Proper Manchester is named the most engaged and fastest growing local news publisher in the United Kingdom

0

Manchester’s Finest Group is thrilled to announce that Proper Manchester has been confirmed as the most engaged and fastest growing local news publisher in the UK.

Ranked by Facebook’s monitoring platform CrowdTangle, Proper Manchester had the most interactions (18.81 million) all UK local news publishers for the whole of 2022, and the biggest percentage growth in followers when compared to all global media.

The growth has been an incredible 24.24% – double that of their next nearest competitor Wales Online who ranked 2nd with 12.62%, and considerably ahead of the average growth of 7.21% across all other UK local media.

Impressively, Proper Manchester also made the top 10 (based on interactions) for all UK national media, ranking 8th just behind Sky News.

Proper Manchester is part of Manchester’s Finest Group and has rapidly grown to become one of the North West’s most influential news platforms. An incredible feat that has been achieved by a comparatively small team, creating a fraction of the output of the established media platforms, in just three years since the platform’s inception.

2022 has seen the Proper team navigate a range of content from national breaking news stories, original features, client content, and new video series’ – the latest of which ‘Proper Scran’ is in partnership with Uber Eats.

Part of the growth strategy was to increase the unique video content and Proper started growing the video team in spring, recruiting Eleanor Ingleby (formerly at LADbible Group) as Social Video Manager. Consequently, viewed minutes on video content shot up immediately and the rest of the year continued to go from strength to strength. In December alone 112 million people were reached on Facebook – another record number – racking up millions of interactions and growing the page by nearly 20,000 new followers that month. A fantastic result to end the year on.

Jamie Roberts, Head of Content for Proper Manchester, said: “I’m absolutely buzzing that we’ve achieved this, especially with such a small but dedicated team, managing to compete with and overtake the big, established local publishers, like M.E.N and Wales Online.

Sticking to our strategy of posting the most relatable content for our audience and never missing a trick with breaking news stories, we managed to keep it steady and maintain our goal of being the most engaged local publisher in the entire UK on Facebook.

To see the enormous growth in our page is special for us as a small team, with 168k new Facebook followers joining us for the ride this year, and we can’t wait to carry this success on into 2023!”

Sophia Crilly, Business Development Director for Manchester’s Finest Group, said: “We’re so proud of what Jamie and the team on Proper have achieved in the past year – it’s a fantastic result for a small team creating a fraction of the output of the established media platforms, so the quality of content speaks for itself.

2022 was an exciting year of growth for the whole group as we grew to 22 strong and moved to new 2,650 sq ft premises in the Northern Quarter, as well as growing our combined social following to well over 2 million.

We have ambitious plans for Manchester’s Finest Group and Proper Manchester is an integral part of our growth strategy as we welcome a new writer to the Proper team this month and prepare to expand the video team.

We’re looking forward to maintaining our position as the most engaged and fastest growing local news publisher in the UK and to growing our lead from 2nd to rank 1st for national and global news interactions in 2023, as well as aiming for the top 5 for all UK national media.

Manchester is unique in that we have a few competitors in the space we occupy as publishers, but we are looking to cement our lead and position ourselves as the largest and leading lifestyle and news publisher here.”

Stockport insurance technology firm CDL awarded Top Employer

Stockport insurance technology firm CDL has been named the best places to work in the UK for the seventh year running after retaining the prestigious Top Employers certification.

The accreditation recognises organisations with progressive people practices, from approaches to acquiring new talent to opportunities for development and frameworks for reward and recognition, as well as strong values and vision and excellent working conditions.

The announcement comes after a year in which CDL introduced a range of initiatives to help manage the impact of the cost-of-living crisis. It continues to offer a range of wellbeing schemes, including a subsidised restaurant at its technology campus, social events and fundraising and volunteering opportunities; in 2022, the company donated almost £195,000 to worthy causes in and around Greater Manchester.

Also last year, CDL reaffirmed its status as one of the UK’s leading insurance technology service providers by taking the top spot in BusinessCloud’s InsurTech 50 ranking, as well as featuring in the elite InsurTech 100 list of the most innovative organisations in the insurance industry worldwide.

Significantly, it completed the migration of all its core systems customers to AWS Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud-hosting in just over 12 months, enabling it to offer its solutions under a Software as a Service model, with low code/no code updates meaning that customers benefit from greater speed of deployment and ease of maintenance.

Speaking of the certification, CDL Director of People, Frank Robinson, said: “We are delighted to be recognised as a Top Employer for a seventh consecutive year, in particular for doing what we can to support the welfare of colleagues facing challenging economic circumstances. Our people have once again been integral to a momentous year, and just as we can’t stand still in pioneering new technologies, we also have to continue to strive to improve as an employer. On behalf of the Leadership Team, I’d like to thank everyone who continues to make CDL a great place to work.”

