A Grandparent’s Story Inspires the Launch of a New Netflix-Style Business

Krish Patel (31) was so inspired by his grandparents’ story that it motivated him and
his family friend, Tom Daly (23) to launch Netflix-style video biography
service, StoryOak.

In 2019, Krish Patel’s nearly lost the chance to learn about his grandfather’s life in more depth when his Grandfather passed away. After months of reminiscing with his Grandmother and looking through copious photo albums, Krish longed for the opportunity to see and hear his Grandad once again.

Krish and Tom then decided to interview Krish’s Grandmother, creating a Netflix-
style video which brought to life the Grandparent’s unique love story once again.
Krish gifted this to his family at Christmas and after seeing their reaction, the
StoryOak brand was born.

Founder, Krish Patel explains the personal reasons behind the business, “After my
Grandad passed away I regretted not asking him about his life, his loves and his
passions and I knew there had to be people out there that thought the same about
their loved ones. When I interviewed my Grandma I found out so many amazing
stories about their teenage love story, from meeting at a paper shop my Great
Grandparents managed, to my 14 year old Grandad cycling from Blackpool to
Darwen only to find out that my Grandma wasn’t home. As soon as I watched these
treasured memories unfold, I realised we had something really special.”
Tom Daly, Founder said, “It was fascinating to interview Krish’s Grandma and we
know there are so many other people across the country trying to find an outlet to
share their stories too.

“I’m really passionate about video and I’ve always loved the interview aspect of
creating captivating videos, so when Krish posed the idea of creating a video
biography service, for me it was a no brainer. We can’t wait to bring these stories to
life and help as many people as possible create their own unique lasting legacy.”

Based in Bolton, StoryOak offers a bespoke and experience-driven service aimed at
anyone who wants to share their story. From CEOs looking to share their journey
through business to those simply wanting to bring to life cherished memories and
leave a lasting legacy for their loved ones, StoryOak has a range of packages,
catering for anyone across the UK.

To support the fledgling business, the founders have enrolled in the Natwest
Entrepreneur Accelerator Programme, which supports entrepreneurs at various
stages of their journey. The initial six months within the programme has supported
the duo with specialist seminars and workshops, enabled access to a 24 hour work
space at a Manchester City Centre office, a business coach to support with strategy
and accountability and the opportunity to network with the other 60 entrepreneurs
on the programme.

To date, the founders have invested a total of £30,000 to launch the business.
Established in 2023 by Krish Patel and Tom Daly, StoryOak captures Netflix-style
video biographies ranging from notable CEOs to inspiring seniors across the UK.

Lovell Reveals Record Profits in Latest Financial Results

0

In today’s year-end figures, Lovell partnership housing specialist announced a profit of £37.4 million. Up 12.7% compared with last year, these results have made a significant contribution to the overall performance of parent company Morgan Sindall Group plc, whose impressive year-end financial results were also unveiled earlier this morning.

The Group delivered a strong performance in 2022, with significant strategic and operational progress made across the business despite the market headwinds. The results were another record for the Group and reflected the high quality of the Group’s operations and the talent and commitment of its people.

Group revenue increased by 12% up to £3,612m while adjusted* profit before tax increased 7% to £136.2m.  The Group’s balance sheet remains strong with net cash of £355m, and with a high-quality secured workload of £8.5bn, the Group is looking forward with optimism.

*Before exceptional building safety charge of £48.9m and intangible amortisation of £2.0m

Lovell has achieved significantly strong financial results with revenue up 22% to nearly £700m (FY 2021: £572m).  Operating profit of £37.4m was up 12.7% on the prior year (FY 2021: £33.2m), along with an excellent Return on Capital Employed of 19%.  The secured order book at the year-end was £3.4bn, representing a 23% improvement on last year’s position and a clear reflection of the successful strategic growth and partnership model.

Lovell area managing director for the NorthDavid Ward says: “2022 has seen us deliver record financial results with strong growth achieved in revenue and profits across the board. Throughout both mixed tenure and contracting activities, we’ve increased the volume of units completed to almost 4,000 (YE 2021: 3,000) whilst also increasing our ongoing portfolio of long-term joint ventures and contracting schemes.

“The year end results are fantastic, especially given the continued turbulence in the UK economy and the wider landscape of construction material shortages, inflationary cost increases and slow planning progression in parts of the UK. Our success is undoubtedly testament to the ongoing strength and commitment of the entire Lovell team, our supply chain and our partners who work relentlessly to achieve our ambitions.

