Hill Dickinson ranked #1 legal adviser for M&A in the North West

0

Leading law firm Hill Dickinson has been ranked as the top legal adviser for M&A transactions in the North West for the first three quarters of 2022, according to a new report by Experian Market IQ. The announcement marks an increase in activity for the team, rising through the ranks from 4th spot in H1 2022.

The news follows another active quarter for the firm’s North West corporate team, as it advised – in aggregate – on 35 transactions between 1st January 2022 and 30th September 2022.

The ranking for the North West team follows a record year for the corporate team nationally, which advised on more than 120 transactions in 2021 with a total value of more than £3.8 billion, an increase of more than £1 billion on the previous year.

Major deals include acting for Steve Parry MBE and Becky Adlington MBE on the sale of 60% of Total Swimming Limited to JD Sports, of which won Deal of the Year at the North West Insider Dealmakers Awards and advising on a significant minority investment in Xeinadin Group Limited, a leading professional services group in the UK and Ireland, by Exponent Private Equity.

Ian Riggs, National Head of Corporate at Hill Dickinson, said: “Today’s ranking from Experian is a reflection of the incredible work of the corporate team not just this quarter but over recent years. It is a recognition of our position as a trusted and leading adviser for M&A across the region, as we continue to work on behalf of some of the North West’s most ambitious businesses. And at a time when the region was readying itself for challenging economic circumstances, it is encouraging to see deal volumes – both among our client base and the wider North West – remain stable, outperforming the rest of the UK market.”

Businesses Pledge to Step Up Drive for Net Zero Job Opportunities Across the North West

0

Net Zero Projects and Investments across the North West have the potential to create 300,000 new and safeguarded jobs within the region.

To mark the one-year anniversary of COP26, a new Charter was launched yesterday (Wednesday, November 23) at the Great Northern Conference taking place in Manchester. The North West Net Zero Skill Charter will help businesses to step up to ensure these new opportunities can be harnessed for the benefit of communities and people across the region.

The Charter uses a Net Zero lens to articulate the skills and capabilities that are most important for businesses seeking to recruit new workers. The goal is to ensure skills providers are clear about what is required of them. Crucially, it also contains a commitment from businesses across the region to step up to support the upskilling of the region’s workforce.

The design of the new North West Net Zero Skill Charter has been led by the North West Business Leadership Team in partnership with Net Zero North West, Manchester Metropolitan University and the University of Chester.

The Charter commits all who sign up to:

  • Consider what Net Zero means for our business – operationally and in terms of future products, services, and supply chains.
  • Consider what impact these changes might have on job roles and key competencies including across leadership teams.
  • Support the skills system, through positive engagement, and practical assistance.
  • Be a champion for the transition to Net Zero, clearly articulating the commitment to Net Zero within the values and purpose of each organisation.
  • Encourage all employees to adopt a Net Zero mindset.
  • Encourage Net Zero literacy training to be rolled out to all employees (shop floor to board level).
  • Spread learning through every supply chain.

Professor Eunice Simmons, Chair of NWBLT’s People & Skills Group and Vice-Chancellor at the University of Chester:

“The challenge of achieving a net zero region by 2040 is huge.  However, it also brings with it great opportunity for the North West in terms of good green jobs – many of these jobs already exists within our businesses and others are just waiting to be created. The commitments within the Charter will help ensure that the North West grasps all the opportunities being presented to it to meet the net zero challenge – and deliver better growth for all.”

Carl Ennis, Chair of Net Zero NW and Chief Executive of Siemens UK and Ireland:

‘“The North West is already leading the UK’s net zero future, slashing carbon emissions and carving a new path by creating a green industrial economy with a workforce of over 660,000.  However, the availability of the right skills will be a significant risk to reaching our climate goals if we don’t act now.

“The joined-up approach that the Net Zero Skills Charter aims to deliver, will ensure we set the blueprint for how to train and retain low carbon talent in the region, and then export that expertise out to the rest of the UK, Europe and the world.”

Steve Rotheram, Mayor of Liverpool City Region:

Climate change is the single greatest challenge facing all our futures – and it’s one that must be met with an immediate, collective response. Like our neighbours across the North, the Liverpool City Region is in the race to decarbonise – and I want to ensure that our journey to reaching net zero is a force for good, not only for our planet, but for our people too.

“If trains, docks and canals made us the gateway to the first industrial revolution, then our natural assets and advantages in wind, tidal and hydrogen can make us leader of the Green Industrial Revolution. I want our region to be in the best position to take advantage of the thousands of jobs, training and investment opportunities in the industries of tomorrow. With every challenge comes opportunity – and I’m committed to making sure we harness every opportunity that comes our way.”

Emma Degg, CEO, NWBLT:

“While we know that new net zero investments have the potential to create new employment opportunities for local people, this will only happen if we work closely together. That means business stepping up to do our bit to inspire young people, reach out to diverse communities and those who have been previously left behind, and invest in the training of our own workforces.

“We have a brilliant opportunity to deliver a fairer economy and net zero at the same time – but only if we work in a purposeful way towards that goal.”

Scoop Expands Its Hospitality Roster with King Pins, Exhibition and Tonight Josephine

Manchester based PR and marketing agency, Scoop, has expanded its F&B and hospitality roster with three new client wins, including the home of bottomless brunch, Tonight Josephine.

