Tate Liverpool looks to Contra Vision for its Turner Prize window graphics

0

When one of Britain’s foremost institutions decides on what material to use for its window advertising to promote the Turner Prize, it looks to Contra Vision to provide the solution. Tate Liverpool has been using Contra Vision® Performance™ HD film for several years, because of the exclusive properties this breakthrough printable film delivers.

Developed by Contra Vision in Bramhall, Stockport, UK the film allows passers-by to enjoy vibrant images, but walk inside the gallery and visitors will be greeted by the sight of the Royal Albert Dock as this film offers one-way vision through a window.

The micro perforations in the material ensure that the view through the window is clear and that light enters the gallery, creating a bright and welcoming entrance area for visitors. Unless you experience it for yourself, you can hardly believe the graphics are there.

This is the first time that the Turner Prize has returned to the city in 15 years, so it is a special occasion for Tate Liverpool. The winner of the prize will be selected on 7 December at an award ceremony held in St George’s Hall and in the meantime, the four shortlisted nominees have had their work on show at the Liverpool waterfront venue since 20 October. The work will remain on show at Tate Liverpool until 19 March 2023.

The four shortlisted artists for the Turner Prize 2022 are:

  • Heather Phillipson
  • Ingrid Pollard
  • Veronica Ryan
  • Sin Wai Kin

The Turner Prize is awarded to a British Artist for an outstanding exhibition of their work during the preceding year

Capital&Centric start Farnworth Green reboot to round off successful year of growth

0

WORK to overhaul Farnworth and create an inclusive town centre neighbourhood is officially underway. Social mission developers Capital&Centric have kick-started construction to deliver a design-led community with homes, café bars, shops and green outdoor hangout spaces.

Consented this year by Bolton Council, Capital&Centric’s re-boot – named Farnworth Green – is backed in part by the Government’s Future High Street Fund, the Greater Manchester Combined Authority’s Brownfield Housing Fund and Bolton Council’s District Centres Fund.

It’s all about breathing new life into the 60s precinct site and ushering in a new chapter of town centre living, with family homes alongside spaces for an eclectic mix of independent operators. Initial demolition of the outdated shops is happening first, with construction of the new buildings following early next spring.

The major milestone rounds off a year of sustained growth for the Manchester-based developers, who’ve this year got underway on anchor town centre projects in the likes of Stockport (Weir Mill) and Stoke-on-Trent (Goods Yard).

Tim Heatley, co-founder of Capital&Centric, said:

“Our intention from the off was to design a really liveable town centre in Farnworth, one where new residents can forge a future and existing locals can spend quality time as a community. It’s all part of bringing quality design and finishes you usually expect from city centres into Greater Manchester’s suburban towns.

“That comes with its own challenges, least of all the current economic climate and overcoming rising costs across the board. But with our track record and the continued support from the Council, Combined Authority and Government, we’ll face the challenges head on to deliver something standout for Farnworth.”

Bolton Council’s Executive Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Cllr Adele Warren, said:

“Our commitment to regeneration goes beyond Bolton town centre to delivering projects in districts across the borough.

“We worked closely with local stakeholders to design a Farnworth masterplan that directly address the priorities of the local community.

“I’m sure everyone is excited as we are to see work finally start on Farnworth Green, which together with other projects shows there is real momentum around local regeneration.”

Bolton Council Leader, Cllr Martyn Cox, said:

“We want each of our town and district centres to be more vibrant and exciting places to live, work and visit.

“Farnworth Green is a great example of the council working with the government and a private developer to deliver a project that will have a lasting positive impact on the community and local economy.

“A number of key developments are now underway in Farnworth, and across the borough, as we deliver on our regeneration plans.”

When complete, Farnworth Green will deliver liveable town centre, with spaces that help foster the community coming together, including:

  • Design-led homes: Including 85 one and two bedroom apartments as well as 12 family homes (two and three bedroom) to create a real mix of residents calling Farnworth home
  • Commercial: Over 20,000 sq.ft of space for bars, cafes and independent stores
  • Community hub: A groundfloor community hub, providing a space to meet-up
  • A new public square: Complete with green spaces and places to relax
  • Outdoor community spots: Including an events pavilion, set to support outdoor community events from art and live music to makers markets
  • Greenery: Lush landscaping to introduce greenery to the town centre
  • Accessibility: Pedestrian links through the community and safe cycle storage

Set for completion in 2024 construction is expected to create jobs and apprenticeships for local young people.

