Poor ventilation in homes causing worrying health implications for Manchester residents

People across Manchester are suffering from headaches, chest infections, shortness of breath and mental health issues as a direct result of the quality of their home, new research reveals.

In the last 12 months, 60% of homeowners in the area have experienced problems in their home relating to poor indoor air quality or ventilation, including condensation (30%), mould in at least one room (18%), leaks (17%) and damaged walls (13%). Of these, half (50%) said they’ve experienced a mixture of physical and mental side effects, from allergies, dry eyes and chest infections to poor sleep, low mood and difficulty concentrating.

Sharing the ways in which they try to resolve or avoid the health problems being caused by their home, as well as opening their windows, cleaning frequently and using dehumidifiers, 19% of people have had to visit a doctor or take medication, and 14% said they actively spend time away from their property.

The findings come from Jewson, which undertook research with more than 2,031 homeowners across the UK to ask them how their homes affected their health, comfort and wellbeing, and the home improvements they’re planning over the next 12 months. The statistics have been revealed to coincide with the launch of the Making Better Homes Awards, in which Jewson will recognise tradespeople, builders and installers across the country who’re playing a key role in making the UK’s housing stock higher quality, more comfortable, and more energy efficient.

Matthew Handley, Category Innovation Manager at Jewson, said: “There’s been an increased awareness on the dangers of mould, condensation and other issues relating to poor indoor air quality in the last 12 months due to shocking news stories that show why ventilation is such an important part of our homes. Ventilation is vital to achieve good air quality and reduce the risks associated with moisture, gas, dust and pollutants – and not having this solution in place is causing major implications for lots of people in Manchester, as our research has found.

“While this is a serious issue that needs to be explored further, we know there are a wealth of tradespeople in Manchester who are working closely with their customers to ensure they’re not at any risk of these health issues. We’re using the Making Better Homes Awards to recognise the people who want to improve the day to day lives of their customers and create properties that are sustainable and that can stand the test of time, ensuring they’re being celebrated in the way they deserve.”

The Making Better Homes Awards is open for entries now, and people can make submissions here.

National living wage to rise to £11 an hour, Jeremy Hunt to confirm

Chancellor Jeremy Hunt is expected to announce an increase in the national living wage to a minimum of £11 per hour from next April.

The move will benefit around two million of the lowest-paid workers. This announcement will be made during his speech at the Conservative Party conference in Manchester.

In addition to the wage increase, Hunt plans to enhance sanctions for individuals on benefits who do not actively seek employment. This move comes amidst calls from some within the Conservative Party to reduce taxes.

Currently set at £10.42 per hour, the national living wage serves as the legally mandated minimum wage for workers aged 23 and above, with lower rates for younger employees.

The rates are determined annually by the government based on recommendations from an independent advisory group known as the Low Pay Commission. These recommendations are typically accepted by the government.

The government had already set a target for the national living wage to reach two-thirds of the median hourly pay by October of the following year.

While the Low Pay Commission has yet to confirm its recommendations for the upcoming year, it estimates that the rate necessary to meet this government target should fall between £10.90 and £11.43 per hour. Jeremy Hunt is expected to affirm that, regardless of the recommendation, the rate will rise to at least £11 per hour, resulting in an annual increase of £1,000 for full-time workers on the national living wage.

‘Boosting pay and cutting tax’

Jeremy Hunt is anticipated to emphasise the positive impact of the national living wage, stating, “Since we introduced [the national living wage], nearly two million people have been lifted from absolute poverty. That’s the Conservative way of improving the lives of working people: boosting pay and cutting tax.”

Furthermore, the chancellor is set to announce a reevaluation of the benefits sanctions system to encourage individuals to rejoin the workforce.

He will express concern about the direction of the labor market since the pandemic, noting that while companies struggle to find workers, around 100,000 individuals are leaving the labor force annually to rely on benefits.

Hunt will emphasise the need for fairness in this matter, stating, “Those who won’t even look for work do not deserve the same benefits as people trying hard to do the right thing.” Detailed plans for these benefit changes are expected to be revealed during the Autumn Statement in November.

Opportunities for remote work

Work and Pensions secretary Mel Stride reported that the government is already reviewing the Work Capability Assessment to ensure it aligns with modern work patterns, including increased opportunities for remote work. This assessment determines the extent to which an individual’s illness or disability affects their ability to work, and if someone is deemed fit for work, their benefits may be affected.

Reintroducing people into the workforce remains a pivotal aspect of the government’s economic growth strategy, as emphasised in the chancellor’s Budget speech in March.

Recent statistics have shown a rising number of individuals unable to work due to long-term illnesses, with approximately 2.5 million individuals absent from the labour market due to medical conditions.

Digital support for North West manufacturers set to deliver £100 million GVA boost benefit for region

0

Evaluations of digital transformation initiatives, Cheshire & Warrington 4.0 (CW4.0) and LCR 4.0 Holistic, have discovered that the projects supporting SME manufacturers will collectively contribute an additional £100m of gross value added (GVA) and 489 full-time jobs to the region’s economy.

