Phillips ponders Manchester City future

Kalvin Phillips knows he has a “decision to make” after being told by England boss Gareth Southgate that he has to be playing games ahead of Euro 2024.

Phillips joined Manchester City from Leeds in July 2022 but has failed to hold down a regular first-team place at the Etihad. He made 21 appearances across all competitions as City won a domestic and continental treble last season, but started just two Premier League games.

He has fared little better this term, making just three substitute appearances in the league.

And with a place in Germany next summer at stake, Phillips is considering his future.

He told the BBC: “I know that I need to be playing games and competing every weekend.

“I’m going to have to make a decision [on my future] over the next few months.

“He [Southgate] just says that for me to keep my spot I have to be playing games.

“That’s what I want to do. I have agreed with Gareth on that.”

Phillips played for 69 minutes in last night’s 3-1 win over Italy that confirmed England’s place in the finals but is set for more bench duty when City take on Brighton this weekend, especially with defensive midfield rival Rodri back from suspension.

“I want to play football and want to play as much as possible,” Phillips added.

“Over the last year and a half I haven’t been able to do that due to injuries. It’s something I am going to have to think about.