Everything you Need to Know About Incognito Mode

Do you ever want to hide your activity online? You might need to secretly shop for gifts for a loved one with whom you share a device. Perhaps you want to find cheap accommodation without a provider following you and hiking its prices. Whatever the case, most web browsers allow you to stop storing the pages you visit.

In Chrome, the market leader in the UK, this option is called incognito mode. You might know it as InPrivate mode or Private Browsing if you use Microsoft Edge or Safari. But regardless of preferences, is this setting as private as you might think?

What incognito mode does

Most web browsers keep a record of the pages you visit to make it easier to return to them. But you can temporarily stop this to keep your activity private from anyone else using the same browser.

In Chrome, you can enable this option by tapping the three-dot button in the top right corner and selecting ‘New incognito window’. Then everything that you do in that tab won’t be recorded in your browser history.

What incognito mode doesn’t do

You’re wrong if you think you’re completely safe from view in incognito mode. Sure, someone using your device won’t see what you’ve been up to. But others can.

The websites in question will know about your visits, for example, and their advertisers will, too. Any site you log into will record you doing so, while network managers at work or elsewhere can also see your activities. The same goes for your internet provider if– and you aren’t protected from the law, either.

Its limitations don’t end there. Any downloads that you make in incognito will go into your main downloads folder, while new bookmarks still show up in regular browser windows.

How to actually browse privately

There are a few ways to achieve true privacy online:

  • Use a virtual private network (VPN) to encrypt your internet traffic and mask your IP address. Some VPNs offer malware protection, ad blocking and other security features.
  • Switch to a privacy-focused browser which blocks trackers and won’t log your data for profit.
  • While you’re at it, switch to a privacy-focused service engine like DuckDuckGo which won’t track your searches.
  • Disable third-party cookies (which track you across platforms) manually through your browser settings.
  • Make a habit of clearing your cookies. Most are harmless, but not all.

Should you use incognito mode?

Incognito can be useful in some cases, such as staying private on shared devices. It’s also handy if you need to log into the same platform with two accounts at the same time. You might also want to keep personal details hidden on a public computer.

Whatever you choose to use it for, knowing its limitations and how to get around them will help you to browse more privately.

UNITED BY YOUR SIDE: OLD TRAFFORD TO OPEN UP FOR THE COMMUNITY

0

Manchester United will open the doors of Old Trafford to the local community during December to help those facing difficult months ahead as part of the club’s winter campaign – United by Your Side.

As temperatures fall and heating bills rise, the Red Cafe at the iconic stadium will provide those in need with a space to stay warm, chat, have a hot drink and some snacks.

The area will be available to everyone, free of charge, every Monday and Wednesday for the next three weeks, starting 6 December from 5:00pm to 8:00pm. People can arrive and register via the North Stand reception and will be guided to the Red Cafe.

In addition to the warm space the club are introducing ‘talking benches’ on the forecourt at Old Trafford – signposted as a welcoming place for people who may feel lonely or worried to sit and talk to others.

Collette Roche, Manchester United’s Chief Operating Officer, said: “Whether Christmas is part of people’s life or not, the festive period can be a difficult time for many. It’s a time of year that puts extra pressure on people and can affect mental health and wellbeing in lots of different ways.

“Through our United by Your Side campaign, we want people who are struggling to know that they are not alone, particularly in our local community. We want to make Old Trafford a second home by providing winter accessories, company, warmth and food for those who need it.”

The club is working with Trafford Council and local charities to deliver the initiatives and communicate them to people who may benefit most.

Eleanor Roaf, Director of Public Health, Trafford Council, said: “This year with the increase in cost of heating and food, many people are likely to find winter and the festive period challenging. I’m delighted that Manchester United are opening their Red Cafe and providing this space with hot snacks and drinks. This helps to how football is at the heart of our borough.”

Manchester Mind have been supporting better mental health for over 30 years. They believe in the power of listening and being heard and know that talking about mental health is often the first step to feeling better.

Elizabeth Simpson, CEO of Manchester Mind, said “We know that many people are struggling at the moment due to the cost-of-living crisis, and that this is impacting their mental health. This can feel overwhelming and isolating. During these challenging times we also know that our local organisations play a key role in supporting the most vulnerable in our community, and we are proud to be a part of United by Your Side this winter.”

If you, or someone you know, is living with a mental health problem or struggling with rising costs, having access to the right information is vital. Visit Manchester Mind’s website to access their cost of living information here and their wellbeing hub here.

