Preserving Tradition in a Digital World: Stanislav Kondrashov’s Artistic Exploration

Renowned artist and author Stanislav Kondrashov has unveiled his latest publication, “The Forgotten Art of Calligraphy.” In a world dominated by digital communication, Kondrashov asserts that the ancient art of calligraphy remains a relevant and eloquent means of expression.

Kondrashov embarks on a journey through history to uncover the deep roots of calligraphy, tracing its origins back to various ancient civilisations, including Chinese dynasties, Islamic empires, and Medieval Europe. He emphasises that calligraphy is not merely a form of writing but an art form in its own right. The true beauty of calligraphy, according to Kondrashov, lies in the intricate details. Each stroke, line, and dot is meticulously crafted, resembling a delicate dance of the pen on paper.

In “The Forgotten Art of Calligraphy,” Kondrashov highlights the meditative quality of calligraphy, a practice that demands patience and unwavering focus. This meditative aspect draws artists into a state of mindfulness, connecting them with centuries-old traditions and cultural nuances.

Even in today’s digital age, calligraphy is experiencing a revival. Kondrashov notes that its stylistic elements are evident in various aspects of modern life, from elegant wedding invitations to iconic brand logos. Calligraphy, he emphasises, is a means of individual expression, with each calligrapher infusing their unique personality into their work.

The publication also sheds light on the therapeutic aspects of calligraphy. The deliberate, graceful movements involved in calligraphy can provide a sense of solace and grounding, serving as a form of healing. Kondrashov underscores that calligraphy transcends mere lettering; it is a profound celebration of culture, history, and human creativity. Engaging in calligraphy allows practitioners to explore diverse styles, scripts, and techniques.

Stanislav Kondrashov concludes his publication with a call to action, urging readers to embrace calligraphy and ensure that this exquisite form of writing does not fade into obscurity. Monty Panesar’s Podcast: Delving into His Career and ODI World Cup Prognostications

0

In a captivating and exclusive interview featured on a recent episode of the Matt Haycox Show, former England international cricketer Monty Panesar delved deep into his remarkable cricketing journey. Beyond offering his insights on the upcoming One Day International (ODI) World Cup, Monty took listeners on a nostalgic journey, recounting his debut with the England team and sharing anecdotes about playing alongside the cricketing legends he had always admired. This interview promises a treasure trove of untold stories that cricket fans won’t want to miss.

Monty Panesar reflected on the highs and lows of his cricket career, sharing memorable moments on the pitch and the challenges that defined his illustrious journey.

He warmly reminisced about the cricketing icons from the legendary 2005 Ashes series, stating, “They were heroes to look up to because 2005 Ashes was the turnaround for English cricket, and that’s probably one of the greatest Ashes of all time. It was just unbelievable.”

As Monty transitioned from being a spectator to a player, he described a surreal moment, saying, “And then suddenly, in 2006, I found myself training with them because of the tour to India we had. There was Freddie, showing up at Loughborough Centre with his light blue Man City socks, and these towering figures—it was all so surreal for me.”

Recalling his debut, Monty shared a captivating anecdote, saying, “I remember the night before when Freddie announced the team he was a captain in 2006 in Nagpur. And he goes, ‘number 11’, he put me down. And then I was like, ‘I’m going to be playing tomorrow’. And then I thought, ‘Are you sure about this? Or am I going to be the twelfth man?’ And he goes, ‘No, you’re playing tomorrow.’”

The pinnacle of Monty’s memories undoubtedly was his first test wicket—none other than the legendary Sachin Tendulkar. Monty expressed his profound joy, saying, “My first test wicket, I have got the greatest player out ever who I used to fantasise, watch him all the time.”

“Ask every cricketer, what is it like playing against Sachin Tendulkar, and I’ve got him as my first test wicket. I couldn’t believe it, I was like, ‘This is heaven. I don’t know, I can retire now.’”

