Northwest-based signage manufacturer announces eleven appointments

Widd Signs is celebrating after recently announcing eleven appointments to its team following the news of a multitude of new business wins.

The St Helens and Leeds-based digital signage specialists have also added four new people to its installation team including Gavin Taylor, Kevin Miller, and Paul Wilkin – three previous employees. The three have returned to the business alongside new recruit Konnor Oldfield, joining for the first time. Their responsibilities include installing signage for clients across the UK and overseas.

Joining the installation team are five recruits to the company’s North West base including project manager Colin Davies and project coordinator Olivia Arnold-Woolham. The duo have doubled the existing project management team in St Helens which is responsible for ensuring the efficient processing of orders through the factory and the highest standards of delivery for customers.

New apprentices Kai Bednarski and Jamie Heeson also join the St Helens manufacturing facility where they are studying Signage Technician Level 3, a 24-month distance learning course at Walsall College.

Phil Johnson also joins as assistant paint sprayer in Widd Signs’ North West paint and finishing team.

The company is further strengthened by the appointment of graphic designer Matt Leyland who joins the company with three years’ industry experience and Kay Dickson joins as project coordinator at Widd Signs’ Leeds base following a career in project management for several print companies.

The appointments have come as the business continues to experience strong demand for its signage services, which include consultancy, design, production, installation, and maintenance.

The company continues to invest in its 20,000 sq ft St Helens factory which it acquired in 2020, including the purchase of new technology to further enhance the firm’s capabilities, as well as the growing team.

Commenting on the appointments, Gary Williams, managing director at Widd Signs, said:

“Whilst we’re all navigating a changing business landscape, we’re committed to investing in talent and equipment to continue our place as a leading signage specialist.

“We’re continuing to deliver sizeable projects across the retail, construction, education, and leisure sectors, and we’ve made these eleven hires to further strengthen our team and ensure we’re best placed to meet the strong demand we’re seeing for our services.”

Returning installation team member Gavin Taylor commented:

“I left to try something new and have a new challenge, I always knew in my heart I would return to Widd Signs but had no idea just how much I would miss the Widd family until they weren’t around me anymore.”

The company, which was established in 1888 is now one of the UK’s leading signage businesses with clients including retail giants Marks & Spencer, Primark and schuh, culture, and leisure hubs such as the National Science and Media Museum and Burnley F.C.

Widd Signs plans to recruit further people to its installation teams, as well as adding more apprentices over the next six months.

87% Tradespeople Want More Women In The Industry, Survey Reveals

The find-a-tradesperson platform Rated People wants to make it easier for more people, regardless of gender, ethnicity or sexuality to get into the industry and thrive.

By highlighting the need for more inclusive language, Rated People hopes to break down stereotypes and encourage more people into trade careers.

To uncover how much binary noninclusive language, like ‘tradesmen’ is still being used and what affect it’s having, researchers at Rated People interviewed 3,000 UK residents, tradespeople and 16-18-year-old school leavers

The study reveals 80% of UK residents still use the term ‘tradesmen’ to refer to all people working within the industry, and gendered language is also still being used in career advice in school, which is having a negative effect on the number of young people considering a career in the industry.

Three quarters (73%) of 16-18-year-olds heard the term ‘tradesmen’ as a collective term for allpeople who work in trade professions in school career advice, and over 40% (42%) say they would be more likely to consider a career in the trades industry if more inclusive language was used

So, Rated People is now calling for UK schools to stop career advice from using gendered termslike ‘tradesmen’ as a collective term for everyone in trade professions in a bid to drive positive change within the industry.

Why it needs to change

According to the Chief Executive of The Federation of Master Builders, the industry is experiencing a serious skills shortage.

“We’ve been experiencing a severe shortage of bricklayers and carpenters for quite some time —[and] skills shortages are now seeping into other key trades such as roofers and plumbers. Indeed, of the 15 key trades and occupations, we monitor, 40% show skills shortages… Sourced from UK Construction Media

So, encouraging a broader range of young people into trade careers will be a key avenue toclose the skills gap. There’s huge support for a more diverse workforce among existing tradespeople – almost nine in 10 (87%) tradespeople think it would be good for more women to start working in the industry

Current career advice appears to be falling short though, as the study also discovered less than half (42%) of 16-18yearold girls were even given a trade career as a potential option at school. Whereas 65% of boys had trade careers communicated to them as viable career choices.

