This data reveals which places in the UK can’t get enough of social media, and what the most popular apps in each area are over the last year. Despite being one of the biggest social networks, Facebook didn’t appear as a top search for any area. Rather, apps such as TikTok, Instagram, and WhatsApp had the highest levels of interest on Google search.”

The study was conducted by NewCasinos, who specialise in helping people find and compare new casinos. They aim to review new casinos before all the competitors and place safety above all else.

The North West welcomes a brand new cell and gene therapy manufacturing facility at the forefront of innovation in Alderley Park

The location will provide rapid access to plasmid DNA – a vital starting point for therapeutic developers

It’s official: Charles River Laboratories International, Inc. (NYSE: CRL) has proudly opened the doors to their new site in Alderley Park, Cheshire. This purposefully-built High Quality (HQ) plasmid manufacturing facility will provide well-needed support to the development of potentially transformative cell and gene therapies (C&GTs).

Accelerated clinical development means an increased demand for C&GTs, and Charles River Laboratories seek to bridge this gap by providing a rapid supply of phase-appropriate plasmid DNA, a critical starting material, to therapeutic developers. Charles River offers three grades of plasmid DNA: research, HQ, and GMP, to transition seamlessly throughout your program development journey.

HQ plasmid is manufactured by Charles River to the principles of GMP, with the added benefit of an industry-leading 5+ week turnaround from initiation to release, reducing time to clinic.

Niall Dinwoodie, Executive Director, Gene Manufacturing Europe, Charles River: “The new 16,000 square foot facility expands our capabilities and will help fast-track the process of bringing therapies to market, address global supply shortages and support therapeutic developers through rapid access to material. As new gene therapies are launched around the world with the potential to change lives, our investment is a further vote of confidence in the future of this exciting and transformative industry here in the UK.”

UK C&GT Industry

The UK is a global leader in the C&GT space, with the largest cluster of therapeutic development companies outside the US. UK investment in ATMPs for human use totalled at £3.8bn, resulting in nine therapies reimbursed and reaching patients, and 38 therapies in Phase III of clinical development at the end of 2021. By 2035, the UK is expected to have a 15% share of C&GT global market activity, contributing £10bn in revenue and providing 18,000 jobs.

Matthew Durdy, CEO, Cell and Gene Therapy Catapult: “The funding and launch of the new Charles River facility represents a powerful and vital addition to the national manufacturing network and marks a huge step forward for the UK’s infrastructure needs. The rapid expansion of our manufacturing capabilities is fundamental both to meeting the growing global demand for ATMPs and developing the UK’s standing as a leading international hub for cell and gene therapy.

Overcoming key challenges to further open up local and international market opportunities remains crucial to the sector’s continued growth. Moreover, world class manufacturing technology and robust supply chain solutions become increasingly pivotal as the market evolves to target these life-changing therapies at high prevalence diseases. Capabilities such as those now established at Alderley Park are central to addressing these challenges and to ensuring that the UK continues to excel and be a global leader in cell and gene therapies.”

Cell and Gene Therapies

C&GTs utilise genetic material, or live cells, to treat or potentially cure a disease, and can allow for the creation of highly personalized therapies with approved products already on the market for indications such as multiple myeloma, retinal dystrophy, and Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products (ATMPs) are widely regarded as having the potential to change the way we manage difficult, life-changing conditions including various cancers and neurological diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s, also demonstrating their importance in the development of COVID-19 vaccines.

Unite Students completes £65million refurbishment of three properties in Manchester

0
  • Refurbishment of three properties in Manchester – Parkway Gate, Kincardine Court and New Medlock House – was completed in time for start of 2022/23 academic year
  • £65 million project saw the addition of 137 new bedrooms, and improved sustainability throughout, including installation of air source heat pumps

Unite Students, the UK’s leading manager and developer of student accommodation, has completed the £65million upgrade of three properties in Manchester.

