Youth Hostel Association Puts 20 Hostels up for Sale, Leaving Community in Shock

The Youth Hostel Association (YHA) has unexpectedly put 20 youth hostels on the market, much to the surprise of the hostelling community. This news has caused concern among those who have fond memories of their first taste of independence and love for the countryside while staying at YHA hostels with friends, clubs, or schools.

For some, the sales represent opportunities for property renovation. However, others view this as a chance to purchase and operate a hostel, seeking an escape from the rat race.

Never before have so many hostels been listed for sale simultaneously. Alongside the 20 YHA hostels, 13 independent hostels are also on the market. Situated in some of the most picturesque locations in England and Wales, these properties offer individuals, couples, and families the prospect of a complete lifestyle change. They present an opportunity to break free from the monotony of a nine-to-five job, bid farewell to tedious commutes, and escape the stresses of urban life.

Running a hostel business is not suitable for everyone. A hostel owner must be a people person who enjoys challenges. Each day in the life of a hostel owner is unique, with opportunities to meet new and inspiring individuals.

Being a hostel owner brings many rewards, including being one’s own boss, infusing one’s personality, enthusiasm, and passion into the business, and witnessing its success.

Many of the properties for sale include managers’ quarters, while others provide the potential to create a wonderful rural home. It is a fantastic chance to work from a historic building in an idyllic corner of the country.

Prospective hostel owners can find ample support in the industry. The YHA operates a franchise scheme that welcomes former YHA hostels, and the Independent Hostel network, currently supporting over 320 hostel and bunkhouse businesses, is always ready to provide guidance to owners and welcomes new members.

Sam Dalley, director of Independent Hostels, is committed to ensuring that all the hostels currently on the market continue to operate successfully. She emphasises the vital role hostels play in the outdoor industry, offering flexible, self-catering accommodation for all ages. Hostel accommodation, with its shared facilities, is considered one of the most sustainable forms of tourism available.

May hostels continue to offer hospitality, camaraderie, and affordable self-catering accommodation to individuals, couples, families, groups of friends, schools, and clubs for years to come.
