NEW ALBUM ‘KNOWLEDGE FREEDOM POWER’ TO BE RELEASED ON FEBRUARY 24TH 2023 – PRE-ORDER HERE

FEATURING THE NEW SINGLE AND TITLE TRACK – LISTEN HERE

The critically acclaimed The Slow Readers Club will follow their 2020 Top 10 album ‘The Joy of the Return’ with the release of their new record ‘Knowledge Freedom Power’ on February 24th, 2023. The Manchester band launch the album by sharing its lead single and title track.

Nothing – not despots, pandemics, self-destruction or the rise of the machines – can keep a good band down. So, when The Slow Readers Club hit the studio in early 2022 with producer Joe Cross (Hurts / Courteeners), they battled dark times with a refreshing optimism. The result is ‘Knowledge Freedom Power’, a sizzling synth-rock beast of a record akin to White Lies, Muse and modern-day Bloc Party, and a rallying cry of emancipation, both stylistically and socially. It’s a righteous punch of the air, a surge towards the future.

Frontman Aaron Starkie says, “The world had got so bleak it felt a little indulgent to paint apocalyptic pictures when they were out in the real world. I thought people would probably want to hear more uplifting things, it was my intention to be a bit more positive. There’s still a lot of melodrama in there and it’s still dystopian in places but there’s more positive shades in this record.”

That positivity powers to the fore with the album’s lead single and title track, an instantly addictive hybrid of the band’s new pulsating synth style with their anthemic alt-rock roots. Its streamlined, straight-to-the-point hook highlights the fact that there can be an alternative to a world which is becoming increasingly authoritarian and ignoring the needs of the many in favour of the few.

Aaron adds, “Growing up as a council estate kid in Manchester I was very conscious of having a limited horizon and I guess I had a chip on my shoulder and something to prove. It’s that background that inspired both our band name and the album’s title track ‘Knowledge Freedom Power’. It is an exercise in positive sloganeering, a mantra for education as a means of a way out from social and psychological confinement.”

As much as the record finds The Slow Readers Club channelling a brighter spirit, there’s no dumbing down of their famously ferocious and insightful lyricism. A beam of hope shines throughout ‘Sacred Song’: part in the form of a spiritual saviour, but also embracing the power of love as a force for good, something which can also be achieved by the friendship and community spirit infused in ‘Lay Your Troubles On Me’. Yet a darkness still looms large, whether its within the warmongering satire – and ultimately individual powerlessness – of ‘Seconds Out’ or the steady march of automation over the human workforce on opener ‘Modernise’.

‘Knowledge Freedom Power’ is now available to pre-order HERE. It will be released on blue vinyl, CD and cassette, as well as digital and streaming formats.

‘Knowledge Freedom Power’ is the band’s sixth album and the latest giant leap in one of the greatest self-made success stories in recent British rock history. Since debuting in 2011 with their eponymous and self-released debut album, they’ve constantly grown in stature leading to sold-out headline gigs including the Manchester Apollo and London’s Scala, shows as guests to PixiesCatfish and The Bottlemen and James, as well as festivals stretching from the Neighbourhood Weekender to Mad Cool Madrid.

When lockdown kicked in the same week that ‘The Joy Of The Return’ debuted at #9The Slow Readers Club reacted to the cancellation of their touring plans by creating a darker, more ethereal set of songs, which they recorded via WhatsApp and Google Drive and by recording one band member at a time in the studio. The result was ‘91 Days in Isolation’, which they self-released in October 2020.

The Slow Readers Club recently announced details of their 2023 headline tour, which has already sold-out its homecoming show at Manchester’s Albert Hall. Remaining tickets for the tour are available HERE.

EvolveODM acquires IT firm GB3 from EG Group

Managed network solutions leader EvolveODM buys GB3 to create an IT services powerhouse in Lancashire, and aims to create 40 new jobs in the area within three years

Wigan-based managed network services provider EvolveODM has acquired Preston-based IT firm GB3 from EG Group to create an IT services powerhouse in Lancashire. GB3, which has 45 employees and a 10-year track record in IT support, will become a sister brand to EvolveODM.