After sharing this cherished memory, Monty took a moment to express his deep gratitude to Andrew Flintoff, stating, “Sometimes you have to thank the people like Andrew Flintoff. You know, he backed me. He goes, yeah, I’ll back this guy. There’s something about him, he works hard, he’s got something, I’ll pick him. And next thing, and I’ve got one of the greatest moments in my life, which then put my name into big stardom.”

With the ODI World Cup on the horizon, Monty expressed his optimism about England’s prospects. Reflecting on their commendable performance against New Zealand, Monty believes that England stands as one of the powerhouse teams entering the competition.

“As the tournament kicks off on the 5th of October, England emerges as one of the frontrunners. Not reaching the semifinals would undoubtedly be a letdown, given their current form,” Monty remarked.

When asked about players to watch, Monty highlighted the remarkable Ben Stokes, often hailed as the ‘Superman of Cricket,’ and underscored the pivotal role that Moeen Ali could play in the team’s success. Recognising the importance of spin in India, Monty emphasised, “Moeen’s all-round abilities could prove vital for England.” He also singled out Adil Rashid as a spinner to keep an eye on, highlighting that teams with effective spinners are likely to excel in India.

Monty’s appearance on the Matt Haycox Show underscores his unwavering passion for cricket and his dedication to connecting with fans worldwide. As a stalwart of the cricketing community, Monty Panesar continues to illuminate the sport through his insightful commentary, coaching, and engaging media interactions.

Cricket enthusiasts are encouraged to tune into this enlightening podcast episode to gain a profound understanding of Monty Panesar’s journey and his predictions for the upcoming ODI World Cup. The episode is available on all podcast platforms.

New lease of life for Metro Bank after investment found

Metro Bank has successfully secured its financial future by striking a deal with investors, putting an end to days of speculation about the bank’s stability.

The announcement came on Sunday, following inquiries from the Bank of England to larger lenders about potential interest in acquiring Metro Bank and rumours of other banks eyeing its assets.

Pivotal deal

Metro Bank has secured £325 million in new funding and refinanced £600 million of debt, marking what the bank’s CEO, Daniel Frumkin, referred to as “a new chapter” for the institution.

The news prompted a rebound in Metro Bank’s share price today.

But despite this lifeline, Simon Samuels, a former executive at Barclays and Citi, expressed reservations on the BBC’s Today program.

He suggested that while the financing provides Metro Bank with some breathing space, it does not address the fundamental challenges posed by the bank’s costly strategy of maintaining a significant network of High Street branches in an era of increasing online banking adoption.

Many financial institutions have been closing physical branches and emphasizing online services, a trend accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic. In contrast, Metro Bank remains committed to its brick-and-mortar presence, which Samuels described as unsustainable in terms of cost.

Samuels also claimed that Metro Bank’s long-term prospects of success are slim, suggesting that it may eventually become part of a larger banking group.

Spaldy Investments move in

Under the terms of the deal announced on Sunday, Colombian billionaire Jaime Gilinski Bacal and his firm, Spaldy Investments, will become the largest shareholders of Metro Bank, holding a 53% stake in the bank – worth £102 million.

Founded in 2010 in the aftermath of the financial crisis, Metro Bank positioned itself as a “challenger” to traditional high street banks, promising to keep its branches open seven days a week.

It currently serves 2.7 million customers and holds approximately £15 billion in deposits across 76 branches.

While Metro Bank has consistently maintained that its financial position remains robust and complies with all regulatory requirements, last week’s reports indicated a need to raise £600 million.

Potential bids

Over the weekend, the Financial Times reported that several rival banks were exploring potential bids for parts of Metro Bank’s business.

In addition to the £325 million in capital raised from existing shareholders and new backers, Metro Bank is still in discussions about selling up to £3 billion of its residential mortgages.

Customers with mortgages from Metro Bank will not experience immediate changes, but there is a possibility that some loans may be managed by another bank in the future if a deal materialises.