The Top Employers Institute is the global authority on recognising excellence in people practices and undertakes international research each year to identify leading employers around the world. Crucial to achieving the certification is the completion of the institute’s rigorous HR Best Practice Survey, which covers topics ranging from Talent Acquisition and Learning to Diversity and Inclusion. To ensure the validity of the certification process, all survey responses are subject to an independent external audit.

Equans appoints from within to run North West Operating Unit

Leading energy, services and regeneration company Equans has appointed Steven Gregory to run its North West Operating Unit, based in Salford.

Steven joined the business at the beginning of 2019 and led the new build and construction operations in the North West, before becoming the Director of core operations in the region.

His work in the region led to his promotion as Regional Director for the North West business at the end of 2022 as part of Equans’ strategy of investing in and supporting its people.

Equans is a provider of technical services, facilities management, regeneration and energy services, with a strong footprint in the North West across sustainable construction and regeneration. Equans’ portfolio in the region includes the decarbonisation and refurbishment of social housing, large construction schemes for both domestic and commercial use, and decarbonisation work that supports public bodies in reaching their carbon net-zero goals. For example, Equans has recently worked alongside Rochdale Borough Council to decarbonise buildings such as schools, Rochdale Leisure Centre and the council’s headquarters, utilising funding from the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme.

Steven said: “Equans is an excellent company to be part of, with great values, great prospects, and great people. This opportunity is testament to how the business invests in their people. I’m very excited for the challenge ahead and look forward to working closer with our people, our customers, and the communities we operate in by safely and successfully delivering on our commitments.”

John Haynes, Managing Director of Equans’ Places and Communities North region, said: “I’m delighted that Steven has been promoted to Regional Director, overseeing activity across the North West region. 2023 is an important year for Equans as we work to support our partners with their construction and decarbonisation needs, and the region is in safe hands with Steven at the helm.”

Oldham Council secures new Levelling Up funding of £20 million from Government

Funding has been confirmed through the Levelling Up fund for eco-friendly projects in Oldham; including a learning centre at Northern Roots; a new “Green Shoots” business centre, and an “Oldham Greenway” to connect areas together by bike or on foot.
The bid, for £20m in funding, was one of only three successful bids from across Greater Manchester.

The aim of the funding is to boost opportunities for residents and businesses through better connectivity, sustainability, culture, innovation and job opportunities.

Oldham Council Leader Amanda Chadderton said: “Oldham has so much potential and as a Council we continue to do everything in our power to help our communities and our borough thrive.

“We welcome the £20 million we’ve secured for our Greener Oldham projects in the borough. This proves Government has confidence in our regeneration plans and the work we are doing throughout our Creating a Better Place programme – creating an town where people want to live, work and visit.

“Towns like ours have been hit hardest by austerity, the pandemic and the cost-of-living crisis. But despite this we remain one of the most entrepreneurial towns in the UK.

“We have a clear direction for Oldham and have worked with partners to identify exciting projects as part of our Levelling Up bids, which will help us to build a better borough and future. So much work has gone into this successful bid, and it’s great to see that our ambition has been recognised and invested in.”

The successful bid was for the Oldham East and Saddleworth constituency and includes three key project areas to help us build back greener.

It also backs our Greener Oldham commitment to being carbon neutral as a borough by 2030, as part of Oldham’s Green New Deal. The three projects are:

-The Green Shoots Centre; a new business centre to support environment technology start-ups, based at Rhodes Bank – which will be net zero, powered by renewable energy including a mine water system

-Northern Roots Learning Centre; an education facility based at our landmark Northern Roots project, which is creating the UK’s largest urban farm on land near Alexandra Park. The learning centre will provide training linked to green and sustainable skills, supporting the Green Shoots Centre. It will also be used as an educational centre to help strengthen environmental skills through vocational courses.

-The Oldham Greenway, to link the Green Shoots Centre, new town centre Jubilee Park and Northern Roots together, so people can easily travel by bike or on foot to the new venues and across the town centre.

The Levelling Up bids follow Oldham Council’s successful applications to secure Towns Fund and Future High Streets Fund grants of £24.4m and £10.75m respectively.

A second bid to the Levelling Up fund for a Creative Improvement District in Oldham West and Royton was unfortunately unsuccessful.

Sale Sharks Foundation and MBNA team up to tackle disability and inclusion agendas in the North West

Sale Sharks Foundation, in alliance with national credit card provider MBNA, has revealed a brand new disability and inclusion scheme aimed to encourage those living with disabilities into sport.