“As we enter an even more challenging time for the housing industry, it is pleasing to know that our partnership model offers us some protection from projected market conditions.”

Lovell is working on key projects including:

This strategic JV has created a strong partnership with the potential to deliver more schemes across the North West in the near future.

The Gateway, the penultimate development of Lovell’s ten-year regeneration in Miles Platting, has sold exceptionally well and has recently released its apartments for sale. Saxon Square, the final scheme on this landmark development, has started on site and will deliver 28 popular townhouses in this key location.

4 Signs that You Should Change Business Water Supplier

0

Since April 2017, business owners can freely switch business water suppliers if they spot a better deal. The process is simple, too and can often be done in a few simple steps in a matter of minutes.

This has resulted in more business owners keeping a fine eye out for any mistreatment or poor service, and rightly so.

This guide will highlight four signs of changing your business water supplier. Read on to determine if your business could benefit from a new supplier.

  • Insufficient Water Treatment Service

As part of having a business water supplier, you should have access to a prompt and sufficient chemical water treatment service. This means they are responsible for cleaning, disinfecting, and purifying all your water for various purposes.

Many suppliers waste companies’ time and money by not providing a good enough service, which can badly affect the safe disposal of water and district machinery.

Whether water is used in boilers, cooling towers or other machinery, the wastewater must be efficiently managed and monitored to be safely disposed of.

Some warning signs to look out for that your service may not be adequate are:

  • Discoloured or cloudy water: If the water appears cloudy or discoloured, it may indicate that the impurities are not being removed properly.
  • Bad smell: If you notice the water being used smells off, it could indicate the presence of bacteria.
  • Frequent machine failure: For machines that rely on water, if you notice them breaking down or not functioning properly, it could indicate that the water is not being treated properly.
  • Scale buildup and corrosion: If you notice any pipework or machinery with a lot of corrosion, it could be that the water is not treated properly and is eroding the metalwork.

If you notice any of these signs in your business premises, it may be time to switch business water suppliers.

  • Poor Customer Service

It goes for any service you might buy; if the customer service experience isn’t good, it reflects on the company. A few signs that you may be getting a poor customer service experience might include the following:

  • Long wait times or constantly on hold for inquiries
  • Rudeness or a lack of care towards your needs
  • A lack of follow-ups or follow-through
  • A lack of willingness to go above and beyond to help you
  • Poor accessibility

This only scratches the surface of what poor customer service might look like. In general, you will have a strong natural inclination if you are being poorly treated, and if so, it may be time to switch.

It would help if you always looked to websites like Trustpilot to see how other customers are treated and whether it is best to avoid a specific business water provider.

  • Inconsistent and Expensive Billing

If you notice inconsistencies in your monthly water bill or spot any sharp spikes in costs, you may receive poor bills from your provider.

Your monthly bill should be clear and easy to understand where your money is going, and it should clearly state the cost of the water usage as well as any other additional charges, such as wastewater or stormwater fees.

A clear bill will help you, as the customer, to identify any errors, usage patterns, and conservation opportunities. You need to reconsider your options if you aren’t getting this information.

If you notice any sharp spikes that aren’t being brought to your attention, this is a clear red flag that you are not being provided with the service you deserve.

  • Lack of Additional Services

Your business water provider should always look for new ways to help your business drive down costs. To help with this, many suppliers offer additional services like:

  • Leak detection: Regular repair checkups to ensure no leaks on the premises or anything that could drain excess water.
  • Emergency response: A quick restoration service is available 24/7 in the case of an emergency.
  • Regular water testing: Frequent monitoring of the quality of your water to ensure safety and compliance with regulations.
  • Water conservation systems/treatment: Regular onsite water treatment to point out any opportunities for saving money and water.

These are a few examples of what business water suppliers might offer as part of their service. If you notice a lack of additional services with your current supplier, consider swapping the provider for someone more reputable.

In Summary

There are many warning signs to be aware of when looking for an efficient business water supplier. This guide has explored the most common examples you should be aware of.

Every business will have specific needs and circumstances that need to be met; it’s important to ensure that your business’s requirements align with your provider. If not, you should be looking for better options.