Over the last two years, the ERDF (European Regional Development Fund) initiatives, led by the University of Liverpool’s Virtual Engineering Centre (VEC), have assisted 308 SMEs and start-ups throughout the North West.

SMEs working with the programmes have already created 150 full-time jobs, 90 of which are in Cheshire and Warrington’s advanced manufacturing sector.

The projects have helped SME manufacturers and supply chain businesses to integrate new digital technologies into their operations. These include developing sophisticated customer service tools, gaining real-time insights into processes through data analytics, and employing visualisation tools for improved decision-making and product development. Knowledge Transfer workshops and access to world-class facilities and expertise have enabled regional businesses to develop business strategies, optimise operations, and even upskill teams for further development.

Over half of Cheshire and Warrington’s SMEs surveyed reported an increase in productivity, while 60% reported an expansion in business growth. The LCR 4.0 Holistic initiative has resulted in a 30% diversification rate into new markets for participating SMEs, offering additional opportunities and financial gains.

Andrew Borland, Chief Innovation Officer at the Virtual Engineering Centre, said: “North West manufacturers are primed and uniquely positioned to respond to global challenges. From renewable energy and transportation to pharmaceuticals and the chemicals sector.

“SME manufacturers we have been lucky enough to work with have proven that cutting edge R&D in AI, robotics and the sciences from our universities can be harnessed locally to deliver new products, processes, and services.

“Putting the challenges of COVID-19 and Brexit behind them this proactive approach highlights the sector’s commitment to innovation, creating competitive products that deliver both environmental sustainability and robust economic growth.”

Dr Andrew Levers, Executive Director for the Institution for Digital Engineering and Autonomous Systems (IDEAS), University of Liverpool and Principal Investigator for LCR4.0 and CW4.0, added: “These impressive figures are a real testament to the success of CW4.0 and LCR 4.0 Holistic. Its success would not have been possible without each of the partners and supporting Growth Hubs, each determined to help SMEs in the region become more efficient, sustainable, and successful as we aim to become an epicentre for business support within the region and beyond.

“The improved understanding and confidence levels of such organisations has resulted in over 130 new products crossing the development line, with 83 additional new products being launched to market, strengthening the regional offering. We hope to see continued innovations throughout the regions in the future and are looking to continue in our collaborations and support through additional initiatives and projects.”

CW4.0 was delivered by the VEC, University of Liverpool, Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), Liverpool John Moore’s University (LJMU), and the Northern Automotive Alliance. LCR 4.0 Holistic was delivered by VEC, University of Liverpool’s Management School, LJMU, STFC and Liverpool City Region Growth Platform.

The gastronomic tour continues to China, where Stanislav delves into Century Eggs, also known as preserved eggs. Despite their off-putting greenish-black appearance, Kondrashov reveals that these eggs offer a medley of complex flavors, including creamy, custard-like whites and rich yolks.

In Australia, Kondrashov directs our attention to Witchetty Grub, large white larvae that serve as a staple food in the desert for indigenous Australians. When roasted, these larvae impart a flavor reminiscent of a blend of chicken and almonds, providing a unique culinary experience.

From there, readers are transported to Sweden to explore Surströmming, a fermented Baltic Sea herring renowned for its potent aroma. Kondrashov mentions that this dish is traditionally savored outdoors to mitigate its overpowering scent.

The narrative then takes us to Sardinia, where Stanislav discusses Casu Marzu, a unique sheep milk cheese containing live insect larvae intended to enhance its fermentation and flavor.

Readers are further whisked away to Indonesia to discover Kopi Luwak, renowned as the world’s most expensive coffee. Kondrashov explains that the coffee’s steep price tag is attributed to a unique process involving the Asian palm civet.

South Korea offers Sannakji, a dish consisting of small live octopuses. Stanislav describes this dish as providing a fresh, sea-salty taste that offers a truly unique culinary experience.

Kondrashov introduces Balut from the Philippines, a dish crafted from a developing bird embryo. According to Stanislav, Balut is a harmonious blend of various textures and flavors, offering creamy yolk, distinct broth, and tender meat.

This year’s winners include individuals who have gone on to forge lives very different from the one in which they came. These awards celebrate the remarkable feats of those who have triumphed, despite the disadvantages posed by race, gender or social background, to demonstrate what is possible. Guardiola rues Rodri absence for Wolves clash

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola says it’s “not easy” to replace key midfielder Rodri ahead of their trip to Wolves on Saturday.

The Spain international was sent off in last weekend’s win over Nottingham Forest and will be suspended when the league leaders head to Molineux.

Kalvin Phillips deputised in the midweek defeat at Newcastle in the EFL Cup and Guardiola admitted Rodri’s absence was a difficult one to overcome.

He said: “It is not easy [without him].

“Just for the amount of minutes he plays, it’s not easy. He’s out, [so] we find another quality; the skills he has we use for the benefit of the team.”

Wolves have won just one of their opening six games, but Guardiola believes they deserve more points for their endeavours.

“[I have] Incredible respect for Wolves, the quality they have,” he added.

