PROTECT BRAND TO AVOID RISING CLAIMS SAYS B-COMPLIANT

Financial compliance specialists, B-Compliant, are urging advisory firms to consider trademarking their name to prevent targeted attacks by claims management companies (CMCs).

The Manchester-based consultants are warning firms that DB claims are becoming the focus of targeted advertising campaigns by CMCs, using company names to attract clients.

B-Compliant director, Vicky Pearce, said: “We are aware of one firm that has been the subject of a Google ad words campaign by a CMC, following an initial DB claim. By using the firm’s trading name to draw in further clients, a downward spiral begins that results in many more claims being issued against the target.”

Trademarking a company name allows a firm to protect its brand and prevent others benefiting from it or causing reputational damage. Google has a clear policy preventing advertisers from using trademarks without consent and will launch an investigation into any valid complaint.

Vicky added: “Trademarking is not the easiest process, but it is worth the time and effort to prevent targeted attacks of this nature. Once it is done, if you become aware of a CMC or other entity using your brand name on Google without permission, the search engine will be forced to remove the advert.”

B-Compliant serves the needs of small and medium-sized advisory firms, investment management companies and discretionary fund managers, providing advice and guidance to those who do not have the skills internally. Slater Heelis celebrates 250th anniversary with new HQ in Orbit Developments’ Crossgate House, Sale

Slater Heelis will be relocating its headquarters to Orbit Developments’ Crossgate House in Sale, consolidating the law firm’s two town centre offices into one location. The ten-year agreement between Orbit Developments and Slater Heelis is for the entire 11,688 square foot first floor of Crossgate House. After many years serving the local community, Slater Heelis is due to move into the property in spring 2023, marking its 250th anniversary.

Following a search for a new HQ, Crossgate House met the requirements: a single floor, grade A building; as well as fulfilling Slater Heelis’ desire to stay in the town centre. Crossgate House offers occupiers a fully air-conditioned, modern office space with an excellent car parking ratio and transportation links. The properties prominent location on the A56 and being only a four-minute walk from the Metro, means it’s easily accessible.

Sale is amidst a renaissance as it sees new occupiers expanding their portfolios, such as Simon Rimmer’s Greens restaurant and the popular, Manchester born Rudy’s pizza, adding to Sales local amenities. Furthermore the recent arrivals of the Foodhall and Sugo’s also provide very positive additions to the towns amenity offer.

Slater Heelis itself is involved in the redevelopment, with Managing Partner Chris Bishop sitting on the board of the Sale Regeneration Project, ‘Uniquely Sale’, which aims to attract independent businesses, provide more green spaces and create cycling and walking routes in the town.

This is further endorsed by fellow Crossgate House occupier Training Qualifications, expanding from Dunham House just last year. This followed a sustained period of growth for TQ of which Orbit as Landlord of both buildings were able to work with them to find the right building for their expansion.

Dean Richards, Leasing Director at Orbit Developments, comments: “We are delighted to have been able to provide Slater Heelis, which is such an established and respected business, with a property that fell in line with its workplace aspirations and will become its sole premises in Sale. It’s been a pleasure dealing with the staff at Slater Heelis and Edwards & Co who advised them.”

Chris Bishop, Managing Partner of Slater Heelis, says “Sale has been home to our head office for over 100 years and during that time we’ve established strong roots within the community, so it was important for us to find new office space within the town. Crossgate House is the perfect fit. It supports our environmental commitments, providing a more energy efficient space with plenty of bike storage and easy access to nearby public transport links.

“Slater Heelis is continuing to grow, and we know how important an attractive office environment is in recruiting and retaining staff. Our new HQ will enable us to make the most of our new hybrid way of working, facilitating greater collaboration when we’re all on-site and creating space for training and socialising. We’re looking forward to being in!” Slater Heelis was advised by Nigel Hunter, Senior Director at Edwards & Co, while Orbit Developments were represented by James Dickinson at Canning O’Neil.