As specialists in devising and delivering strategic PR & marketing campaigns for scaling businesses in the hospitality sector, Scoop will be working with King Pins, Exhibition as well as Tonight Josephine, as they expand into the North West.

Scoop was appointed by The Adventure Bar Group & Nightcap Plc to introduce its Tonight Josephine brand to Liverpool, the first of the hospitality giants’ venues in the north. Manchester and Liverpool schools benefit from donation of 300 Deloitte laptops

  • Firm donates 350 laptops a month to help tackle the digital skills gap
  • Over 50% given to schools across the UK*, with the remainder benefiting charities and community groups
  • CEO Richard Houston pledges a further 5,000 laptops every year

Deloitte has donated a total of 6,865 laptops to schools, charities and community groups across the UK since first committing to donating the firm’s used laptops in 2021.

Schools in the North West such as St Peters RC High School and Whalley Range 11-18 High School in Manchester and Holly Lodge Girls College in Liverpool have benefitted from the donations, having received 100 laptops each.

Over half (3,600) of the reconditioned laptops have been donated to pupils from 58 schools across the UK, including 25 of Deloitte’s 5 Million Future partner schools, with 3 schools located in the North West.

A survey of schools* that received the laptops during the third national lockdown in 2021 found that teachers reported an improved quality of learning and attendance in online lessons, improved progress and attainment, improved mental health, and increased digital skills.

Stephen Gabriel, headteacher at St Peters RC High School in Manchester, said:

“The laptops that were kindly donated by Deloitte have helped to replace some of the computers that had been retired during an IT overhaul, bringing in a higher quality of equipment that is compatible with the school’s existing IT systems.”

“41 of the Deloitte laptops were allocated to the Art, Design and Technology department, where they’re being used to complete coursework and have undoubtedly been a contributing factor in some excellent results achieved in these subjects since.”

“A further 30 of the laptops were allocated to the Inclusion department, helping to support pupils with Special Educational Needs throughout the school. These laptops are also used during examination periods to help dyslexic and visually impaired pupils to access the exam papers via screen-reader technology.”

Deloitte has reaffirmed its commitment by pledging a further 5,000 laptops every year.

Richard Houston, Senior Partner and Chief Executive at Deloitte UK, said:

“We live in a digitally divided world with unequal access to technology and the skills to use it. Throughout the pandemic we supported thousands of the most vulnerable children to stay connected to education.

“We’ve committed to donating 5,000 of our used laptops to schools, charities and refugees every year to help bridge the digital skills gap and support people to overcome barriers to education and employment.

“The possibilities that technology brings can transform businesses and our communities, but only if we put people at the heart of technological progress and help equip them for the future of work.”

Damian Collins, Digital Minister for the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, said:

“We’re committed to closing the digital divide so young people can take full advantage of the internet’s learning opportunities. We’re investing more than £400 million to boost access to remote education – including securing 1.3 million laptops and tablets for disadvantaged young people – as well as rolling out lightning-fast gigabit broadband to thousands of schools.

“It’s great that Deloitte shares our goal to get more children gaining digital skills that will last them a lifetime.”

Following the opening of Apadmi offices in Edinburgh, Lisbon and Utrecht earlier this year, The Mobile Company’s Amsterdam HQ gives Apadmi a further foothold in the increasingly buoyant market in the Dutch capital.

Apadmi’s M&A Director, Jasper van de Luijtgaarden said: “Many businesses are well progressed with their digital transformation journeys, but with an extended team of digital product experts now in Amsterdam, we are well-placed to support that process across Europe.”

Forbes Solicitors has helped secure a long-term lease for vegan pasta restaurant Pastan in Manchester’s popular Royal Exchange.

The opening of the plant-based restaurant at 18 Cross Street, Manchester, follows the success of Pastan’s London eatery in the Barbican. The Manchester venue features an open kitchen and capacity for 26 covers and will serve up a variety of homemade pasta dishes and delicacies.

Founded by Dean Fawcett and Jerome Ibanez-Fawcett, who have worked in hospitality for more than 20 years, the Manchester restaurant has created five new jobs and forms part of national expansion plans. Pastan is also targeting new openings in Bristol and Brighton in the coming months.

Jerome Ibanez-Fawcett said: “Manchester is the perfect location for our second restaurant. It is home to a thriving community of vegans, flexitarians and foodies who appreciate great taste and quality ingredients. There’s also a strong passion for more sustainable dining-out experiences – a passion we share through our partnership with Carbon Free Dining.

“Our new restaurant is in an ideal location to meet demand from a rich mix of lunch and dinner guests, and we appreciate Forbes Solicitors’ support in securing such a prime spot.”

Retail and leisure property agents Hynes Illingworth worked alongside Forbes, with the restaurant opening on 11th November 2022.

Helen Marsh, a partner in the commercial property team at Forbes Solicitors, added: “Pastan has gone from strength-to-strength, following early success as a series of pop-ups, and then establishing a busy restaurant in the Barbican. It’s been a privilege to be part of the next stage in their growth journey and always exciting to see innovative new restaurants opening in a real foodie-loving city such as Manchester.”