North West based Seddon wraps milestone year with £1m in fundraising for The Christie and local food banks

  • North West based contractor Seddon wraps up 125th birthday year with £1m now fundraised for The Christie
  • Team runs, cycles, walks, swims and sky-dives the length of the UK’s coastline three times to raise the landmark figure
  • Other funds have also been raised to support local foodbanks, homeless accommodation and schools as employees select charities close to their hearts

Family-owned contractor Seddon and its supply chain have come together to celebrate its 125th year in business by fundraising over £1m to cancer charity, The Christie, contributing to its new Macclesfield centre as well raising funds for local food banks, through a series of inspiring pledges.

A total of 14,220 miles – equivalent to a staggering 36m steps – were ran, cycled, swam, sky-dived and beyond across a momentous year that saw employees reconnecting with one another after a challenging few years. Together, the team’s fundraising feats represented one million ways to say thank you to a charity close to the hearts of so many.

The Seddon family has a deep personal connection with The Christie, as two family members have received treatment at the specialist cancer hospital. The late Christopher Seddon (MBE) was treated at The Christie for lung cancer and just a few years later, his daughter, Nicola Hodkinson, was diagnosed with breast cancer. Nicola was treated by The Christie at its Withington centre before being declared cancer-free seven months later.

Marie Toller, head of major relationships at The Christie charity, said: “Seddon’s incredibly generous fundraising efforts mean a huge amount to The Christie, so reaching £1m in donations is outstanding. We really appreciate all the charity’s support over the last 25 years.

“The money directly improves services and helps us to support patients, their families and loved ones during difficult times. It has also significantly contributed to the construction cost of our new centre in Macclesfield, making treatments even more accessible for our patients in the surrounding area for many years to come.”

The distances covered by staff through a raft of events amount to travelling around the UK’s coastline three times. 1,700 staff members, along with supply chain partners and customers took part in fundraising events during a landmark year for the contractor.

A total of 103 staff members completed the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge across the region’s three biggest mountains, Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough in under 12 hours, with participants racking up a combined 2,678 miles. Seddon staff also took part in 850 park runs, 65 bike rides and 24 football matches with 250 food parcels and easter eggs were donated to local charities and food banks.

In addition, managing director Peter Jackson completed a mammoth 125km canal walk between Birmingham in Manchester during the sweltering summer heat, whilst Seddon Homes donated £250 for every new home sold between September 2020 to December 2022.

From Seddon Group CEO Jonathan Seddon running the London and Manchester Marathons dressed as Seddon mascot, Seddy Teddy, through to an employee sky-dive, efforts have come from all areas of the business. Each event was selected to amplify the sense of community that powers Seddon and all the work it does.

“This is our culture, this is who we are,” said owner and director at Seddon, Nicola Hodkinson. “We’re a sociable organisation, so to come together to reconnect with each other after a difficult few years has been nothing short of inspirational. Together, we’ve walked across hot coals, jumped out of planes and climbed mountains. Every individual effort means so much to Seddon and shows one million ways to say thank you to The Christie for the life-changing work it does and to our local communities too.”

She continued: “Few contractors have the heritage that we do; 125 years of business is something to be immensely proud of. As a family-run business that knows all too well of the impact cancer can have on our lives, we are proud to support them in every way that we can.”

As well as the financial amount raised for The Christie, employees were encouraged to support charities close to their hearts. Other pledges included donations of gardening equipment to Rowley Hall Primary School, time and resources were donated to complete a garden refurb at the Gateway in Coventry and the donation of 125 tickets to the 2022 Commonwealth Games to employees, customers, and supply chain partners.

Rochdale’s Healey Dell Tea Rooms featured in new TV ad

Healey Dell Tea Rooms in Rochdale is set to take centre stage in a new TV ad, being shown on Channel 4 from 1st December.

The vintage chandelier-lit tea rooms on the banks of the River Spodden were used as the location for the 30-second ad to launch a new northern-based insurance comparison website, OwMuch.com.

Healey Dell was the perfect location to set the scene for the ad, but also an essential choice to ensure everything about the ad stayed true to OwMuch’s northern roots.

Anthony Rushton, OwMuch Founder, said: “I’m from Accrington so it’s important to me to speak honestly to the people of the North. My one stipulation for the ad was to keep it authentically northern. Healey Dell Tea Rooms is exactly that, authentically Northern. And from that backdrop, we were able to bring our authentically Northern vision of the ad to life.”