The programme, Tackle Together, will include inclusive tag rugby sessions, wheelchair rugby and Down’s Syndrome rugby sessions and will reach over 1,000 young people.

The Community Foundation of Premiership Rugby union side, Sale Sharks has teamed up with leading credit card provider MBNA to launch a new disability and inclusion project to offer young people with disabilities more access to inclusive sport.

The Tackle Together programme will provide accessible sessions of both touch and tag rugby, with three individual sessions; Inclusive Rugby, Wheelchair Rugby and Down’s Syndrome Rugby. The Sale Sharks Foundation team will work with school sites and veteran hubs with young disabled people, as well as those with visual, audio and physical impairments.

The Down’s Syndrome Rugby sessions will take place every month at Sharks’ Carrington training centre and will also include a chance for those taking part to play at halftime during a Premiership game at the AJ Bell Stadium.

The Wheelchair Rugby sessions will take place in mainstream schools and are intended to educate children and raise awareness around disability within sport, offering pupils the opportunity to experience this for themselves.

Those taking part in each of the sessions will also receive complimentary tickets to a Sale Sharks game alongside family members.

Phil Ball, Community Inclusion Manager at Sale Sharks Foundation, said: “We’re extremely proud to be launching our latest disability and inclusion programme, Tackle Together, as we know how these sessions really can change lives.

“It’s important to us that everyone has the opportunity to be part of the fantastic rugby community, and these sessions will allow those living with disabilities to learn the basics of rugby and make some great friends in the process.

“Without investment from MBNA, we simply wouldn’t be able to activate sessions like these and so we’re really grateful for their continued support.”

Victoria Dowd, Sponsorships Manager at MBNA, said: “We’re delighted to be partnering with such a prestigious rugby club in the north west, working with them to positively impact the lives of young people across the region.

“The sessions have been designed so that we’re able to engage as many young people as possible, whether that’s through mainstream schools learning about disabilities in sport through to giving more access to specialised tag and touch rugby sessions, the Tackle Together programme is a special one and we’re proud to throw our support behind it.”

An apprenticeships firm from Alderley shakes up the status quo at national awards

The AAC Apprenticeship Awards have shortlisted Apprentify for Apprenticeship Provider of the Year

It’s been a strong start to the year for Alderley-Edge based training and apprenticeship provider Apprentify who have made it onto the shortlist in the national AAC Apprenticeship Awards for Apprenticeship Provider of the Year.

The AAC Apprenticeship awards are a celebration of excellence in apprenticeship delivery in the UK. The Awards were established in 2017 as a joint project by FE Week and AELP, with the national awards ceremony taking place at the Annual Apprenticeship Conference Gala Dinner. This year the awards ceremony will take place on the 14th of March at the ICC in Birmingham.

Open to all apprenticeship providers and employers in the UK, the apprenticeship awards are competitive with two types of awards, Route Awards and National Awards. This is a significant result for the relative newcomer, having been shortlisted alongside longstanding providers including established universities and colleges.

Headquartered in Cheshire, Apprentify has almost 300 apprentices mostly studying content production or digital marketing level three apprenticeships. This nomination comes in the wake of a successful Ofsted Report, rating them Outstanding as an education provider.

In the report, apprentices are described as “enthusiastic” and “motivated to succeed” in an environment where staff encourage them to develop a “lifelong love of learning”. The report noted that most apprentices move into promoted posts or take on greater responsibility at the end of their apprenticeship.

Jonathan Fitchew, Apprentify Group chief executive, said: ‘We are delighted to be recognised at a national level on this shortlist, and in the company of such well-established educational institutions. This is proof of our dedication to our apprentices and our educational programmes, and we are looking forward to celebrating at the awards night.’

About Apprentify Group

Apprentify Group is a training and apprenticeship provider for the modern world. Consisting of Apprentify and Netcom Training, the Group empowers people with new digital skills for new and emerging careers.

Vijay Eswaran Highlights the Benefits of QIU’s Unique Approach to Education

0

When it comes to education, the STEM subjects of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics remain ever challenging when considered through a Western lens. And while it’s likely that students struggle with these topics in Eastern classrooms, Asian students continue to perform better than their western counterparts in STEM subjects as well as reading. To achieve this, an emphasis has been historically placed on problem solving skills in addition to learning achievement and performance. The effects of this approach have led to high-performing academics that are less equipped to apply their skills practically in a work environment with practical application.

The same learning models are used the world over in universities that are determined to mill out students who can demonstrate through their test-based mastery of subjects the prowess of the institutions they represent. The result is soaring test scores with fewer individuals able to apply their knowledge in the so-called real world. A recent article highlighting changes in the approach to higher education noted that this approach to teaching can also “dilute students’ imagination, creativity, and sense of self.” Mental health wellness indicators also suffer in the face of pressurized testing environments with careers and incentives on the line.