The three buildings – Parkway Gate, New Medlock House and Kincardine Court – all reached practical completion in time for the arrival of students at the start of the 2022/23 academic year and are now fully occupied.

Parkway Gate

Parkway Gate was the first of the properties to be completed, with 754 bedrooms being refurbished, including the creation of 24 new bedrooms.

The £38million project includes full keyless functionality along with the installation of a new CCTV system.

Students also have a new reception space and a host of new amenities including a gym, cinema room, yoga room, karaoke room, games room and various study spaces. The courtyard space, which sits in the middle of the three blocks, has also undergone a complete makeover with new furniture, planting and audio system.

New Medlock House

New Medlock House, which is located next to Parkway Gate on Chester Street, underwent a £11.2million refurbishment, adding 21 new bedrooms to now house 696 students.

Sustainability has been at the heart of all the refurbishments, with the installation of air source heat pumps on the roof of New Medlock House and a new supply pipework to feed all mains hot water to the flats.

There was previously a retail space under the building, which has been transformed to create a spacious new reception and amenity space including a live music room, dance studio and post room to store parcel deliveries.

Kincardine Court

At Kincardine Court, on Kincardine Road, there was a focus on creating flats for post-graduates.

The property saw a £12.1million 92-bed new build extension, as well as a £3.28million refurbishment of the existing property over 16 weeks. All existing flats were upgraded to make them more suitable for post-graduates, including the revamp of ensuite bathrooms, and study areas as well as the installation of a new heating system. The kitchens were all fully replaced and now include a dishwasher.

The reception area was also remodelled, and common space was redesigned to give a spacious study area, with breakout rooms.

Tom Brewerton, Group Development Director, said:

“This refurbishment project in Manchester demonstrates our commitment to constantly improving the student experience, not only with the building of new properties but also by upgrading our existing portfolio.

“Sustainability has been at the heart of the work we have carried out to ensure a home for success for the future. Our residents’ wellbeing is our priority, which is why these improvements were required. Students and staff alike will now reap the benefits of these fantastic new spaces, built to the highest specs.”

‘Tesco Ted’ raises money for Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital Charity

0

Manchester Tesco stores will welcome a new furry face this autumn as teddy bear ‘Tesco Ted’ makes his way around the region to raise money for Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital Charity.

As Tesco Ted makes his way around some iconic Manchester locations on his way home, each store he visits will run tombolas, raffles, stationary bike races and more to help raise some much needed funds.

Funds raised will help provide vital care and equipment to children at the hospital. For example, £50 could provide an evening of TV time for patients in isolation while undergoing treatment, while £50,000 could fund an X-ray machine that scans images during surgery.

Jo Thomas, Relationship Officer for Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital Charity, said: ‘Having such fantastic support from all the Tesco team has been amazing. Ted has been a superstar and it’s always fun logging on each morning to see what adventures he has been on.

‘We can’t wait to welcome Ted at the end of his journey and to introduce him to our own bear Humphrey.

‘I want to thank Tesco on behalf of everyone at the Hospital and Charity – Tesco’s support really will make an incredible difference to our young patients.’

Customers who’d like the chance to spot Tesco Ted should keep an eye out at the 21 participating stores across Manchester, which include Tesco Greenfield, Oldham Chadderton Way, Oldham Huddersfield Road, Middleton, Blackley, Failsworth, Cheetham Hill, Prestwich, Walkden, Farnworth, Salford, Stretford, Irlam, Sale, Altrincham, Baguley, Didsbury, Burnage, Levenshulme, Stockport, Gorton, Droylsden, Stalybridge, Hattersley and Glossop.

Kai Myers, store manager at Tesco Superstore Greenfield, said: ‘At Tesco we love working within our local communities, and after a tough couple of years for everyone we wanted to raise some much-needed funds and have some fun along the way.

‘As Tesco Ted makes the journey home, we hope everyone enjoys seeing what he gets up to and raises awareness of the charity too.