Added to that, just 4% of school-leavers opted for an apprenticeship last year (according to Government reports), so it’s obvious that much more can be done to promote trade careers to young people.

How Rated People is campaigning for change

By releasing this study, Rated People hopes UK schools will evaluate the quality of career advice and the effect that non-inclusive language is having on young people who are making further education and career choices.

The trades platform is also calling for change by recently making 16th September 2022 the first ‘National Tradespeople Day’ – renaming the antiquated ‘National Tradesmen Day’ to better reflect ALL the amazing people who work in the industry.

And in order to boost awareness about the issue, Rated People is launching a new nationwide TV campaign to further promote the diversity message. The newly launched TV advert shows ‘if you’ve got the skills, we’ve got the jobs’ to highlight the most important thing is how skilled you are, and nothing else.

To show this, the TV advert intentionally features tradespeople from a first-hand perspective, showing the work they’re doing, and not who they are, or what they look like. Rated People hopes the advert will show no one judges a skilled pair of hands for who they are, they just care they’re doing a good job, the 5-star kind of job.

Adrienne Minster, CEO of Rated People commented:

Many factors have contributed to the workforce shortages across the industry – from an aging workforce and reduced numbers of young people getting into trade professions, to Brexit and poor career advice.

With demand higher than ever, it’s critical that more is done to encourage young people into the industry. For an industry that offers great financial security and job fulfilment, more needs to be done to ensure young people see this as a welcoming environment where they can flourish – where everybody, regardless of gender, ethnicity, or sexuality, can thrive.

One of the biggest ways to break down stereotypes is to use more inclusive language and we hope our campaign for diversity will start to drive a positive change in the industry.

It’s also important to say that this is no way a slight to all the hardworking and incredible tradesmen within the industry – we salute you and all the amazing work you do. We acknowledge the historical workforce shortage in Britain right now and want more people to get into the industry. We hope that using more inclusive language will help to achieve that.

Energy Bill Relief Scheme – Sacha Lord, Night Time Economy Adviser for Greater Manchester

Reacting to the Government announcement today on the Energy Bill Relief Scheme, Sacha Lord, Night Time Economy Adviser for Greater Manchester said,

“I’m pleased that the economic importance of pubs and the hospitality sector is finally being recognised and that support is being pledged beyond this initial six month period. Businesses need to be able to plan ahead and forecast expenditure as a basic feeder of growth and investment and these plans may go some way to staving off the redundancies we have been expecting across the sector. ”

“However, only time will tell if the Government has gone far enough. Even with this help, businesses will still be paying more than they’re used to, and off the back of the pandemic, the real concern is whether they can afford to continue trading even with the support being offered.
“The hospitality sector is the fourth biggest employer in the UK, and its importance needs to be reflected in the support it is given. We are still pushing the Chancellor to offer wider support in his fiscal statement on Friday, including a reduction in VAT and business rates relief, both measures that will undoubtedly offer a lifeline to the sector.”

CONSULTATION UNDERWAY ON ALBERT BRIDGE HOUSE PROPOSALS

0

National regeneration specialist Oval Real Estate has launched a public consultation on its emerging plans to redevelop the Albert Bridge House site on Bridge Street and create a welcoming, sustainable new city centre destination.

The site is located between Bridge Street, the River Irwell, St Mary’s Parsonage and Trinity Bridge in Manchester city centre, and includes Albert Bridge House – the 18-storey office building currently occupied by HMRC – as well as the adjacent Bridge Street car park.

Manchester City Council listed the site as one of the most significant redevelopment opportunities within the St Mary’s Parsonage Strategic Regeneration Framework (SRF), which was endorsed in 2020. Located on key access routes between Deansgate, Spinningfields and Salford, the SRF identified the opportunity for a high density commercial-led development to rejuvenate this overlooked corner of the city centre and mark an important gateway into Manchester.