The ad itself was created by Manchester-based independent advertising and video production agency, Koala. It features Yorkshire-based rapper ExP and also stars Anthony himself as Mr OwMuch.

James Rees, Koala’s Creative Director said: “As soon as I heard the lyrics that ExP had written, I immediately saw the ad set in a Northern tea room with plenty of bizarre interactions. We couldn’t have found a better location than Healey Dell. Yes we’re playing on being from the North, but it isn’t done at the North’s expense. We’ve created something that is honest and true, as well as fun. Everyone that worked on the shoot is from the North – from the talent to the make-up artists and of course our two main stars.

“This is a completely new brand in a crowded marketplace. We knew we had to do something that would stand out and be memorable. With the current financial situation affecting so many people across the region, we also wanted to create an ad full of positivity and energy, which would be 30 seconds of fun and joy on people’s screens.”

And it was the idea of keeping everything authentic to the North that led to the creative decision for Anthony to appear in the ad himself.

James continued: “Anthony was never meant to be in the ad, but I’m sure you can all agree that he makes an absolutely cracking Mr OwMuch. It was also great that Anthony was on board to do it because that’s a huge thing to take on.”

Lisa Mok from Healey Dell Tea Rooms said: “It was such a fun few days welcoming Koala, Anthony, ExP and everyone involved with the shoot to Healey Dell. They were fantastic to work with and we feel privileged that our tea rooms were chosen for the backdrop of their ad. We can’t stop singing the jingle and are super excited to see Healey Dell on our TVs soon.”

The ad will launch Owmuch.com on 1st December on Channel 4.

HMG Paints Sponsor Love Factory City of Champions during World Cup

Football’s Coming Home to HMG Paints this World Cup as the Manchester based Paint company sponsors a new community initiative in Collyhurst, the firms long term home.  HMG Paints have sponsored a new project, City of Champions, during the 2022 World Cup. Schoolchildren from across North Manchester have marked England’s early World Cup success with an inspirational football-themed event at Manchester’s newest independent cultural venue, Love Factory.

Pupils from primary schools in Collyhurst were invited to take part in the ‘City of Champions’ event at the new 89,000 sq ft multi-purpose venue, which is hosting screenings of every England World Cup fixture during the tournament. Collyhurst has also been the home of HMG Paints, the UK’s leading independent paint manufacturer since they were formed in 1930.

The City of Champions event – other sponsors included Victoria North developer Far East Consortium (FEC) and contractor CRUK – saw young football enthusiasts receive free coaching sessions from UEFA-qualified coaches Football Kings, as well as inspirational talks from the founders of Classic Football Shirts and Miss Kick.  The schools included in the City of Champions event were Saviours CofE Primary School, St Malachy’s Catholic Primary School and Abbott Community School.

“As a proud member of the Collyhurst community, we’re proud to support this great event” added John Falder, HMG Paints Chairman and Chair of Greater Manchester Academies Trust. “HMG Paints have a long history of working with local schools on projects and engaging with the community and we’re fully behind this great initiative. It’s great to see the Irk Valley becoming a hub not just for manufacturing innovation, but also for events that bring the community closer together.”

Having already hosted 1,300 fans for England’s opening game vs Iran, Love Factory World Cup 2022 will present an experiential programme of events inspired by the beautiful game, with matches streamed live on three 200 sq ft screens. The Official Carling Fan Zone will combine live matches with unique exhibitions from Classic Football Shirts, interactive activities, street food vendors and exclusive hospitality.

Part of Manchester’s fast-changing New Town neighbourhood, the former Dantzic Warehouse has been leased by FEC to local creatives Connecting Dots Group. The new venue is just one of a number of sites being re-activated as part of FEC’s development of Victoria North – one of the UK’s largest urban regeneration projects, which will create 15,000 new homes in Manchester city centre over the next 10 years.

Olli Ryder, founder of Connecting the Dots, said: “We’re excited to bring this amazing space back into action for the city, with the World Cup acting as a great opportunity for people to see it for the first time. The site itself is uniquely steeped in the industrial history of Manchester, and will soon be home to an eclectic mix of high energy events, from food festivals and music events to exhibitions and theatre productions. With major broadcasters like Sky Sports already hosting events here, Love Factory is set to be a major addition to the city.”

Jake Scott-Thrale, asset manager at FEC, said: “It’s great to be working with Connecting the Dots on this initial activation and that we can use this building to bring together children from the various schools in the local community to learn more about the importance of sport in our wellbeing and how sport can connect people and communities”.
