UK Retailers Push For Sustainability

0

One of the most influential areas to affect the British economy, retail businesses, are moving towards implementing more eco-friendly and sustainable practices to reduce their carbon footprint.

Why is sustainability in retail so important?

As one of the leading industries in the UK, retail has really boomed and can include everything from furniture and skincare to designer mens t shirts and even online marketplaces.

However, it also contributes to a number of issues, such as climate change and pollution. To combat this, businesses are taking a proactive approach towards sustainability now more than ever before.

Sustainability Summit

A few months ago, a Sustainability Summit was hosted in London, and several different brands were invited to attend the inspiring and practical solution-led sessions on how to become more sustainable and implement them into everyday business practices.

Various major fashion and lifestyle brands were just a few of the names that attended, among an impressive 60 other brands that wished to educate themselves on sustainability practices they could implement in retail.

Sustainable packaging

One of the ways that we can see has been implemented quite widely already across businesses is the push to use more eco-friendly packaging. The harmful effects of plastic waste on the environment are quite well known. On the positive side, alternative packaging options have become more widely available and more affordable for even small companies to use.

Paper bags — or reusable ‘bags for life’ — are now a common option that consumers can buy from retailers. Reusable bags are also made out of materials such as cotton or jute instead of plastic. Some companies are even using cornstarch-based biodegradable packaging, meaning it will not leave a long-term negative impact on the environment. Mars confectionaries have, for instance, decided to stop using plastic wrappers in favour of paper wrappers moving forward.

Some companies have implemented sustainable packaging for quite a few years, with beauty brands using compostable packaging since as early as 2009.

Ethical sourcing practices

Another way in which we see retail businesses work towards sustainability is through their sourcing practices and pushing to become more ethical in them.

More and more retailers are looking for suppliers who can source products ethically and sustainably in order to reduce the overall environmental impact. This can range from fair wages for workers to using Fair Trade materials and ingredients. Thanks to those brands ‘ Fair Trade stickers, consumers can also spot these products easily on the final product. Some beauty brands have become the first ever to be fair trade certified. This is something they can actively market to customers to keep the fashion economy running, keeping sustainability at the forefront.

Some businesses are working alongside suppliers to implement sustainable sourcing and have programmes in place to teach them how best to do so. Some grocery stores, for instance, have a Sustainable Agriculture team which is responsible for teaching suppliers how to be more sustainable in their everyday practices, and their commitment to sourcing 100% sustainable cocoa is evidence of this.

Being energy efficient

It might not seem like an obvious choice, but being energy efficient is also a big part of moving towards environmental sustainability. In pursuit of reducing energy use and associated costs, businesses are beginning to note their energy consumption habits and make changes accordingly.

Many businesses are opting for LED lighting, which uses much less energy than traditional lights. To make it even more eco-friendly, sensors are sometimes used in infrequently used rooms so that the lights turn off automatically to reduce waste.

Renewable energy sources are also something that retailers have been looking into, and solar panels or wind turbines have been options that some brands have implemented in order to power their stores and sometimes even their offices.

Building awareness

Apart from just implementing sustainable practices into the running of the business, it is also important to build awareness among consumers as well. Buzzwords such as ‘sustainable’ or ‘eco-friendly’ can be heard and seen more commonly on retail websites, product packaging, and stores.

In-store displays and social media have been great ways to raise awareness, market, and promote any new sustainable practices a brand has implemented. This enables customers to keep up-to-date and encourages them to join in and make sustainable choices for themselves.

What does this mean for the future?

From what we’ve discussed here, retailers in the UK are taking steps in the right direction and have made significant progress in not only committing to becoming more sustainable but actually implementing sustainability practices into their businesses as well.

Swapping packaging so it’s more eco-friendly, delivering parcels in vans that are 100% electric, and even attending events such as the Sustainability Summit, or partnering with environmental organisations, are all evidence of wanting to improve and change for the better.

The Top Cloud-Based Sales Forecasting Tools for Remote Teams

0

Sales forecasting is a vital tool for today’s businesses. It helps in setting goals, allocating resources efficiently, making informed decisions, and evaluating enterprise performance. By making forecasts, you can reduce risks, attract investors, and reach a new business level in a dynamic market environment.

What is a sales forecast, and who makes it?

What is a sales forecast in a business plan? It is a document that contains information about potential sales and income that a company may receive in the future. As a rule, it is created by the joint efforts of sellers, sales managers, marketers, finance department, and business analysts.

Using historical data, market analysis, and practical experience, all stakeholders jointly assess the likelihood of a certain level of sales and make strategic decisions based on this data.

Sales Forecast: Role in Business Development

Sales forecasting is of particular importance to businesses in any industry. Implementation of this tool into daily practice allows you to achieve the following results.