Crowd Network launches new Crowd Sports division together with Geraint Thomas, George Groves and Beef Johnston

0

Crowd Network, one of the UK’s fastest growing audio-on-demand companies, has launched its latest division with a dedicated channel on the Apple podcast app.

Crowd Sports brings together the talents of Tour de France champion and double Olympic gold medallist Geraint Thomas (The Geraint Thomas Cycling Club); former world boxing champion George Groves (The George Groves Boxing Club) and Tour-winning golfing folk-hero Andrew ‘Beef’ Johnston (Beef’s Golf Club), with more big-name launches to follow in early 2023.

Crowd already makes the hugely successful Joe Marler Show with England rugby star Joe, which has gone past six million downloads since launching in September 2020 and recently announced a major nationwide tour after a sell-out live show at the Clapham Grand in London.

Crowd Sports establishes Crowd as the leading podcast maker in the sports industry, combining big-name stars with timeless formats and a proven track record for both growing its shows’ community of listeners and monetising all aspects of each project.

Crowd Sports works in partnerships with its stars, giving them shared ownership of a brand that can become a central component in their commercial success both during their sporting careers and afterwards. The success of the Geraint Thomas Cycling Club includes club cycling kit, off-bike wear and weekly group rides for listeners, with further merchandise launches and live shows planned.

Crowd Sports is led by Tom Fordyce, Creative Director at Crowd and former Chief Sports Writer at the BBC, and Rob Roberts-Facey, who joined Crowd as Head of Sport earlier this year. Rob was previously BBC Sport’s Creative Lead, while Tom launched and co-hosted That Peter Crouch Podcast.

The sports podcast market is growing rapidly in 2022. Spotify AB stats show a threefold growth in sports shows in the last 18 months, while Podtrac data shows a 124% year-on-year increase in downloads in 2022.

Geraint Thomas, co-host of The Geraint Thomas Cycling Club podcast, said: “To see Crowd Sports on the front page of the Apple podcast app is incredibly exciting, and testament to the hard work the team pours into its shows. I’ve been on the journey with Crowd from the start, and there’s no better team to build a sports show and the community around it. GTCC has already racked up two million downloads in our first two seasons, and with season three just launched that will just keep growing.”

Tom Fordyce, Creative Director at Crowd Network, said: “We love making sports pods, and we believe we’re leading the way in this competitive sector. It’s not just the sporting achievements of the sporting talent we work with, but how relatable they are to our listeners – and also what they want to do together. Crowd Sports means a Tour de France champion, world champion boxer and elite golfer are all part of the same team, creating shows and communities around them that are long-term projects and brands. We’re looking forward to announcing our next raft of shows and stars to Crowd Sports in the new year.”

Rob Roberts-Facey, Head of Sport at Crowd Network, added: “We’re seeing more and more that creators want ownership of their content, and I think that is a big part of why Crowd is such an attractive proposition to those in the industry. We focus on building shows that creators and fans can connect with, giving a proper say in the development of the show and the community that springs out of it. Ultimately, we are providing a platform that talent can develop their brands through, and reach new audiences. The launch of a dedicated sports division will enable us to push our work in the industry forward even further, and I’m excited for this next step on Crowd’s journey.”

Crowd Network has recently been shortlisted in the Network of the Year category at this year’s Audio Production Awards.

Crowd is home to popular original shows across its other divisions. Crowd People produces personality-led podcasts including The Sam and Billie Show which has had more than three million downloads and Go Love Yourself which is preparing for its first live theatre show in March 2023. Crowd Stories produces hit investigative podcasts including The Secret History Of Flight 149, Murder in House Two and American Vigilante, with all three reaching number one in Apple’s true crime chart.

Why is Now the Best Time to Start a Beauty Business?

The beauty and cosmetics industry has always been a relatively strong performer, but its performance has been particularly commendable in the aftermath of the coronavirus pandemic. According to recent statistical information, the number of beauty-centred businesses starting each year has grown by 700% since 2014. Now may well be the best time to get started with your own beauty business – but why?

Stability

Firstly, it is important to acknowledge the country’s current economic situation. The cost-of-living crisis, caused by the ever-inflating prices of goods and services across the country, has severely impacted the spending power of the average family.