Birmingham City Sack Head Coach John Eustace

Championship side Birmingham City have sacked manager John Eustace as the West Midlands side sit sixth in the table and in the play-off places.

Eustace side put three past local rivals West Brom on Friday night at St Andrews which saw the side cruise to a 3-1 victory over the Baggies and secure back-to-back wins for the first time since August.

A statement released by the club said:

“It is essential that the board of directors and the football management are fully aligned on the importance of implementing a winning mentality and a culture of ambition across the entire football club.

“With this in mind, Birmingham City has today parted company with head coach John Eustace.

“Eustace departs after 15 months in charge, having helped to stabilise and strengthen the club on the pitch following his appointment in July 2022.

“In his first season at the helm, he guided the team to a 17th-place finish, securing Sky Bet Championship status with three games remaining. During his time at St. Andrew’s, he galvanised the squad to deliver a number of memorable moments in testing circumstances.

“The club would like to thank John for his contribution. His dedication and work ethic was evident throughout his time in B9, and he will always be welcomed back to St. Andrew’s.

“A new first team manager will be announced in the coming days who will be responsible for creating an identity and clear ‘no fear’ playing style that all Birmingham City teams will adopt and embrace.

“The club will be issuing no further comment at this time.”

F1: FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem wants less races and more teams ahead of 24 races in 2024

“Saying no to a team approved by the FIA is hard”, says the president of the FIA Mohammed Ben Sulayem, as he speaks out in support of more teams joining the grid after giving Andretti the green light, subject to approval from Formula One.

As the 2024 race calendar is set to provide fans with the excitement of 24 races in the F1 season, Sulayem is against the idea of expanding the racing calendar and instead, his focus is on expanding the grid and filling the 12 team slots. With the other 10 teams on the grid also opposing the idea based on financial grounds, Sulayem told Reuters:

“Saying no to a team which has been approved by the FIA – it’s very hard.

If you say: ‘What is my dream?’ It is to fill up the 12 [team slots] and to have one US team from an OEM [original equipment manufacturer] and a [power unit] and a driver from there.

“And then go to China maybe and ask for the same thing and do it.”

It is not just the sharing of the prize pot that concerns the existing teams on the grid but that of certain circuits, such as Zandvoort and Monaco not having the garage capacity to house any more teams.

However, the president seems set on filling up those two remaining spaces on the grid and, in response to the lack of sufficient garage space, pointed out the filming of Brad Pitt’s F1 movie, which has been filmed at some races this season:

“We are allowed to have 12 teams [in the rules].

“Some of the teams said, ‘Oh, it will be crowded’. Really? We are already running a Hollywood team with us!

“The circuits are supposed to have enough garages and space for 12 teams.

“I think the number of races is too much [rather] than the number of teams. We need more teams and fewer races.

“The teams are looking at the piece of cake. I understand their worries… but our worries are different.”

North West fitness entrepreneurs announce £0.5 million gym expansion

Two of the region’s leading fitness entrepreneurs have announced the expansion of their Pro-Fit gym concept just 12 months after launch.

Their second dedicated facility will open in Middlebrook, Bolton at the end of October following a £500,000 investment.

Originally founded as Easyfit in 2002, Graham Webb and Steve Butters have been at the forefront of the fitness industry in the North West for the past 20 years managing personal training services in gyms across the region including Energie Fitness Club in Wilmslow, The Bolton Arena, Gym Etc, and Total Fitness Health Club.

The business, now called Pro-Fit, is one of the biggest networks of personal trainers in the UK, leading some of the top trainers in the country.

Last September, Webb and Butters announced the launch of Pro-Fit’s first dedicated gym facility – a state-of-the-art personal training gym in Preston.

After growing the membership base to more than 250 in just 12 months, the pair has announced plans to open the doors to a second half a million pound, 10,000sqft training space in Greater Manchester later this month.