Although Oval places a strong emphasis on renovating and repurposing existing buildings, the plans for the Albert Bridge House site have always envisaged the replacement of the existing buildings on the site. Albert Bridge House was purpose-built in the 1950s as a tax office and, with HMRC vacating later this year, the building has come to the end of its logical lifespan.

The complete redevelopment of the site presents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to reimagine this key location, especially by opening up access to the riverside and creating high-quality new public realm.

Working with Studio Egret West, Oval has adopted a design approach which looks to sensitively position two new buildings within the site.

A new sustainable office building would provide c350,000 sq. ft. of high-quality and flexible workspace, designed to meet the needs of a range of occupiers. 19 storeys at its highest, the office building employs a radical stepped design, with a cascade of green terraces and rooftop spaces to create a truly unique façade.

A taller, landmark residential tower would be positioned at the southern end of the site. Providing 367 new Build-to-Rent homes, the hexagonally-designed building would step up from 34 to 45 storeys in height, and would help to meet the continued high demand for city centre living.

At the ground floor, there would be spaces for shops, cafés or restaurants, helping to attract footfall to this burgeoning part of the city centre and making the most of the reinvigorated riverside environment.

James Craig, Founding Partner of Oval Real Estate, said:

“We are delighted to have the opportunity to breathe new life into the Albert Bridge House site, which is bursting with potential due to its gateway location between Deansgate, Spinningfields and Salford.

“Our developments are always design-led, and we have been clear from the start about the level of ambition needed for such a prestigious site. We’re confident these architecturally leading new buildings will add something completely different to the Manchester skyline and create a welcoming and sustainable new destination for the city.”

“As a business, we specialise in bringing overlooked spaces back into the limelight and that is exactly what we aim to do here: our plans look to revitalise the site’s riverfront setting and create exceptional new public realm to be enjoyed by new and existing members of the community. As part of this consultation process, we’re excited to share our plans with the Manchester public and are looking forward to hearing their thoughts.”

The consultation will be open until Sunday 9 October. Further information about the proposals and how to have your say can be found on the consultation website at www.albertbridgehouse-mcr.com. As part of the consultation process, information will be presented at a public drop-in event at the Lowry Hotel on Tuesday 27 September(from 3pm to 7pm).

PACCAR Parts and Heliox partner to deliver DC chargers to EVs in EU and North America

0

Best, The Netherlands (21st September, 2022) – Heliox, a global leader in DC charging systems for medium- and heavy-duty vehicles, announces the cooperation with PACCAR Parts to support the roll-out of PACCAR’s electric vehicles in Europe (DAF) and North America (Kenworth and Peterbilt).

In Europe, PACCAR offers mobile 40 kW chargers and stationary 150 kW to 360 kW high-power chargers to PACCAR customers and dealers. The stationary high-power chargers are ideal for customers who want to charge their trucks quickly during lunch breaks, to maximize the usability of their Electric DAF. The same stationary high-power chargers can be used for overnight charging of up to three trucks simultaneously at a lower charge speed. The PACCAR Charger program will be showcased at IAA Transportation in Hannover this year, where the range of PACCAR chargers will be exhibited at the DAF stand.

In North-America, Heliox will supply mobile 40 kW and 50 kW chargers to PACCAR’s dealers and customers. The mobile chargers are lightweight, transportable, and often use existing infrastructure, which is a convenient option for organisations that are entering the EV market. Each charger is backed by a one-year warranty with an option to extend for up to two years.

According to Dick Leek, General Manager PACCAR Parts Europe: “The truck market is at a turning point in embracing the future of electric driving. Heliox will work closely with DAF to meet their customers’ charging needs, facilitating the transition of their fleet from diesel to electric transport.”

The electric truck market is expected to experience tremendous growth globally, creating a strong market for EV charger solutions in the coming years.

“This partnership has come at the perfect time as Heliox continues to expand its European operations for the e-truck market,” said Michael Colijn, CEO of Heliox. “We look forward to working with PACCAR by jointly supplying the PACCAR charging product offering, and helping their customers on their electrification journey by consistently offering great products, service and reliability.”