This, coupled with the pound’s poor performance internationally (with its own inflationary impacts on the cost of importing), has made recession all but certain – itself making for a particularly concerning environment in which to build a business.

However, the beauty industry is one of few that remain resilient in the face of economic crisis, even where consumer spending could be impacted. Building a strong base of regular customers is enough to ensure your business survives the worst of the recession with relative ease.

Lifestyle and Choice

On a personal level, starting your own business in the beauty industry can be revolutionary for work-life balance and overall life trajectory. Running your own enterprise allows you to shape your working week to suit your wants and needs. If you’d prefer to work evenings, specific days or even on a remote basis, these are all possible with the right investments.

There is also the complete freedom you have over the nature of your work, from the décor of your establishment to the equipment you invest in for your clients. You get to choose what your pedicure chairs look like, or whether you include a mural by your masseuse table. Profit can be a motive in making these decisions, but comfort can also be a leading factor.

Variety

Starting your salon or treatment service is only one step in a longer-term career, which could see you branching out and adding new strings to your bow. As your business grows, so too does your ability to take on extra staff with their own specialisms and skills.

This can be used to your advantage, as new treatments and procedures can be added to your listings with each new hire and training programme – further increasing the overall profitability of your business, and effectively futureproofing you in the process.

A Bright – and Innovative – Future

Speaking of the future, the future of beauty is bright and ever-changing. The proof has been plain to see in recent years, as salons widely adopted new non-surgical aesthetic treatments to great consumer response. New technological solutions are headed for the market in terms of both treatments and bookings logistics and starting your business now could put you in the first wave of early adopters.

Metro Mayors Andy Burnham and Steve Rotheram to face off in charity DJ battle for ‘A Bed Every Night’

0

The music of Manchester and Liverpool will go head-to-head in a one-off DJ battle to raise money for the Greater Manchester Mayor’s Charity.

Andy Burnham and Steve Rotheram will take to the decks for a fundraiser powered by The Warehouse Project on Friday 2 December 2022, battling it out alongside special guests in front a massive crowd. All proceeds from tickets and bar sales will go to the Greater Manchester Mayor’s Charity for A Bed Every Night, the flagship scheme which aims to provide a bed (and wraparound support) for anyone rough sleeping, or at risk of rough sleeping, in Greater Manchester.

It will be something of a re-match for the Mayors, who took part in an online DJ face-off during lockdown as part of the ‘United We Stream’ fundraiser. Now reuniting in front of a live crowd, they’ll each be eager to be crowned king of the turntables.

The event, being put on by the Greater Manchester Mayor’s Charity and powered by The Warehouse Project, will take over the Archive at Mayfield Depot (entrance via Temperance Street), with tickets on sale now, charged at £10 per person (plus fees) and only available here.

Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham will be fresh from a recent DJ spot at Manchester’s Ramona, and is promising a set influenced by Manchester classics. He said:

“We all know Manchester has the greatest musical heritage and I’ll be giving it my all in the set to prove that point once and for all. There’s serious pride at stake here. But competition aside, our passion for music unites our two city regions. What better way to put on an amazing celebration of our region’s culture and raise money for important causes, to support those who need it most at what is a really difficult time.”

But he’ll have stiff competition from Mayor of Liverpool City Region, Steve Rotheram, who’s often taunted his North West counterpart on which city has the best music credentials.

The battle – which will raise vital funds for the Greater Manchester Mayor’s Charity, to help end homelessness in Greater Manchester – is supported by The Warehouse Project, Elevate and Badger & Combes. A Bed Every Night was launched in 2018 by Andy Burnham, supported by the Charity, and provides emergency accommodation for anyone rough sleeping across the city-region, regardless of status, as well as vital personal support.

Tim Heatley, Chair of Greater Manchester Mayor’s Charity, said:

“We’ve been bowled over by the ongoing support for A Bed Every Night. The scheme has raised tens of thousands over the years and, ultimately, has made peoples’ lives better with the support its been able to fund. We’re back, bigger than ever, and can’t wait to see the mayors going head to head at the iconic Mayfield Depot. It’ll be a real celebration of what makes Manchester and Liverpool incredible, global cities. People will not only be getting a great party, but knowing they’re providing vital support at a time when it’s needed most.”