‘Choosing the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital Charity was an easy decision to make, as many of our customers will know and be familiar with the charity and all the hard work it does.’

100 young British entrepreneurs make inaugural Hurun UK Under 30s 2022

0

The Hurun Research Institute reveals outstanding young entrepreneurs shaping the future of the UK economy

  • North West is home to 5 of the entrepreneurs, 3 of which are from Manchester
  • Pets Purest’s Evie and Oliver Bristowe, from Wilmslow, among the best of Britain’s under-30 entrepreneurs
  • UK has ‘one of the best start-up ecosystems in the world’
  • Fashion ‘steals the show’ with the highest proportion of represented entrepreneurs, including Manchester-based Reece Wabara, who set up Maniere De Voir
  • Hurun UK Under 30s marks first time top 100 British entrepreneurs under the age of 30 have been identified

The Hurun Research Institute this week released the Hurun UK Under 30s 2022, a list of the 100 leading young entrepreneurs aged 30 or under in the UK. The North West is home to 5 of the entrepreneurs, 3 of which are from Manchester.

The inaugural UK list includes high-profile business founders as well as less well-known entrepreneurs already generating annual sales of more than £1m or raising substantial investment. These include Evie and Oliver Bristowe, the Wilmslow-based pair behind the animal products brand Pets Purest, who have grown annual sales to £6.3m.

The fashion sector has the highest proportion of represented entrepreneurs in the UK Under 30s, followed by the food and drink sector. A notable fashion entrepreneur is former England U20 and Manchester City player, Reece Wabara, who set up an online fashion retailer which has grown in sales to £23.4 million in 2020. He retired from football to devote more time to the growth of Maniere De Voir.

Other Manchester-based entrepreneurs include Sam Coley and Stephen Pearce, who founded TickX, a price comparison site for music gig tickets which has now evolved into a software development outfit for the events and travel industries. The pair have secured millions of pounds of investments from backers including the Ministry of Sound.

29 women make the list. There is also a strong showing for young business leaders from ethnic minority backgrounds, reflecting Britain’s increasingly diverse entrepreneurial ecosystem.

The average age of the 100 entrepreneurs featured is 28 years and six months. Edward Beccle, the co-founder of the religious app Glorify, who is also based in London, is the youngest at just 23 years old.

Rupert Hoogewerf, Hurun Report Chairman and Chief Researcher, said: “The Hurun UK Under 30s is a celebration of the most successful young entrepreneurs in the country, the most likely to build the homegrown billion-dollar businesses of the future. I hope the Hurun UK Under 30s can inspire the next generation of ambitious entrepreneurs.

“The Hurun UK Under 30s have built businesses worth an average of £100mn, remarkable for such young entrepreneurs. Although this is distorted by the likes of Hopin, Gymshark and Marshmallow, there are probably a dozen or more with valuations of over £100mn. If they can build a business this big by the age of 30, imagine how big they could get when they get to the age of Jeff Bezos, James Dyson or Warren Buffett. You can safely say they are the most likely billionaires of the future, especially as founder teams and investors are becoming more experienced at knowing how to focus on value creation over sales.”

Oxford University’s alumni produced the most Hurun UK Under 30s, followed by the universities of Bath and Warwick. World-class universities are of critical importance to a successful start-up ecosystem.

The UK has one of the best start-up ecosystems in the world, coming in fourth after the US, China and India, with 46 known unicorns (billion-dollar start-ups from the 2000s not yet publicly traded) and 30 gazelles (US$500mn dollar start-ups from the 2000s, not yet publicly traded and most likely to ‘go unicorn’ within three years).

Rupert Hoogewerf continued, “A successful start-up ecosystem requires role models, both individuals, such as those from the Hurun Rich Lists, and companies, such as those from the Hurun 500 most valuable companies series. If a city or country can attract the world’s most successful entrepreneurs and companies to set up shop there, that will have a roll-on effect. Entrepreneurship is infectious and cities with lots of role models are likely to attract the brightest and best young entrepreneurs. It becomes a self-fulfilling prophesy.