  1. Improving planning and goal setting. A sales forecast helps businesses set realistic goals and tailor their operations to reach them in the shortest time possible. It represents a roadmap for the company’s development and optimizes resource allocation.
  2. Effective financial management. Sales forecasts help with financial planning, budgeting, and managing daily cash flows. With their help, it is easier and more convenient to evaluate income and project costs for making informed financial decisions.
  3. Resource optimization. By predicting sales, businesses can optimize inventory, production capacity, and personnel. In this way, it will be possible to prevent shortages and surpluses, minimize costs, and increase work efficiency.
  4. Weighted decision-making. Sales forecasts provide all the information you need to make strategic decisions. They help entrepreneurs assess the market situation, current opportunities, and risks to develop effective sales strategies.
  5. Assessment of enterprise efficiency. By comparing actual sales with potential sales, companies can evaluate their performance and identify areas for improvement. It allows you to comply with the developed business strategies or, in case of deviation from the set course, quickly adjust the activities of departments and employees.
  6. Risk reduction. Sales forecasts help companies detect potential force majeure and predict market fluctuations. This opportunity is valuable for managing risk and developing plans to respond to unforeseen circumstances.
  7. Increasing investor confidence. Reliable and regularly updated sales forecasts enhance the loyalty of actual and potential investors. They demonstrate the responsibility of the top management and the soundness of the developed growth strategy. Thus, sales forecasting provides assurance and attracts potential investors or lenders.
  8. Competitive advantage. Accurate sales forecasts help companies quickly and successfully adapt to local, national, or global market changes. It does not matter if it is expected seasonal fluctuations or force majeure. A well-prepared forecast allows you to use any available opportunities for development and stay ahead of competitors.

Thus, sales forecasts are important for any business. They influence planning, financial and resource management, personnel policy, and other aspects of the company’s activities. Correct forecasting largely determines the brand’s success in the market.

What are cloud forecasting tools?

Modern entrepreneurs can use numerous tools to make sales forecasts. Their choice depends on the specifics of the business, the organization of work, and the goals set by the enterprise. Recently, cloud solutions have become increasingly popular among specialists of any level.

Cloud-based sales forecasting tools are software applications or platforms that provide sales forecasting capabilities through a cloud-based infrastructure. These tools are accessed and managed over the Internet. It eliminates the need for local installation in a specific location and gives users the ability to work with data anytime, anywhere.

Cloud-based sales forecasting tools have several advantages over traditional on-premise software solutions:

  • Flexibility and scalability. Users can scale up or down the storage capacity based on their needs. However, they do not face the severe limitations present in physical equipment.
  • Real-time data synchronization. With end-to-end solutions, all employees have constant access to the most up-to-date information. This condition plays an important role in ensuring productive work that does not require additional monitoring and correction.
  • Seamless integration with other cloud applications. In particular, we are talking about widespread and user-friendly customer relationship management (CRM) systems, marketing automation platforms, or ERP systems. The integration ensures a stable and streamlined data flow, automates the data synchronization process, and guarantees a comprehensive understanding of the sales and marketing process.
  • Advanced security measures. Cloud applications use security protocols, encryption, and regular data backups to protect client privacy. Thus, you may not worry: sales information and other indicators of the company’s activities will not fall into the hands of strangers.
  • Improved accessibility. Users can work with cloud tools on different devices, including computers, laptops, tablets, and smartphones. It simplifies the team’s work and allows you to stay in touch regardless of external circumstances.

Popular Cloud Forecasting Tools

Types of sales forecasting software can be categorized into two main functionalities:

  • Sales pipeline-based: These tools focus on managing current deals and identifying future opportunities likely to close. They use predictive analytics to optimize sales, prioritize actions, and forecast demand and market trends. Sales teams can identify patterns in deal behavior, enabling them to tailor their sales strategies effectively.
  • Historical sales-based: This software type analyzes past performance to inform future decisions. By using algorithms to identify correlations and trends in data, it forecasts sales performance. It is useful for budgeting, forecasting quarterly and annual performance, and understanding historical trends.

When considering sales forecasting software, some key features to look for include:

  • Dynamic vs. static forecasts. Dynamic forecasts that update sales reports in real time can provide an advantage, allowing teams to optimize strategies for long-term success.
  • Importing capabilities. The possibility to integrate data from multiple sources is crucial. This feature ensures an accurate understanding of market trends and better sales decision-making.
  • Real-time alerts. Automated real-time alerts enable quick responses to market changes, keeping sales teams competitive and adaptable.

Aviso is one of the most popular cloud solutions among entrepreneurs. It’s an AI-powered app designed to predict revenue for sales teams. Its work is based on real-time analytics, which allows each employee to quickly receive up-to-date profile information and use it to achieve their goals.

The Revenue Grid is also a convenient tool for forecasting sales and developing a trading strategy. The platform performs automated data collection, provides convenient storage, and predicts the potential performance of the sales force.