Since 2018, A Bed Every Night has helped over 4,000 people and been instrumental in reducing rough sleeping in the region by 75%, since its peak in 2017 (as of June 2022). The 2021 ‘1000 Beds for Christmas campaign saw an overwhelming response from the public, and raised over £34,000, funding 1139 nights of accommodation, along with wrap-around support. Due to the current cost of living and energy crisis, there’s an increased need to offer support this winter.

The Greater Manchester Mayor’s Charity is also concerned that many more people will end up at risk of homelessness due to ongoing turbulent economic conditions and uncertainty over Universal Credit. A Bed Every Night is already supporting over 600 people currently needing a place to stay.

Appeal for extra donations

Anyone purchasing a ticket for the DJ Battle will already be supporting the Greater Manchester Mayor’s Charity and A Bed Every Night, with all proceeds from ticket sales and bar sales helping to prevent homelessness in Greater Manchester.

One night of accommodation for one person, with full wraparound support, costs just £30 – so the Greater Manchester Mayor’s Charity is asking that if anyone is able to give more, that they make additional donations via the Charity’s official ‘1,000 Beds for Christmas’ JustGiving page.

1,000 Beds for Christmas is the Greater Manchester Mayor’s Charity’s annual winter fundraising campaign which will formally launch later this month. A voluntary donation of £20, on top of a £10 ticket price (plus fees), will mean one night has been fully funded. Note that only those with an official ticket, purchased via Eventbrite, will be able to access the DJ battle event itself.

Wigan cleaning contractors TC Bibby acquired by national company Cleanology

Award-winning UK commercial cleaning firm Cleanology has continued its expansion programme with the acquisition of one of the largest cleaning contractors in North-West England, TC Bibby & Sons.

Based in Wigan, TC Bibby & Sons launched in 1931 with Managing Director, Geoff Bibby, the third generation of Bibbys to steer the company. Geoff Bibby, along with all existing staff members, will remain with the company.

The deal means Cleanology, headquartered in London, now employs over 1,200 people across the UK with revenues having doubled over the past year to over £25m.

Cleanology’s coverage in the North-West now includes Manchester, Liverpool, Blackpool, Preston, Blackburn, Bolton, Warrington and North Wales, with over 400 employees in the region alone.

Dominic Ponniah, CEO of Cleanology, described the deal as a meeting of minds, saying: “We are incredibly excited to be partnering with a long-established and reputable family business like TC Bibby & Sons, which shares our values and places its customers and staff at the centre of everything it does.”

Ponniah continued, “The North-West is our fast-growing region in the UK and we are excited to be investing in the region. We believe the potential is massive to expand our chemical-free and ethical cleaning services to local businesses over the next few years.”

Geoff Bibby said: “Joining Cleanology means our clients will continue to receive all the benefits of a locally-managed customer-centric business, but with the added benefits of additional support services, national coverage and new innovations in technology and sustainability.”

All contact details remain the same and the business will continue to operate from the office in York Street as normal. Cleanology also has an office in Brown Street in central Manchester.

The recent acquisition is the latest move in a rapid expansion for Cleanology, which has seen the firm secure new business across the UK, including a contract to clean three of Mercedes-Benz’s showrooms in the North-West earlier this year.

It is our belief that there is much more to come from them all, and that they will play an integral part in helping Simpson Millar to continue to open up the law.”

MBNA and Chester Zoo team up to launch climate change education programme for young people

Chester Zoo has announced the launch of a brand new education project, backed by credit card provider MBNA, designed to help young people understand how they can tackle climate change and boost sustainability

Ahead of COP27, the globally-focused climate change summit, the new initiative will begin delivering vital materials and information through the school curriculum with actions to help protect the planet

Chester Zoo, one of the UK’s most popular visitor attractions, has teamed up with leading credit card provider MBNA, also headquartered in Chester, to launch a new education project helping to inspire action around climate change and sustainability amongst young people.