Graham said: “After working in the industry for 20+ years we always knew that when the time was right to open our own gym we would be able to create something truly unique for members that we felt was currently missing in the North West.

“Pro-Fit gyms are built around community and comradery. Our members are like family – we’ve created a supportive and inclusive environment where people train together at all levels. There are no egos and no intimidation.

“After a phenomenal first 12 months in Preston, our second gym will be opening its doors in Middlebrook, Bolton on October 23 as the next stage in our expansion programme. We’ve invested £500,000 into creating a state-of-the-art training facility that doesn’t currently exist in the local area. We will be launching with around 50 founder members and have ambitious plans to grow the membership base.

“The cost of living crisis is undoubtedly having an impact on the fitness industry. But this is where gyms like ours are really coming into their own. People are looking for more than a soulless identikit gym chain. They want a sense of community; to build friendships and to feel part of something. Our PTs know every single one of our members by name and genuinely care about what is going on in their lives. It is these relationships that help set us apart and deliver some amazing results for our members.”

Portugal coach Lagisquet delighted to bow out with historic win

0

Coach Patrice Lagisquet hailed his “incredible” Portugal team following their historic, last-gasp World Cup win over Fiji.

Rodrigo Marta’s late try, converted by Samuel Marques, saw the Portuguese home 24-23 – handing the country their first win at a World Cup – although Fiji still managed to advance to a quarter-final with England after securing a bonus point.

Former France winger Lagisquet, for whom it was a final match in charge, could not have been prouder.

He said: “It’s unbelievable, the players always find resources I never expect.

“The way they could score [so late], it’s amazing. Even if we work hard to be able to do things like that, they still surprise me after four years. It’s an incredible group, an incredible team full of really talented players.

“It couldn’t be better [to leave with a win]. I am so lucky to train a squad like this one. I am so lucky to finish with this victory, it’s a great moment.”

Fiji coach Simon Raiwalui was disappointed with his side’s performance and conceded the better team won on the night.

“Congratulations to Portugal, they played really well, stuck in there once we took the lead,” he said.

“We thought we had it, but they scored the try. A fully deserved victory to them.

“We dropped too much ball. We were a bit tight in the context of the game. We created lots of opportunities but we just didn’t throw the ball out to our outside backs.”

Raiwalui’s men will have a week to rest before facing England and know a much-improved performance is required.

We’re going to have to rest and recover,” he said.

“England are a very good tournament team and we’re expecting a tough game. We’ll regroup, review and then get on to England.”

Computer Monitors and Screens: LED vs. LCD: Which One Is Better?

0

In today’s digital age, computer monitors are crucial in our daily lives. Whether you’re working on a project, gaming, watching videos, or simply browsing the internet, the type of monitor you use can significantly impact your overall experience. Among the many factors to consider when choosing a monitor, one crucial decision is whether to opt for LED (light-emitting diode) or LCD (liquid crystal display) technology. In this comprehensive guide, we will delve into the key differences between LED and LCD monitors to help you decide which one is better suited to your needs.

Understanding the Basics

Before we dive into the LED vs. LCD comparison, it’s essential to understand the fundamentals of each technology.

Liquid Crystal Display (LCD)

LCD monitors have been a staple in the display industry for years. They use a backlight source (usually fluorescent lamps) to illuminate liquid crystals. These liquid crystals can be manipulated to allow or block light, creating the images you see on the screen. LCDs are known for their colour accuracy and crisp visuals.

Light Emitting Diode (LED)

LED monitors, on the other hand, use light-emitting diodes to provide illumination. These diodes are often arranged in an array behind the screen and emit light directly. LED technology offers several advantages, including energy efficiency and thinner monitor designs.

The Battle of the Displays: LED vs. LCD

Now that we have a basic understanding of both technologies let’s explore the key differences between LED and LCD monitors and which might be better for your specific needs.

