fashion, health & beauty and groceries to homeware, entertainment, sport and travel.”

MANCHESTER TECH STARTUP HAS JOB CREATION BOOM!

0

Manchester-based business D55, an Amazon Web Services (AWS) consultancy partner, is looking to recruit circa 20 new IT specialists to work on complex cloud native IT projects within the energy and sustainability industry. The new recruits can be based anywhere in the UK, thanks to D55’s progressive approach to helping employees achieve a favourable work-life balance. The flexible remote-working policy will grant them the choice to either work from home or report into the Manchester head office.

Tech talent acquisition innovator, Reedmace Solutions is working with D55 to attract and hire the specialists, and rapidly scale-up the organisation.

The new teams will work across a variety of projects, including developing new software products and getting them ready for market, helping companies move existing IT applications to the cloud, and providing hands-on support to project teams that lack manpower or development expertise in AWS. The company is looking for highly skilled IT professionals ranging from Business analysts, developers, testers and quality assurance. D55 is using Reedmace Solutions innovative approach which empowers tech startups to do their own Talent Acquisition and in-house recruitment, rather than relying upon traditional recruitment agencies, which can be extremely costly and less suited to rapid scaling.

Jonathan Rothwell, co-owner of D55, commented: “We are really pleased to be working with Reedmace Solutions in a bid to get the right talent to help drive our business forward. We chose to work with an equally, ambitious facilitator who understands our unique requirements in terms of technical skills, cultural fit, and our goal to grow our own teams.”

“We deliver products that solve industry problems, largely in the energy and sustainability sectors and as our business is growing with immense speed, we want to ensure we have the resources to continue to elevate our organisation.”

Rhys Jacob, co-owner of D55, added: “Having secured a significant amount of new business in a relatively short time, we need to expand our headcount rapidly. However, learning how to attract the right people to expand our team ourselves both now, and in the future is of huge importance to us and will save us time and money.”

Dan Corcoran, owner of Reedmace Solutions, commented: “I am extremely proud to be working with such a prolific startup at the cutting edge of cloud technology. In the past, startups such as D55, had few options when scaling rapidly and often resorted to using recruitment agencies, due to the absence of an in-house Talent Acquisition function.

“We are helping D55 by immediately supporting the Talent Acquisition and hiring process whilst giving them the ability to be as self-sufficient moving forward as possible.”

“Being able to hire the best talent on your own, is the secret behind successfully scaling tech startups. The company can harness this ability when they understand the difference between Talent Acquisition and recruitment which is only a small subset of the overall field.

D55 enlisted Reedmace Solutions to gain immediate Talent Acquisition competency and together we are now growing the headcount strategically, with minimum use of recruitment agencies who charge simply for the introduction of candidates.

New Operations Manager for Yipiyap

Greater Manchester peer learning organisation Yipiyap has appointed Jess Shepherd to the role of Company Operations Manager, six years after she joined the company as a peer tutor herself.

In her new role, which starts this Summer, Jess will be overseeing and supporting the team of regional directors as they provide peer tutors to schools and colleges all over the UK, while seeking to expand the business into new areas and build its franchise offering.

Yipiyap, based in Altrincham, harnesses the talent of high-achieving school leavers and places them with schools for a unique gap year. They provide support to teaching staff and help students achieve better understanding and results in the core subjects of English, maths and science. Being close in age, they are relatable to the younger pupils and have proven results in raising grades, supporting GCSE resits and managing online learning.

Says Jess: “I first joined Yipiyap after completing my A Levels at Loreto Grammar School and when the opportunity came up to join the company straight afterwards, I jumped at the chance. I have loved helping to recruit and train other peer tutors and see them help more young people achieve their potential: so many of our tutors change their plans and end up working in some sort of educational role, as it’s so satisfying. Those that don’t still go on to further education or employment with an amazing new set of skills, thanks to the experience.”

Founder and former teacher Anne Morris says: “Jess joined us six years ago and was a fantastic peer tutor, providing support across three schools in Greater Manchester. As Regional Director and Senior Regional Director she has been pivotal in our growth and has helped us expand fourfold since 2015. We now have tutors all over the UK and Jess’s insights and experience make her the perfect person to take the company even further, benefitting more young people than ever.”