With the help of Revenue Grid, you can not only make forecasts but also prevent risks, receive timely interactive notifications of changes, and increase the sales team’s productivity.

It empowers businesses with the insights needed to navigate the market successfully and drive sustainable growth.

Personal Guarantees Burden 50% of Small Business Owners, Reveals New Study

  • A considerable 49% of small business owners either presently serve as personal guarantors for business loans or intend to undertake such responsibilities before the year’s end.
  • In 2023, an impressive 50% of small business owners have already secured or are in the process of securing fresh financial support to drive their enterprises forward.
  • Among this cohort, 42% specifically require the funds to settle pre-existing debts that are weighing on their businesses.
  • Small businesses can effectively leverage personal guarantees if they proactively mitigate associated risks through careful planning and execution.

Underlining the high stakes involved in being a small business owner in 2023, a new survey has uncovered that over a third (34%) have put their home and life savings on the line for their business by signing a Personal Guarantee for a business loan. If their business fails, they risk losing everything.  Furthermore, 15% of those surveyed anticipate becoming a personal guarantor for a business loan within the year. The findings of the survey by Purbeck Personal Guarantee Insurance (conducted amongst 400 owners and managers of small businesses across the UK, 28th April 2023), demonstrates how difficult it has become for small business owners to access funding without taking the serious step of signing a personal guarantee.

Worryingly, the survey also found that while half of small businesses plan to secure new finance this year, 53% of these small business owners are borrowing to ease cash flow and 42% need the money to pay off existing outstanding debt.

Raising finance in a struggling economy is not easy and while the survey found that 43% will seek finance from a traditional lender in the form of a business loan, 28% plan to use their credit cards and 28% plan to use overdrafts to help fund their business.  In addition, 1 in 5 (21%) will ask friends or family for cash.

Todd Davison, MD of Purbeck Personal Guarantee Insurance said: ”In today’s turbulent economy, it will come as no surprise that small business owners are seeking additional finance but it has become increasingly difficult, since the Pandemic, for a small business to find funding without a personal guarantee requirement. It is vital that business owners fully understand the risks of signing a personal guarantee and importantly how to mitigate them.  This can range from sharing the risk to using personal guarantee insurance to help settle the debt, should the business fail.  So far in 2023, we have seen more SME owners apply for personal guarantee insurance (PGI) to mitigate the risk of business failure, than at any time previously.”

Personal guarantee insurance (PGI) is an insurance product used by small business owners to protect against the risk of a personal guarantee being called in for a business loan, if the business becomes insolvent.

Five ways a personal guarantee can work for a business:

  1. Before signing a personal guarantee on a loan, independent advice should be obtained from an accountant, solicitor or personal broker who can advise on ways personal risk might be cut.
  2. It is beneficial to establish if the personal guarantee can be shared amongst co-directors so the risk is not shouldered by one person.
  3. Ask the lender if a time limit can be agreed for the guarantee or a cap on the amount, but remember, if interest rates rise, costs added to the debt can mount up.
  4. See if there is the option to guarantee part of the loan meaning that settlement of the debt is sought first from the company’s assets, before enforcing the guarantee.
  5. Consider personal guarantee insurance to mitigate the risk which means that, in the event of a business failure, 80% of the loan will be settled by the insurance rather than the business owner’s personal assets.

New figures show more than a third of children in North West living in poverty

  • Across the North West region more than a third (34.3%) of children are living in poverty
  • Among the region’s local authority areas, the highest levels are in Manchester where 44.7% of children are living in poverty, closely followed by Oldham (43.6%) and Pendle (42.5%)
  • Poverty is a problem is the region’s other big cities, standing as 38.9% in Liverpool and 36.7% in Preston
  • Rising proportion of children experiencing poverty (seven in ten) live in working households

Today the End Child Poverty Coalition launches its annual child poverty statistics for the UK, revealing child poverty levels at a local authority and Westminster constituency level.

Government data has shown that more than a third (34.3 per cent) of children and young people in the North West region are living in poverty, the equivalent of ten children in a classroom of 30. The new research, carried out by Loughborough University on behalf of the coalition, reveals that in Manchester this figure reaches a third (44.7%) of all children and young people – or a staggering 13 children in a classroom of 30.

Across the region the number of children living in poverty has seen a worrying increase, rising 5.4 percentage points since 2014/15. During this time, child poverty only rose by one percentage point across the UK.

Eight of the region’s local authorities also now feature in the list of the twenty council areas with the highest child poverty rates in the whole of the UK – with Manchester having the third highest child poverty rate in the country.

Commenting on the figures, Graham Whitham, End Child Poverty Coalition spokesperson and CEO of Greater Manchester Poverty Action said: “These new figures are shocking but not surprising. Child poverty rates have been rising in the North West for a number of years, and government failure to adequately support people means there is no safety net when something like the pandemic or cost-of-living crisis hit.