Picture quality

LCD: LCD monitors are renowned for their colour accuracy and high-quality image reproduction. They provide vibrant colours and sharp contrasts, making them an excellent choice for tasks that require precise colour rendering, such as graphic design and photo editing. However, LCDs can struggle with displaying true blacks due to the limitations of the backlight technology.

LED: LED monitors often offer comparable picture quality to LCDs, but they have an advantage regarding contrast ratios. LEDs can be dimmed or turned off individually, allowing for deeper blacks and improved contrast. LED monitors are popular for watching movies and playing video games with dynamic visuals.

Energy Efficiency

LCD: LCD monitors are generally less energy-efficient compared to LED monitors. LCDs rely on fluorescent lamps for backlighting, which can consume more power, especially on larger screens. While newer LCD models have improved energy efficiency, they still lag behind LEDs in this aspect.

LED: LED monitors are known for their energy efficiency. LED technology consumes less power, reducing electricity bills and a smaller carbon footprint. If environmental concerns and energy savings are essential to you, LED monitors are the way to go.

Thickness and Design

LCD: LCD monitors are typically bulkier and heavier due to the backlighting system. This can make them less aesthetically pleasing and less convenient for those who value slim and stylish monitor designs.

LED: LED monitors are known for their slim and sleek designs. Since LEDs are smaller and thinner than traditional fluorescent lamps, LED monitors can be much thinner and more lightweight. This makes them an excellent choice for modern and minimalist setups.

Lifespan and Durability

LCD: The backlight source (fluorescent lamps) is primarily responsible for determining the lifespan of LCD monitors. Over time, these lamps can dim and require replacement, which can be costly. LCD screens are also more susceptible to impact damage due to their thicker build.

LED: LED monitors generally have a longer lifespan than LCDs. LEDs can last tens of thousands of hours, providing consistent brightness throughout their lives. Additionally, LED monitors are more durable because they are thinner and have fewer fragile components, making them more resistant to physical damage.

Price Point

LCD: LCD monitors are often more budget-friendly than LED monitors. If you are on a tight budget and prioritise cost-effectiveness, an LCD monitor might be suitable.

LED: LED monitors are slightly more expensive than their LCD counterparts, primarily due to their energy efficiency and slim design. However, the advantages they provide regarding picture quality and durability frequently justify the price difference.

Working:

  • LCD: Utilises a backlight source (usually fluorescent lamps) to illuminate liquid crystals, which control the passage of light to create images on the screen.
  • LED: Uses light-emitting diodes (LEDs) directly behind the screen to emit light, enabling image creation.

Backlighting:

  • LCD: Relies on traditional backlighting systems, such as fluorescent lamps, which can result in limited control over individual pixels.
  • LED: employs individual LEDs that can be dimmed or turned off independently, providing better control over brightness and contrast.

Viewing angles:

  • LCDs generally have narrower viewing angles, which can lead to colour and contrast distortion when viewed from extreme angles.
  • LED: Offers improved viewing angles with less colour and contrast distortion, making it better for wider viewing scenarios.

Application to Video Walls:

  • LCD: A traditional choice for video walls due to availability and affordability.
  • LEDs are gaining popularity in video walls for their better brightness, durability, and flexibility in shaping larger displays.

Gaming Application:

  • LCD: Suitable for gaming but may exhibit motion blur and slightly higher input lag in some models.
  • LED: Often preferred for gaming due to faster response times, higher refresh rates, and better contrast ratios, enhancing the gaming experience.

Environmental friendliness:

  • LCD: Generally less environmentally friendly due to fluorescent lamps in backlighting, which consumes more power.
  • LEDs are more environmentally friendly as they consume less power, leading to reduced electricity bills and a smaller carbon footprint.

Shelf Life:

  • LCD: Over time, expensive replacements may be necessary because the backlight source (fluorescent lamps) primarily determines the lifespan of LCD monitors.
  • LEDs typically have a longer lifespan, lasting tens of thousands of hours, with consistent brightness throughout their lives.