4 Reasons Your Business Needs a Trustworthy Accountant

0

There’s always a mastermind behind every successful business. However, business needs something more than passion; it is a trustworthy team of employees that work relentlessly to bring you success.   Therefore, an entrepreneur must find a reliable accountant to comply with laws and regulations, save money and time, reduce risk and manage growth, besides hiring other loyal staff.

Many small business entrepreneurs in the UK struggle with their financial management systems but feel that hiring an accountant is a money burner. An accountant is a professional with years of experience working in your industry. They can develop the best solutions, maintain compliance, and structure your growth.

However, a question comes up about why to hire a trustworthy accountant in your business. Let us see the reasons in the latter part of the article.

4 reasons for hiring a trustworthy accountant for your business

Similar to other industries, the domain of accounting has several fraudsters. Moreover, the term “accountant” is not legally protected, and anyone with little numeric skills can use it without breaking the law. Business owners need to guard and select an experienced and certified professional to fit their organisation and avoid unnecessary issues.

Claim your deductions and file tax correctly.

An accounting firm in West London must know about the legal compliance at the local, state, or federal levels, which means they understand your tax deductions. While an inexperienced accountant knows only basic tax deductions, an experienced one can help you claim everything you are eligible for, saving money in your pocket.

No one prefers paying extra taxes, and it becomes an opportunity for fake accountants to suggest ways to reduce tax amounts illegally. These may result in hefty penalties.

However, certain tax deductions for entrepreneurs in the UK can reduce your tax obligations without hampering regulations. HMRC introduced several tax relief schemes for supporting small to medium-sized businesses. When an accountant assures you of knowing these reductions and their criteria, you are working with the right person who can help you save money.

Make sure you file tax returns on time every financial year and avoid penalties. A trustworthy accountant will support you in understanding your tax obligations, your financial year, tax deadlines and other regulations.

Avoid an audit

An accountant or Internal auditor is a professional who can deduce valuable insights from your financial data and help you avoid the dreaded audits. For example, if you are claiming from HMRC something you are not allowed to, you create risks of audit and potential penalties.

These experts help you make the best financial decisions possible for your business. They have the right skills, expertise, knowledge and tools to work with clients and help them find the best solutions for any problem or challenges.

Strengthen and grow your business

A most business fails due to poor financial planning. You need to look for an accountant who can help you record transactions correctly and prepare financial statements that visualise the financial health of your business. A trustworthy accountant will provide you with unbiased advice on your opportunities and risks.

A growing business has numerous requirements like funding, managing cash flow, improving customer relationships, etc. An accountant takes over your business’s financial and tax obligations and introduces financial tools that help you save time and money.

Saves time

As a company owner, you have a lot to worry about, and keeping your business finance up to date and organised becomes challenging. You hand over these tasks to an in-house accountant or outsource them. If the accountant is a fraud and tampers with your business data, employee details, and other vital information? This is why you need to hire a trustworthy accountant who is loyal and understands your business as you do.

Entrepreneurs with tight budgets won’t be able to afford an in-house accountant but wonder how much time and effort you spend on managing finance yourself. Are you worthy of the possible errors or losses due to poor financial decisions? Invest in a professional accountant who can assist you in maintaining business finances, save money and time, and help you reach your business goals.

Conclusion

There are several reasons you need to hire a trustworthy Self-Assessment Tax Return accountant for your business. Ask for their tax identification number, check online directories, ask about memberships and certifications, and look into client feedback. Never miss out on a face-to-face interview before hiring an accountant, and ensure they answer all your questions correctly. A wrong individual can charge you fewer fees and promise more but can never fulfil your requirements resulting in costly blunders.

Genprex Announces Groundbreaking Data from Non-Human Primate Study Evaluating Novel Gene Therapy to Treat Type 1 Diabetes at 16th Annual International Conference on Advanced Technologies & Treatment for Diabetes 2023

0
  • Results show statistically significant decreases in insulin requirements, increases in c-peptide levels and improvements in glucose tolerance compared to baseline
  • Disruptive gene therapy approach developed by University of Pittsburgh researchers may be a promising treatment for Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes

Genprex, Inc. (NASDAQ: GNPX), a clinical-stage gene therapy company focused on developing life-changing therapies for patients with cancer and diabetes, today announced that data highlighting the potential of Genprex’s gene therapy for Type 1 diabetes is being presented by its research collaborators at the University of Pittsburgh (Pitt) at the 16th International Conference on Advanced Technologies & Treatments for Diabetes (ATTD 2023) taking place February 22-25, 2023 in Berlin, Germany.