New offices and new jobs announced as Reward Finance Group breaks another record.

Reward Finance Group delivered its strongest ever new business performance in March, resulting in it breaking through the £90m lending milestone for the first time, and continuing a month-on-month growth trend since last Summer.

In addition, Reward can today announce that it is expanding its geographical footprint and will be launching in both the Midlands and Scotland over the Summer.

To cater for the impressive growth and maintain its high level of support for SME clients, Reward has strengthened its client relationship management team with the internal promotions of Bethany Hunnebell and Claire Mitchell to portfolio managers in its Leeds and Manchester offices, respectively.

Tom Newhouse has also been promoted to operational excellence manager and will support Reward in continuing to deliver and improve top quality service and operational effectiveness, through best practice and IT investment, as the business grows and opens new locations.

The company is also recruiting a number of portfolio executives and has recently appointed Cassey McNulty to fulfil this role in its Leeds office.

Speaking about the performance of the group and expansion plans, group managing director, Nick Smith, said,

“Despite the challenges of the last 12 months, the Reward team has performed phenomenally well in funding SMEs to either take advantage of opportunities or helping them to navigate through the pandemic.

“This is helped by the fact we are receiving an increasing number of referrals as our reputation for quick decision-making, and flexibility in providing funding solutions, grows among introducers nationwide.

“Whilst we have always helped SMEs across the whole of the UK, they have been serviced from our existing Manchester and Leeds offices. However, with the current market dynamics and growth in alternative finance, and the fact we like to meet all our clients face-to-face, we now feel the time is right for an operational presence in new regions, starting with Scotland and the Midlands.”

TLT advises on major NI retail park acquisition

0

TLT has advised Manchester-based David Samuel Property Management on its £9.7m acquisition of Lisnagelvin Retail Park in Londonderry.

The 62000 sq. ft. shopping venue is home to three major retailers – Next, Matalan and TK Maxx/Homesense – and is the only open use retail park in the region.

The acquisition is the second David Samuel Properties has made in Londonderry after buying Crescent Link Retail Park in 2019, and follows the £18.9m acquisition of Holywood Exchange Retail Park on the outskirts of Belfast in December 2020 on which TLT also advised.

The TLT team was led by real estate partner Judith Allen, with support from banking partner Richard Houliston and associate Mary-Jane Byrne.

Judith Allen, partner at TLT, says:

“We’re delighted to support David Samuel Properties with another addition to their extensive portfolio through this major retail park acquisition, and are encouraged by the significant interest they continue to show in the NI market.

It is great to see a continued high level of interest from both UK and overseas investors in Northern Ireland’s real estate market and expect this trend to remain as investors continue to benefit from high yields.”

Andrew Berkeley, Managing Director at David Samuel Properties says:

“We are delighted to have successfully concluded a further addition to our Retail Park portfolio with TLT who, as usual, have been professional and commercial throughout. We look forward to working with them on future transactions.”

Hovington announce management restructure on 40th anniversary

0

A Rochdale civil engineering company has marked its 40th anniversary by announcing a management restructure.

Hovington was established in 1981 and has evolved into a specialist groundwork, highways, remediation, utilities and drainage contractor working across a number of sectors including retail, industrial, commercial, public sector and student accommodation.

Clients have included IKEA, Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda, John Lewis, Airbus, Safestore, Universal Container Services and Lidl.

From March 2021, the company announced that the founders’ sons – John Maloney Jr and Martin Quinn – would be exiting the business with John’s son Jack Maloney becoming the financial director, Mike Penny appointed as the construction director and Nick Green assuming the role of managing director.

Jack Maloney, who is the third generation of his family to work for Hovington, said: “Hovington has been in my blood all my life. I remember coming in from the age of five or six helping my Dad around the office.

“Martin and Dad decided that in the year of our 40th anniversary now was the right time for them to step away. They’ve built the foundations and values of today’s business and I’d love nothing more than to add another 40 years to the Hovington legacy and hand it on to the next generation.”