With world leaders meeting in Egypt for COP27 to discuss action on climate change this month, the new programme addresses some of the rising issues impacting the planet including unsustainable travel, the meat trade, single use plastics and fast fashion.

Chester Zoo’s Climate Connection Project with MBNA’, will deliver multiple workshops with 1,500 young people aged 10 – 14 years old, from primary and secondary schools across the north west.

With ever-growing concerns on climate change and the need to educate future generations on its impact, the workshops aim to arm young people with actions they can take to help the planet. This includes sessions on social media centred around sustainable travel, a look into the realities of the fast fashion business and the impact of buying the latest smart phone every year.

All the young people taking part in the programme will also be given a free family ticket to visit Chester Zoo.

Charlotte Smith, Director of Conservation Education at Chester Zoo, said: “We’re delighted to be launching our new sustainability project with MBNA, as we continue to champion young people to help us protect our planet.

“A lot of young people are already aware of the environmental impact we’re having on the planet but are not always sure how they can help themselves and others. That’s why this project aims to inspire the classes we work with by making sessions more relevant to young people’s day to day lives.

“The debates around climate change and sustainability are, quite rightly, more prevalent than ever, and we understand this needs to be more than just teaching facts. We must empower the changes we, and the young people we work with,  want and need. Our sessions are designed to drive real behaviour changes – however small – and enable young people and their families to make more conscious choices.

“MBNA’s support enables us to reach more people. We’re really excited to see the impact of this project and instill a passion for real change.”

During the last academic year, Chester Zoo’s outreach programmes have worked with over 9,000 young people from 52 schools.

Victoria Dowd, Sponsorships Manager at MBNA, said: “As a Chester head quartered business, we’ve always been proud to work with Chester Zoo, an organisation that relies on donations and funding to deliver some truly world-leading conservation projects.

“This project is particularly special for us as it supports what we’re striving to achieve as a business. We’re really keen to continue to support the programme as it grows, and are proud to be backing such an important cause.”

Mawdesley-based children’s charity Rainbow Hub receives £1,000 from INEOS colleagues who completed ‘Tour de France’ cycling fundraiser

0

Mawdesley-based charity Rainbow Hub has received £1,000 from INEOS, the global chemicals company, to support children with physical and neurological disabilities.

The donation comes from the INEOS Tour de France challenge where 113 INEOS staff teams from across the globe have taken part in an ambitious cycling challenge, riding in teams from across its sites to complete the distance of every stage of the world famous Tour de France cycle race. Once completed all 21 stages, teams win the right to donate £1000 to a chosen charity. In total, INEOS are donating £113,000 through this initiative in 2022.

The team at INEOS Enterprises in London chose to support Rainbow Hub – a charity which provides life changing therapeutic services for children from across North West England and supports families as they navigate the challenges associated with raising a child with a physical or neurological disability.

Paul Maddison, Group Financial Controller at INEOS Enterprises, said: “The INEOS Tour de France Challenge is another brilliant initiative that has allowed us to support a charity very close to our hearts. Rainbow Hub has supported my daughter, Katie, since she was 18 months old (she’s now 16). They have helped her achieve some key developmental milestones and I am so grateful for all of the incredible work they do. It has been super special completing this ‘Tour de France’ challenge and I am proud to be raising funds together for Rainbow Hub.”

Lyndsay Fahey, CEO of Rainbow Hub, said: “All of the team at Rainbow Hub are delighted to receive the £1,000 donation and our thanks go to Paul and INEOS Enterprises for dedicating their Tour de France funds to our charity. Every penny we receive helps us to continue to offer our services which are so important to the children and families we support.”

This year, the Tour de France challenge saw 2,569 members of the INEOS team from 31 countries around the world cycle a total of 1,283,865km, the equivalent to an incredible 1,354 summits of Mont Blanc. The aim of the challenge was for each of the teams to complete the equivalent distance of each stage of the iconic Tour de France, each day, many of them squeezing in cycling sessions before, during and after work.
