Cricket World Cup: England’s Reece Topley out with broken finger as Brydon Carse called up

England’s leading wicket-taker at the 2023 World Cup, Reece Topley, has been ruled out of the remainder of the tournament with “brilliant all-round package” Brydon Carse called up as his replacement.

Topley has taken eight wickets in three matches in India, but after having to leave the field with an injury to his finger in the match against South Africa, scans later showed he had broken his index finger. He had returned to the field and completed the match.

England had placed Carse among several bowlers on standby in the event of an injury. He is due to fly to India on Tuesday as batter Joe Root assures England fans they are in capable bowling hands.

He said: “Brydon is a brilliant all-round package.

“He scores some handy runs, is dynamic in the field, and he’s got a unique wicket-taking ability.

“He’s got that Stokes element to him.

“He’s a big personality and a great character to have around, so he’s a good addition.”

While all signs point to positive things with Carse coming into the side, there is a doubt that he will be ready for England’s next game against Sri Lanka on Thursday.

After being dropped for his poor form, captain Joss Buttler may have to call upon first-choice new-ball bowler Chris Woakes once again.

The current holders, England, must now aim for nothing less than a victory in their five remaining games if they want a chance to qualify for the semi-finals.