Managing director Nick Green described Hovington as one of “the North West’s best-kept secrets”.

He said: “Ironically, you don’t see a lot of what we do because a lot of our work tends to be buried. IKEA in Sheffield is a good example of the type of projects we undertake. It’s a very imposing building but our job was to take a former foundry site and get the land ready for an IKEA to be built on. It was worth £4m to us.”

The company have been involved in string of varied projects including the groundwork for the retail and leisure destination Rochdale Riverside, the infrastructure for the newly refurbished JunctionNINE Retail Park in Warrington, the car park and external works for Hopwood Hall College in Rochdale, the IKEA store in Ashton, works at Oldham College and creating the structure that Manchester’s famous archway in Chinatown is built on.

The company has also secured a £1m plus fast track contract to carry out the groundworks on a major logistics hub in Stoke for GLP Gazeley Properties & TSL Projects. The management team are hoping to use this as a springboard for the planned growth moving forward.

Mr Green said: “We work across the North but we do a lot of work in our hometown of Rochdale alongside the likes of other Rochdale businesses including Alderburgh; Solutek; Ken Taylor Supplies; Marshalls Quarry Products; PPC Concrete Products, Zen Internet and Takeuchi.”

He said the company was looking for growth in 2021 and would be working with Willmott Dixon on the second phase of Rochdale Riverside, which includes plans to build 220 apartments and a new hotel.

“It’s fantastic to see the regeneration of the town centre and I genuinely believe the best days are ahead of us,” he said.

“As a company Hovington is incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved in the last 40 years. Our focus now is on building on that and looking forward to the future.”

Formed in 2017, Yumi is now a multi-million-pound business having seen huge success in the UK where it has several major retail deals.

Following significant demand from distributors in Dubai, Yumi made the UAE a key part of its international expansion plans, registering the business in the country at the beginning of the year.

Yumi’s chewable supplements will be available to buy in-store from several branches of Marina Pharmacy and online via 800 Pharmacy, Instashop and Deliveroo.

Sebastien Vanderlinden, CEO at Yumi, said: “The UAE is an emerging market with a health-conscious population where we want to establish Yumi as a well-known brand so we are delighted to be launching with Marina Pharmacy and 800 Pharmacy.”

“It was always our aim to launch in the UAE, but after conversations with numerous distributors in Dubai, we decided to accelerate our plans due to growing demand. We’ve had great success in the UK since we formed the business back in 2017 and we’re looking forward to replicating our winning formula in the UAE.”

Barrier breaking partnership to empower black women into tech careers in the North West

A new partnership is set to transform the lives of black women across the North West and inspire their entrepreneurial ambitions in the tech sector by offering fairer access to digital skills training and career opportunities.

Innovation hub HOST, the Home of Skills & Technology, operated by IN4.0 Group, is partnering with socio-creative organisation Niyo Enterprise, to support its expansion into the North West and empower black women into tech careers.

While 17 per cent of women work in the tech sector in the UK, only around 0.7 per cent are from a black, African, Caribbean or black British background according to BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT. Women from a BAME background are also less likely to have leadership roles in the tech sector, despite having a higher level of education than other groups.

In a bid to challenge this gender diversity disparity, HOST based at Media City, is collaborating with Niyo Enterprise to break the barriers of entry to the tech sector facing black women to create a supportive community for them to access digital skills training and secure employment in the industry.

The inclusion and support of black women will be applied across all of HOST’s Skills City academies which will include Black Codhers, a specialist software engineering bootcamp, as well as two Black Disruptor programmes, a data science and project management course for black women and an XR bootcamp focused on building 3D and immersive technology skills as a Unity developer.

There is a huge demand from black women to learn new digital skills as Niyo Network’s Black Codhers bootcamp recently received over 3,000 applications from all over the world. As a result, it has upskilled 50 black women into software developer roles in high profile companies such as Citibank and KPMG.

This collaboration is part of HOST’s Skills City, a digital technology academies bootcamp dedicated to transforming talent diversity in the North West tech sector with a commitment to fast-tracking 450 people into digital technology careers every year.