“Crisis responses and temporary sticking plasters are very clearly not working, and the UK government has no plan or strategy to address poverty. We need to see real policy change that protects and supports our poorest households, such as ending the two-child limit on benefits.

“While many of the main drivers to tackle poverty lie with central government, there are ways we can reduce poverty locally. We urge employers across the North West to pay the Real Living Wage, which reflects the real cost of living in a way that the statutory minimum set by government doesn’t. We also encourage local authorities to develop anti-poverty strategies which implement robust responses to poverty, and to use the Household Support Fund to give families money rather than in-kind support such as food parcels and energy vouchers.”

Nationally, the cost-of-living crisis has driven up the number of children experiencing poverty to 4.2 million last year (29 per cent of all dependent children aged 0-19), with an increasing number living in working households.

Some 71 per cent of them live in households where at least one adult works.

Liv Eren, age 19, from Halton, in Cheshire, grew up in a family on a low income and is an End Child Poverty Coalition ambassador. She said: “I am one of many young people who despite living in a working household, has still grown up in poverty. I am still haunted by the experience of growing up ‘without’ for lots of things that others would describe as necessities: proper school uniform, a decent packed lunch or even the having heating on in the house. It is harrowing knowing that there are so many who are deeply struggling.

“We are not just statistics, we are individual people who deserve and need support.”

From Good To Great: Strategies For Elevating Your Customer Experience

0

Providing a good customer experience is just the beginning. If you want to stand out, you need to be remarkable, memorable, and exceed customer expectations consistently. “Good” has become the new “average,” and to truly differentiate your brand, you need to aim for “great.” How do you transform your customer experience from good to great?

This article will guide you through seven powerful strategies to elevate your customer experience and ensure your brand remains top-of-mind for customers.

Create A Customer-Centric Culture

The journey from good to great begins with a deep-seated commitment to prioritizing the customer experience. It involves more than merely implementing some customer-centric tactics or procedures; it’s about instilling a customer-focused culture that permeates every level of your organization.

The top management should not only endorse this ethos but embody it, reinforcing its importance by rewarding behaviors that enhance customer satisfaction and loyalty. When employees at all levels understand and value the importance of delivering excellent customer experiences, you’ll see a significant positive impact on customer satisfaction and retention rates.

Embrace Technology, But Don’t Lose The Human Touch

Today’s customers expect seamless, personalized experiences, and technology plays a crucial role in enabling businesses to meet these expectations. From using AI-powered chatbots to handle routine customer queries to leveraging predictive analytics for personalized offers, technology can help businesses offer superior customer experiences.

However, while embracing digital transformation, it’s essential not to lose the human touch. Remember, customers value genuine, personal interactions and appreciate empathy in their brand interactions. So, balance technology with a humanistic approach to deliver an exceptional customer experience.

Consistently Deliver On Promises

Consistency is key to moving from good to great in customer service. Make sure your brand consistently delivers on its promises, be it product quality, delivery times, or customer service standards.

It’s better to under-promise and over-deliver than to make promises that you can’t keep. This will help build trust and credibility, two critical pillars of a great customer experience.

Solicit, Listen, And Act On Customer Feedback

Collecting customer feedback isn’t just about sending out surveys; it’s about genuinely listening to your customers, understanding their needs and frustrations, and acting upon their suggestions.

By making it clear that you value their input and are willing to take action based on their feedback, you show customers that they are a valued part of your brand’s journey, thus strengthening their loyalty.

Train And Empower Your Employees

Empowered employees are more likely to go the extra mile to ensure customer satisfaction. Invest in your employees’ training, giving them the tools, knowledge, and autonomy to solve customer issues effectively and make on-the-spot decisions.

When employees feel trusted and valued, they are more likely to deliver exceptional customer service, transforming a good customer experience into a great one.

Create Personalized Experiences

Today’s customers demand personalization as part of their interactions with brands. Use data and analytics to understand your customers’ preferences, behaviors, and needs. Then, use this information to deliver personalized messages, offers, and experiences.

This will not only make your customers feel valued but also lead to higher engagement and conversion rates.

Continuously Innovate

Finally, in the quest to elevate your customer experience from good to great, remember that customer expectations are constantly evolving.

Therefore, it’s essential to stay on your toes and continuously innovate. Keep an eye on industry trends, leverage new technologies, and consistently refine your customer service strategies to meet and exceed these ever-changing customer expectations.

In Conclusion

Elevating your customer experience from good to great is not an overnight process; it requires a sustained commitment and strategic effort.

However, by creating a customer-centric culture, embracing technology without losing the human touch, consistently delivering on promises, actively seeking and acting on customer feedback, empowering your employees, personalizing the customer journey, and continuously innovating, you can successfully transition from delivering a good customer experience to offering a truly great one.