“The role of investors is evolving to mentorship and scale-up opportunities, rather than just providers of cash. The world’s leading venture capitalists are building ecosystems with their portfolios, hugely attractive to the world’s fastest-growing start-ups. Being able to say you have one of the top venture capitalist brands as an investor adds significant credibility to a start-up.

“Hurun Report is committed to promoting entrepreneurship through its lists and research. For every successful start-up you see, there are thousands of failed companies, as well as a new generation of future unicorns coming through.  I hope this list of the UK’s most successful Under 30s can help young entrepreneurs find role models for their businesses.”

Other notable entrepreneurs from outside the North West include brothers Reiss and Kristian Edgerton, who set up fast-growing women’s gymwear brand AYBL. With girlfriend Alice Cross, Reiss set up Because of Alice. Notably, the Edgerton brothers were at school with Gymshark founders Ben Francis and Lewis Morgan, making South Bromsgrove High School in Worcestershire the school with the highest number of alumni on the Hurun UK Under 30s.

Grace Beverley established gym clothing brand TALA, which has generated sales of more than £10 million since its launch in 2019.

Natalie Glaze and Zanna van Dyke together set up Stay Wild Swim, making swimwear from recycled plastic.

Alexander and Oliver Kent-Braham are the first black British brothers to set up a unicorn, fintech Marshmallow.

Harry Stebbings made his name with his “Twenty Minute VC” podcast, before becoming a tech investor in his own right. The university dropout has raised more than £100 million to back UK start-ups.

Husband and wife team Dan and Melanie Marsden of lingerie retailer Lounge Underwear have shown the enormous potential of social media, as they have grown sales to £55 million last year.

Stephen Bartlett became the youngest entrepreneur panelist on the BBC’s Dragons’ Den. At the age of 22 he launched Social Chain with Dominic McGregor, growing revenues to around £150 million before merging the digital media business with a German firm. Bartlett has now launched his private equity operation, Catena Capital.

Thirteen of the business leaders are operating in the fashion industry, with 11 in food and drink, nine in healthcare and eight in marketing.

60 of the young entrepreneurs’ businesses are based in London, with Manchester, Solihull, Leeds and Redditch amongst the regional hotspots.

Four pairs of siblings appear – the Edgerton brothers, the Kerr sisters, the Kent-Braham brothers and the Holmes-Darby brothers.

The 100 Hurun UK Under 30s are part of a family of over 1000 Under 30s from 10 countries, the others being China, India, US, Canada, Germany, Spain, South Korea, UAE and Australia.

50th Specialist Joins Bicester Heritage as the Site Reaches Full Occupancy

0
  • Bicester Heritage, founded in 2013 as the home of historic motoring enterprise in the UK, is now at full occupancy. It’s one part of the overall Bicester Motion site
  • 50 Specialists are now housed on the former RAF Technical Site in sympathetically restored buildings or entirely new developments
  • First tenants included classic car specialists like Pendine Historic Cars and Classic Performance Engineering, but the site now welcomes global brands like Morgan Motor Company and Singer Vehicle Design
  • Last four tenants signal the next stage in Bicester Motion’s vision: to become an ecosystem for the past, present and future of mobility, technology, culture and community
  • Bicester Heritage has welcomed Polestar, NEOM McLaren Formula E, Zapp Electric Vehicles and Zero Petroleum in recent months
  • Development now begins on Bicester Innovation, due for completion Q1 2026
  • In the next 5-7 years, Bicester Motion’s four quarters will be complete: Heritage, Innovation, Experience and Wilderness.

Bicester Heritage has now welcomed its 50th Specialist business to its site. A part of the overall Bicester Motion development, this area of the former RAF Technical Site is now fully occupied, expanding a thriving ecosystem of classic car, automotive and mobility-themed specialists.