Established in 2018, it will be the first time that Birmingham-based Niyo Enterprise expands into the North West alongside its not-for-profit arm, Niyo Network, which aims to equip and train black women who are unemployed or are at risk of unemployment.

HOST is working closely with employers and the CEO and co-founder of Niyo Enterprise Oyin Adebayo, to ensure that there are learning and employment opportunities available for black women across all of its programmes.

This includes FreelanceHER 100, a ground-breaking fully funded training accelerator for women working to launch and grow sustainable businesses in digital, creative, media and technology sectors.

Oyin said: “We are excited to be working with HOST and the wider Skills City co-operative to ensure that black women are part of pioneering change in the tech industry. Our major aim has always been to see as many black women as possible in high impact industries. We believe that with this partnership, black women would not just be able to dream but also create and thrive in the tech industry.”

Mo Isap, CEO of IN4.0 Group, operators of HOST, said: “We are proud to be working with Oyin and Niyo Enterprise to offer a range of opportunities and choices to black women in the North West so they can be fully supported throughout their journey into tech careers. Whether they are seeking a job in the tech industry, looking to upskill in digital or aspire to be a tech entrepreneur, we want to ensure that there are opportunities available for them here at HOST and across the region.

“Supporting diversity and inclusion and removing the barriers to entry to the tech sector is at the heart of Skills City. Our ambition is to continue to support women who remain largely underrepresented in the tech community, which is why in this exciting new chapter for HOST, we have committed that 50 per cent of all our learners will be women.”

Reform Radio supports young people to kickstart their creative industry careers

Manchester-based radio station has worked with over 300 young people to help develop their creative careers in the past 12 months

Reform Radio, a gateway organisation for businesses taking part in the government’s Kickstart Scheme, has helped almost 300 young people launch their careers in the creative industries in the past year.

The Kickstart Scheme provides funding for employers to create job placements for 16 to 24-year-olds on Universal Credit, helping them begin their careers in the creative industries.

The Manchester-based online radio station, situated at Department Bonded Warehouse in Enterprise City, has also generated £226,800 for the Freelancer Economy by providing almost 500 paid freelance opportunities for the creative industries in Greater Manchester in 2020.

Reform Radio is working with a series of organisations as part of the scheme, including a number of other North West-based creative and media companies, such as Sonder Radio, Beatstream and Crocodile Media.

Over the last financial year, Reform Radio also delivered 618 creative digital and employability workshops for young people in Manchester, provided mental health and wellbeing support to more than 100 people, and delivered 22 Work Clubs which supported 285 young adults and 218 pastoral sessions. The Work Clubs saw 80% of those who took part progress on to employment, volunteering, education or training.

Reform Radio’s achievements for young people in Manchester bodes well for the region’s efforts to tackle high levels of youth unemployment. It delivers its services from a city centre base at Department Bonded Warehouse. The dynamic managed workspace gives Reform and its wider community access to the support network of creative and digital businesses also based in the building.

Rachel Roger, Director at Reform Radio said: “Being a gateway organisation for companies taking part in the Kickstart Scheme is so fulfilling for us and we are pleased to be playing a part in supporting those hit hardest by the pandemic. We’re thrilled to have been able to play an instrumental part in starting the careers of so many young people in the region.

“Being based in Department Bonded Warehouse, a building that we share with other creative businesses, has been so helpful to what we have achieved. Having that network close by to support the work we’re doing and to inspire and teach the young people involved has been invaluable and we look forward to developing this network so we can continue the work in the future.”

Department’s workspaces are flexible to accommodate the workshops and in-person events Reform organises to facilitate its Kickstarter initiatives, including physical and virtual events.

Anthony Powell, managing director at Department, said: “Young people have been disproportionately impacted by the pandemic and its effect on the job market. Reform’s commitment to creating opportunities for the young people of Greater Manchester is fantastic and embodies our principles of work, wellness and social. We are proud to have Reform as a member at Department Bonded Warehouse and to have had a role in facilitating the amazing things achieved in the last 12 months.”
