Ley Rubber: Restoring the Iconic 1989 Batmobile for the Streets of Qatar

The iconic 1989 Batmobile, made famous by Tim Burton’s Batman film series, has found new life on the streets of Qatar, thanks to the expertise of Knowsley based rubber component manufacturer Ley Rubber.

Comparable in status to the DeLorean from the Back to the Future franchise, the 1989 Batmobile is an emblematic movie vehicle that has captured the imagination of a generation. Originally created for the 1989 Batman film starring Michael Keaton, the car’s design perfectly embodies the dark and brooding essence of the caped superhero.

Acquired at auction by a Qatari Prince for nearly £1 million, the Batmobile was transported back to the UK for a critical restoration project, as its new owner wished to drive it on the streets of Qatar.

Ley Rubber was presented with the unique challenge of crafting a weatherproof seal for the Batmobile that could withstand the elements while also minimising vibrations from body panels. Notably, the car’s entry is a sliding roof panel that grants access to the cockpit, and it features two pop-up panels housing missiles that required waterproofing.

With their wealth of experience in designing and manufacturing bespoke rubber components, as well as their established expertise in transportation and the classic car industries, Ley Rubber was the ideal choice to tackle the intricate demands of this extraordinary vehicle.

After meticulous assessment, Ley Rubber’s Commercial Manager designed a tailored sponge rubber solution to seal the roof effectively, safeguarding it from weather-related damage. This innovative solution not only prevented water from infiltrating the missile compartments but also resolved the bothersome vibration noise originating from the bonnet.

Jon Holbrook, Head of Commercials at Ley Rubber, explained the process: “This was a very special project and needed a unique design. We created a large sponge bubble profile on one side of the roof then a half dome solid sponge 16mm base which when closed sealed the roof completely. As well as this and on the top of the door where the roof slides back, we used a SRS135 rubber component to ensure the vehicle was weatherproof. To prevent the vibration issue on the bonnet we used a small U channel profile IRS0840, which worked like a charm.”

Known for their capability in handling intricate bespoke projects, Ley Rubber’s mission was to resurrect the iconic Batmobile for the streets of Qatar, ensuring that the caped crusader could continue to patrol a different kind of city. The collaboration with Ley Rubber showcases how their expertise and innovation have played a pivotal role in bringing the legendary Batmobile back to life for a new generation to enjoy.