On the left is Dr. Mark Berger, Chief Medical Officer & Thomas Gallagher, Esq, Senior Vice President
On the left is Dr. Mark Berger, Chief Medical Officer & Thomas Gallagher, Esq, Senior Vice President

The abstract data were released, and the presentation will be delivered on February 25th at 2:25 pm CET by Ranjeet S. Kalsi, DO, a member of the laboratory of George Gittes, MD, from Pitt’s Division of Pediatric Surgery, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The complete presentation will be available on the Company’s website here following the close of Dr. Kalsi’s presentation.

The presentation titled, “Pancreatic Intraductal Infusion of Adeno-Associated Virus (AAV) to Treat Non-Human Primates in a Toxin-Induced Diabetes Model,” will report results from eight non-human primates (NHPs) with toxin-induced diabetes after streptozocin administration. They received a novel infusion process that used an AAV vector to deliver Pdx1 and MafA genes directly to the pancreas.

“These results are compelling as they demonstrate the potential for this gene therapy to create newly formed beta-like cells that can produce insulin. They also validate earlier studies of this approach in diabetic mouse models that showed restoration of normal blood glucose levels for several months,” stated Mark Berger, MD, Chief Medical Officer of Genprex. “We are eager to continue working to advance this gene therapy into human clinical trials in order to replicate these outcomes in people and potentially provide long-term replacement of beta-cells.”

Genprex logo

The statistically significant study results show that post-infusion of the AAV engineered construct, the eight NHPs had “decreased insulin requirements (p<0.001); increased c-peptide levels (p<0.05); and improved glucose tolerance compared to baseline (p<0.05) with one demonstrating reestablished normoglycemia. Immunohistochemistry revealed insulin and glucagon staining, which suggest the formation of insulin-producing cells.”

The diabetes technologies licensed from Pitt by Genprex were developed in the laboratory of George Gittes, MD, Professor of Surgery and Pediatrics and Chief of the Division of Pediatric Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. “We are delighted with the statistically significant outcomes from this NHP study in Type-1 diabetes as it further supports our thesis on the potential of our gene therapy approach in diabetes. Importantly, it shows a positive data progression from our earlier mouse model data to these NHP data,” noted Dr. Gittes.

“These promising data are very encouraging and further support our belief that this gene therapy approach to treating diabetes has the potential to change the course of the disease in both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes,” said Rodney Varner, President and Chief Executive Officer of Genprex. “Based on data from a number of preclinical in vivo studies, we are encouraged that our novel gene therapy approach could provide long-term efficacy in humans potentially making exogenous insulin unnecessary, which would be a gamechanger for the 537 million people around the world living with diabetes.”

About Genprex, Inc.

Genprex, Inc. is a clinical-stage gene therapy company focused on developing life-changing therapies for patients with cancer and diabetes. Genprex’s technologies are designed to administer disease-fighting genes to provide new therapies for large patient populations with cancer and diabetes who currently have limited treatment options. Genprex works with world-class institutions and collaborators to develop drug candidates to further its pipeline of gene therapies in order to provide novel treatment approaches. Genprex’s oncology program utilizes its proprietary, non-viral ONCOPREX® Nanoparticle Delivery System, which the Company believes is the first systemic gene therapy delivery platform used for cancer in humans. ONCOPREX encapsulates the gene-expressing plasmids using lipid nanoparticles. The resultant product is administered intravenously, where it is then taken up by tumor cells that express tumor suppressor proteins that are deficient in the body. The Company’s lead product candidate, REQORSA® (quaratusugene ozeplasmid), is being evaluated in three clinical trials as a treatment for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and small cell lung cancer (SCLC). Both NSCLC clinical programs received a Fast Track Designation from the Food and Drug Administration. Genprex’s diabetes gene therapy approach is comprised of a novel infusion process that uses an endoscope and an adeno-associated virus (AAV) vector to deliver Pdx1 and MafA genes directly to the pancreas. In models of Type 1 diabetes, GPX-002 transforms alpha cells in the pancreas into functional beta-like cells, which can produce insulin but are distinct enough from beta cells to evade the body’s immune system. In a similar approach, GPX-003 for Type 2 diabetes, where autoimmunity is not at play, is believed to rejuvenate and replenish exhausted beta cells.
