2023 indy 500 preview and possibilities

Alongside ‘The Monaco Grand Prix” and the “24 Hours of Le Mans,” the Indy 500 is part of the ‘Triple Crown’ of world motorsport. It brings together the top drivers worldwide with a history in Formula 1, Formula 2, supercars, sports cars, and more.

More than 300,000 people will make their way to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway to witness one of the most significant racing events, where top drivers from all over the world will race at a speed of more than 350 km/h for three hours straight, with the winner to receive roughly $4.5 million.

After the qualifying races, starting grid for the 107th Indy 500 has been finalized. Thirty-three drivers in 11-row field will compete in 2023 Indy 500 to lift the Borg-Warner Trophy, including nine former winners, Helio Castroneves (2001, 2002, 2009, 2021), Scott Dixon (2008), Tony Kanaan (2013), Ryan Hunter-Reay (2014), Alexander Rossi (2016), Takuma Sato (2017, 2020), Will Power (2018), Simon Pagenaud (2019), Marcus Ericsson (2022) and four rookies.

The infamous Indy 500 race is 200 laps around the 2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway for 500 miles. Unlike Formula 1, it has few turns and rounds, with four corners at 9 degrees, making the speedway look more like a road course than an oval.

Marcus Ericsson won the race last year, leaving behind Pato O’Ward and 2013 winner Tony Kanaan. With that win, he became the only second driver from Sweden (after Kenny Brack) to win the historic race.

It is worth mentioning that Wilson will not be able to participate after he wrecked with Legge in a practice session. He was transported to the hospital, where he was diagnosed with the 12th thoracic vertebrae fracture.

After Wilson got injured, Rahal, who couldn’t make the race on the qualifying speed, replaced him and now will be competing in his 16th career Indy 500.

Alex Palou averaged 234.17mph over four qualifying laps and is the favourite to win this year’s anticipated race. However, it won’t be easy for him, as VeeKay is just behind him, averaging just 0.006mph slower.

Among others, 2021 winner Helio Castroneves is another driver to look forward to as the four-time winner would be looking to become the first driver to win the race five times.

Takuma Sato and Scott Dixon continued their brilliant pace on Friday’s ‘Carb Day’ final practices and are firm favorites to lift the trophy this year. Santino Ferrucci is coming to the race with consistently finishing in the top 10 with AJ Foyt in all four Indy 500 starts and would be looking to make this year count.

2023 indy 500 national Anthem performer:

Four-time Grammy Award nominee, Singer/songwriter Jewel will perform the national anthem at 12:24 pm ET, 21 minutes before the race starts.

2023 indy 500 honorary starter:

Two-time Academy Award Nominee, four-time Emmy Award nominee and 2019 Tony Award nominee, yes, you guessed right, Actor Adam Driver will waive the green flag this year.