The last four tenants could hardly be more different to the first, with Polestar, NEOM McLaren Formula E, Zapp Electric Vehicles and Zero Petroleum joining a line-up of businesses that includes vintage Bentley specialist Kingsbury Racing Shop, classic Porsche experts Sports Purpose and the Vintage Car Radiator Company. But Bicester Heritage itself has become a microcosm of the overall Bicester Motion vision: a hub for the past, present and future of mobility.

Founded in 2013 as a response to a changing historic motoring industry, Bicester Heritage is now considered to be the home of historic motoring enterprise in the UK, a sector worth £18.8bn per annum, The Bicester Aerodrome Company, launched in 2020, also sits within this area, following its launch in 2020, promoting aviation activity from the historic grass airfield.

Bicester Heritage is held as an exemplar of constructive conservation by Historic England, crucially maintaining the look and feel of the nation’s best-preserved World War 2 RAF Bomber Station. In summer 2020, Bicester Motion Heritage completed construction and delivery of ‘The Command Works’ – the first significant new-build construction in 80 years at the location.

With ‘The Command Works’ complete and all historic buildings on-site reinvigorated, Bicester Heritage’s vision of hosting 50 Specialists could be fulfilled. And just two years after the completion of The Command Works that vision has come to fruition.

The ‘marina’-like feel of Bicester Heritage created many new business opportunities for companies that chose to base themselves there; a customer of Vintage Car Radiator Company may equally be interested in pre-war Bentleys or classic Porsches, for example. And as these branching connections have grown, more and more businesses from diverse areas of mobility have realized the benefits: Morgan Motor Company and Singer Vehicle Design – both major global automotive brands – now each have a base at Bicester Heritage, as does the governing body of all four-wheel motor racing in the UK: Motorsport UK.

The site itself has become a visitor attraction, with regular ‘Scramble’ events opening up the time-warp base to 7,000 attendees each time for an insight into the skilled work that the on-site businesses do. Around 100,000 people visit Bicester Heritage each year. And, the latest four new tenants have each seen the benefit of being based at a ‘destination’ venue already with a large footfall of visitors.

EV-only car brand Polestar has established its UK commercial head office at Bicester Heritage, as has NEOM McLaren Formula E, an electric motorsport contender. The creators of electric motorbike scooters, Zapp EV, also join the former RAF base, alongside Zero Petroleum, who create fossil-free fuels for use in all forms of transport, including aeroplanes – a futuristic link to the site’s aviation past.

The overall Bicester Motion site, of which Bicester Heritage forms just one part, will look to build on this successful symbiotic community feel to create a hub for the past, present and future of mobility. The new Bicester Innovation development is shortly due to break ground, bringing a new knowledge economy area to the site, offering 230,000sq/ft and on-site test tracks and airfield to accommodate market-disrupting businesses in the mobility space. The mobility industry is at a tipping point, with an estimated £3.7bn investment per year into automotive and mobility solutions, and a predicted £62bn in economic growth from connected and autonomous vehicles by 2030. The battery market alone in the UK is expected to be worth £9bn by 2040.

In the future, visitors to Bicester Motion will also be able to enjoy the forthcoming Bicester Experience and Wilderness quarters. Bicester Motion plans to become a top 20 UK visitor attraction.

Daniel Geoghegan, the Chief Executive of Bicester Motion, said: “From the very beginning, our vision for Bicester Heritage has been to create a vibrant hub for 50 Specialists to safeguard crucial heritage skills and boost both the local and national economies. We’re delighted to see our vision believed in so enthusiastically by such a diverse range of businesses of all sizes on-site, which gives us great confidence in the forthcoming stages of our Bicester Motion masterplan. Future-facing businesses already believe in what we’ve created at Bicester Heritage, but with our forthcoming Innovation Quarter, now we’re developing an area built especially for their needs.”

Development of Bicester Innovation is expected to begin in 2023, with the buildings open for occupation early 2026.