Differences in Size and Shape:

  • LCD tends to be bulkier and heavier due to the traditional backlighting system, resulting in thicker designs.
  • LED: Known for their slim and sleek designs due to the smaller and thinner LED backlighting, making them ideal for modern, minimalist setups.

Remember that the choice between LED and LCD monitors should be based on your needs and priorities, considering factors such as picture quality, energy efficiency, design, durability, and budget. Both technologies have their merits and can provide excellent visual experiences for various computing needs.

Making Your Choice

When choosing between LED and LCD monitors, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. Your decision should be based on your specific needs and priorities. Here are some scenarios to help you make the right choice:

  • Choose an LCD monitor if:
  • You have a limited budget and want an affordable option.
  • Colour accuracy and image quality are not your primary concerns.
  • You don’t mind a slightly bulkier monitor design.
  • Choose an LED monitor if:
  • You value energy efficiency and want to reduce your electricity costs.
  • You prioritise a slim and modern monitor design that complements your workspace.
  • Contrast ratios and vibrant visuals are essential for your tasks, such as gaming and media consumption.

Chair of Manchester Children’s Hospice Retires after 31 Years of Service

*Manchester, UK – After an incredible 31-year journey as a trustee at Francis House Children’s Hospice, Chris Roberts has announced his retirement from his role as Chair. The news, which was confirmed at a trustee meeting on October 5, marks the end of an era for this beloved institution dedicated to supporting children with life-limiting conditions and their families.

Mr. Roberts joined Francis House in 1992, initially as a trustee, but he quickly became an integral part of the organization. In 2014, he assumed the role of Chair, succeeding Robin Wood after his retirement. His tenure as Chair spanned nine years, during which he presided over a period of remarkable growth and development within the hospice.

Established in 1990, Francis House was created to provide vital support to the families of children with life-limiting conditions throughout Greater Manchester. It opened its doors in 1991, becoming only the fifth children’s hospice to be constructed in the entire United Kingdom.

One of the most significant achievements during Chris Roberts’ leadership was the development of two residential properties intended to serve as permanent residences for young people with life-limiting or life-threatening conditions. These groundbreaking projects, located in Didsbury and Heaton Moor and operated by Francis House Families Ltd, offer a comfortable and supportive living environment to a dozen young individuals.

With Chris Roberts stepping down as Chair, Jane Kempler has been elected as the new Chair to lead the organization forward. Ms. Kempler joined the board of trustees in 2020 after retiring from a corporate career with extensive experience in operational management of call centers, sales, and customer service.

Reflecting on his tenure, Chris Roberts said, “It has been an honor and a privilege to be involved at Francis House. The devotion of the staff to the young people and their parents is inspirational to say the least.” He recalled his first impression of the hospice, where he witnessed the spirit and joy of a young girl named Kirsty Howard, whose experience embodied the essence of Francis House. He praised the hospice’s unique ability to provide a service that cannot be found elsewhere.

Acknowledging the contributions of others, Chris Roberts extended his gratitude to David Ireland and his team for their vision and hard work, as well as to the staff, young individuals, and volunteers who have made Francis House a truly wonderful place. He also thanked the fellow trustees, including Martin Lochery, who is retiring alongside him.

Jane Kempler, the incoming Chair, expressed her gratitude to Chris Roberts for his years of service and mentorship. She emphasized the diverse levels of care that Francis House provides, ranging from clinical to emotional, psychological, and spiritual support. Jane looks forward to working with the Francis House team and her fellow trustees in guiding the hospice through its next phase.

David Ireland, Chief Executive of Francis House, acknowledged the immense contributions of both Chris Roberts and Martin Lochery to the organization. He commended their wise advice and unwavering support throughout the years and wished them long and healthy retirements.

As Francis House embarks on the next phase of its history under the leadership of Jane Kempler, the hospice continues to play a crucial role in the community, providing comprehensive care to families in need.