EvolveODM has grown from 9 employees to 45 since 2018. Its customers include retail, hospitality, leisure, fuel and food-to-go firms such as Robinsons Brewery and Hydes Brewery, and EG Group-supported brands and franchises like KFC, Starbucks, ESSO, BP and Leon.

The acquisition was backed by Barclays Corporate Bank and will help EvolveODM’s bid to grow its business amongst networks of restaurants, convenience stores, fuel forecourts and more over the next three years.

Over the next three years, EvolveODM aims to grow its network management footprint from 7,500 locations to 15,000. And the Group estimates that its new combined offering could result in up to 40 new jobs being created within the Lancashire area by 2025.

Alan Stephenson-Brown, Director at Evolve Business Group, said: “We’ve been working closely with GB3 recently to fulfil mutual customer contracts, so we knew that acquiring GB3 would help us create a broader IT services business with a more expansive offering for our customers.

“This acquisition helps us on our mission to become an indispensable technology partner to retail, hospitality, and petroleum franchises. The two companies provide truly complementary services and together create a centre of excellence for IT in Lancashire’s growing digital sector.”

Barclays Corporate Bank provided acquisition finance for the deal. Shamir Patel, Relationship Director at Barclays Corporate Bank, said:

“Evolve is a thriving business looking to expand and grow. The new funding we’ve provided will enable it to broaden its offer to its client base and grow its market share.

“We’re also excited by the positive impact this will have on the Lancashire community. This deal can enhance the prospects of quality job creation in the innovative and thriving digital sector in the Lancashire region.”

The acquisition will lead to GB3’s customers benefiting from access to network management and EvolveODM’s 24/7 helpdesk. And EvolveODM’s customers will begin to enjoy access to IT strategy, due diligence, cybersecurity, IT security audit and cloud computing solutions.

Local law firms settles complicated commercial case

0

Manleys Solicitors, a leading Chester law firm, are celebrating another win, following a complicated commercial dispute between two businesses. The business owners, who are unnamed for legal reasons, failed to translate a verbal agreement into a written one. This led to jurisdictional issues, with Manley’s legal opponent being based in Northern Ireland, and no jurisdiction clause being agreed.

Led by Peri Mornington, Dispute Resolution Specialist and Solicitor, the law firm have congratulated her swift settlement of the jurisdictional dispute out of court. Despite the complications of Manley’s legal opponent residing in Northern Ireland, Peri Mornington secured £20,000 for her client.

Speaking on behalf of the law firm, Peri Mornington explains: “The lack of a formal agreement with jurisdiction clauses could have caused issues in this case but we were happily able to secure an advantageous result without proceedings. It is worth noting that a jurisdiction clause is something which is of relevance since Brexit.”

The solicitor added: “Friends and family, and even close business partners, often do not feel there is a need to formalise their agreements in writing. Unfortunately, relationships can and do break down. When this happens, disagreements can escalate to legal proceedings.”

Manley’s Law Firm

Manley’s was founded in 2012 by litigation and media lawyer Mark Manley. The law firm are a specialist litigation practice, building a strong rapport with clients and focused on achieving results. Manley’s are recognised by both the Legal 500 and Chambers & Partners independent legal directories.

AO delivers a dream night at the AO Arena for inspirational young cricketer

An inspirational young man enjoyed a dream night out at the AO Arena last Friday, thanks to online electricals retailer AO and its local sponsorship partners.

Thomas Jackson, who plays as a wicket keeper batter for Lancashire Cricket at County Age Group level, was honoured with the AO Recovery of the Year award last year following months of treatment for a brain tumour.

Last Friday, the 16-year-old enjoyed a special VIP experience at Hits Radio Live at the AO Arena in Manchester, which boasted an incredible line-up of pop acts including Sam Smith, Olly Murs and Craig David.

As sponsors of Lancashire Cricket Age Group and Medical Teams, AO were made aware of Thomas’ inspiring story and blown away by his courage and determination. Following his award win at Lancashire Cricket’s End of Season Awards, the team promised Thomas and his family a night to remember in their hospitality suite at the AO Arena, where they are also the headline sponsor.