“The guys up front, the manager did incredible at Bournemouth. Against Brighton, the chances they miss; against Liverpool, they have chances.

“The quality is there; hopefully, we can respond.”

City will be looking to extend their 100 per cent start, having won each of their opening six matches.

Their record is not so dominant without Rodri, however. Since the start of the 2019-20 campaign, City have lost four of the 14 Premier League games the Spaniard has missed, winning nine and drawing one.

The former Atletico Madrid man also leads the charts for completed passes in the division this season with 616.

Huge housing plan in Greater Manchester agreed for by the council

A new council plan has been agreed this month by council bosses to build 165,000 homes across Greater Manchester which will take place over 15 years.

The modifications were approved by the Wigan Council, which is part of a larger plan called Places For Everyone, designed to maximise affordable living and accommodation, as concluded following an 8-month examination by government inspectors in the area. The modifications and work is expected to start as early as October this year.

The primary adjustments to the proposal encompass alterations to housing development boundaries and the exclusion of the North of Irlam Station location, which will inevitably lead to a reduction in the surrounding green belt land.

The Salford-based site initially intended to accommodate approximately 800 residences was ultimately deemed too disadvantageous to greenfield areas.

In a focused effort to safeguard green belt land, the boundaries of the Timperley Wedge, initially prepared for 1,700 homes, and Elton Reservoir, designated for 3,500 homes, were modified accordingly.

Several other developments underwent boundary modifications without a change in their scale. These include Simister and Bowlee (1,250 homes), Broadbent Moss (1,450 homes and employment space), South of Rosary Road (60 homes), Land at Hazelhurst Farm (450 homes), South of Hyde (440 homes).

Additional revisions to the plan were of a non-substantive nature, aimed at enhancing the clarity and consistency of policy language throughout the proposal.

The developments follow an intense 8-month investigation carried out by the council and issues identified with the land and surrounding area. Amidst a housing crisis, the development of 165,000 homes will be welcomed by locals and young families and highlights the increased confidence amongst landlords and investors.

Approval of these amendments now rests with the remaining seven councils within Greater Manchester before consultation can commence. Stockport, however, stands as the lone borough excluded from the Places for Everyone plan, having withdrawn due to concerns regarding its impact on the green belt.

Notably, there were no physical alterations made to the plan for the Wigan sites, as highlighted during the meeting on September 28. These sites earmarked for development encompass the logistics park at M6 Junction 25, featuring 1,050 homes North of Mosley Common, 600 homes and 15,000 sqm of employment space at Pocket Nook, and 500 homes at Gibfield West.

Energy Startup Warmable Launches in Greater Manchester Area

Greater Manchester residents are in for a heating revolution as Warmable, the innovative boiler comparison and service platform, extends its reach to this bustling metropolitan region.

Warmable’s arrival is set to transform the way residents address their heating needs, offering seamless access to local boiler engineers for repairs, annual servicing, and even new installations. Plus, customers can compare boilers from all leading brands in the UK, with next day delivery and installation.

Founder Daniel Tannenbaum said ahead of Warmable’s launch, “We are thrilled to be expanding in Manchester and are committed to creating a greener, more sustainable city. This means that we now have more than 1,000 Gas Safe Registered Engineers on our records to help across the UK. “

“Warmable’s services not only make heating solutions more accessible but also align with the broader goals of reducing carbon emissions and promoting energy efficiency.”

“Greater Manchester faces the same heating challenges as any other urban center in the UK. Reliable heating is crucial in this region, where winters can be chilly. If your radiator or boilers are not working, this could prove a very difficult position for the vulnerable or the elderly and being able to get swift attention is of paramount importance.”

About the company

One of Warmable’s standout features is its ability to swiftly connect residents with local boiler engineers in Greater Manchester, including Bolton, Stockport, Salford and Wigan, a valuable asset during the colder months. In cases of boiler breakdowns, timing is everything.

With the startup, users can submit repair requests in minutes and a member of the dedicated team will work to find a local boiler specialist who will make an on-site visit at a convenient time. A free quote will be offered to diagnose and fix the issue, ensuring homes stay cozy throughout the year.

Regular boiler maintenance is essential for safety and efficiency. Warmable streamlines the process of scheduling an annual service. Users can set service reminders and, with just a few clicks, book an appointment with a trusted local engineer. This proactive approach not only ensures safety but also aids in energy efficiency, reducing heating bills and carbon footprints.

“We are in an energy crisis,” explains Tannenbaum. “Gas and electricity prices have risen 1.7% and 6.7% year-on-year since last August and this is faster than wages. It has therefore arguably never been more important to really understand the cost of your boiler, its running costs and how to keep it more efficient, something that is so second nature that we often take it for granted.”

“With a huge range of boilers available that people can compare on Warmable, they are getting fixed prices with no obligation to proceed, so there is no need to settle and you can do as much or as little research as you want.”

“We are soon to be launching air source heat pumps, something that is more cost-effective and energy efficient and will be key to helping the UK achieve carbon neutrality.”