Quest International University, or QIU, has set out to change all of that. Rather than relying on exams that can benchmark student performance and understanding for educators, QIU has developed a pedagogical model that aims to shift the focus from a test score centric curriculum to one that also encourages and rewards improvement in soft skills and life skills that can make students positive and active contributors to the workplace. QIU’s experiential learning programs have produced over 2,000 graduates representing five different continents.

The learning-by-doing model ties into lectures provided by faculty who are active in their field of study, making lessons and education timely and relevant to all students involved. Practical assistance with career placement is also provided with advice in everything from professional etiquette to job interview skills.

Based in Perak, Malaysia, Quest International University was established in 2011 to address gaps in preparedness and practicality of education throughout the ASEAN region. As a private research university, QIU has a curriculum of programs primarily focused on the STEM disciplines while also offering options for business and social sciences study. Students are encouraged to participate in a holistic education that includes extracurricular activities, clinical training, and technopreneurship experience. Students are encouraged not only to excel in the classroom but also outside of it with specialized dedication to soft skills building and a passion for socio-economic development. The goal is to help guide students through their STEM learning journey in a way that also makes them active contributors to their societies in a positive way.

QIU was founded by Vijay Eswaran, a Malaysian entrepreneur and philanthropist with a personal dedication for improving the world around him. Set on creating the Harvard of the East, Eswaran’s hope is that students will be well-equipped to give back to their communities and improve the quality of life around them by receiving a more holistic approach to their education. Addressing the need for graduates to be prepared to contribute to the workforce after graduation, Quest International University also partners with a variety of employers to give students hand-on experience in their field during their coursework. As a result of this mentorship and training, over 90 percent of QIU’s graduates receive employment offers within a year of completing their studies.

Rather than putting the sole focus on grades and tangible academic performance, a holistic education is one that also concerns itself with helping students evolve emotionally, socially, and ethically. Students are encouraged to learn concepts through practical application and understanding, rather than solely by rote memorization from textbooks. The goal is to produce more well-rounded individuals who understand how and why to put their new skills to use in constructive ways for their employers and their communities. Vijay Eswaran, who is also the chairman of the University Council, explained, “Asian universities tend to focus predominantly on academic learning. We do not need more degree mills; rather, we need to empower students to transform their lives through the lasting power of education. By turning our university into a center of excellence, we hope to have a significant impact on students and their families, as well as on the economy and society as a whole.”

MANCHESTER PUB DONATES £1K TO LOCAL CHARITY FOLLOWING COMMUNITY HERO AWARDS SUCCESS

The Coal & Cotton in Boothstown has donated £1,000 from Coca-Cola to local charity St Anne’s Hospice after being shortlisted in the Community Hero category at this year’s Great British Pub Awards.

James Billson and his staff at The Coal & Cotton made it to the last six in the Community Hero category. All the shortlisted pubs have been awarded funding by category sponsor Coca-Cola, to help them continue with the community work that got them to the final.

Since The Coal & Cotton opened in November 2019, community has been a huge part of everything the pub has done, whether that’s keeping community engagement going through Covid lockdowns with takeaways and food donations, or providing free meals for school children during the holidays.

In lockdown, James and his team introduced ‘Feel Good Fridays’ where the staff would pick a local organisation to donate ten pizzas to. This is what kick-started the pub’s relationship with St Anne’s Hospice.

James chose to donate the prize money to St Anne’s Hospice after learning that the hospice relies on charitable donations. With the cost of running the care home only increasing, and so many locals with friends or relatives receiving support from the hospice, James felt it was the perfect organisation for the money to be donated to.

St Anne’s Hospice helps people across Greater Manchester who are over the age of 18 and affected by life-limiting illnesses, as well as supporting their loved ones and carers.

James Billson, General Manager of The Coal & Cotton commented: “The community is hugely important to us at The Coal & Cotton. We know a lot of our locals have someone close to them that have needed the support and services of St Anne’s Hospice, so it is only right that our prize money went to them.

“It is amazing to have been shortlisted in the Community Hero category at the Great British Pub Awards. We only opened in 2019 and with the various lockdowns of the last couple of years, we haven’t been trading long, but our community has always been our top priority. I look forward to continuing everything we do for both residents and community groups in Boothstown and beyond, with the help of my fantastic team.”

Holly Firmin, Senior Community Partnerships Manager at Coca-Cola added: “It’s been so inspiring to see how pubs have supported local people throughout the pandemic and now in the tough economic climate we’re all experiencing.

“We’re pleased to be helping the team at The Coal & Cotton and the wider community in Boothstown. Funding this donation is our way of saying a huge well done and thank you.”