The Hits Radio Live event was the ideal opportunity to invite the family down as special guests, since one of Thomas’ favourite acts, YouTube star and musician KSI, was performing.  The teams at the AO Arena and Hits Radio, the radio station behind the event, worked hard to deliver the full VIP treatment for the group, with the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to go backstage and meet one of the stars, Olly Murs.

On his experience at the AO Arena, Thomas said: “I really enjoyed our night at Hits Live and it was amazing to see all the different acts. I’m grateful to everyone who helped organise it.”

John Roberts, CEO and Founder of AO, said: “Thomas is an inspiration to so many people and everyone at AO is thrilled to see his recovery so far. As proud sponsors of the AO Arena, as well as the medical team at Lancashire Cricket, we wanted to offer Thomas and his family a personal invitation to join us for a special night that he’ll hopefully remember for many years to come.”

Paul Gerrard, Programme Director for Hits Radio said: “After hearing Thomas’ story, we were really keen to do all we could to help make his visit to Hits Live even more special. We hope he enjoyed his visit backstage and a very special meet and greet with one of our artists on the night, Olly Murs. We certainly enjoyed meeting Tom and his family.”

In 2020, Thomas was diagnosed with a Medulloblastoma, a cancerous brain tumour which affects muscle coordination, balance, and movement. His intense treatment has involved a trial period of proton beam therapy, followed by chemotherapy from January to October last year.

Thomas has received a whole host of support from the world of cricket during his battle, including teammates from club and county level, as well as video messages from famous faces such as Lancashire’s James Anderson, Jos Buttler and former England Test captain, Joe Root.

EMIRATES OLD TRAFFORD EVENTS DRIVE £27 MILLION BOOST TO THE GREATER MANCHESTER ECONOMY

0
  • New research from Marketing Manchester shows broader value of Emirates Old Trafford’s biggest events to the local economy
  • This year, international cricket, The Hundred and four sold-out concerts delivered an estimated £27m in value to Manchester’s economy
  • More than 325,000 spectators attended events at Emirates Old Trafford in 2022

New research has revealed the estimated economic impact of Emirates Old Trafford’s major events in 2022 to be worth in excess of £27 million to the local economy.

Marketing Manchester – the not-for-profit agency charged with promoting Greater Manchester on a national and international stage – has helped Emirates Old Trafford to evaluate across a range of economic-related impacts associated with staging major sporting and entertainment events.

Figures have been calculated utilising the eventIMPACTS Toolkit and based on the number of visitors to Emirates Old Trafford’s highest attended events throughout 2022. These include four sold-out concerts, featuring The Killers, Harry Styles and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, International cricket matches, and domestic T20 and Hundred fixtures: in excess of 325,000 total attendees.

The research estimates the broader financial impact of these visitors by using industry benchmarks for spending habits – for example accommodation, plus food and beverage costs – from both commercial and non-commercial visitors within the Manchester area, as a direct consequence of staging events at Emirates Old Trafford.

Lancashire Cricket Chief Executive, Daniel Gidney, said: “This summer saw an incredible run of events that delivered record-breaking numbers for the venue and it’s really pleasing to see the broader impact that this success is having in the local business community. 2023 is going to be even bigger and better, on and off the pitch. With an Ashes Test Match, the Arctic Monkeys plus the completion of the next phase of Emirates Old Trafford’s redevelopment, these are really exciting times for the venue and the cricket club.

“Emirates Old Trafford prides itself on being a place where experiences are made and next year promises to deliver many more amazing moments for hundreds of thousands of visitors”, he added.

Marketing Manchester’s Managing Director, Sheona Southern, added: “It’s clear that hosting major events helps generate positive economic impacts and we are lucky to have some of the most recognisable sporting institutions in the world on our doorstep in Manchester.

“2022 has been a major success story for Emirates Old Trafford and 2023 promises to be even better with an Ashes Test Match scheduled for local residents and fans from around the world to enjoy.”