Ongoing interoperability testing with new medium- to heavy-duty vehicles ensure Heliox equipment is among the most consistent and reliable on the market. The chargers can be monitored and controlled using EV Service Provider software via cloud-based Open Charge Point Protocol (OCPP).

The cooperation between PACCAR and Heliox can be seen at the DAF stand at IAA where a PACCAR charger will be displayed and on-screen videos will be showing their application.

The mini-Budget: Truss’s chance to shine?

Adrian Young, a tax partner at accounting and business advisory firm HURST gives us his thoughts ahead of Friday’s mini-budget.

North west business leaders will be watching this Friday’s mini-Budget very closely. It will be the first chance for newly-minted prime minister Liz Truss and her new chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng to show how they intend to deliver on the tax-cutting pledges made in the leadership campaign.

There are two stand-out tax measures that I fully expect to be addressed.

The first is the reversal of the recent hike in national insurance contributions, the so-call Health and Social Care Levy. In the view of many, this was the wrong tax at the wrong time, and Truss set herself in direct opposition to its architect Rishi Sunak, in her leadership bid. So it’s hard to see her stepping back from this promise now. Businesses and families alike will welcome this move.

The second measure I think we will see confirmed on Friday is the cancellation of the proposed increase in corporation tax rate from 19 to 25 per cent in April 2023. This should help maintain the UK’s position as a competitive tax landscape for businesses and, again, local leaders will be relieved to see this increase scrapped.

These two changes alone will go some way towards reversing the tax burden from where it stands now – at the highest level in 70 years or so. But I would not be surprised if Truss and Kwarteng go further on Friday. Talk has been growing about bringing forward the one per cent reduction in the rate of income tax that was previously hinted at by Sunak.

This would be a significant move. Reducing income tax would be expensive in terms of tax revenues for the government, particularly at a time when the UK economy faces difficult times. However, Truss will certainly have one eye on the 2024 general election and so bringing forward a welcome and headline-grabbing income tax reduction could be politically expedient, and perhaps too tempting for her to ignore.

That said, whereas the reversal of the Health and Social Care Levy and the cancellation of the rise in corporation tax are likely to feature strongly on Friday, a reduction in income tax may have slightly longer odds of making an appearance. But there is another significant tax-reducing measure which may also feature. This is the potential drop in the headline rate of VAT from 20 per cent to something like 15 per cent. This would be a major boost to struggling families, not least because of its impact at the petrol pump.

Overall, Friday will be an opportunity for the new occupants of 10 and 11 Downing Street to mark a definitive break from the high tax regime of Johnson and Sunak. I think businesses and families alike will welcome this change. It is of course difficult to predict their macro-economic consequences, particularly the impact on people’s spending power, and therefore on inflation – which is already a concern. Longer term, it will be interesting to see how Truss and Kwarteng manage the competing objectives of reducing taxes while managing the wider economic fall-out.

North West businesses plead with PM for tax roadmap in emergency Budget

Ed Dwan, partner and head of North West at BDO LLP, said:

“North West businesses are looking towards Liz Truss and her new Government for a five-year plan for business taxes to allow them to invest in the future as we head into a tough winter and an anticipated recession. When asked what single tax change would help them the most, 28% of North West business leaders said the roadmap was key. Another 28% are calling for an overall simplification of the current tax system and three quarters of businesses in the region believe employment and payroll taxes are in the greatest need of reform.

“Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng has set a UK economic growth target of 2.5%, and while businesses in the North West have an ambition to grow, they are calling for targeted support to do so. According to BDO’s poll, 41% of companies in the North West stated that only the abolition of the rise in corporation tax from 2023 would give them enough confidence to invest for growth in the current backdrop. Another 22% said they would commit to capital investments if the super deduction continued.

“Right now, businesses in the region are being forced to take drastic action in response to spiralling costs and supply chain challenges, whether it’s reducing their physical footprint, cutting operating hours, or reassessing their headcount, and they are looking at the Government to back them up with decisive action, clarity and simplification.”
